Newsbreakers
October 31, 2008
Patrick Marleau scored his sixth goal of the year in the Sharks' 4-2 win over Detroit.

Our View:Marleau is off to one of his best starts of his career with six games and 10 points in the Sharks first 11 games.
October 24, 2008
Patrick Marleau scored a goal for the Sharks as did Ryan Clowe and Joe Thornton in the Sharks loss to the Panthers.

Our View:Marleau is loving life skating on Thornton's left wing, who wouldn't, and he is off to a great start with five goals and nine points in eight games. With dual eligibility at center and left wing, Marleau is on his way to having one valuable fantasy season.
October 22, 2008
Patrick Marleau scored twice and registered two assists as the Sharks beat Philadelphia 7-6 in a shootout on Wednesday.

Our View:The four point performance gave Marleau eight points in seven games this season.
October 15, 2008
Patrick Marleau scored twice as the Sharks improved to 4-0-0 with their 5-2 victory over Columbus on Tuesday night.

Our View:The second goal was short-handed but the first was set up by his new linemate, Joe Thornton. Thornton is one of the league's best passers and Marleau's goal scoring should benefit greatly as a result.
October 5, 2008
Patrick Marleau and Brad Lukowich each scored a goal in the second period as the Sharks defeated the Kings 3-1 on Sunday.

Our View:Marleau is looking more and more likely to open the year on the left wing of the leagues best passer, Joe Thornton, and if that is the case a return to the level that produce an average of 82 points in 2005-06 seems very likely.
October 1, 2008
Patrick Marleau had a goal and two assists for the Sharks on Tuesday night against the Coyotes.

Our View:Marleau is coming off his worst season in years with just 49 points, and given that he has fallen off most fantasy players radar this season he is shaping up to be a fine value pick in the middle rounds.
September 29, 2008
Patrick Marleau scored just 19 goals and 48 points last season, and new HC Todd McLellan intends to allow him time to prove that he is still worthy of a big role, according to The Mercury News. "I think we need to give him some breathing room right now to see if the change is going to affect him positively or negatively," McLellan said. "I think he's excited about a fresh start and we have to let that evolve a little bit."

Our View:Marleau averaged 78 points over the two previous seasons making last years flop a shocking. With Marleau falling in drafts thus far, he would appear to be a nice target considering he is fully capable of returning to the 70-point level in the upcoming season.
June 30, 2008
Patrick Marleau has been mentioned in trade talks through the off-season, but his no-trade clause becomes effective on July 1, meaning he looks to remain with the Sharks unless he is dealt by tomorrow, according to the Mercury News.

Our View:Marleau has spent his entire NHL career with the Sharks since being selected with the second overall pick in 1997. He dipped to 19 goals over 78 games in 2007-08, but he could bounce back next season and challenge 30 goals once again.
June 18, 2008
The Sharks are attempting to trade Patrick Marleau to the Blue Jackets prior to July 1, the Ottawa Sun notes. The club wants to receive the Blue Jackets' No. 6 overall draft pick in return. Marleau has a two-year, $12.6 million that kicks in on July 1.

Our View:Marleau has spent his entire career in San Jose after becoming the second overall pick in 1997. His numbers were down in 2007-08, and we're not sure that joining the NHL's lowest-scoring club will help.
June 11, 2008
Ron Wilson is now the head coach of the Toronto Blue Jays, and though he had his differences with Patrick Marleau while in San Jose, he has nothing but kind words for his former captain, according to the San Jose Mercury News. "I would love to coach Patty Marleau again. We had our differences, but I've had differences with just about every player I've coached along the way," Wilson said. "Patty is a great player and he's going to continue to improve and he's going to be a great leader in San Jose."

Our View:Marleau's name will certainly once again come up in trade rumors this off-season, but after arguably the worst offensive season of his career, will there be any takers considering his salary?
May 2, 2008
Patrick Marleau scored a short-handed goal in Game 4, identical to his in Game 3. The Sharks captain streaked in, virtually untouched without resistance, and slammed a slap shot over Marty Turco's left shoulder to tie the game 1-1.

Our View:Marleau was an average scorer during the regular season but the threat he has become in the playoffs has meant everything to the team.
April 30, 2008
With their backs against the wall, the San Jose Sharks found a way to get the job done and earn a 2-1 win to avoid elimination in their Western Conference semifinal series against the Dallas Stars, their first win of the series now favoring Dallas 3-1. San Jose center Patrick Marleau scored the Sharks' first goal to tie the match at 1-1, putting a short-handed goal in the net off a turnover by Sergei Zubov.

