Cornerback Drayton Florence has been removed from the starting lineup, according to the Jaguars' website.

Our View:Florence has been a huge disappointment for the Jaguars and they cannot afford his weak coverage any further. Brian Williams moves from safety to corner.

As promised when signed to a rather large new contract in Jacksonville as a free agent, Drayton Florence found himself starting at right cornerback as Brian Williams has been moved to safety, according to the Florida Times-Union.

Our View:The move speaks volumes, for Williams is making $4 million this season and Florence was signed to a six-year, $36 million contract. You can't have either on the bench for that kind of money, and it appears this is the fix to that worry. We'll see how it plays out moving towards training camp.

Drayton Florence was surprised to receive a call from the Jacksonville Jaguars when the free-agency signing period opened last month because he didn’t think they were in the market for a cornerback, according to UltimateJaguars.com. The Jaguars gave Florence a six-year, $36 million deal that included a $3 million signing bonus, a $5 million roster bonus this year and a $2.5 million roster bonus in 2009. That’s starter money, and defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has “indicated” to Florence that he'll start at corner alongside Rashean Mathis, with Brian Williams moving to strong safety.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have discussed making significant changes to their defensive backfield, according to the Sporting News. Step one was hiring Donnie Henderson to coach the defensive backs, who struggled making tackles towards the end of last season. Henderson brings a drill-sergeant approach focusing on fundamentals. With the addition of free-agent cornerback Drayton Florence, the Jags have discussed moving starting right corner Brian Williams to strong safety. The Jags are also exploring the possibility of moving second-year free safety Reggie Nelson to corner. If Williams switches to strong safety it would allow Gerald Sensabaugh to move back to his more natural free safety position. That would leave an opening at right corner, where Florence and Nelson would likely battle for the starting role, with the loser assuming the nickel spot. Del Rio and the coaching staff are still in preliminary discussions about such moves, so there's a chance that nothing could change, but it’s clear that the secondary will have a different, more agressive attitude in 2008.
