Newsbreakers
November 30, 2008
Tony Gonzalez had eight catches for 110 yards in Week 13.

Our View:Gonzalez now has 110 or more receiving yards in three of his last four games. He is clearly Tyler Thigpen's top target at this point in the season.
November 23, 2008
Tony Gonzalez had a huge game in Week 12 with 10 receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown.

Our View:He has been especially good in PPR leagues with at least five catches in each of his last six games.
November 21, 2008
Tony Gonzalez (ankle) was a full participant in Friday's practice and he is not listed on the team's injury report, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:It appears safe to have Gonzalez in your lineups this week. He has 55 catches and five touchdowns on the season.
November 19, 2008
Tony Gonzalez missed Wednesday's practice while nursing knee and ankle ailments, according to the Chiefs' official website.

Our View:We will keep you posted on his status heading into Week 12 against the Bills. The 32-year-old vet has only missed two regular season games over his entire career.
November 16, 2008
Updating an earlier injury report, tight end Tony Gonzalez has reentered the game against New Orleans in the second quarter.

Our View:Great news for the fantasy owners of Gonzo, who has posted four receptions for 28 yards, thus far.
November 16, 2008
Tony Gonzalez exited the game against New Orleans in the first quarter with an apparent foot injury.

Our View:Gonzo, who is walking gingerly on the sideline, doesn't appear to be seriously injured. We will provide additional updates as information becomes available.
November 9, 2008
Chiefs Tony Gonzalez has caught at least 50 passes for the 11th consecutive season, which is the most by a tight end in NFL history, according to the AP.

Our View:Gonzalez also registered his 24th career 100-yard receiving game, tying him with former NFL TE Kellen Winslow Sr. for the most 100-yard games by a tight end.
October 26, 2008
Tight end Tony Gonzalez caught six passes for 79 yards and a touchdown in the Week 8 loss to the Jets.

Our View:That's back-to-back big days for the future Hall of Famer. Maybe it's a good thing the Chiefs didn't trade him, huh?
October 19, 2008
Despite losing his first- and second-string quarterbacks due to injury, tight end Tony Gonzalez still managed to haul in six balls for 97 yards in the Week 7 loss to Tennessee.

Our View:It was Gonzo's best yardage effort of the year, but he has only scored twice in six games, and could be catching passes from Tyler Thigpen next week against the New York Jets.
October 18, 2008
One team whose name was not brought up much, but who reportedly talked to the Kansas City Chiefs about trading for tight end Tony Gonzalez was the Philadelphia Eagles, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:They did not pull the trigger, as they have both L.J. Smith and Brent Celek, who both have promise but have added little production.
October 16, 2008
NFL.com reports that Tony Gonzalez could have been traded to the Bills but would not approve of the trade.

Our View:Gonzalez has been very vocal about his disappointment in not being traded but this report makes him look a bit like a hypocrite.
October 16, 2008
The Philadelphia Daily News reports that Chiefs president Carl Peterson said yesterday that it would have taken at least a second-round pick and probably more to get him to part with Tony Gonzalez . "All of them were talking about a second-day draft choice," Peterson said. "I told them that in my opinion, even at 32, Tony is as good as Jeremy Shockey. [If] you want to talk to me about something better than [what the Giants received for] Shockey, we'll talk. No one was willing to do that."

Our View:No wonder a deal was not completed. Teams were reluctant to pay such a steep price for a 32-year-old tight end. Gonzalez was irritated when no deal got done but he has pledged to handle it like a professional and not let the matter effect his play.
October 15, 2008
Tony Gonzalez didn't get traded at the deadline, and he's not happy about it, according to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer. "I'm shocked," he said. "It didn't make sense not to do this deal. It's winding down for me and this team is rebuilding... Last night I talked to Carl (Peterson, Chiefs President and GM) and I point-blank asked him what it would take to get it done. I wanted to know if it could happen with a fourth (-round pick). He started talking about a second and a fifth like the Shockey deal. Nobody is going to trade a second for a 32-year-old tight end. All along Carl said he would do something that works for both parties. Then he talked about how he traded a third for Willie Roaf, and he made it pretty clear to me that's what was going to get it done. That was certainly fair. I know teams offered a third and in the end, Carl made the asking price a second. I'm very disappointed that he didn't go through with it after he told me he was going to try to make it happen. I've been around this league a long time, it's a business. There's nothing I can do about it. I was pissed off about it, but I'll get over it. I won't let it affect my play and my preparation."

