Newsbreakers
January 8, 2009
Interim head coach Tom Cable met with Raiders' owner Al Davis to discuss his future with the franchise, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:Cable is still fighting to remain in Oakland, unlike defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who is believed to be ready to accept a job with the Browns.

The AP reports that Raiders owner Al Davis held a 90-minute phone conversation with Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride. Gilbride had expressed interest in the job through his agent prior to the conversation.

Our View:Gilbride's name has not come up in many other coaching searches and he is the first outside candidate to have interviewed with the Raiders. Gilbride would certainly be an upgrade over Tom Cable and it appears he may have the inside track.

Quarterback JaMarcus Russell completed 14-of-21 passes for 148 yards, two scores, and one interception in the Week 17 win over the Buccaneers.

Our View:Russell finished his second season well, tossing multiple touchdowns in each of the last three games. The former first overall pick still has a ways to go before we'll trust him in fantasy circles, but it's nice to see these baby steps.

Al Davis did not make the trip to Tampa and won't be in the owner's box when the Raiders visit the Buccaneers on Sunday. He has swelling in his right ankle and knee. "The doctors told him it's probably not the best thing to spend 10 or 12 hours in the air," executive John Herrera informs ESPN.com. Davis has attended every game since 1979.

Our View:Davis usually plays through such injuries, but he is getting a little old. We wonder if he will still call in plays or defensive changes from the other side of the country.
December 26, 2008
The Houston Chronicle reports that JaMarcus Russell has only completed 7-of-41 pass attempts of 20 yards or longer.

Our View:He has only completed 53 percent of his passes all season, but this is clearly a facet of his game that the Raiders will attempt to improve on before next season.
