Newsbreakers
Richard Bartel, QB Thursday 8/28, 10:38 PM CT
Richard Bartel led the Cowboys to a 16-10 victory over the Vikings as he threw 41 passes, completing 28, on his way to 233 yards.

Our View: Bartel spread the ball around with Tashard Choice and Keon Lattimore each hauling in six passes. Bartel is clearly behind Brad Johnson in the race to backup Tony Romo and is below a non-entity in fantasy leagues.
Montrae Holland, G Thursday 8/28, 2:32 PM CT
Dallas has acquired Montrae Holland from Denver in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick in 2009, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Our View: Holland lost his job with Denver at right guard. He will add depth to the Cowboys' line.
Pacman Jones, CB Thursday 8/28, 12:12 PM CT
Pacman Jones has been fully reinstated by the NFL, according to ESPN's Ed Werder.

Our View: This was pretty much a formality at this point. Pacman, at least as far as we know, has kept his nose clean lately.
Felix Jones, RB Wednesday 8/27, 11:18 AM CT
Cowboys first-round pick, running back Felix Jones, will probably be the team's kick returner for the team's first game of the season, but it will not be a full-time gig, lasting only until Isaiah Stanback and Miles Austin get healthy, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: The team does not want to expose Jones to injury more than necessary. He was a dynamic return man at Arkansas, but the Cowboys value his contributions to the offense more than they do on special teams.
Martellus Bennett, TE Wednesday 8/27, 10:36 AM CT
It has not been an easy training camp for Cowboys second-round pick tight end Martellus Bennett, and Jason Witten is trying to teach Bennett to get his act together, according to the Dallas Morning News. Bennett told the paper that Witten offered this response when asked for help early in camp, "I'm not going to be [beep] doing this all the [beep] time. You've got to know what the [beep] to do."

Our View: Bennett has come across as having little fire for the game of football, and has been someone the HBO program "Hard Knocks" has been focusing on as he has struggled. Bennett clearly has a long way to go, and holds no fantasy value at the moment.
Pacman Jones, CB Monday 8/25, 7:48 PM CT
Though the Cowboys do not particularly want to do it, there is a possibility that Pacman Jones will be returning kicks and punts for the team, according to the Dallas Morning News. The team's normal return men. Isaiah Stanbeck and Miles Austin, are currently out with injury. Felix Jones is also a possibility to return kicks.

Our View: Before going on a spree of felonious behavior, Pacman was one of the premier return men in the game. He certainly won't hurt fantasy owners who draft the Cowboys D/ST unit.
Isaiah Stanback, WR Saturday 8/23, 7:49 PM CT
Isaiah Stanback suffered a dislocated left shoulder in Friday's preseason win, according to the Dallas Morning News. The Cowboys will wait to see how Stanback responds to treatment before determining if he needs surgery or not.

Our View: Mike Jefferson and Danny Amendola might now have a better shot to make the team if Stanback's injury is serious.
Kyle Kosier, T Saturday 8/23, 7:46 PM CT
Kyle Kosier could miss up to six weeks because of a sprained right foot and hairline fracture, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: Joe Berger is the favorite to take over for Kosier at left guard.
Tony Romo, QB Friday 8/22, 11:09 PM CT
Tony Romo threw the ball well, and despite his interception, he did complete 15-of-19 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown to help lead Dallas over the Texans by the score of 23-22.

Our View: Romo is the third or fourth ranked QB on most fantasy boards, and with the potential knee problems Peyton Manning is going through, he could be as high as second.
Marion Barber, RB Friday 8/22, 11:01 PM CT
Marion Barber rumbled for 75 yards on 13 carries and scored a touchdown as Dallas beat the Texans 23-22 in preseason action.

Our View: Barber should get most of next week's game off and head into Week 1 of the season healthy and ready to put the ball in the end zone for fantasy owners.
Pacman Jones, CB Wednesday 8/20, 10:06 PM CT
Pacman Jones will be a starter at cornerback in the team's preseason game against the Texans, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: Jones has a good chance to start during the regular season no matter what, but it is a virtual certainty should Terrence Newman not recover quickly from his injury.
Anthony Spencer, LB Wednesday 8/20, 9:44 PM CT
Anthony Spencer, the Cowboys first-round selection in the 2007 draft, needed arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and will be out 2-4 weeks, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: The outside linebacker was pushing for a bigger role with the defense this season, and he was going to be used to rush the passer. However, it is possible he will miss the first game of the season with this malady.
Roy Williams, S Tuesday 8/19, 4:40 PM CT
Safety Roy Williams did not participate in team drills on Tuesday due to knee tendinitis, the Dallas Morning News reports. The ailment is not believed to be serious. Pat Watkins worked in his spot.

