September 21, 2008
ESPN's Mike Ditka reported this morning that the decision to bench quarterback Tarvaris Jackson came from above head coach Brad Childress.

Our View:Sounds like Vikings owner Zygmunt Wilf is emulating Al Davis, which cannot be construed as a good thing.
September 20, 2008
It seems that demoted quarterback Tarvaris Jackson and new starter Gus Frerotte do not speak to each other, according to the St. Paul Pioneer-Press. "Nobody got to explain nothing to me. Nobody got to say anything to me," Jackson said.

Our View:The relationship between the two is not said to be icy, but it does seem odd that they don't speak at all, simply considering how close in proximity they must be to each other all day.
September 17, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson has been demoted to second string after two straight poor performances to start the season, according to ESPN. Veteran Gus Frerotte will take over the starting gig.

Our View:Coach Brad Childress recently backed Jackson, but he apparently had a quick change of heart.
September 16, 2008
Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson has the second-worst passer rating in the NFL inside the red zone, with a mark of 39.6, according to the St. Paul Pioneer-Press.

Our View:This is reason number 1,214 why Jackson has no business on fantasy squads. The Vikings are considering going to Gus Frerotte if Jackson continues to struggle, though that isn't necessarily an upgrade.
September 15, 2008
Head coach Brad Childress is sticking with quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, but he will continue to evaluate the situation. "I'm always looking at what's giving us the best opportunity to win," Childress tells the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "If it's Tarvaris, it's Tarvaris. If it's Gus Frerotte, it's Gus Frerotte. J.D. Booty, it's J.D. Booty... We're chewing on a bunch of things right now and making sure he's the best guy for us to go forward."

Our View:Vikings fans are seemingly ready to be done with Jackson, although we're not sure Gus Frerotte has any answers. The club is based on a dominant rushing attack and a strong defense. Whether it's Jackson or Frerotte or Booty, we have very low fantasy expectations for this passing attack.
September 15, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson continues to wear a brace on the right knee he injured in the second game of the preseason, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View:He could be compromised by the brace, as he only completed 14-of-24 passes for 130 yards in Sunday's loss to Indianapolis. He also only ran with the ball once for one yard. The Vikings lost to Green Bay and the aforementioned Colts and the schedule does not get any easier in Week 3 as the club hosts Carolina.
September 14, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson will remain the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, despite his less-than-stellar performance in the team's loss to the Colts, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Our View:Jackson is not the most popular man in Minnesota right now, as a fan base that had Super Bowl hopes is now staring at a team that is 0-2 instead. We're not really sure how much better the team would be with Gus Frerotte, Minnesota's backup, in the game instead of Jackson.
September 14, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson was ineffective for the Vikings Sunday, completing 14-of-24 passes for just 130 yards. He didn't throw a TD or an INT but lost a fumble.

Our View:Vikings fans were booing Jackson all day long. The Vikes are off to an 0-2 start, and if it keeps getting worse, we might eventually see Gus Frerotte.
September 8, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson completed only 16-of-35 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown. Jackson also added 65 yards on nine carries. However, he threw a costly interception at the end of the game, ending all chances for a comeback against the Packers.

Our View:Jackson needs to open up the passing game a bit, so Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor can continue running the ball with great success.
September 8, 2008
Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson is warming up on the field in Green Bay wearing a knee brace, according to the St. Paul Pioneer-Press. It was not known if Jackson was going to wear a brace on his sprained knee or not, as it limits his mobility.

Our View:One of Jackson's best assets is his mobility, so the fact he has the brace on and is at less than 100 percent does not bode well for that aspect of his game. This shouldn't affect fantasy owners much, because Jackson should not be in starting lineups.
September 6, 2008
The Pioneer Press reports that Vikings' coach Brad Childress said he's content under the circumstances about the way quarterback Tarvaris Jackson has practiced this week. Jackson is dealing with a sprained right knee that might force him to wear a knee brace Monday night at Green Bay. "With 48 hours to game time, I think he’s in good shape," Childress said. "He’s practiced a bunch here and gotten good looks at our game plan. I’m encouraged."

Our View:It appears he will get the start but we caution owners against starting him. Look for the Vikings to primarily run the football not only on Monday, but for the majority of the season.
September 5, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson continued to wear a knee brace Thursday but he was able to fully practice, according to the Star Tribune. He said he felt good afterward, and added, "I'm not going to overcompensate for it. It's to the point where I'm more and more comfortable and just know that it's OK to where I'm not going out there playing like I'm hurt."

Our View:He vows to play Monday night against the division rival Packers, but Jackson should only be considered for fantasy lineups as a reserve. He would prefer not to wear the knee brace Monday, but a decision is yet to be made.
September 2, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson insists he will be ready to play on Monday night against the rival Packers, according to TwinCities.com. He is dealing with a sprained MCL in his right knee, but said, "It's gotten better every day. I've had a couple of days off, a couple of days to rehab. I feel a lot better. I still got a couple more days to go. Not too far away. I'm playing Monday."

