Olindo Mare will start the season opener Sunday against the Bills, according to the Seattle Times. The team kept Brandon Coutu on the roster, and he did not miss a field goal attempt in the preseason, but the Seahawks opted to go with Mare for Week 1. Mare held an edge for the job as he gets better distance on his kickoffs, and he said, "I know it was good for me to have a guy like Brandon in camp. I'm sure experience has something to do with it, and I'm sure kickoffs had a lot to do with it."

Our View:the Seahawks will have to clear two spots on the roster next week when Rocky Bernard and Jordan Babineaux are eligible to return from suspension, and Coutu could be expendable. Mare merits fantasy consideration as a No. 2 kicker.

Olindo Mare was more accurate and stronger than rookie Brandon Coutu during the Seahawks minicamp, the Tacoma News Tribune reports.

Our View:We'd expect the veteran to step during the spring, but the Mare-Coutu battle won't be decided until training camp and the preseason. We're pulling for the rookie because we've seen what Mare brings to the table and it isn't pretty.

Olindo Mare is going to compete with seventh- round draft pick Brandon Coutu (Georgia) for the placekicking job in Seattle, according to ProFootballTalk.

Our View:Coutu has a strong leg and has a knack for making clutch kicks under pressure. Mare still has a good leg, but his accuracy has slipped, as he only hit 10-of-17 field goal attempts in 2007. Mare has an edge in experience, but Coutu has more upside to be Josh Brown's replacement.

The Seahawks signed Olindo Mare to a two-year-deal last week, but they will look at the top kickers in the draft if they're available in the later rounds, according to the Tacoma News Tribune. Mare still has a very strong leg but has been extremely inaccurate in recent years. It sounds as if he'll have some competition for the starting job.
March 27, 2008
Olindo Mare has inked a two-year deal worth $3.5 million with the Seahawks, according to NFL.com. As of now Mare will replace Josh Brown on the depth chart, but they are expected to add some competition for him as well.
