Miller is shelled earlyTuesday 7/8, 11:58 PM CT
Andrew Miller was roughed up for four runs in the first inning by the punchless Padres on Tuesday. On the night, he lasted five innings, walked four, struck out five, and gave up six hits. He did not allow a run after the first.

Our View: Miller hasn't been able to figure it out in 2007. His ERA is 5.09 after 19 starts. Here's hoping it's just an adjustment period and not foreshadowing the rest of his promising career.
Evans recalled from Double-ATuesday 7/8, 11:44 PM CT
Nick Evans was recalled from Double-A Binghamton on Tuesdat. He will replace Ryan Church on the 25-man roster.

Our View: Evans will not figure to start ahead of the veterans and Moises Alou also appears to be coming back.
Sanchez could rejoin the Marlins this monthTuesday 7/8, 11:38 PM CT
After throwing 4.1 innings in Jupiter's 5-4 win, Sanchez said he's on track to rejoin the Marlins' rotation by July 28, according to the Palm Beach Post. He allowed two runs on four hits, throwing 49 of his 70 pitches for strikes. He struck out three and walked two. His velocity ranged from 88 to 93. Sanchez, whose rehab stint started last Thursday when he allowed two runs in five innings in a Gulf Coast League game, said he will start again for the Hammerheads on Sunday in Fort Myers. He said that will be followed by at least two starts for Class AA Carolina.

Our View: Sanchez is recovering rotator cuff surgery. His rehab was delayed sue to the tragic death of his son.
Braun hits his 22ndTuesday 7/8, 10:36 PM CT
Ryan Braun hit his 22nd HR of the year on Tuesday. It was a three-run blast in the first inning.

Our View: Braun has been steady this month and should continue to pace a devastating Brewers lineup in the second half.
Gagne continues to look betterTuesday 7/8, 10:34 PM CT
Eric Gagne made his third appearance on Tuesday since coming off the DL with shoulder tendinitis. He allowed just one hit in his only inning of work.

Our View: Gagne is 3-for-3 in successful bullpen appearances since his return.
Sabathia walks five; earns the WTuesday 7/8, 10:31 PM CT
CC Sabathia picked up the W in his first outing in a Brewers' uniform. He lasted six innings, striking out five, walking five and surrendering five hits to go with two earned runs.

Our View: Not a bad start for CC, but not dominant either. It was the most walks he had issued since April 16. Look for that number to calm down with his nerves in future starts.
Harang loses anotherTuesday 7/8, 10:24 PM CT
Aaron Harang picked up his 11th loss of the season on Tuesday against the Cubs. He gave up six runs in just 4.1 innings while walking seven batters.

Our View: This was just his first start of less than five innings since May 29, but he hasn't looked very good in between. He did manage to record six Ks in the brief outing.
Lincecum hit often in New YorkTuesday 7/8, 10:21 PM CT
In his first start since appearing on the Sports Illustrated cover, Lincecum gave up nine hits and two walks in six innings. He gave up four earned runs while striking out four.

Our View: Lincecum was pushed up in the rotation for this start and it did not pay off. This is probably just a bump in the road for the prodigy.
Soto goes yard against the RedsTuesday 7/8, 10:18 PM CT
Geovany Soto hit his 16th home run on the year and contributed three RBI in the Cubs' 7-3 victory over the Reds on Tuesday.

Our View: The rookie has shown no signs of slowing down and has cemented his All-Star status.
Bruce's struggles are getting worseTuesday 7/8, 10:16 PM CT
Jay Bruce was 0-for-4 with four whiffs Tuesday against Chicago.

Our View: Astonishingly, his batting average is nearly 200 points lower than it was a month ago when he was enjoying an incredible start to his major league career.
Dempster moves to 10-0 at WrigleyTuesday 7/8, 10:14 PM CT
Ryan Dempster became the first Cubs pitcher in 31 years to start a season 10-0 at home according to the AP. He allowed just one run on two hits to go with five strikeouts against the Reds on Tuesday.

Our View: Dempster's ERA is down to 3.13. He is 0-3 on the road with a 4.03 ERA.
Odalis is ejectedTuesday 7/8, 9:48 PM CT
The AP reports that Odalis Perez was ejected in the third inning for arguing the second balk called against him. After the call, he charged toward the umpire, and was quickly ejected. The left-hander had to be restrained by umpires and coaches, including manager Manny Acta.

