Vernon Davis has done a fine job blocking opponents this season, though he has only five receptions through five games, according to The Press Democrat. "He's done an outstanding job blocking, both pass and run," HC Mike Nolan said. "The objective is to get the ball in his hand. He has a responsibility to himself to run the correct routes. By no stretch would I say he's a bust."

Our View:Davis may not be a real life bust, but he is the fantasy football version of Britney Spears career, and that our friends is a complete and utter bust. He certainly can't get any worse, but we've also seen nothing to recommend even rostering him at this point.

Vernon Davis had only one catch in Sunday's game. After the catch, he shouted at the 49ers' sideline, angering head coach Mike Nolan, reports the San Jose Mercury News. "He got a little excited, yes he did, and I told him to sit down," said Nolan.

Our View:Davis has been a huge disappointment in the Mike Martz offense, and this action probably won't make matters any better.

Vernon Davis was involved in the 49ers offense on Sunday, something that wasn't always the case last season. The talented tight end caught three passes for 51 yards in the Week 1 loss to the Cardinals.

Our View:Mike Martz has never had such a talented tight end to work with, and he would be wise to continue to utilize the big receiver.

O.C. Mike Martz commented on Vernon Davis, according to the Sacramento Bee. Martz said, "I think that the numbers for Vernon, in terms of receptions, may or may not be there this year. It may fluctuate during the season. But what we expect from Vernon are big plays. He's a very, very substantial blocker, which really allows us to a lot of good things in the running game. There's no question about that. But, when we get him the ball we'd like to get him the ball down the field or get him the ball in the shallow routes and let him take off with it, so to speak."

Our View:Davis may not challenge strong totals in the receptions department, but should reach new highs in yards and touchdowns, and could move into the top-10 among fantasy tight ends, if not higher.

Vernon Davis stated that his role in going to increase "big time" with Mike Martz in control of the offense, according to the SF Chronicle. He believes he can be the top tight end in the NFL and said, "I'm going to be No. 1. That's my goal, nothing less. With this offense, I believe I can do it. I'm saying I'm going to have a great season. An awesome one. Under Martz, my role is going to increase big time. Way more touches. This is a new beginning. This is a breakout season."

Our View:Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson will be the starting receivers this season, but Davis is the most dangerous of the three, and could actually lead the 49ers in receptions and touchdowns in 2008.
