Rex Grossman hopes to continue playing for the Bears despite the fact that he will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. “I want to be a Bear and I want to be wanted,” Grossman told the Chicago Tribune on Tuesday. “I want to be brought back to compete and given a chance to finish what I started.”

The left knee injury that forced Rex Grossman out of Thursday's game is likely to keep the quarterback from playing again this year. However, Grossman has just a sprained medial collateral ligament that should be fully recovered in a month and will not require surgery, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Brian Griese will be under center for the Bears for the final three games.

Although head coach Lovie Smith did not officially name a starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Broncos, all signs point to Rex Grossman getting the nod. “Rex played very well,” Smith told Tuesday’s Chicago Tribune. “I would rather not go into who’s starting and all that right now. You saw the game. (Rex) did a hell of a job.”

Bears head coach Lovie Smith declined to name a starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Seahawks. “First off, (Griese) needs to be medically cleared,” Smith told the Chicago Sun-Times. “If he’s cleared medically, we’ll go from there. It’s unclear who is going to start.” Rex Grossman would start if Griese is unable to play.

The Bears have named Brian Griese their new starter, meaning Rex Grossman will be relegated to clipboard duty for the coming weeks. The move wasn't much of a surprise, considering Grossman tossed just one TD pass and six interceptions in the first three games.

Lovie Smith declined to say on Monday whether Rex Grossman will start at quarterback on Sunday against the Lions. “Our evaluation process is going on right now,” Smith told the Chicago Tribune. “And if you come out to practice on Wednesday, you’ll have a better idea of who will be starting at all positions.”

Rex Grossman struggled against the Colts Monday night. He fumbled three times, twice on snaps, threw an interception deep in Chicago territory and was sacked once. Grossman finished 9-of-11 for 59 yards and with a sub-par passer rating of 51.1.

Rex Grossman was simply miserable in the Super Bowl. Although he completed 20-of-28 passes and had a touchdown, he was picked off twice and fumbled twice, losing one. The Bears stuck with Grossman all season, and he predictably burned them. It will be interesting to see if Grossman is handed the starting job in 2007.

Rex Grossman admits he wasn't best prepared for the Week 17 finale with the Packers, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Grossman had a nightmarish game, completing just 2-of-12 passes against three interceptions (two returned for touchdowns). "In this league, especially at this position, you have to bring it every single week, no matter what," Grossman said this week. "And the situation was I felt like I was going to play about a half, and it was the last game, it was New Year's Eve -- there were so many other factors that brought my focus away from what is actually important, and that's something that I am never going to do again."
