Newsbreakers

DeAngelo Williams continued his terrific preseason Saturday, rushing for 101 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

Our View:The Panthers had their RBBC on a roll, as Jonathan Stewart also reached the century mark.

According to the Rock Hill Herald, offensive coodinator Jeff Davidson stated that DeAngelo Williams has become a major player in the Panthers' offense. Davidson also mentioned that he has grown up.

Our View:He has turned his entire game around this off-season, and looks more like a back who can carry the Panthers. He looked great in the Panthers' preseason opener against the Colts, as he racked up 55 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Williams could be headed for a breakout campaign, even with rookie Jon Stewart in the plans to share the workload.

DeAngelo Williams continues to look good in camp working with the first team offense, according to the Gaston Gazette.

Our View:Sure it's early, but this is great news for those of you who own DeAngelo in dynasty leagues. Jonathan Stewart will certainly be involved this season, but it's starting to look like Williams should open the year as the starter after there was some thought that the spot could go to the rookie Stewart.

DeAngelo Williams has improved his blocking out of the backfield and is now someone the team can trust on passing downs, according to the Sporting News.

Our View:The Panthers brought in Jonathan Stewart to challenge for touches out of the backfield, but it's good to hear that Williams can handle blocking duties which could lead to a lot of work on third downs.

DeAngelo Williams doesn't mind sharing the Panthers' workload at running back with rookie Jonathan Stewart, according to the AP. The team released DeShaun Foster, but replaced him with Stewart with the 13th overall pick in the draft. Williams knows he will split time with Stewart like he did with Foster and commented, " It didn’t bother me at all. I still have the same mind-set whether I’m the starter or not the starter. I was thinking everybody is going to the two-back system, so whether he starts the game off or I start the game off, we’ll both get the same amount of carries, give or take a few."

Our View:John Fox is leaning on the formula that led the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2003, when Stephen Davis grinded out yards to chew up the clock as the workhorse, with the explosive Foster spelling him with big-play potential. The Panthers hope the 5-foot-10, 233-pound Stewart will add a smash-mouth style that has been missing in consecutive seasons of missing the playoffs. Williams will be the smaller, shiftier back in the offense. The pair will likely need to be "handcuffed" this season.

DeAngelo Williams has incorporated distance running into his offseason training repertoire so that he can better finish off runs, according to the Charlotte Observer. Williams has been doing a lot of running during the offseason in preparation for the increased workload expected due to the departure of DeShaun Foster. We expect Carolina to burn a first day draft choice on a running back to provide some competition at the position, but its pretty clear at this point that Williams’ will be a key contributor in 2008.
