Newsbreakers
December 30, 2007
JaMarcus Russell had a solid first NFL start in Week 17, completing 23-of-31 passes (74.2 percent) for 224 yards with one TD and one INT. The No. 1 overall pick didn't get much experience this year, but it would be a surprise if he's not the Raiders starting quarterback next season.
December 24, 2007
JaMarcus Russell will make his first pro start next week against San Diego. He's been very spotty in limited action to this point, completing just 13-of-35 passes, with three interceptions.
December 21, 2007
JaMarcus Russell and Josh McCown might both see snaps in Week 16's game at Jacksonville. We're hoping you're not tied closely to any part of the Oakland offense this week, now that Justin Fargas is out of the picture.
December 11, 2007
JaMarcus Russell won't start in Week 15, but he will see some action against the Colts, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
December 9, 2007
The Raiders have listed rookie JaMarcus Russell as their third quarterback for today’s battle in Green Bay. This makes it unlikely Russell will see any time today, not that he was a fantasy option anyways. If the game gets out of hand, the Raiders by rule could bring him in during the fourth quarter.
December 5, 2007
Raiders coach Lane Kiffin is unsure as to who will start this Sunday in Green Bay, he did mention that it is between Daunte Culpepper and Josh McCown, leaving JaMarcus Russell holding a clipboard at least for the time being. Russell saw his first NFL action last week, but evidently is not ready to start. McCown and Culpepper have each started six games for the Raiders this season.
December 2, 2007
JaMarcus Russell made his NFL debut against Denver on Sunday. He led two drivers, completing 4-of-6 passes for 46 yards, before Josh McCown re-entered the game. Russell, who nearly botched a handoff to LaMont Jordan and fumbled a shotgun snap for an eight-yard loss, could see sporadic play over the next couple of weeks, but it doesn't appear the Raiders are ready to hand him the starting job just yet.
December 1, 2007
JaMarcus Russell is expected to be the No. 2 quarterback this week and will likely see some game action, according to the Oakland Tribune. Josh McCown is the probable starter, as Daunte Culpepper is dealing with a sore quad.
November 19, 2007
Raiders coach Lane Kiffin rejected an ESPN report that JaMarcus Russell will start Dec. 2 against the Broncos, so long as Daunte Culpepper doesn't play so well that making a switch wouldn't make sense. "That's a premature report," Kiffin told the Contra Costa Times. "It's news to me, at least." Culpepper will start again in Week 12, regardless. Beyond that, time will tell if the Raiders will be ready to hand the controls over to the rookie.
September 25, 2007
The Raiders added JaMarcus Russell to their 53-man roster on Monday. They previously had an exemption because of the No. 1 overall pick's holdout. "I'm just trying to make myself ready whenever Coach calls on me," Russell tells the Oakland Tribune.
September 13, 2007
Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin didn't hide the fact that JaMarcus Russell will start when he is ready. When will that be? "I won't put a ceiling on him," Kiffin tells the Oakland Tribune. "We'll push him to play for us. That may be after the bye (week, Oct. 7), that may be a year from now. We'll see. We'll see how far he can go, and he'll play when he's ready to play." Due to a roster exemption, the Raiders do not have to place Russell on the 53-man roster until September 26.
September 12, 2007
JaMarcus Russell officially signed a contract on Wednesday morning, and the Raiders will hold a press conference at 3 p.m. to announce the deal. The Sacramento Bee confirms that the six-year contract is worth $68 million, with $31 in guarantees.
September 10, 2007
ESPN reported Monday that top overall draft choice JaMarcus Russell and the Raiders have agreed to terms on a six-year contract, which would end the long holdout by the former LSU standout. Russell is expected to sign the deal Tuesday and be in uniform for practice Wednesday.
September 7, 2007
The Raiders and top overall draft choice JaMarcus Russell are set to get together Friday for face-to-face negotiations for the first time in two weeks, according to ESPN. Russell is the only unsigned first round draft pick.
September 5, 2007
The Raiders and top overall draft pick JaMarcus Russell are getting closer to a contract agreement according to Russell’s uncle and advisor, Ray Russell. "They realize they have dropped the ball, and they started negotiating in good faith," Ray Russell told USA Today Wednesday.
August 23, 2007
Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin says that team reps met with JaMarcus Russell and his agents in Los Angeles on Monday. "They're still knocking away at it," Kiffin tells the San Jose Mercury News. "That's really the first time (in several weeks) they've been together in person, with everybody together at a meeting, so I would assume that would be positive."
August 2, 2007
Raiders owner Al Davis clarified the impasse with quarterback JaMarcus Russell's contract on Wednesday. "It's not money," Davis tells the Sacramento Bee. "That's ridiculous. It's the option bonus. They want all the money in option bonuses. And (his agents) have the first choice they've ever had, and they've got to come through with a decent deal. Otherwise, they are done in the market. That is the story on JaMarcus." Sources close to the negotiations say that the total money does, in fact, remain a problem.
July 26, 2007
Neither side is commenting on the talks, but JaMarcus Russell's agent, Eric Metz, continues to negotiate a deal with the Raiders, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Metz is looking to secure Russell $30 million in guaranteed money. Even once a deal is agreed upon, the contract must go through lawyers and be approved by the league office, which could take a few days.
July 10, 2007
The two sides continue to talk, but it's possible that JaMarcus Russell and the Raiders won't get a contract signed prior to the opening of training camp, John Clayton of ESPN.com reports. Russell could receive close to $30 million in guaranteed money.
April 28, 2007
JaMarcus Russell was the first pick of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Raiders. A quarterback has now been picked No. 1 in eight of the last 10 years.
April 28, 2007
The Raiders are expected to select JaMarcus Russell with the No. 1 overall selection in today's draft, according to ESPN's Michael Smith. It's hard not to think of the success Daunte Culpepper had throwing to Randy Moss while with the Vikings. Of course, it's also hard not to think of just how bad the Raiders have been in recent years or the trade rumors involving Moss. Russell will have his work cut out for him as a rookie but could still make some fantasy noise.
