Despite speculation to the contrary, Jets quarterback Kellen Clemens will not be traded, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:Clemens has performed poorly in the preseason, being clearly outplayed by Brett Ratliff. It seems as if he will remain with the Jets, though without any fantasy value, of course.
August 12, 2008
Jets quarterback Kellen Clemens came into training camp with the opportunity to earn the starting job with the team. Then Brett Favre was acquired, and everything changed. It has changed so much, in fact, that Clemens is now fighting Brett Ratliff for the backup job to Favre.

Our View:Talk about a dramatic fall. As things go along, it's still likely Clemens will retain the No. 2 job, but he needs to step it up in preseason games. He has no value in fantasy football.

Updating an earlier report, the Jets have released their first training camp depth chart with Kellen Clemens listed as the top quarterback, and while that might suggest it would be Clemens getting the start in the Jets' first preseason game (tomorrow versus the Browns), reports out of New York indicate coach Eric Mangini has yet to finalize that decision, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:We have to assume Mangini is simply being secretive with the decision. There is no reason why he would not have made the choice between Clemens and veteran Chad Pennington for the role of starter in this first preseason test, but as of this moment, he is not sharing that information with others. We'll keep you posted if/when that changes.

The Jets have released their first depth chart, and Kellen Clemens is listed ahead of veteran Chad Pennington at quarterback, according to the NY Daily News. That means it's likely Clemens will start against the Browns in the preseason opener, but Pennington is slated to work with the starters in today's practice.

Our View:It had been thought that Pennington was holding off Clemens thus far, but it appears, at least at the moment, that the youngster has the edge. Of course, everything will be thrown out the window if the Jets trade for Brett Favre.
August 2, 2008
Kellen Clemens is starting to play much better and has become a serious threat to Chad Pennington in the battle for the starting quarterback job in New York, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Our View:Clemens was a below average QB last season, throwing twice the amount of picks (10) than touchdown passes (5). Neither he nor Pennington should be counted on for fantasy squads.
July 30, 2008
Newsday reports that Kellen Clemens continued to struggle in day six of the Jets training camp. He now has thrown five interceptions to Chad Pennington's zero.

Our View:Not too surprising here as Clemens threw 10 picks to just five touchdowns over ten games a season ago. Chad Pennington appears to be the starter at this point. He has struggled with deep passes some, as he always has, but his accuracy is the best in camp. Regardless of whether or not he wins the job, Pennington is a risky pick on draft day do his arm. Working in noth quarterbacks' favor is a revamped offensive line that should give him plenty of time to make his reads and hopefully stay off of injured reserve.
July 27, 2008
The NY Daily News reports that Kellen Clemens has been struggling with turnovers in the early going of training camp.

Our View:Clemens is viewed as a "wild gunslinger" while Chad Pennington is a more conservative game-manager. It will be interesting to see which route the Jets decide to take in their selection of a starting quarterback.
July 12, 2008
The NY Post reports that the Jets are hoping Kellen Clemens beats out Chad Pennington for the starting quarterback job. The team is in a youth movement and want to justify their selection of Clemens in the second round three years ago. The team is also said to not be interested in Brett Favre.

Our View:Clemens will be the better choice under center over Pennington, but won't be a solid choice for fantasy owners, especially when you consider the bulk of proven signal callers to choose from.
June 7, 2008
Kellen Clemens enjoyed a strong day of practice on Friday, as he threw a 20-yard dart that split the secondary to find Brad Miller in the end zone on a slant, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:He will present the Jets with a tough decision as to who to choose for the starting quarterback job if he continues to perform well, like he did on Friday. Chad Pennington made some nice throws as well, but appeared to be favoring his right ankle that he sprained at the start of last season.
May 30, 2008
Quarterback Kellen Clemens outplayed veteran Chad Pennington for the second straight day during passing drills at the New York Jets organized team activities, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Our View:Clemens was working with the second team in a practice devoted mostly to situational work including the hurry-up, goal line and red zone offenses. It appears Clemens has the early advantage to start for the Jets in 2008, though the quarterback competition will likely remain fierce through training camp.
May 22, 2008
The Jets may be harboring one of the more intriguing quarterback position battles, but coach Eric Mangini refuses assertions the team is hoping Kellen Clemens gets the job, according to the New York Post.

Our View:Mangini notes Chad Pennington is more than capable of leading the team again in 2008 and, while Clemens is still viewed as the arm of the future, the team is going to let the battle play out on the field during training camp. Of course, fans like to note that Pennington is the aging commodity inherited when Mangini took the reins while Clemens is much younger and was drafted as the potential field general for the Jets, thus it seems all too likely the coach has a desire to see his man take the job. Until training camp, we won't know.
May 15, 2008
Manager Eric Mangini has said that there will be an open competition at quarterback between Kellen Clemens and Chad Pennington, but the team is really pulling for Clemens to win the job, according to the NY Daily News. The team drafted Clemens in the second round of the draft two years ago, and has high expectations for him, and also want to prove their assessment of his talent was right.

Our View:Clemens has five touchdown passes and 10 interceptions over 251 NFL snaps over his two seasons, but has better scrambling ability and a stronger arm than Chad Pennington. The team will ultimately have to weigh Pennington's experience against the third year pro's upside when deciding on their starter.
March 31, 2008
New York Jets’ owner Woody Johnson has given head coach Eric Mangini and general manager Mike Tannenbaum the often dreaded vote of confidence, according to ESPN. When the Jets threw more than $140 million at free agents this offseason, their expectations seemed clear: another four-win season would be intolerable. But Johnson said recently that Mangini and Tannenbaum would "absolutely" keep their jobs for 2009, regardless of how the coming season pans out.