Our View:This is encouraging news for the Vikings' offense, but Jackson should only be considered for fantasy lineups as a reserve for Week 1.
August 28, 2008
Updating an earlier report, Vikings Now is reporting that Tarvaris Jackson was not walking with a limp on Thursday directly contradicting a report on the Star Tribune.

Our View:Talk about conflicting reports. What is known for sure is that he was on the field and took some snaps. No matter whether he was limping or not, he is still expected to start in Week 1.
August 28, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson (knee) was seen moving around the field and doing some throwing on Friday as he continued to walk around with a limp, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View:Jackson had his knee brace adjusted during the workout, and though he looked far from 100%, he is still believed to be on track to be under center in Week 1. He is nothing more than a lower tier QB2 until he proves otherwise.
August 26, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson will not play in Thursday's preseason finale, according to the AP. He is dealing with a sprained MCL.

Our View:Jackson expects to be ready to go by Week 1, but he could be rusty. Of course, he's not very good, anyway.
August 26, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson was able to do some work in 7-on-7 drills during Monday's practice, but it remains unknown if he will play in Thursday's preseason finale against the Cowboys, according to the Star Tribune. He is dealing with a sprained MCL in his right knee. He's wearing a brace on his knee and said he isn't experiencing much soreness. He added, "I don't have my range of motion right now. Once I get that back in the next couple of days, I should be fine."

Our View:He may sit out against Dallas, but is confident he will be ready to go in Week 1. If healthy, Jackson would rank as a No. 3 fantasy quarterback for standard leagues.
August 23, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson warmed up his arm before Saturday's game but didn't play due to a sprained right knee, according to the AP.

Our View:Jackson should be fine health-wise for the opener, but he needs all the time he can get on the field.
August 21, 2008
The team is yet to decide if Tarvaris Jackson will play in the Vikings' next preseason game Saturday against Pittsburgh, according to the Star Tribune. Jackson is nursing a sprained MCL and O.C. Darrell Bevell said, "I think it depends on the injury. It still is the preseason. One, it's important like you said to make it back to show he can tough it out. But if it's a situation where it's not going to help us or help him then you probably don't do that. We just have to see. I know he's a tough kid. He has a legitimate injury. He's pushing hard to get back."

Our View:The third preseason game is important as it is considered a dress rehearsal for Week 1. Jackson ranked as a No. 2 fantasy quarterback prior to getting hurt, and should be drafted as a No. 3 right now to be safe.
August 20, 2008
Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson did some work in practice today, and there is a possibility that he could play in the team's preseason game against Pittsburgh on Saturday, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Our View:Jackson has a sprained MCL, and the team will be cautious with him, as their championship hopes ride largely on his shoulders. However, he is someone for fantasy owners to ride to a championship, and he should not even be a backup on fantasy squads at this junction of his career.
August 19, 2008
Head coach Brad Childress hasn't made a decision regarding Tarvaris Jackson's status for Saturday's preseason game. The quarterback sprained the MCL in his right knee last Saturday. "I really have not. He certainly hasn’t either," Childress tells the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Gus Frerotte would start if Jackson were out. The Vikings plan to play their starters into the third quarter.

Our View:Jackson is doing his best to follow in the footsteps of Steve McNair and Donovan McNabb, at least when it comes to injuries. We expect him to be fully ready for Week 1, but his low fantasy value may not have a chance to rise this preseason.
August 18, 2008
Coach Brad Childress admitted that Tarvaris Jackson was limited in practice Monday due to a sprained MCL, but he wouldn't rule Jackson out for Saturday's preseason tilt against the Steelers, according to the Pioneer Press. "Guys don't always feel chipper the first part of the week when they get dinged up but they find a way to push to Saturday," Childress said. "That's how he's approaching the thing and that's how we're approaching the thing."

Our View:Jackson is expected to be ready for Week 1 regardless of whether he plays anymore during the exhibition season or not. That said, we wouldn't expect much from a rusty quarterback who wasn't very good to begin with.
August 18, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson's next start in the preseason is uncertain due to his sprained MCL, according to the Star Tribune. He could miss Saturday's contest against the Steelers, which is an important game, as it is considered a dress rehearsal for the regular season. Jackson's status for the preseason finale at Dallas on August 28 also is unknown.

Our View:The team is expected to give an update on his status today after practice. The coaching staff has been pleased with Jackson's progress this off-season and through training camp, but his development is being compromised by the injury.
August 17, 2008
ProFootballTall.com states that Tarvaris Jackson sustained a sprained MCL during battle with the Ravens.

Our View:He is expected to be able to return for the team’s final preseason game, and is already riding a stationary bike at the team facility. He shouldn't fall down fantasy draft boards at this time.
August 16, 2008
The early word on quarterback Tarvaris Jackson is promising. "He’s fine," head coach Brad Childress informs the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "He’s got a bump on the knee. We’re keeping him in at half to get some ice on it. He’s got a contusion." Jackson injured his right knee during the second drive of Saturday's preseason game against the Ravens.

