PressDemocrat.com reports Smith's shoulder injury is progressing well, and he won't require surgery to insert a screw. He could have surgery to remove wire sutures that were inserted last December, however.

Our View:Smith is out for the 2008 season and may not return to the 49ers next season due to his high salary.

49ers quarterback Alex Smith has a broken bone in his right shoulder and has been put on injured reserve, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:The team does not know how Smith got the injury, but it is almost certainly the end of his 49ers career. He is due $9 million next season, a hefty sum for someone who can't beat out J.T. O'Sullivan and Shaun Hill for a job.
September 8, 2008
49ers coach Mike Nolan said they have not yet decided whether or not to put quarterback Alex Smith on injured reserve, and would need more information before making that decision, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:If Smith were to go on IR, that would effectively end his career with San Francisco in all likelihood. If Smith is out for the season, the 49ers would be forced to bring in a veteran quarterback.
September 7, 2008
According to the Mercury News, Alex Smith told the paper he wouldn't know the extent of his latest shoulder injury until Monday. When inactives were announced today, Smith was on the list due to injuring his shoulder in Friday's practice. The quarterback did not rule out the possibility that his season was already over. Asked if his season might be over, Smith responded: "We should find out tomorrow."

Our View:Suddenly, the long list of quarterbacks that are out of work enter the high side of "supply and demand," and this includes the recently retired Daunte Culpepper. We will update the future of Smith when the news is available.

Week 1 Inactive: QB Alex Smith, CB Michael Hudson, CB Tarell Brown, CB Reggie Smith, LB Ahmad Brooks, C Cody Wallace, OL Chilo Rachal, LB Tully Banta-Cain.

Our View:No major suprises on this inactive list. Smith has major issues with his shoulder that might require surgery, meaning Shaun Hill will backup J.T. O'Sullvan today.
