Ben Watson is recovering from ankle surgery and will begin training camp on the PUP list, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:Since it is training camp, he can be activated from the PUP list at any time. He is their top tight end and the club will be cautious with him, meaning Dave Thomas will have a chance to shine and prove his worth through the preseason.

Ben Watson is being held out of the Patriots' mini-camp this weekend, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:He is recovering from ankle surgery performed in the off-season. There remains concern as to whether he will be ready for the beginning of training camp in July. Dave Thomas is listed as the primary backup on the depth chart.

Ben Watson underwent surgery on his left ankle within the past few weeks, which revealed both cartilage damage and scar tissue, according to the Boston Herald. Watson injured the ankle during the second quarter of the Pats’ 48-27 Week 6 win at Dallas on Oct. 14, when he caught a pass and was dragged down from behind by Dallas safety Roy Williams. Last year, Watson caught 36 passes for 369 yards and a career-high six touchdowns, but his inability to do much after the catch raised some eyebrows, particularly later in the season. There is now some concern whether Watson will be ready for training camp in July. Next in line on the depth chart is Dave Thomas, who would likely step in if Watson misses an extended amount of time.

Ben Watson (ankle) was able to play Saturday at New York and had four receptions for 38 yards. He also dropped a couple of catchable passes.

December 22, 2007
Ben Watson took part in a limited practice again on Friday. He's listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Dolphins due to the sprained ankle that sidelined him last week. Watson may end up a game-time call.