Our View: Six years of working on turf has a way of wearing down knees and ankles. It sounds like Williams should be fine.
Terence Newman, CB Tuesday 8/19, 1:59 PM CT
Dallas cornerback Terence Newman will return to practice this week and could be ready to play in the team's final preseason game on August 28, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: Newman had a strained groin, and he has been out three weeks. His return enhances the fantasy value of the Cowboys D/ST unit, as he is one of the top defensive backs in the league.
Felix Jones, RB Tuesday 8/19, 1:56 PM CT
Cowboys first-round pick, running back Felix Jones, will probably not be returning kicks season even though he excelled at it during his time at Arkansas, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: Of course, this is subject to change depending on how the season goes, but Jones is going to be an important part of the team's offense, and risking an injury to him on special teams is not worth the risk. Jones will be the change-of-pace back to Marion Barber, so his fantasy value is that of someone who should not be counted on week-to-week.
Miles Austin, WR Tuesday 8/19, 1:53 PM CT
Cowboys wide out Miles Austin will miss 4-6 weeks after spraining his knee, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: Austin was in line to be the team's third receiver this season, but that job now likely belongs to Sam Hurd.
Miles Austin, WR Sunday 8/17, 2:58 PM CT
Miles Austin has sustained a sprained MCL in his knee, according to DallasCowboys.com.

Our View: Austin will undergo an MRI on the knee Sunday, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doesn't expect Austin to play in the final two preseason games. Jones said the injury would not require surgery and he is optimistic it would not linger much into the regular season. He had the inside track on the No. 3 receiver role over Sam Hurd, but he could now fall behind in the race due to the injury. He has been playing the best football of his career prior to getting hurt.
Kevin Burnett, LB Thursday 8/14, 8:38 PM CT
Kevin Burnett will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to remove loos cartilage and will be back in around a week, according to the AP.

Our View: The injury is not serious, as the MRI he had earlier found no damage to the ACL or any other major parts in the knee.
Kevin Burnett, LB Thursday 8/14, 9:20 AM CT
Kevin Burnett underwent an MRI on his sprained left knee, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: The injury is believed to be minor, but the team will not know for sure until after the MRI. Burnett is working for a backup job at inside linebacker.
Kevin Burnett, LB Wednesday 8/13, 7:10 PM CT
Cowboys linebacker Kevin Burnett missed practice today and is suffering from a sprained left knee, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: There is no timetable for Burnett's return, and it is possible he may miss the team's preseason game on Saturday.
Brad Johnson, QB Wednesday 8/13, 5:59 PM CT
The Dallas Cowboys may not utilize Brad Johnson as the back-up quarterback this season as he has not looked good so far, according to Pro Football Weekly. The team is currently exploring other options, such as Chris Simms, Josh McCown and John Beck.

Our View: Johnson actually makes Chad Pennington look like he has a cannon for an arm. If a quarterback can't get the ball to the receiver, it will be difficult to have a passing game, so the Cowboys are doing their due diligence in the unfortunate event of a Tony Romo injury.
Pacman Jones, CB Wednesday 8/13, 4:07 PM CT
Pacman Jones has sent a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell asking for his reinstatement to the league, according to the Dallas Morning News. "It's just a letter why I feel I should be reinstated. It's my chance to respond and we'll see how it goes," he said.

Our View: After missing all of last season due to suspension, Jones isn't actually back in the league. It is expected that he will be reinstated, but one more slip-up and he could be gone forever.
Terence Newman, CB Tuesday 8/12, 4:32 PM CT
Cowboys corner Terence Newman will be back practicing with the Cowboys shortly, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: He isn't going to play in the team's next preseason game, but he could be back the week after. Dallas has a deep group of corners, but Newman remains a key part of their defense.
Felix Jones, RB Friday 8/8, 9:34 AM CT
The Cowboys are thrilled with rookie running back Felix Jones, namely for his potential as a pass-catcher, according to the Star-Telegram. The team feels Jones can make an immediate impact in the aerial attack, and in change-of-pace situations.

Our View: Marion Barber will likely get most of the carries on the ground, but Jones could hold favorable fantasy value in PPR leagues as a weapon in the passing game.
Marion Barber, RB Thursday 8/7, 12:31 PM CT
Cowboys' offensive coordinator Jason Garrett considers Marion Barber an every-down back, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: Garrett also calls rookie Felix Jones a special complementary back. Barber should be a top-10 fantasy back this season, and should see at least 250 carries over a full 16-game slate.
Mike Jenkins, CB Thursday 8/7, 9:22 AM CT
Mike Jenkins will fill in for the injured Terence Newman at left cornerback in Saturday's preseason game against San Diego, according to the Dallas Morning News. Jenkins said, "I probably will be hyped up, but my main focus is to stay calm and work in the system."

