Week 13 inactives: QB Matt Gutierrez (3rd), WR Kelley Washington, RB LaMont Jordan, OT Wesley Britt, G Billy Yates, TE Tyson DeVree, DE Ty Warren, LB Adalius Thomas.

Our View:Richard Seymour, Tedy Bruschi, and Ellis Hobbs are active, but the defense is weaker without Warren and Thomas. The Patriots backfield is still a three-headed monster, even without Jordan.

Week 7 inactives: QB Matt Gutierrez (3rd), WR Kelley Washington, CB Terrence Wheatley, RB LaMont Jordan, LB Eric Alexander, OT Nick Kaczur, DE Jarvis Green, and LB Shawn Crable.

Our View:No surprises here. Jordan and Kaczur were both listed as doubtful. Sammy Morris will start at running back, and Kevin Faulk should help carry the load.

Matt Gutierrez has been promoted from the Patriots' practice squad, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Matt Cassel will start Sunday's game against the Jets, with rookie Kevin O'Connell slated as the primary backup. Gutierrez looks to hold the clipboard.
September 10, 2008
Quarterback Matt Gutierrez was signed to the Patriots practice squad, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Gutierrez was thought to be a challenger for the No. 2 quarterback job in training camp, but Matt Cassel won out, and Gutierrez was released. He was on the team last year, however, and with Tom Brady's injury, the team needed another QB.
May 28, 2008
Matt Gutierrez appears primed to threaten Matt Cassel for the No. 2 quarterback job behind Tom Brady, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Besides throwing a nice ball with apparent ease, Gutierrez continues to display a strong work ethic. He was the last player off the field, staying late to work with tight end Stephen Spach, and also the first player to finish in the end-of-practice sprints (along with OLB Vince Redd).
