Newsbreakers
December 2, 2008
Steve Downie scored his first goal of the season against the Flyers, who traded him earlier in the year, but the Lighting fell to the Flyers 4-3 in overtime.

Our View:The point was Downie's first of the year which is why he has no fantasy value.
November 7, 2008
Steve Downie was traded on Friday to Tampa Bay along with Steve Eminger for Matt Carle, according to the Associated Press. The teams also exchanged draft choices, with Tampa getting their own fourth-round pick back in the 2009 draft which they traded to the Flyers last June, and the Flyers will get Tampa's third-round pick in next year's draft.

Our View:This move also might make room for free agent forward Brendan Shanahan, who the Flyers have been rumored to have interest in.
November 3, 2008
The Philadelphia Flyers on Monday assigned second-year right wing Steve Downie to the team’s American Hockey League affiliate.

Our View:Downie did not record a point in six games for the Flyers this season, but the 21-year-old did notch a goal, five assists and seven penalty minutes in three contests with the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL after his demotion.
October 30, 2008
Steve Downie will likely get the call-up to play for the Flyers on Thursday after Darroll Powe suffered a concussion, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:Downie was a first-round pick who has talent, but little to show for it so far. He played four games for the Flyers this year but has no points. His fantasy value is nil.
October 20, 2008
The Flyers have sent forward Steve Downie and center Jared Ross down to the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.

Our View:Downie has been dealing with a knee injury and has yet to live up to his first-round billing. The 21-year-old winger will find more ice time (and hopefully find his form) in the AHL. He has no fantasy value.
October 12, 2008
Steve Downie missed Saturday night's opener against the Rangers due to a strained left knee, but is expected to return Monday against Montreal, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View:Downie is the Flyers' fourth-line center, and holds little fantasy value in standard leagues.
October 11, 2008
Center Steve Downie will miss Saturday's season opener against the Rangers due to an injured left knee, HockeyBuzz.com confirms. Jared Ross will take his spot.

Our View:Downie isn't much of a fantasy player at this point in his young career, but we have some long-term hopes. He is day-to-day with this injury.
October 10, 2008
Flyers center Steve Downie skated with the team on Thursday, and they are hopeful he will be able to play on Saturday, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:Downie has been suffering from a strained MCL. The injury occurred in a preseason game last week. He has high upside as the team's former first-round pick, but fantasy owners should wait until he is healthy and has proven himself before taking a chance on him.
October 2, 2008
It has been revealed that Steve Downie suffered a mild strain of his MCL in Wednesday’s 2-1 preseason victory over Washington, according to the AP.

Our View:The Flyers are uncertain if the 21-year-old would be on the ice for the regular-season opener on October 11 against the Rangers. The former first-round pick (2005) was being counted on to play a larger role this season.
October 1, 2008
The AP reports that right wing Steve Downie left Wednesday’s preseason game against the Washington Capitals in the second period following a fight with Jay Beagle. The 21-year-old Downie injured his left leg after falling to the ice. His return is questionable.

Our View:The 2005 first round pick appeared in just 32 games a season ago and recorded 12 points. The Flyers are hoping he can become a bigger contributor this season.
July 21, 2008
Steve Downie was benched after making two crucial turnovers (that led to goals) in consecutive games of the Eastern Conference Finals last May, but is looking forward to a fresh start next season, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Downie said, "I haven't thought the turnovers at all. You don't want to keep negativity in your head."

Our View:He only scored six goals last season, but the team likes his toughness, as he also racked up 73 penalty minutes. His production should go up next season and he could be worthy of a late-round pick, especially in leagues that award points for penalty minutes.
May 11, 2008
The Flyers may turn to Steve Downie to help against the Penguins in Game 2, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The forward has appeared in only four of the 13 playoff games thus far.

Our View:Hey, if the Penguins can win with 20 and 21-year-old kids flying around, why can't the Flyers? Okay, so maybe Downie doesn't strike as much fear in opponents as Malkin and Crosby.
February 18, 2008
Steve Downie, who suffered a concussion on Sunday against the Canadiens, is listed as day-to-day, according to Philly.com. Fantasy owners should reserve him until he's cleared to play.
