X-rays on Schneider's finger come back negative Saturday 6/21, 11:51 PM CT
X-rays on Brian Schneider's injured left pinkie finger came back negative, according to MLB.com. The Mets are listing him as day-to-day. The injury occurred on the same finger that kept Schneider out of action for nearly two weeks in April, when he suffered an infection.

Our View: This is good news for the Mets... we guess.
Sanches sent downSaturday 6/21, 11:24 PM CT
The Nationals optioned Brian Sanches to Triple-A Columbus Saturday. Sanches held a 7.36 ERA in 12 games.

Our View: The Nats bullpen has been worked to death lately, so they just need to bring another fresh arm in. Sanches gave up four runs in just a 1/3 of an inning Saturday.
Moch optioned after lossSaturday 6/21, 11:19 PM CT
The Nationals optioned Garrett Mock to Triple-A Columbus Saturday. Mock received the loss in Saturday's game.

The Nationals recalled Steven Shell from Triple-A Columbus Saturday. Shell posted a 2.62 ERA and 8.3 K/9 rate in 22 games (four starts) at Columbus.

Our View: Shell will be making his major league debut in Washington, where he'll serve in middle relief.
Orr summoned from Triple-ASaturday 6/21, 11:10 PM CT
The Nationals recalled Pete Orr from Triple-A Columbus Saturday. He was hitting .267 with two homers and 15 steals with Columbus.

Our View: Orr will serve as a backup all over the infield. His fantasy value is minimal.

Huston Street blew a save for the second straight night Saturday, allowing a bases-clearing double to Dan Uggla in a 6-4 loss.

Our View: Street's ERA now sits at 4.32, and he has just one save this month.
Valverde unavailable SaturdaySaturday 6/21, 10:57 PM CT
Jose Valverde was unavailable for Saturday's save chance because he had either pitched or warmed up the previous four nights, according to the AP. As it happened, Doug Brocail got the save opportunity and promptly blew the game.

Our View: Jose has struggled this month, but don't worry. His job is secure.

Brian Schneider injured the pinkie finger on his left hand in the first inning of Saturday's game when he was hit by a foul ball. He was taken to a Denver hospital after the game for X-rays, according to the NY Post.

Lo Duca gets start behind the plateSaturday 6/21, 10:44 PM CT
Paul Lo Duca started at catcher Saturday for the first time since returning from the DL. He had a single in four at-bats.

Our View: Lo Duca had made one start at first and one in the DH spot. Jesus Flores is the team's starting catcher now, and you can bet the Nats will do everything they can to deal Lo Duca at the deadline.

The good Ubaldo Jimenez showed up Saturday. The right-hander allowed one run on two hits and four walks with two strikeouts over eight innings while picking up his second win of the season.

Our View: You never know what you're going to get from Jimenez. He does hold a 2.90 ERA in five starts this month, so perhaps you should ride the wave now while he's hot.

Pedro Martinez was rocked for six runs on nine hits and a walk over 4 1/3 innings Saturday.

Our View: Pedro was good his last time out, but overall he holds a 5.91 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in four starts since returning from the DL.
Amezega exits with groin injurySaturday 6/21, 10:18 PM CT
Alfredo Amezaga exited Saturday's game in the fourth inning because of tightness in his left groin. He was replaced by Robert Andino.

Our View: Amezega isn't running much this year (though he had a steal tonight before exiting), rendering him useless fantasy-wise. A groin ailment isn't likely to cause him to burn up the basepaths.
Castillo gets start at secondSaturday 6/21, 10:15 PM CT
Jose Castillo made his first start of the season at second base Saturday. Ray Durham, the regular second baseman, is nursing a sprained ankle and was used in the DH slot, according to the AP.

Our View: Castillo is already eligible in nearly every league at second because of how many times he played there last year, so this news doesn't affect many.
Byrnes on track to return MondaySaturday 6/21, 10:05 PM CT
Eric Byrnes remains on track to return from the DL on Monday, according to the AP. He is coming back from injury to both hamstrings.

Our View: Byrnes is currently on a rehab assignment at Single-A Visalia. Assuming all goes well there, you should be able to stick him back in your lineup next week.
Reynolds leaves with ankle injurySaturday 6/21, 10:03 PM CT
Mark Reynolds had to leave Saturday's game in the seventh inning after he rolled his right ankle on a groundout to third, according to SportsTicker. Augie Ojeda replaced him in the field.

