Osi Umenyiora says he is ahead of schedule in his rehab from a torn MCL, and that it is possible he could have returned to the team before the end of the year, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:The Giants seem to be doing just fine without him, and he should return to the team at full strength next season. Mathias Kiwanuka moved from linebacker to defensive end and has 5.0 sacks on the season.

The New York Giants' Osi Umenyiora needs season-ending knee surgery, NFL Network's Adam Schefter is reporting. The Pro Bowl defensive end has a torn MCL, according to NFL.com.

Our View:With Umenyiora sidelined, the Giants could move strongside linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end. He was switched to linebacker last year so the team could put its best 11 players on the field.

Updating a top story from yesterday, Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora suffered a concerning knee injury yesterday and has been scheduled to undergo an MRI today, according to the NFL Network.

Our View:Per Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Umenyiora will undergo an MRI on Sunday. Schefter reports the knee "locked up" and it is believed that he has not suffered any damage to ACL as a result. We will be passing along the news of his MRI results as soon as they become available.

Osi Umenyiora was carted off the field in the second quarter Saturday with a left knee injury, according to the AP. He was getting an X-ray and the extent of the injury was not immediately known.

Our View:We'll update Usi's status when more is known. Obviously it would be a huge blow to the Giants' D should he have to miss significant time.

Osi Umenyiora would love to see his six-year, $41 million contract extension redone. However, the defensive end says he is not going to create any controversy this summer, according to the New York Daily News. Umenyiora is going to practice while talking to the New York Giants brass about a new deal. "I will be in camp," Umenyiora said. "I'm not going to hold out. My situation is a little different."

Our View:Umenyiora will be expected to prove his worth this season now that Michael Strahan has retired. Umenyiora will likely face the constant double-teams Strahan often received. Regardless, we expect him to be a top 5 player at his position in IDP leagues this year.
