October 5, 2008
Quarterback Kyle Orton completed 24-of-34 passes for 334 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 5 win over the Lions.

Our View:Yes, that is two straight three-touchdown (and three straight multi-score) efforts for Orton. We wouldn't take him too seriously if only had one big day against the Lions, but this stretch makes Orton look like reasonable fantasy roster material, Yeah, we're shocked, too.
September 28, 2008
Kyle Orton completed 18-of-34 passes for 199 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions on Sunday.

Our View:It wasn't the prettiest game, but for the second consecutive week Orton made a positive contribution for fantasy owners. He has thrown more than 30 passes in three straight weeks and has five touchdowns and four interceptions over the last two weeks.
September 21, 2008
Kyle Orton completed 22-of-34 passes for 268 yards with two touchdowns against two interceptions in in Week 3 loss to Tampa Bay.

Our View:The two touchdowns were the first of the season for Orton, who should remain on your waiver wire.
September 14, 2008
Kyle Orton had another ho-hum effort for the Bears in Week 2, completing 19-of-32 passes for 149 yards while not throwing a TD or INT.

Our View:Orton usually limits his mistakes, but he is rarely going to help out fantasy owners.
September 7, 2008
Kyle Orton went a pedestrian 13-for-21 for 150 yards with no touchdowns, but the signal-caller didn't make any mistakes in the Bears 29-13 win over the Colts. Unlike his predecessor, Rex Grossman, Orton orchestrated a plan that coach Lovie Smith has been preaching for years. Run the football, protect the football, and stop the run on defense.

Our View:Orton completed passes to seven different receivers, no more than two to any one player. Veteran tight end Desmond Clark led all players in receiving yards with 46.
September 1, 2008
Kyle Orton has been named a offensive team captain by the Bears, according to the Chicago Tribune. Olin Kreutz has been chosen as a captain as well.

Our View:The Bears named him a captain, but surely do not have great faith or confidence in him. As of now, Orton should not be on fantasy rosters in standard leagues.
August 28, 2008
Kyle Orton was fairly ineffective on Thursday night as he went 4-for-7 for 51 yards and an INT in two series on the field, while backup QB Rex Grossman was a bit better going 5-for-7 for 59 yards and a score.

Our View:Neither one of these guys inspires any confidence at all, and therefore should be nothing more than a desperate play in a bye week situation until either proves that he can offer some consistency.
August 21, 2008
Kyle Orton completed 10-of-17 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns against the 49ers Thursday night.

Our View:Orton passed his test with flying colors, making the Bears coaching staff happy with their decision to name Orton the starting Quarterback.
August 18, 2008
Kyle Orton has been named the Bears' starting quarterback for Week 1, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Rex Grossman will serve as the primary backup.

Our View:Orton has the job for now, but is only a few bad performances away from being yanked for Grossman. Orton should only be considered as a deep backup in fantasy drafts.
August 17, 2008
After starting Kyle Orton against the Chiefs and Rex Grossman versus the Seahawks, Bears coach Lovie Smith has yet to announce which quarterback will open Thursday night's preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers at Soldier Field, according to the team's official website. “We’ll evaluate all of that,” Smith said following Saturday night’s 29-26 overtime loss in Seattle. “We had made a decision how we were going to start the first two games and that’s about as far as we’ve gone. We’ll let you know on everything else.”

Our View:The third preseason game tends to resemble a dress rehearsal for games that matter, and as such the start at quarterback carries much weight. The Bears continue to watch other potential options at the position (namely Chris Simms in Tampa Bay), but for now, all signs point to Orton. Grossman has been as inconsistent as ever this preseason while Orton appears calm in the role behind center.
August 10, 2008
Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman each struggled in practice today, reports the Chicago Tribune. According to the paper, Orton threw two interceptions, and Grossman was off-target with throws that were too high.

Our View:This is not shocking news. Neither will put up numbers that will affect fantasy teams - in a positive manner, anyway.
August 7, 2008
Bears quarterback did not play poorly, but he was not great either, connecting on seven of 10 passes for 56 yards. He also fumbled, but did not lose the ball.

Our View:Neither he nor Grossman did much to establish themselves one way or the other, so the epic battle between the two will continue.
August 5, 2008
Kyle Orton will start in the Bears preseason game against the Chiefs on Thursday night, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Rex Grossman will get the starting nod on August 16 against the Seahawks.

Our View:This news may mean that Orton has a slight edge over Grossman, but we can't read too much into it. Fantasy owners should continue to ignore both quarterbacks.
June 15, 2008
Rex Grossman is the starter in name for the Bears and is currently battling Kyle Orton for the first-team role. However, Rototimes sources report that it isn't Grossman that will play his way into the role, it's Orton job to lose. He will have to play his way off the top of the depth chart. A decision likely won't be made until both signal-callers get plenty of preseason reps.

Our View:There will be hoopla surrounding who will start under center for the Bears, but it really doesn't matter in most traditional formats because neither quarterback warrant a roster spot.
May 20, 2008
Kyle Orton took the majority of the reps at quarterback during the Bears' first OTA, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Lovie Smith mentioned that he and Rex Grossman are both on equal ground in competition for the starting job. Grossman could receive most of the work with the first-team on Tuesday.

Our View:Orton could win the job, but would be hard-pressed to make a fantasy impact this season, especially following the departure of big-play threat Bernard Berrian to Minnesota.
May 12, 2008
Kyle Orton is confident he will be the Bears' starting quarterback in 2008, if given a fair shot to compete for the job, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Orton said, "All I care about is if I get my chance. If I get my chance, I'm confident that I will win the job and play well. I don't really pay attention to talk of a not-so level playing field. I hear through third parties and all that stuff but it doesn't affect my mind-set or my thoughts as a player or anything like that. That's what you've got to believe. I've been told by the coaches that's how it's going to be, so I think it is. I think I've earned that chance to have a fair competition. It's the most excited I've been going into a season. I've put in a lot of work in the offseason and I'm just really excited where my game is at. I'm throwing the football really well. I haven't really asked how the competition will break down. I'm assuming it's going to be 50-50 and we'll go from there."

Our View:Orton has struggled as a starter in Chicago in the past, and will be hard-pressed to make an impact as a fantasy quarterback this season, especially following the departure of big-play threat Bernard Berrian to Minnesota.
February 24, 2008
Kyle Orton signed a one-year extension with the Bears, according to the AP. It would keep the quarterback under contract through 2009. Rex Grossman inked a one-year, $3 million deal Saturday, and Orton's deal is expected to be similar in value. Speculation is rampant that if the season started today Orton would likely be the Bears' starter under center. It's unlikely he's do anything to make Bears' fans forget about Grossman, as both signal callers are pretty worthless.
February 24, 2008
The Bears are believed to be trying to extend Kyle Orton's contract through 2011, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The club just locked up Rex Grossman through next season. Look for Orton and Grossman to compete for the starting job in training camp and for Brian Griese to be released.