Our View: Reynolds didn't even attempt to run to first, so he must have sprained it pretty good. We'll update you on his status when more is known.
Young throws bullpen sessionSaturday 6/21, 9:55 PM CT
Chris Young threw a bullpen session Saturday, his first action since his nose was fractured by a line drive. Young is scheduled to have surgery to repair his septum on June 30. He said it's possible he will be back before the break, but it's tough to say. "It would be hard for me to say. Hopefully there won't be any complications from surgery in any respect," Young said on MLB.com. "I think it is a pretty easy procedure from what I understand. In the meantime, in the next nine days, I'll try to get my body in the best possible shape."

Our View: This is not a normal injury, so there isn't much of a track record as far as how long it normally takes players to return. We'll continue to keep tabs on the lanky righty.
McClung stays hot in JuneSaturday 6/21, 9:00 PM CT
Seth McClung held the Orioles to two runs on three hits and five walks while striking out six over 6 2/3 innings Saturday.

Our View: McClung quietly has a 2.55 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in his four starts this month. Aside from his May 29 disaster against the Braves, he has been terrific since moving into the rotation.
Sabathia dominates but gets no-decisionSaturday 6/21, 8:16 PM CT
C.C. Sabathia didn't get a win Saturday, but he certainly put his best foot forward. The big lefty allowed just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out 10 over seven innings. He also hit a solo homer for the Tribe's lone run before they exploded for six runs in the 12th.

Our View: C.C has been dynamite since late April. Will he be wearing an Indians uniform at the end of the year? Only time will tell.

Jose Valentin has decided to take the rest of the season off due to elbow and neck injuries, but his career isn't over. The 38-year-old has said he wants to play next season, according to MLB.com.

Slumping Utley given a night offSaturday 6/21, 7:08 PM CT
In the midst of a 0-for-23 skid, Chase Utley was rested on Saturday. "He gave me a no-like look," manager Charlie Manuel said on MLB.com. "Chase doesn't ever want to come out of the lineup. I decided to rest him tonight."

Our View: That Utley still has a .291-22-63 line on the year shows you what kind of start he was off to before this recent cold spell. Don't worry about him. He'll bounce back.
Glavine hoping he doesn't need surgerySaturday 6/21, 6:58 PM CT
Tom Glavine is hoping 4-6 weeks will be enough for his left elbow to heal on its own, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. If that time proves to be insufficient, the 42-year-old could face surgery. "It's not the kind of thing they've given me any guarantees on," said Glavine. The veteran could end up retiring instead of getting cut. "You want [your career] to end on top of your game," Glavine said. "Sometimes your body tells you it's time to go home. If this is the case, much like John [Smoltz] has said, then who am I to complain? I'm lucky I've gotten to this point in my career without going on the DL. I guess time catches up with you sooner or later."

Our View: Glavine is holding out hope that he can return this year. If he does have an operation, he said he'd consider returning to the Braves next season if they want him back.
Johnson to visit Mayo ClinicSaturday 6/21, 6:44 PM CT
Nick Johnson will pay a visit to the Mayo Clinic on Monday to figure out why his injured wrist is taking so long to heal, according to the AP. He has been on the DL since May 15 because of a torn tendon in his right wrist. "He still has soreness. We're going to get another opinion to make sure there's nothing else we can do at this point," GM Jim Bowden said. "It's discouraging that he's not any better after all this time."

Our View: Johnson is no longer in a cast, but the wrist hasn't healed as hoped. We'll let you know how his visit goes.
Hampton makes rehab startSaturday 6/21, 6:35 PM CT
Mike Hampton, recovering from a strained left pectoral, made his first rehab start on Saturday with the Single-A Gulf Coast, allowing one hit while striking out two in three innings. He threw 30 pitches in the outing and reported no discomfort afterward, according to MLB.com. "I'm very pleased," GM Frank Wren said. "He's happy and there was no pain. He feels very good going through this process."

Our View: Hampton will make another rehab start for Gulf Coast on Wednesday and will need at least four more rehab starts before joining the Braves rotation. He hopes to be back around the All-Star break, but we'll believe it only when the lefty physically toes a major league rubber.
Glaus' slam propels Cards to winSaturday 6/21, 6:21 PM CT
Troy Glaus ripped a grand slam and added a single in Saturday's 9-3 win over Boston. Glaus has really heated up in June, with a .275-7-14 line in 19 games.

