Troy Smith returned to practice at full speed for the first time this season since suffering a tonsil infection, according to NFL.com.

Our View:Smith loss 20 pounds through his sickness and now will workout as the Ravens third string quarterback.
October 5, 2008
Ravens inactives: QB Troy Smith (3rd QB), CB Samari Rolle, S Dawan Landry, CB Derrick Martin, OT Oniel Cousins, G/T David Hale, WR Marcus Smith, NT Kelly Gregg.

Our View:Running back Willis McGahee (chest, ribs) is active and expected to start. The Ravens defense could be a tad more vulnerable than normal, as they are missing several key defenders including: Samari Rolle, Dawan Landry and Kelly Gregg.
September 24, 2008
Troy Smith has finally rejoined his Raven teammates on the practice field after battling a severe case of tonsilitis and a blood clot. While Smith works on gaining some weight back and conditioning, he will quarterback the practice squad, according to the Ravens official web site.

Our View:It will be at least a couple of weeks before Smith will be back to full strength. It will be interesting to see if Smith will challenge rookie Joe Flacco for the starting role.
September 17, 2008
The Baltimore Sun reports that Troy Smith has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Cleveland as he tries to recover from the significant weight loss due to tonsilitis.

Our View:Smith should be able to gain his strength back relatively soon and when he does, expect him to compete with Joe Flacco for the starter's job.
September 15, 2008
Troy Smith has been cleared to resume light conditioning work, but it is unclear when he will see the field again. Smith is coming back from a severe bout of tonsillitis, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:With Smith still recovering, the Ravens will continue to go with rookie, Joe Flacco, as the starter and Todd Bouman, as the backup.
September 13, 2008
Troy Smith has been ruled out of action for Week 2, according to the Carroll County Times. He is coming back from tonsillitis.

Our View:Todd Bouman will back up Joe Flacco Monday.
September 7, 2008
Quarterback Troy Smith (illness) is inactive for Week 1 against the Bengals.

Our View:The Ravens will lean on rookie passer Joe Flacco, for better or for worse. Smith may need a couple weeks to regain weight and possibly push for playing time.
September 5, 2008
The Ravens' medical staff stated that Troy Smith's form of tonsilitis is very rare and was contracted by only 100 people in the last 50 years, according to ESPN.

Our View:Smith has lost 20 pounds due to the illness and is going to need two to three more weeks to get back into playing weight in order to return to the gridiron.
September 2, 2008
Troy Smith has been released from the hospital after being admitted for a severe tonsil infection, according to the Carroll County Times.

Our View:The ailment has drained him for the past several weeks, and he lost 20 pounds as a result. Smith remains on antibiotics, and the Ravens ruled him out of practice for an undetermined period of time. In case you missed it, rookie Joe Flacco has been slated to start in Week 1 against Cincinnati.
August 29, 2008
Ravens quarterback Troy Smith had to be taken to the hospital as the infection in his tonsils worsened, and he will remain there for at least two days, according to the Carroll County Times.

Our View:Smith had an opportunity to be the Ravens starter before this illness sidelined him for the team's last two games. It is looking more and more like Joe Flacco will be under center when Week 1 rolls around.
August 28, 2008
Troy Smith will not be active for the Ravens game on Thursday night as he continues to be too weak to play because of tonsilitis, according to the Baltimore Sun. Joe Flacco will make his second straight start and be backed up by Casey Bramlet.

Our View:Not good. The Ravens will likely be out of action in the early going, and though Flacco has the arm to make all the throws, he is extremely raw leaving the Ravens with a major problem under center right now.
August 28, 2008
Troy Smith will be a game-time decision for the Ravens' preseason finale against Arizona due to tonsilitis, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:Kyle Boller is not going to play due to his serious shoulder injury, so rookie Joe Flacco can make his second consecutive start at quarterback tonight if Smith is unable to go. None of the Ravens' quarterbacks should be drafted in fantasy leagues.
August 25, 2008
Ravens quarterback Troy Smith missed practice again on Monday, but the team did not rule him out of starting Thursday in the team's final preseason game, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:Smith is having problems with his tonsils, as they continue to be swollen. He was the presumptive favorite to win the starting job, and still is, but he'll need to get back on the field soon. Either way, he does not warrant a spot on fantasy rosters.
August 23, 2008
Troy Smith was scratched from Saturday's start due to a viral illness, according to the AP. Joe Flacco started instead.

Our View:This hurts Smith's chances at locking up the starting job, but he should still be considered the favorite.
August 23, 2008
Troy Smith will start tonight's game against the Rams, and it is crucial for him to perform well in his bid to lock up the starting job for Week 1, according to the Baltimore Sun. Smith said, "Chances are going to come. Opportunities are going to come. I have to make the best of them."

Our View:If Smith struggles tonight, it will give Kyle Boller another chance to retain the starting job. Smith has more upside and is more confident, but has been a disappointment so far in the preseason, completing just 47.1 percent of his passes and notching a 41.1 rating, both of which are lows among Ravens' quarterbacks.
August 20, 2008
Troy Smith will be starting the Ravens next preseason game against the Rams, according to the AP. It is possible he could play as much as three quarters in the contest.

Our View:Smith would seem to have the inside edge, considering this move. Starters usually play more than a half in the third preseason game, which it looks like Smith will do. Either way, he has very minimal fantasy value.
August 16, 2008
Quarterback Troy Smith failed to impress in his start against the Vikings on Saturday. He completed 3-of-5 passes for 25 yards and an interception. Smith added 35 yards on three rushing attempts.

