John Madden scored twice in New Jersey's 5-0 win over Dallas on Wednesday.

Our View:He had just one point on the season entering the game but should increase his production going forward. He is a reliable No. 2 center in fantasy leagues and he's playing for a contract this season.

John Madden will become an unrestricted free agent following the 2008-09 season, but the team has still not yet offered a contract extension, according to the New York Post.

Our View:Madden is currently the ninth highest paid Devil at $2.9 million in the final year of a 5-year deal. After Martin Broduer, he was probably the team's most valuable performer last season playing his normal fantastic defense while scoring 20-goals for the second time in his career. With a season best total of 43 points (last year), he has limited fantasy value though his on ice impact is significant.

John Madden was nominated for the Selke Trophy awarded to the forward "who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game," according to NHL.com.

Our View:Madden has a long history of being one of the most defensively responsible forwards in the league, a reputation earned on the strength of capturing this award in 2000-01 and finishing runner up in 2002-03 and 2003-04. He also chipped in 20 goals this season for the second time in his career.

John Madden has been playing great in the post-season as he notably scored the game-winning OT goal against the Rangers on Sunday, and has earned more ice time and gained praise from Brent Sutter, according to the Newark Star Ledger. Sutter is very high on Madden right now and commented, "You try to play your top players on the power play, your most skilled guys who contribute maybe the most offensively on it. Sometimes you change things just to shake things up a little bit, but John's one of those guys that, since Day One, has played extremely well for this team. He's done everything that I've asked of a player to do. He's had a great year to date and he'll continue to play well, because he plays for the front of that jersey. That jersey means everything to him. He's a fiery guy. He's got the intensity and the intangibles that make up a winner. And his character showed Sunday night."

Our View:Madden only scored 42 points in the regular season, but contributed three goals over their four playoff games against the Rangers so far. His fantasy stock remains on the rise in the postseason.

It wasn't pretty, but John Madden will take it. The Devils center netted the game-winning overtime goal against the Rangers on Sunday and helped his club climb back into the series. "I’m not going to lie. It was a lot of luck," Madden admits to the AP. His shot went off the foot of defenseman Marc Staal.

Our View:Madden scored a career-high 43 points this season and added a goal in Game 2. Still, he doesn't very much fantasy value.

John Madden scored the Devils' lone goal in Friday's 2-1 loss to the Rangers. That was his first goal since March 15.

Our View:He recovered nicely from his lacerated ankle injury from earlier in the year.
January 20, 2008
John Madden believes he'll be able to return to the lineup for Sunday's game, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. Madden's recovering from a lacerated ankle but was fortunate the cut didn't cause any serious damage.

John Madden was unable to play in Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to the Islanders. The AP reports that he was nursing a lacerated ankle. Madden had not missed a game since 1999.

Our View:Details are sketchy regarding the severity of the injury, but the team did call up a minor league replacement. In other words, there's a good chance he'll miss additional playing time.

It appears that John Madden avoided a serious injury when he was cut just above his ankle by a skate during Saturday's game. "I saw the doctors and the tests they did went well. They came to the conclusion that there is no damage to the tendons. No MRI was necessary," Madden said, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. "I'm hoping when I get up in the morning, everything will be okay. It's wait-and-see right now." Doctors will keep an eye on the gash to make sure it doesn't get infected, but it appears he could play on Wednesday.

John Madden was cut by a skate just above his right ankle late in Saturday's game. "Right now the prognosis is good," Madden said, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. "I don't think it got any major tendons. That was my main concern. We'll see when I get an MRI tomorrow." Obviously, if the MRI reveals anything serious, Madden could be out for an extended stretch.
