Newsbreakers
December 3, 2008
Jordan Staal scored his eight goal of the year on Wednesday against the Rangers.

Our View:This was Staal's first point in six games, so perhaps he can get going again with this igniting him a bit.
November 15, 2008
Jordan Staal scored two goals to bring the Penguins back for a 5-2 win over the Sabres, with Pittsburgh scoring four goals in the third period.

Our View:Staal now has seven goals this season and is a legitimate fantasy player, even if it's in more of a bench role.
November 11, 2008
Jordan Staal recorded his second career hat trick and added an assist in the Penguins' 7-6 OT win over the Red Wings Tuesday.

Our View:Staal came through when the Penguins needed him most, as all three goals came in the third period and his assist came in overtime.
October 21, 2008
Jordan Staal still has not been extended, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Staal can become a restricted free agent at the end of the current season.

Our View:After the Penguins couldn't resign Marian Hossa, signing Staal is a must to keep Pittsburgh as an offensive force. Now that they've moved Malkin back to the top line and have Staal at his natural position of center on the second line, the Penguins can really gauge how much he's worth.
October 3, 2008
Jordan Staal appears likely to take over the spot of departed winger Ryan Malone on the Penguins top power-play alongside Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "It's a big opportunity for (me). I want to take advantage of it."

Our View:That's the understatement of the year. If Staal can flash his offensive talents, he is in line for one whopper of a season. Already slated to skate on a line with Malkin at even strength, if he spends any time on the first power-play unit his odds of scoring 30-goals for the first time seem very favorable (he scored 29 as a rookie).
September 22, 2008
Jordan Staal would like to remain in Pittsburgh long-term but he would also like to play on one of the team's top two scoring lines and not be relegated to third line duty, according to Beaver County Times.

Our View:The club will try Staal out this preseason on the left wing playing with Evgeni Malkin in the spot that was vacated when Ryan Malone left town. Scouts doubt Staal has the skills to skate with Malkin, but his big body and drive the net presence could still work. Staal is looking for a big money deal and he realizes the only way that happens is if he scores and not if he plays a defensive role.
September 17, 2008
Jordan Staal may not center the team's third line this season. Instead he may get the prime role of playing the left wing on one of the team's top-2 scoring lines, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View:Talk about a boon. If Staal skates with either Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin on one of the top-2 lines his fantasy value goes from middling to strong. Staal scored 29 goals as a rookie but was asked to play a more defensive role last season resulting in just 12 tallies. Keep an eye on where he ends up as it will drastically alter his outlook.
May 15, 2008
Jordan Staal scored two goals for the Penguins in their 4-2 loss to the Flyers in Game 4.

Our View:Stall has five goals and a single assist for the Penguins in these playoffs as he has focused more on his defensive responsibilities than on putting the puck in the back of the net.
May 13, 2008
Jordan Staal is expected to play in tonight's Game 3 against the Flyers, according to SlamSports.com. The center will then travel to Thunder Bay, Ontario, on Wednesday morning to attend his grandmother's funeral. Staal will then fly back to Philadelphia on Wednesday night. As previously reported, his brother Eric will also attend the funeral.

Our View:Staal has three goals and one assist in 11 playoff games, and provides solid depth to the Penguins.
May 11, 2008
Jordan Staal added an empty-net goal in the final minute as Pittsburgh came back to win after twice squandering one-goal leads. The Pens lead the best-of-7 series 2-0 over the Flyers.

Our View:Staal joined Sidney Crsoby and Marian Hossa who also scored in the win.
April 27, 2008
Pittsburgh center Jordan Staal scored one of two goals the Pens put forth in defeating the New York Rangers 2-0 in the Eastern Conference semifinals today, making good on the assists from Evgeni Malkin and Ryan Whitney.

Our View:Staal now has one point in three of his last four playoff games, a strong showing for a 19-year-old just cutting his teeth in the NHL.
April 25, 2008
Jordan Staal will get the chance to suit up against the Rangers in the second round of the playoffs with the added bonus of being able to play against his brother Marc, according to the AP. “It’s your brother,” Jordan said. “You want to end his season, you don’t want him to end yours. It’s going to be a battle, but we’re still going to be brothers afterward.

Our View:Neither player figures to be much of a force from a points perspective, though Staal, Jordan that is, could always surprise with a nice offensive showing.
April 14, 2008
Jordan Staal continues to fill the number three center position on the Penguins behind Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, and his teammates respect the work he does, this according to Sportsnet. "He does a lot of great things for us," Crosby said of Staal. "He's offensively gifted but I think sometimes his defensive play gets overlooked."

Our View:Staal, centering a line with Tyler Kennedy and Jarkko Ruutu, has failed to score a point in two playoff games, but after a season of just 12 goals and 28 points, that's not overly surprising for Staal who is forced to play a defensive game.
March 5, 2008
Jordan Staal practiced on Wednesday and believes he will be able to suit up for the Penguins contest on Thursday night, this according to the AP. Staal injured his ribs on Tuesday night. Staal has been a major fantasy disappointment in his second season as he has just nine goals and 23 points a year after he scored 29 goals and 42 points.
March 4, 2008
Jordan Staal was knocked out of Tuesday's contest with bruised ribs, according to SportsTicker. He's considered to be doubtful to return to action tonight, and we'll have more information on his status as it comes in.
