The San Diego Chargers could be without another offensive starter early next season, as center Nick Hardwick underwent surgery last week to repair a severe sprain in his right foot, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "I think I'll be ready to go by the season," Hardwick said yesterday. "If not, I'll definitely be there when it starts getting interesting." A Pro Bowler in 2006, Hardwick initially injured the foot on Oct. 14 of last year against the Oakland Raiders and missed the next four games. The Chargers went 2-2 without Hardwick last season, as Cory Withrow filled in. The Chargers offense potentially could also be missing starting tight end Antonio Gates (toe), quarterback Philip Rivers (knee) and fullback Andrew Pinnock (knee) for some or all of the preseason.

Philip Rivers, who underwent offseason surgery to replace hi right Anterior Cruciate Ligament, is progressing in his rehab, according to the team's official website. Rivers is expected to be ready for the beginning of training camp in late July. What he does between now and then will depend on his rehab progress. Rivers was radically inconsistent this past season, but has a plethora of weapons (RB LaDainian Tomlinson, TE Antonio Gates, WR Chris Chambers, WR Vincent Jackson and young WR Craig Davis) at his disposal and should be considered a "Keeper League" candidate despite his 2007 numbers.

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers had surgery to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament on Wednesday. Rivers' rehab on his right knee is expected to take about six months, which means he should be ready to participate in training camp next summer. We all knew the surgery was coming, and it's nice to know that it's already done. Barring a major setback, Rivers should be ready to go as the Chargers starter for Week 1.
