The Star-Telegram reports that Jay Ratliff has been working exclusively at defensive end during the first practice Wednesday morning while Marcus Spears worked at nose tackle. "That was something that had been talked about," Ratliff said of switching to defensive end. "But I guess it's a reality now."

Our View:The move gives the Cowboys a bigger body in the middle and possibly a better pass rusher at defensive end. Ratliff has good quickness and energy. He could come up with a healthy number of sacks this season. But he reminds us, "It's going to take some time getting used to it."

Jay Ratliff, who is projected to play in the middle this season, is getting some reps at defensive end in practice, according to the Dallas Morning News. Ratliff said, "Nose is a lot more physical. Everything happens a lot faster in there. If you go from nose to end, you've got so much more space. But I think I've gotten used to working in tight quarters."

Our View:Ratliff filled in at nose tackle when Jason Ferguson went down in 2007, and performed well, but the team is working him in a bit at defensive end, to potentially get Tank Johnson more time in the middle during the season. The team believes Ratliff has the versatility to play all three spots along the defensive line in their 3-4, and time at end could help raise his sack output for 2008.

The Cowboys will turn to Jay Ratliff to replace defensive tackle Jason Ferguson, who is out for the season due to a torn biceps muscle. “[Ratliff] is not as big as ‘Fergie,’ but he’s pretty active and I thought he played pretty well for us [in the opener],” head coach Wade Phillips tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “That’s what we have, so basically that’s who we’re going to play with.”
