Linebacker Derrick Pope was released by the Minnesota Vikings on Monday, according to The Sports Network.

Our View:Pope had a solid year for Miami in 2007, posting 64 tackles and two interceptions on the season, and he was expected to contribute at least on special teams in Minnesota, but he'll be looking for a new home now.

The Vikings have signed Derrick Pope to a free-agent deal, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. He'll replace Dontarrious Thomas, who left for San Francisco, as a backup linebacker and chip in on special teams.

Derrick Pope is visiting the Minnesota Vikings over the next two days, according to scout.com. Current Vikings vice president of player personnel Rick Speilman drafted Pope in the seventh round of the 2004 NFL Draft, when he was a member of the Miami front office. Pope started nine games at inside linebacker last season in Miami, compiling 57 tackles (38 solos) and two interceptions. He is also a solid special teams player, who made 27 tackles during his four seasons with the Dolphins.

Derrick Pope was admitted to a hospital Saturday morning for undisclosed reasons. Pope, who was released from Jackson South Community Hospital shortly after noon, said he was "fine" but that he did not yet want to get into specifics about his problem, according to the Miami Herald. His agent said it was not drug related, and coach Cam Cameron said he didn't think it was a football-related injury. The Dolphins list him as questionable for Monday night's game, so we'll have to wait to see if there are more updates on his status as the day goes along.

Derrick Pope practiced without restrictions Friday and appears set to take part in tomorrow's game, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Pope was limited in practice Wednesday and had a red no-contact jersey on for Thursday's session due to a hamstring injury.
