Lawrence Timmons made his first start at outside linebacker in place of the injured LaMarr Woodley (calf) Sunday against the Colts, and fared well as he finished third on the team with five tackles (four solo), according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:If Woodley is unable to return in Week 11 against San Diego, Timmons would be worth a look in deeper IDP leagues.

Larry Foote will start at inside linebacker, but Lawrence Timmons will still see plenty of action in the 3-4 base defense as well as in nickel packages, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Coach Mike Tomlin said, "The thing is with those guys we're blessed with great depth at the linebacker position (also including James Farrior). I couldn't care less who runs out of the tunnel. That's irrelevant. What is relevant is that those three play football for us because they're playmakers. You'll see that on Sunday."

Our View:Timmons has the skills to be a playmaker in the NFL, and could hold favorable value in the sacks and turnovers department as a deep reserve in IDP leagues.

Reports from the Steel City indicate the team is enjoyin the position battle being waged at linebacker, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. The combatants: up and coming youngster Lawrence Timmons and incumbent starter Larry Foote.

Our View:Foote, a former fourth-round draft pick from Michigan entering his seventh NFL season, has made 64 consecutive regular-season starts and ranked third on the team last year with 69 tackles. Timmons, 22, is six years younger than Foote, and his closing speed makes him a legitimate threat as a playmaker. The 6-1, 234-pounder is expected to play considerably more this season. Early reports give the edge to Foote, but that could change. Stay tuned.

Lawrence Timmons helped keep the Eagles out of the end-zone with two excellent plays on their first drive in the Steelers' preseason opener, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. On first down at the 13, quarterback Donovan McNabb completed a pass on the right side to Correll Buckhalter that mustered just three yards because Timmons closed quickly on the play and tackled him. Then, on third down from the 10, McNabb threw a pass into the left back corner of the end zone to Jason Avant that Timmons knocked away. Coach Mike Tomlin is excited about Timmons and said, "It was really what we expected. He showed us the things that he has been showing us in Latrobe and that he has been showing us even going back into the spring at the South Side facility. Lawrence is a run-and-hit guy. He did that tonight and made some plays for us."

Our View:Timmons is projected to start over veteran Larry Foote at inside linebacker this season, alongside James Farrior. Timmons, who was a first-round pick for Pittsburgh last season, has potential to emerge as a solid sleeper for 2008.

Lawrence Timmons , a 2007 first-round pick, is expected to challenge veteran Larry Foote for the Steelers' outside linebacker job this summer, this according to the Sporting News.

Our View:Timmons is athletic but hasn't been impressive in coverage. Outperforming the incumbent Foote will mean Timmons will have to show significant improvement over his first Training Camp.