Our View:Jackson has struggled to avoid injuries in his brief career, but it sounds like he dodged anything serious this time around.
August 16, 2008
Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson injured his right knee during the second drive of the preseason game on Saturday. He stayed in the game despite his limp and was eventually helped to the bench, the Minneapolis Star Tribune notes. Jackson remained on the sidelines with ice on his knee. Gus Frerotte took his place.

Our View:The Vikings likely wouldn't let T-Jack hang around on the sidelines if they thought this was serious. We'll let you know when more information is available.
August 9, 2008
The Minnesota Vikings continue to express their pleasure with young starting quarterback Tarvaris Jackson , according to the Associated Press. The Vikes opened with 12 consecutive pass plays in their first preseason game of the season, putting Jackson and his receivers to the test with hopes of boosting their confidence and setting a tone for the rest of the preseason. Jackson completed 8-of-11 passes for 118 yards and one touchdown, with a long pass of 28 yards. The Vikings had five turnovers, but none by their starting quarterback

Our View:This is great news for fantasy owners who have gambled on Jackson a sleeper at the position, though expectations should remain tempered. After all, this is the preseason, but it appears the team has every desire to show support for Jackson following the drama of the Brett Favre scenario and the constant rumors of a move to Minnesota that followed. If Jackson can be this productive in 2008, the Vikings could surprise in a weak NFC North.
July 16, 2008
With the Favre saga looming over the NFL, Vikings coach Brad Childress wants to make it clear that Tarvaris Jackson is the man. Childress told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, "I just think he's right where he needs to be in terms of being a third-year quarterback... He understands what it means to play an NFL season as a starter with all eyes on him, dissecting everything."

Our View:Jackson went 8-4 as a starter last season with a 58 percent completion percentage for 1,911 yards and nine touchdowns with 11 interceptions.
June 25, 2008
The Minnesota Vikings are likely to see a lot of blitzing until quarterback Tarvaris Jackson proves he can make sound decisions in the face of pressure, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:It’s difficult to grade offseason practices for such a specific element, but team insiders say Jackson has proven to be more calm in the face of pressure in terms of decision making, getting rid of the ball more cleanly and effectively and standing in the pocket amid a heavy rush. The Vikings are expected to make the playoffs in 2008, so the pressure will be on Jackson to step up his game this year.
June 7, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson has impressed everyone with the Vikings with his work in the early going, according to the Associated Press. "There’s no hesitation when he calls plays,” backup QB Gus Frerotte said. “He’s very confident with himself and how he’s handling himself in the huddle and with the other players. That’s really good to see. That’s all about being a leader and being a quarterback.”

Our View:Frerotte should know has he has played caddy to some of the better QBs in the league in his career. Jackson has a long way to go to impress fantasy gamers, but he will be supported by the best rushing attack in the NFC.
May 16, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson has at least one Viking firmly in his corner, and that is C Matt Birk who was very complimentary during a radio interview, according to Twin Cities.com. “This is the year," Birk said. "Do I think he has what it takes? Absolutely! Is it going to be ups and downs, bumps in the road? Absolutely. But I think he’s coming along. … I think he’s got what it takes. Obviously, it’s a big year for him and a big year for us, but I feel very good with him being our quarterback.”

Our View:With Gus Frerotte the only experienced backup the Vikes better hope that Tarvaris can take the next step this year and avoid the indecision and INT problems that plagued him last year. Adding WR Bernard Berrian should help.
April 2, 2008
The Minnesota Vikings and vice president of player personnel, Rick Spielman, have agreed to a contract extension, according to the Palm Beach Post. Spielman is entering his second season in Minnesota, and was in charge of drafting Rookie of the Year Adrian Peterson last season.
March 31, 2008
The NFL will announce this afternoon that the Minnesota Vikings will play the Green Bay Packers in the Monday night opener at 6 p.m. Sept. 8 on ESPN, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The game is expected to be played at Lambeau Field and will be the first for the Packers in the post-Brett Favre era.
March 19, 2008
Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier was rewarded with the added title of assistant head coach, head coach Brad Childress announced this afternoon, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "I think it's something that's a natural progression for him," Childress said in a conference call. "He's done a tremendous job." Childress highlighted Frazier's leadership among his staff and his players. Childress also said ownership supported the decision.
February 22, 2008
Tarvaris Jackson, who entered the league as a raw prospect, continues to be the frontrunner to hold down the starting quarterback job in Minnesota, according to the Star Tribune. “I’m committed to him coming into training camp,” HC Brad Childress said. “His record is 8-4 in 12 starts.” Childress also made remarks that he likes competition at all positions on his football team, and that the franchise is interested in veteran QB Trent Green, most likely in a reserve capacity. Jackson, who predictably was very inconsistent last year, is a work in progress that possesses excellent athletic ability. He will have to improve on his decision-making abilities to retain the job for a full season in 2008.