Torres to retain closer roleSaturday 6/21, 5:53 PM CT
Eric Gagne is expected to return to the Brewers bullpen next weekend, but it won't be in the closer role. Manager Ned Yost told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that Salomon Torres will keep his gig.

Our View: Torres is a perfect 9-for-9 in save chances since assuming the ninth inning duties. If he should happen to still be on your waiver wire, snatch him up.
Gagne to start rehab TuesdaySaturday 6/21, 5:49 PM CT
Eric Gagne passed his final test today be throwing a live BP session Saturday will report to Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday for a minor league rehab assignment, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He will pitch for Nashville on Tuesday and Thursday before rejoining the Brewers next weekend in Minnesota.

Our View: Gagne will not return to the closer role, as that gig will continue to be held by Salomon Torres.
Iribarren to be sent back downSaturday 6/21, 5:45 PM CT
Hernan Iribarren will be optioned to Triple-A Nashville Sunday when Rickie Weeks returns from the DL, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View: Tomko will probably get a minor-league deal somewhere, but he can be ignored for fantasy purposes.
Reds could rush shortstops backSaturday 6/21, 5:37 PM CT
Manager Dusty Baker said the rash of injuries at shortstop for the Reds could force the club to reexamine the timetable for players who are close to returning from the DL. "We've got to check and see how they're doing—how they're really doing," Baker said in the AP. "There's how the player says he's feeling and doing and how those down there that are watching him say how he's doing." Jolbert Cabrera, who recalled earlier this month, became the fourth shortstop to be placed on the DL Saturday.

Our View: Keppinger was originally thought to be at least a week away, but it sounds like he could be back earlier than that now.
Ridgway sent downSaturday 6/21, 5:26 PM CT
The Braves optioned Jeff Ridgway to Triple-A Richmond Saturday. Brent Lillibrige was recalled to replace him on the roster.

Our View: Manager Bobby Cox didn't want to send Ridgway down, but injuries on the infield necessitated a move.
Lillibridge summoned from RichmondSaturday 6/21, 5:24 PM CT
The Braves recalled Brent Lillibridge from Triple-A Richmond Saturday. Reliever Jeff Ridgway was sent down.

Our View: With both Chipper Jones and Yunel Escobar banged up, the Braves needed some depth on the infield. Lillibridge is a pretty good prospect but has been disappointing this year, hitting only .207 with one homer at Richmond.
Stavinoha expected to be recalledSaturday 6/21, 5:15 PM CT
With Albert Pujols already out of the lineup and Yadier Molina and Cesar dealing with injuries, the Cardinals are likely to call up outfielder Nick Stavinoha before Sunday's game, according to MLB.com. Stavinoha is batting .346 with 10 homers and 50 RBI at Triple-A Memphis.

Our View: Stavinoha could be used as a DH in AL parks over the next few series. He has yet to appear in the majors.
Cards still awating news on IzturisSaturday 6/21, 5:08 PM CT
The Cardinals are still waiting on news regarding Cesar Izturis and his injured hamstring. Izturis met with Cardinals' head team physician George Paletta at the team hotel on Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The Cardinals are already basically playing a man short with Yadier Molina's injury, so if Cesar's injury is serious at all, look for him to be placed on the DL.
Pujols could be activated when eligibleSaturday 6/21, 5:05 PM CT
Albert Pujols will join the team for workouts beginning Tuesday, and it's possible he could be activated from the DL when he's eligible on Thursday, according to MLB.com. "I think he's feeling really good," manager Tony La Russa said. Pujols is on the DL with a strained left calf.

Our View: If he isn't activated on Thursday, Albert will almost certainly be back in the lineup next weekend in KC.
Molina not cleared to playSaturday 6/21, 5:03 PM CT
Yadier Molina was held out of the lineup Saturday due to a regression in his performance on the imPACT concussion screening exam, according to MLB.com. Molina started at DH on Friday and hit a home run, and even though he said he did not feel any different on Saturday than he did on Friday, he was not clear due to the screening results. "He didn't score as well today as he did last night," manager Tony La Russa said. "It could have been the stress of playing. We figured we were best just to give him the whole day off."

