The CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers hold the rights to Onterrio Smith and are considering signing him, according to the Star-Tribune. Smith was released from the Vikings last month, and he won't be eligible to play in the NFL until he is reinstated from a drug-related suspension in October.

The Vikings released Onterrio Smith Wednesday, according to the AP. "We've decided to terminate Onterrio Smith's contract ahead of this weekend's college draft. We wish him well in his future endeavors," coach Brad Childress said in a statement. Smith is currently serving a suspension for violating the league's drug policy.

The NFL has informed Onterrio Smith that he will not be reinstated in June, a year following his suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy, according to the Pioneer Press. "That falls under the confidentiality provisions of the program," league spokesman Greg Aiello said. "His status is unchanged in that he continues to be under suspension." On the upside, it gives us another chance to mention Smith's infamous "Whizzinator."

Smith will forfeit his entire base salary, $380,000, for the 2005 season. The Vikings could also seek to recover a portion of his signing bonus.

The Star-Tribune reports that Onterrio Smith has been suspended by the NFL for the 2005 season after violating the league's substance abuse policy for the third time. Citing two league sources, the paper also reports that the suspension is not related to Smith's recent "Whizzinator" incident, when he was caught at an airport with a device designed to circumvent drug tests.