Our View:Marleau wasn't a huge offensive contributor during the season (48 total points), but he now has a goal in each of the last two games, a huge presence for a team fighting to stay alive in the playoffs.
April 30, 2008
Patrick Marleau and his Sharks mates will look to start the long road back against the Stars in Game 4 on Wednesday night. The Sharks, down 3-0, will look to become just the third team in NHL history to overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a series, according to TSN.

Our View:Nothing is going right for the Sharks at this point and honestly, unless their stars start playing like stars, and the suddenly porous PK unit finds the groove that made it the best unit during the regular season, this series will likely end tonight.
April 30, 2008
Patrick Marleau scored the lone goal for San Jose in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Dallas in Game 3. That was his third goal of the playoffs, and his first in the series against Dallas, who San Jose trails 3-0.

Our View:He also contributed four assists and has seven points over 10 playoff games this season. He will continue to play hard until the Sharks play their final game, which is seemingly soon.
April 18, 2008
Patrick Marleau continues to lead the Sharks both on and off the ice, this according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "He's played unbelievable," Sharks Ryane Clowe said. "He's really motivated. You can tell he's hungry. He's not a real rah-rah, vocal guy. If something has to be said he'll say it. It doesn't really make a difference because you get inspired by his play on the ice."

Our View:People have questioned Marleau's heart for years, but after taking a pounding against the Flames in Game 3 when he continued to come back for more, the questions are slowly subsiding. Through five games in these playoffs he has two goals and four assists, in addition to the grit.
April 14, 2008
Patrick Marleau was beaten up in Game 3 for the Sharks as he took two big hits that led to a cut over his eye and a bloody nose, this according to the San Jose Mercury News. The Sharks were not happy with either hit, especially the second one. "I clearly thought it was an elbow right in the face," HC Ron Wilson said. "I was kind of surprised we ended up on the short end of the stick."

Our View:The Sharks failed to respond physically, again, on Sunday night as the Flames took it to them. However, Marleau deserves credit for bouncing back up as he didn't seem intimidated in the least not even missing a shift.
April 9, 2008
Patrick Marleau will skate on the Sharks second line with Joe Pavelski and recently returned Ryan Clowe, this according to the team's Official Website. Marleau has actually been playing LW with Pavelski at C, and the duo has been magical over the last month. Adding the rugged Clowe, recently back in the lineup after missing most of the year with knee surgery, could make this a formidable line.
April 2, 2008
Patrick Marleau notched one goal and one assist in Tuesday night's 5-2 win over the Kings. He has racked up five points over his last five games, and has scored 45 for the season.
March 9, 2008
Patrick Marleau scored the game winning goal for the Sharks as they locked down their ninth straight win, a franchise record. Marleau has now scored a goal in four straight games.
March 6, 2008
Patrick Marleau scored two goals on Wednesday night including his first game winner of the season for the Sharks. Marleau may have only 13 goals and 35 points on the year, a terribly disappointing season to date, but he has certainly picked up his play of late with three goals and three assists in his last five games for the surging Sharks.
February 18, 2008
Patrick Marleau, who has missed the team's last three games, was placed on injured reserve Monday, according to TSN.ca. Marleau has been suffering from a groin injury. The 28-year-old center has 10 goals and 18 assists in 55 games this season.
February 17, 2008
Patrick Marleau missed his third straight game due to an injured groin, but he is traveling with the team and did take part in the team's gameday skate around signaling that a return to the lineup is close. Marleau has been awful this year with only 10 goals and 28 points in 55 games, so hopefully his time off will allow him to clear his head and return with the old fire that he used to average 33 goals and 82 points the past two seasons.
February 15, 2008
Patrick Marleau was inactive for the second straight game Thursday night vs. Edmonton with a groin injury. The San Jose captain has little fantasy value even when healthy.
February 14, 2008
Patrick Marleau didn't skate Wednesday because of his groin injury and is doubtful for tonight's game against the Oilers, according to the San Jose Mercury News. Marleau missed his first game of the season Tuesday. He's been a major disappointment this year with just 28 points in 55 games.
February 10, 2008
Patrick Marleau injured his groin in the first period of the Sharks game on Saturday night and he did not return in the victory. No word yet on the severity of injury, but rest assured we will be on top of it to find out the prognosis of the Sharks captain. NHL.com