Our View: In 2.2 innings Perez gave up an unearned run, walked four and was called for two balks. Perez has won only two of his 16 starts this season.
Webb wins his 13thTuesday 7/8, 9:45 PM CT
Brandon Webb threw six shutout innings on Tuesday against the lowly Washington Nationals. He scattered six hits and two walks while striking out six.

Our View: Webb had been looking sorta shaky, given his standards, and the Nats came along at just the right time.
Ramirez comes up big againTuesday 7/8, 9:36 PM CT
Manny Ramirez came up big again on Tuesday. He hit a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth to spark a rally that saw the Red Sox come out on top of a 6-5 decision over the Twins.

Our View: It was Ramirez's only hit of the night, but it appears he may have finally busted out of his slump.
Delgado continues good JulyTuesday 7/8, 9:19 PM CT
Carlos Delgado hit his 16th home run of the year on Tuesday off of Giants starter Tim Lincecum. He was 2-for-3 on the night.

Our View: Delgado is hitting .357 in seven July games. He appears to have rediscovered his swing along with most of the Mets.
Beltran has a big nightTuesday 7/8, 9:16 PM CT
Carlos Beltran put together another good game at the plate. He belted his 14th home run of the season on a 3-for-4 night. He added four RBI.

Our View: Fantasy owners are no doubt excited to see his offense pickup ever since having been threaten to bat second in the order.
Pelfrey wins his fifth straightTuesday 7/8, 9:13 PM CT
Mike Pelfrey outpitched Tim Lincecum and shutout the visiting Giants on Tuesday. He allowed three hits and no walks in seven innings of work.

Our View: It appears Pelfrey is the real deal after a disastrous May. He should continue to get good run support and is worth picking up if he is still available.
McClellan notches 19th holdTuesday 7/8, 8:53 PM CT
Kyle McClellan continues his impressive work in the Cardinals bullpen. He picked up his 19th hold of the season while shutting out the Phillies in the eighth inning on Tuesday night.

Our View: If your league is counting holds and McClellan is available, he has earned a roster spot in deep leagues and NL-only formats.
Hamels looks good in picking up the lossTuesday 7/8, 8:49 PM CT
Cole Hamels picked up his sixth loss of the year despite giving up just three hits in seven innings. Ryan Ludwick and Rick Ankiel both hit solo home runs off of him.

Our View: Otherwise, Hamels looked sharp. He recorded eight strikeouts and walked none. Despite the 9-6 record, there are not many better young lefties in the game.
Franklin still the closer in St. LouisTuesday 7/8, 8:46 PM CT
Ryan Franklin earned save number 12 on Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Our View: Despite a healthy Jason Isringhausen and some rough outings lately, it appears Tony La Russa will stay with Ryan Franklin in the closer's role...for now.
Ludwick is heating upTuesday 7/8, 8:42 PM CT
Ryan Ludwick hit his 18th home run of the season on Tuesday.

Our View: It was the All-Star's second in as many games and his third consecutive game with an RBI. He has not accomplished such a feat since May 19.
Ankiel hits his 19th HRTuesday 7/8, 8:39 PM CT
Rick Ankiel hit his 19th home run of the season on Tuesday, a solo shot of Phillies LHP Cole Hamels. It was just his fifth off a lefty this season and already his fourth of July.

Our View: Since being called up last August, Ankiel has 30 HR, 85 RBI, 81 R, and a .273 AVG. in just 124 games. Despite inconsistencies, the former pitcher is becoming a stud fantasy league outfielder.
Pineiro finally gets a winTuesday 7/8, 8:33 PM CT
Joel Pineiro recorded his first win since April 29th against the Phillies on Tuesday. He went 6.1 shoutout innings, allowing five hits and three walks. He struck out three.

Our View: Again, he didn't get much run support but he didn't need it. Anytime a starter shuts out the Phillies in Philly, it is impressive. With a number of Cardinal starters eyeing returns, look for the current rotation to step up its focus once again.
Zimmerman takes BPTuesday 7/8, 8:22 PM CT
The Washington Times reports that Ryan Zimmerman took batting practice on the field Tuesday for the first time since late May.