Our View:Gonzalez is right. A third-round pick in exchange for him would have made sense for the Chiefs and any of the teams the Chiefs were talking to. He's at least stated that he'll get over it and won't let his anger affect his play.
October 14, 2008
The Chiefs talked to the Eagles, Giants, Bills and Packers about Tony Gonzalez but ultimately decided to hang on to their future Hall of Famer, according to NFL.com's Adam Schefter. One team offered as much as a third-round pick, another offered a fourth-round pick and another offered a pick as well as a player, but president Carl Peterson couldn't bring himself to deal a player for whom he has a personal affection.

Our View:Gonzalez would have received a boost in fantasy value had he been traded to any of those places. As it is, he is stuck in Kansas City with Brodie Croyle throwing to him.
October 14, 2008
The Chiefs have postponed their regular Tuesday news conference until 4 p.m. Eastern Time, which NFL.com believes is an indication that Tony Gonzalez could be traded.

Our View:The Chiefs are fielding offers and asking for second- and fifth-round picks in return. It is the price that was paid for tight end Jeremy Shockey and defensive end Jason Taylor, and the Chiefs believe Gonzalez is worth as much as those recently traded stars.
October 12, 2008
FOX's Jay Glazer reports the Chiefs initially asked for a second and fifth-round pick for Tony Gonzalez, but it is believed that they would take less.

Our View:A Tony Gonzalez trade still seems far from certain to occur before Tuesday's deadline.
October 12, 2008
Adam Schefter of NFL.com reports the Giants, Packers and Bills are potential trade partners with the Chiefs for Tony Gonzalez, but "no one has offered serious value so far."

Our View:Earlier reports from the Kansas City Star indicated that the Chiefs were looking for a third-round pick. We will continue to track the trade rumors.
October 11, 2008
The Giants, Packers and Bills may have interest in acquiring tight end Tony Gonzalez, the Kansas City Star reports. The Chiefs and Giants have apparently talked but are far apart on compensation. The Giants offered a sixth-round pick, and the Chiefs asked for a third-round selection.

Our View:By comparison, the Giants received second and fifth-round picks in exchange for Jeremy Shockey. Gonzalez's production versus his age (32) will make negotiations tricky, but some team should end up offering much more than a lowly sixth-round pick.
October 11, 2008
Long-time Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez has requested a trade out of Kansas City, and the team is reportedly trying to accommodate him, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:Gonzalez is 32-years-old and still a productive player, but he is now in his 12th season and has only been in the playoffs on three occasions, losing every time.
October 5, 2008
Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez broke the NFL record for receiving yards by a tight end in the Chiefs loss to the Panthers, according to NFL.com. The record for most receiving yards by a tight end was held by Shannon Sharpe.

Our View:Gonzalez has been one of the best tight ends in the last five years. It has been a difficult year for the future hall of famer as the Chiefs QB position has really struggled.
September 30, 2008
Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez is upset that he likely will not be able to set the NFL record for receiving yards by a tight end, according to the Kansas City Star. "I’m highly disappointed. I wish I could have gotten it with a win against the Broncos, a home game, my whole family is there, they were going to do a little ceremony and stop the game and stuff," Gonzalez said.

Our View:The future Hall of Fame tight end needed just three more yards, and he was calling for the ball at the end of the game last week, but Chiefs coach Herm Edwards was insistent that they run the ball, and Larry Johnson got six straight handoffs. K.C. plays at Carolina next week, where he will probably break the record.
September 28, 2008
Tight end Tony Gonzalez had three receptions for 47 yards and one touchdown in the Week 4 win over Denver.

