Sage Rosenfels is ready to assume the backup position again in Houston, but he will continue holding on to his dream of one-day being a starter, according to the Houston Chronicle. "I'd like to have a chance to be a starting quarterback in the NFL," Rosenfels said. "That's the lifelong dream I have. I'm 30. Who knows how much longer you're going to have? Hopefully, I have seven or eight more years, but that is the frustrating part of it." Rosenfels appeared in nine games for the injured Matt Schaub last season, and won four of his five starts. While some fans would like the team to open up the starting job at quarterback, the Texans are not heading in that direction. General manager Rick Smith said during the NFL scouting combine, that Schaub is the Texans starting quarterback and the team feels fortunate to have such a strong backup in Rosenfels. Bottom line… the team is paying Schaub too much money to sit on the bench, but he will be under immense pressure in 2008 to step up his game and stay healthy.

Houston head coach Gary Kubiak made it clear this morning that quarterback Matt Schaub's health makes it difficult to trade Sage Rosenfels, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "He's important to our football team," Kubiak said. "Our starter right now physically has a problem, coming off shoulder surgery, so Sage is very important to our football team." Some of Kubiak's comments could be posturing. But they also make sense. Why would the Texans, who have playoff aspirations in 2008, trade a relatively young but proven backup quarterback when their starter's health is in question?

Matt Schaub, recovering from surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, will throw passes to receivers during the Texans' offseason program, according to the Houston Chroncle. "I'm close to having my full range of motion back. I just need to keep getting my muscles stronger," said Schaub. "We're moving right along." Even though Sage Rosenfels won four of his five starts while filling in for Schaub last season, coach Gary Kubiak has made it clear that Schaub is his starter.