Our View: Jenkins is talented enough to start right away in the NFL, but the Cowboys are deep at the position (if Pacman Jones gets reinstated), and Jenkins should be limited to a nickel or dime role as a rookie.
Pacman Jones, CB Wednesday 8/6, 11:33 PM CT
Pacman Jones , the still-suspended cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys, is preparing for his debut with his new team, allowed to play in the preseason game on Saturday night at San Diego. However, the team still doesn't know when it will find out if he will be fully reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for the regular season, according to the Associated Press. Goodell has said only that a decision on "Pacman" would come before the regular season, and could come as late as the week of the Cowboys' opener September 7th at Cleveland.

Our View: Jones has been working primarily on the right side of the defense, listed behind starting cornerback Anthony Henry on the early depth chart. You can bet Pacman will be pushing to take that top spot when he does get on the field, and we expect the frustrations and turmoil of the last year to motivate him to new levels of performance. Stay tuned.
Martellus Bennett, TE Wednesday 8/6, 12:10 PM CT
Martellus Bennett has impressed the Cowboys' coaching staff, namely in the area of blocking, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: If Bennett is effective as a blocker, he would see the field more, and would allow Jason Witten to line up on the outside as a receiver at times.
Greg Ellis, LB Monday 8/4, 11:59 PM CT
Greg Ellis returned to the Cowboys practice field after suffering from back spasms over the weekend, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: The 33-year-old Ellis is splitting time with second-year pro Anthony Spencer, who is reportedly blowing people away with his performance, meaning Ellis needed to get back on the field pronto so he wouldn't get lost in the mix.
Marion Barber, RB Sunday 8/3, 12:12 PM CT
Will he be an every-down back? Earlier this offseason reporters put that question to Dallas coach Wade Phillips concerning running back Marion Barber , and the answer was "yes." Today's report out of Dallas indicates that is true, though he may not be carrying the ball on each of those downs. The Cowboys are experimenting with using both Barber and rookie Felix Jones in the same backfield — one formation that has Barber as a fullback and Jones lined up behind him, and another where Barber is in a one-back formation and Jones flexes out, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: The thought of using Barber as a fullback should sicken most fantasy owners, especially considering the price paid to add him to the roster in most fantasy leagues. However, you can bet Jones is going to get playing time and thus the news should not be that shocking. More than anything, the threat of additional opportunity for injury in serving as a lead blocker might be cause for concern. Meanwhile, the news of using Jones as a receiver is refreshing and could raise the rook's fantasy value.
Bobby Carpenter, LB Sunday 8/3, 11:23 AM CT
Reports from Dallas indicate linebacker Bobby Carpenter is making it awfully difficult to keep him out of the mix for snaps despite the deep roster of options at the position, according to the Dallas Morning News. Carpenter has spent the first week of training camp playing both inside linebacker positions and had his most productive practice Saturday morning. He intercepted a Tony Romo pass for what would have been a touchdown, knocked away a pass to tight end Martellus Bennett and put a hit on wide receiver Miles Austin.

Our View: For the loyal IDP fantasy owner, Carpenter has been on the radar for some time, but a lack of opportunity has hampered his rise. Thus far he has been penciled into the backup spot behind veteran Zach Thomas in the middle, but there is reason to believe that such status should not hide his potential. Thomas is no spring chicken and the Cowboys are going to need to keep him fresh by pushing Carpenter to the field to provide relief. Of course, Bradie James and Kevin Burnett are lined up on the inside as well, giving the Cowboys enviable depth and talent. That opens the door to trade rumors, but it sounds like Carpenter is a player to keep. We'll keep an eye on the situation as the fantasy implications could be rather sizeable.
Isaiah Stanback, WR Saturday 8/2, 5:08 PM CT
Jerry Jones is praising Isaiah Stanback, according to the Dallas Morning News. Jones said, "Look at him. That's a big guy. There's another part of him that we saw in the fall that just absolutely goes out there and makes some of the most phenomenal, athletic plays. He's got the hands. He's got the natural instincts to go up. He's straightaway fast, but he's got that make-you-miss stuff to go."

Our View: Stanback still needs to learn the ropes of playing receiver as a converted quarterback, but Jones believes he has big potential, and will be worth the wait. Stanback is worth targeting in keeper leagues following Jones' comments.
Greg Ellis, LB Friday 8/1, 5:28 PM CT
Greg Ellis was thought to be sidelined for the Cowboys afternoon practice on Friday due to a sore back, but he still managed to make it out onto the field, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: The team will likely be careful with the 33 year old this early in camp, so don't be alarmed if he misses a practice or two unless something more serious is announced.