Our View: The Cards don't want to take any chances on Yadi. He could possibly start at DH again Sunday, but don't expect him to be behind the plate for another few days.
Not necessarily a platoon at third, Torre saysSaturday 6/21, 4:56 PM CT
Andy LaRoche got his second straight start at third base against a left-hander Saturday. However, manager Joe Torre doesn't want to say there is a strict platoon between LaRoche and Blake DeWitt. "I don't want to say it's a platoon [at third base], because there may be a game where I think Loney has trouble with this particular left-hander, I'll put LaRoche over there and DeWitt'll play," Torre said on MLB.com. "I'm not afraid to have DeWitt hit against left-handers, but his numbers lately against left-handers haven't been as good as the overall number."

Our View: LaRoche is just 1-for-13 so far at the plate this year (including today's at-bats), so he'll have to pick it up at the plate if he wants to continue getting at least semi-regular playing time.
Kuroda on track for next SaturdaySaturday 6/21, 4:36 PM CT
Hiroki Kuroda did not play catch Saturday as originally scheduled. However, he plans to have a bullpen session Tuesday and is believed to still be on schedule to be activated to start next Saturday, according to MLB.com. He was placed on the DL on Thursday with right shoulder tendinitis.

"My slider felt back to normal. I was getting out over it. Felt great." Wellemeyer has missed two of his last three starts with elbow stiffness.

Our View: Manager Tony La Russa said that if Wellemeyer doesn't start in Detroit Thursday that he'll certainly be slotted in next weekend in KC.

He left the game with a no-decision as the game was tied at zero until the Reds scored four runs in the seventh inning.

Marquis claims sixth win Saturday 6/21, 3:16 PM CT
Jason Marquis surrendered five earned runs on eight hits over seven innings in Saturday's exciting 11-7 victory over the cross-town rival White Sox, with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View: Marquis gave up a pair of two-run homers in the game and it wasn't a strong outing, but the Cubs provided enough run support for him to win.
Edmonds returned to lineup Saturday 6/21, 2:07 PM CT
Jim Edmonds, who had been slowed by soreness in his left foot, returned to the Cubs' starting lineup today in center field, according to MLB.com.

Our View: He bounced back with a vengeance Saturday, as he hit two home runs in the same inning against the White Sox at Wrigley Field, and became the third member of the Cubs to accomplish the feat.
Ward could return from DL next weekSaturday 6/21, 1:54 PM CT
Daryle Ward, who is recovering from a bulging disc in his lower back, could be activated from the DL sometime next week, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Ward will join Triple-A Iowa today (Saturday) and play a few games in hopes of being activated for the Cubs' final inter-league series against the White Sox, that begins June 27 at US Cellular Field. Ward provides the Cubs with a solid bat off the bench, and the team would like to use him as the DH against the Sox, giving him a little fantasy value.

Mike Hampton will throw a second simulated game at the Braves' complex in Orlando, Florida on Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: If Hampton feels no pain in his strained left pectoral muscle, Hampton could begin a Minor League rehab assignment next week. He hasn't appeared in the majors since 2005.

Jair Jurrjens will be targeting his eighth win of the season tonight when the Braves host the Mariners, according to MLB.com. He is 7-3 over 14 starts, with a 3.43 ERA and passable 1.43 WHIP.

Our View: Jurrjens is coming off a strong outing as he threw 7.2 scoreless innings against the Rockies (on June 16), with seven strikeouts, and should be in your fantasy rotation against the American League's worst team.
Park set for spot start Saturday 6/21, 1:32 PM CT
As expected, Chan Ho Park is leaving the bullpen to make a spot start in the rotation in place of the injured Hiroki Kuroda today, when the Dodgers host the Indians in inter-league play, according to MLB.com. Manager Joe Torre said, "He'll take the ball and give us what he has. His experience is something that's certainly going to help him, but the fact that he hasn't started for a while, we'll have to keep an eye out."

Troncoso recalled from Vegas Saturday 6/21, 11:23 AM CT
As expected, Ramon Troncoso has been recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas, according to CBSsports.com.

He said, "It's better than it has been, but it's hard to say exactly where I stand until after the next throw." This will be his first session since experiencing elbow stiffness during his June 13 start against the Phillies.

Our View: Pitching coach Dave Duncan is hopeful for Wellemeyer to make a start against the Tigers (three-game series starts June 24), but conceded that a lot will depend on his next side session. Anything less than a clean throw will take him out of consideration and force the Cardinals to consider placing him on the DL retroactive to June 14.
Giles' MRI revealed adema Saturday 6/21, 10:30 AM CT
Brian Giles' MRI results revealed adema in his ailing left shoulder, but he was still in Friday's lineup against the Tigers, according to the North County Times.