Our View:The only good news is that Kyle Boller didn't turn any heads with his boring outing. The quarterback competition appears to be as wide-open as ever.
August 13, 2008
Via telecast, Sal Paolantonio has filed a report from Baltimore Ravens training camp stating the coaching staff is no closer to selecting a starting quarterback for Week 1 of the regular season, but (a) the veteran players on the team are quietly supporting Troy Smith, (b) offensive coordinator Cam Cameron appears to lean Kyle Boller, and (c) an unnamed source from the organization suggests rookie Joe Flacco will not be receiving consideration for the job, according to ESPN.

Our View:Boller turned the ball over three times in the Ravens' preseason opener, but he'll have three more chances to showcase improvement. If he does not, Smith may get a shot at it. While ESPN reports Flacco will not get consideration for Week 1, the absence of commitment to hold him out all season long seems to suggest the Ravens could turn to the rookie later in the season if both Boller and Smith fail to impress. Stay tuned.
August 9, 2008
Ravens quarterback Troy Smith had a poor practice on Saturday, getting intercepted three times on his first eight passes, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:Smith was bad, but the paper also reported that Joe Flacco and Kyle Boller struggled as well. None of these players should be anywhere close to fantasy rosters at the moment.
August 8, 2008
Coach John Harbaugh decided that Troy Smith will start the Ravens' next preseason game, according to the Baltimore Sun. Boller started the first game of the preseason against the Patriots, and had two costly turnovers. Joe Flacco failed to impress as well.

Our View:Smith has a good shot to be the starting quarterback for the Ravens, and will improve his chances if he fares well in his next outing with the first-team offense.
August 1, 2008
Ravens quarterback Troy Smith missed the first portion of the team's practice today, but for good reason, according to the Baltimore Sun. Smith was taking a drug test, but he had problems providing a sample, so he had to wait around until he was able to go, and wound up missing more than an hour of activities.

Our View:In his absence, Kyle Boller and Joe Flacco took the snaps, and both were reportedly off their game. Smith has a real shot to be the Ravens starter at QB, but should probably drink more fluids to remain hydrated.
July 28, 2008
Troy Smith had the best day of practice Monday among the Ravens' quarterbacks, according to the Baltimore Sun. Smith rolled out twice for touchdowns in goal-line situations against the starting defense. Smith's best play of the day came when he pump-faked to a running back in the right flat, then fired a pass to rookie wide receiver Justin Harper, who was wide open 20 yards downfield and jogged into the end zone.

Our View:Kyle Boller was given the bulk of the reps with the first-team offense, but didn't do anything to stand out, nor did rookie Joe Flacco. Smith continues to hold a slight edge in the battle for the starting quarterback job in Baltimore.
July 22, 2008
Troy Smith took the first snaps at practice Tuesday in red-zone drills, but went 1-for-5 with three interceptions, according to the Baltimore Sun. He also fumbled a snap. Rookie Joe Flacco only went 1-for-3 during the same drill, but his lone completion was a tough pass over the middle to Patrick Carter.

Our View:The quarterback battle in Baltimore should be among the closest in the league, with Smith the slight leader for the job heading into training camp.
July 13, 2008
Troy Smith is in the lead in the battle to become the starting quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens because of his lack of mistakes, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:Smith is short (how can he possibly throw it over the head of 6-foot-9 left tackle Jared Gaither?) and his long wind-up means he is slow to get rid of the ball. That said, he obviously has talent so it would be interesting to watch what he could do with the ball. That said, stay away from him in fantasy leagues.
June 18, 2008
Don Banks of SI.com is on the Troy Smith bandwagon. He says Smith has made huge strides this offseason and is ahead of Kyle Boller on the depth chart. "When Cam (Cameron) was head coach at Indiana, he coached Antwaan Randle-El (at quarterback) and made him maybe the most dangerous player in college football," a Ravens source explains. "We're doing some very exciting things with Troy Smith, and he's much better than people are expecting." Banks adds that Smith's only competition for the Week 1 job is rookie Joe Flacco.

Our View:We'd be surprised if the Ravens pushed Flacco that quickly. Both Cameron and head coach John Harbaugh have been around situations with prized rookie passers (Donovan McNabb, Philip Rivers), and they're likely to show patience. Frankly, we're excited to see what Smith brings. We don't expect much fantasy value, but the former Heisman winner is a gamer with guts. A lack of size didn't stop Cameron from turning Drew Brees into a star. Why should it hurt Smith?
June 5, 2008
Troy Smith has to overcome the presence of Kyle Boller and Joe Flacco, but that doesn't mean that he hasn't impressed the Ravens to the point that whispers are starting to grow that he might have a legitimate shot to be behind center in Week 1, according to NFL.com.

Our View:Smith is a strong presence in the huddle and in the locker room who never takes a snap off. He continues to work hard despite some physical limitations, but it still appears that he may have actually played himself into a legitimate shot at starting this year.
May 28, 2008
Troy Smith has outplayed all other quarterbacks on the Ravens roster during minicamps, according to the Baltimore Sun. "I really love his confidence, because he believes there is nothing that he can't do playing the quarterback position," quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson said.

Our View:Coach John Harbaugh has said no one is going to win a position battle during minicamps, but Smith has at least showed so far that he deserves the starting job over Kyle Boller and Joe Flacco.
May 7, 2008
Despite the addition of QB Joe Flacco, and the presence of presumptive starter Kyle Boller, there is a chance that Troy Smith could end up the Ravens starter at quarterback, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:According to the report the team has been very impressed with the growth that Smith has shown, which when added to his athleticism and confidence, marks him as a player to watch. If we were handicapping this race we would go with Boller, but there is a whole lot of time until Week 1.