Our View:Gonzo has only compiled 18 receptions for 176 yards in four games this season, but he has scored a touchdown in two of the past three weeks.
September 28, 2008
At least three teams have internally debated the merits of trading for tight end Tony Gonzalez, according to NFL.com

Our View:Chiefs president Carl Peterson insisted this week he will not trade Gonzalez, and cannot be persuaded to make any such type of deal. On the flip side, Gonzo is an aging veteran who is still playing at a high level, so it might be in the best interests of a rebuilding club to see what they can get for him.
September 26, 2008
Tight end Tony Gonzalez needs 50 receiving yards this weekend to pass Shannon Sharpe for most yards ever produced by a tight end, according to The Denver Post. Sharpe produced 10.060 yards in his career.

Our View:Gonzo should break the record this weekend against the Chiefs long time rival, especially with the change at quarterback that will result in Damon Huard being under center.
September 14, 2008
Tony Gonzalez had five receptions for 39 yards and a touchdown in the Chiefs home loss to Oakland.

Our View:Gonzo was the only bright spot for the Chiefs offense on Sunday.
September 12, 2008
Tony Gonzalez is already the NFL's all-time leader among tight ends in receptions and touchdowns, and is closing in on the yardage record as well, according to the KC Star.

Our View:Gonzalez needs only 124 more receiving yards to pass Shannon Sharpe for the top spot. He may not set the record this Sunday at home against Oakland, but has reached at least 124 yards in 11 games in his career (two coming against the Raiders).
August 29, 2008
The Kansas City Chiefs, in an effort to boost revenue, are looking for a corporate sponsor to sell naming rights to Arrowhead Stadium, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:While the team is looking for a sponsor, they have ensured fans that the name "Arrowhead" will somehow still be involved. The team is looking for something in the neighborhood of $5.5 million per season.
July 30, 2008
Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez said he is 95% sure he will be back next season, but it's entirely possible he could stick around much longer, according to Pro Football Weekly. Gonzalez is 32 years old and stands to make a lot of money in the next few years, and he has never won a playoff game in his career, which he obviously would like to do.

Our View:It seems like Gonzalez is older than 32 because he has been a premier tight end for so long. He remains a fantasy stalwart at his position, and is coming off a 99-catch season.
July 7, 2008
The Sporting News reports that Tony Gonzalez helped a choking man on Thursday, possibly saving his life. Gonzalez was dining in Huntington Beach, Calif., when across the room a fellow diner, Ken Hunter, began to choke on a bite of steak. Gonzalez performed the Heimlich maneuver and cleared the passage way for the man to breath. "I just did what my natural instincts told me to do, help someone in need. I couldn't just sit there and do nothing. The man was in distress and he needed help quickly."

Our View:The report noted that Hunter will be "forever grateful" and will now be rooting for Gonzalez and his team in the upcoming season. Hunter is a Chargers fan. Mr. Hunter won't have much to cheer about as a Tony Gonzo and Kansas City Chiefs fan... on the other hand the Chargers are Super Bowl contenders.
June 22, 2008
Reports out of Kansas City indicate the Chiefs are giving a noteworthy focus to two-tight end sets in offensive workouts, according to Pro Football Weekly. PFW reports both Tony Gonzalez and rookie Brad Cottam are spending time in snaps with the team's starting unit, and both are getting plenty of targets.

Our View:This is of interest on two fronts for fantasy owners. First, one has to wonder just how many looks Cottam will get and how that will affect the value of Gonzalez, the long-standing target of choice in this offense. However, more importantly may be the team's need to provide better support for the run. Getting two blocking tight ends on the field could help the team mask their shortcomings at fullback, and with Larry Johnson struggling through abuse and durability concerns, the Chiefs need to do what they can to support his cause in staying on the field. Putting two tight ends on the field can't hurt.
May 28, 2008
Tony Gonzalez left for California on Tuesday and will remain away from the team through the weekend. He has a good reason. Gonzalez and his wife are expecting the birth of their second child, a daughter, the Kansas City Star reports.

Our View:We suppose Gonzo has proven himself enough to take a little time off in May. This move seems a little selfish, though. (Yes, we're being sarcastic.)
February 10, 2008
Future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez led all AFC receivers in Sunday's 42-30 Pro Bowl loss to the NFC. Gonzalez recorded four receptions for 79 yards. The all time tight end leader in receptions will be 32 next year, well past the point when most tight ends start showing a serious statistical decline.
