Musa Smith has been released by the Jets, according to the Star-Ledger.

Our View:Smith could not beat out Jesse Chatman for the No. 3 role at running back behind starter Thomas Jones and primary backup Leon Washington.

Running back Musa Smith, who has been hampered by injuries during his five-year tenure with Baltimore, looked sharp during the New York Jets' recent mini-camp and could earn a spot on the roster if he contributes on special teams, according to the Sporting News.

Our View:Smith is mired on the depth chart behind Thomas Jones, Leon Washington and Jesse Chatman. His best chance to make the roster will be to contribute on special teams, and given his size, could be given a shot at backing up Tony Richardson at fullback.
May 28, 2008
When asked about the acquisition of running back Musa Smith, head coach Eric Mangini immediately mentioned his special teams prowess, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:Thomas Jones is the primary back with Leon Washington the favorite to reprise his third down, change-of-pace role. Jesse Chatman and Musa Smith will likely battle for scraps in the running game.

The Jets added some backfield depth Tuesday, signing former Baltimore Raven Musa Smith, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:With Thomas Jones, Leon Washington and Jesse Chatman already on the roster, we're not sure why the Jets felt the need to bring Smith aboard. He has been the third-down back for the Ravens the last couple years, but Washington has a firm grasp on those duties in New York.
May 22, 2008
The Jets have hosted Musa Smith on Wednesday, according to ESPN Insider.

Our View:Smith can play halfback or fullback, and the Jets are looking to strengthen the position. The team reportedly wants to run the ball a lot this season, but Smith wouldn't likely see a significant amount of action behind Thomas Jones, Leon Washington, and Jesse Chatman.