Josh Bard's high ankle sprain is improving, but he is still believed to be about four weeks away from returning to the Padres, according to the North County Times.

Kouzmanoff should avoid DL Saturday 6/21, 10:18 AM CT
Kevin Kouzmanoff's MRI results revealed a irritated disk in his ailing back, but he is not expected to land on the DL, according to the North County Times. He said on Friday, "I feel a lot better today from Tuesday. I don't think I'm going to need two weeks to heal."

Chris Young is scheduled to undergo surgery on his fractured nose on June 30, according to the North County Times. Young said Friday he's excited by the idea of setting a clear time line for his return.

Rafael Furcal disagrees with Manager Joe Torre's statement that he doesn't know whether Furcal will be able to complete a rehab assignment in time to return to the Dodgers by the All-Star break, according to the LA Times. Furcal stated that the bulging disk in his back is about 90% healed, and is optimistic he could return before the All-Star break, which begins July 14.

Ryan Langerhans has been outrighted to Triple-A Columbus, according to the AP. The team recalled Garrett Mock to make a spot start on Saturday, and Langerhans was viewed as expendable to make room on the roster.

Willingham to be activated soon Saturday 6/21, 8:12 AM CT
The Marlins are set to activate star outfielder Josh Willingham from the DL on Tuesday, according to the Miami Herald. He is recovering from lower back soreness. Manager Fredi Gonzalez will work him back into the grind slowly, and said, "I'm not going to run him out there the first seven days in a row."

Our View: Willingham was hitting .341 with six homers and 16 RBI over 25 games prior to landing on the DL in late April, and should be penciled back into your lineups when he returns to the diamond.
Kershaw still winlessSaturday 6/21, 1:21 AM CT
Clayton Kershaw was pulled after 85 pitches and five innings on Friday night as he allowed four runs to the Indians in a no-decision.

Our View: Kershaw now owns a 4.34 ERA over six starts, but he continues to walk far too many batters to be successful (5.59 BB/9) as well as too many to allow him to go deep into games as they continue to drive up his pitch counts.
Maddux holds Tigers in checkSaturday 6/21, 1:14 AM CT
Greg Maddux needed just 85 pitches to make it through seven innings as he held the Tigers to just one run though it wasn't good enough to earn a decision.

Our View: Maddux is only 3-5 on the year despite a sterling 3.17 ERA and 1.19 WHIP proving that the master can still get major league hitters out with the best of them.
Harden has another solid outingSaturday 6/21, 1:11 AM CT
Rich Harden needed 98 pitches to make it through 5.2 innings, but in the end he held the Marlins to just one earned run in a no-decision.

Our View: Harden only walked two batters while striking out five, but with such an extensive injury history, the A's are doing their best to limit Harden to under 100 pitches per outing if possible.
Uggla goes deep, twiceSaturday 6/21, 1:06 AM CT
Dan Uggla blasted two home runs, his 22nd and 23rd of the season, on his way to four hits for the Marlins.

Our View: If not for the power exploits of Chase Utley, Uggla would be all the rage at second base with the massive numbers he is currently putting up.
Dukes lights it upSaturday 6/21, 12:38 AM CT
Elijah Dukes had a huge night on Friday as he went 5-for-6 with two runs and two RBI for the Nationals. Dukes also went deep for the second time this year while stealing two bases against the Rangers.

Our View: It's about time. Dukes has been a disappointment this season with merely two home runs in 122 AB, a sickly total for a guy who could bench press a a dugout. Over the past 10 games he has brought his average up from .195 to .270 as he has clearly found his stroke.
Campillo falls to MarinersSaturday 6/21, 12:21 AM CT
Jorge Campillo held the Mariners to four runs over 6.1 innings on Friday though it wasn't enough as he fell to 2-2 on the year.

Our View: Campillo permitted eight of the Mariners season-high 15 hits on the night in a decidedly lackluster effort after his solid outing last time out.
Escobar leaves game with injurySaturday 6/21, 12:19 AM CT
Yunel Escobar went 1-for-4 with a run scored on Friday night before being forced out of the game in the ninth inning with a strained hip flexor.

Our View: Esocbar is currently listed as day-to-day as we all are come Saturday. Omar Infante would figure to start on Saturday if Escobar can't go.