Our View: The good news is that Zim (who has a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder) was hitting the ball pretty solid, driving it to the gaps. The not-as-great news is that he didn't say he wasn't in any pain, only that his shoulder felt better than it did back before he went on the DL.
Oswalt completes mound session; ready to goTuesday 7/8, 8:19 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Roy Oswalt had a relatively successful mound session on Tuesday, as he tested his left hip one last time before making his Friday start.

Our View: "I was a little worried at first," Oswalt said. "I was probably throwing 70-80 percent when I first got out there. The last 20 pitches, I threw as hard as I could throw. I didn't feel anything. I wasn't as crisp as my last start, but hopefully it comes back Friday." If it were any other opponent besides Washington, we might caution you against using him, but he should be ok.
Alou eyeing a Friday returnTuesday 7/8, 8:15 PM CT
Alou told the Norwich (Conn.) Bulletin, "There's a pretty good chance I might be (playing for the Mets) Friday. There's a chance I may wait until after the All-Star break, but my goal is to be back in New York this weekend."

Our View: With Ryan Church headed to the DL, the Mets could certainly use him. However, given Alou's recent history, the brontosaurus has a better chance of returning from extinction than Moises does of lasting a month with the Mets.
Thatcher to replace TomkoTuesday 7/8, 7:56 PM CT
Joe Thatcher will take Brett Tomko's place in the Padres bullpen. This is the fourth time this season he has been called up.

Our View: Although he has been horrific in the majors (7.40 ERA, 2.03 WHIP) he has a 4-0 record and a 1.21 ERA with Portland this season.
Ambres starting on TuesdayTuesday 7/8, 7:54 PM CT
Chip Ambres was quickly recalled from Triple-A Portland and got the start in right field for Brian Giles on Tuesday night.

Our View: Ambres' playing time will depend on the health of Brian Giles' hamstring. The Padres are getting desperate for offense so the youngsters will see their share of action.
McAnulty sent to Triple-ATuesday 7/8, 7:51 PM CT
Paul McAnulty cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Portland.

Our View: McAnulty was even less anemic than the other Padres and likely won't be back up any time soon.
Guevara sent downTuesday 7/8, 7:49 PM CT
Carlos Guevara was sent to Triple-A Portland.

Our View: The Rule-5 pickup from Cincinnati has been mostly ineffective this season. The Reds waived his rights for cash or a player to be named later.
Carp could return by AugustTuesday 7/8, 7:47 PM CT
Pitching coach Dave Duncan and GM John Mozeliak both said that it is possible that Chris Carpenter could be back in the rotation by August 1.

Our View: This seems a bit rushed, but Carp has been progressing without setbacks in his recent rehab sessions. This would be a big boost to the Cards, but it remains to be seen what the former Cy Young winner will have to offer fantasy owners.
Tomko to the DLTuesday 7/8, 7:44 PM CT
Brett Tomko has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 1, with a right elbow strain.

Our View: If there is a way for Tomko to become less relevant than he already is in fantasy, this is it.
Gonzalez will not have surgeryTuesday 7/8, 6:55 PM CT
The AP reports that Edgar Gonzalez has decided against surgery and could rejoin the Diamondbacks in September.

Our View: The decision has little fantasy impact. Edgar is 1-3 with a 6.00 ERA in six starts this season.
Kotchman not in tonight's lineupTuesday 7/8, 6:45 PM CT
Casey Kotchman is not in tonight's starting lineup after playing 16 straight games.

Our View: The move is purely to get the first baseman a little rest and give Robb Quinlan some neccessary at-bats.
Byrnes likely out for the seasonTuesday 7/8, 6:40 PM CT
The Arizona Republic reports that Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin said he does not expect left fielder Eric Byrnes to return. He's been on the DL with a strained left hamstring since July 1.

Our View: Certainly not good news for fantasy owners. It appears safe to move on with plans not including Byrnes in your OF.
Gaudin to the CubsTuesday 7/8, 5:55 PM CT
Chad Gaudin was sent to the Chicago Cubs as part of the Rich Harden trade.

Our View: Gaudin started earlier this season but has pitched most of the year out of the bullpen to the tune of a 3.59 ERA. He threw 199 innings last year, going 11-13. He may see spot starts with the Cubs.
Harden lands with the CubsTuesday 7/8, 5:46 PM CT
Rich Harden has been traded to the Chicago Cubs for Matt Murton, Sean Gallagher, Eric Patterson and Josh Donaldson.

Our View: Harden has been dominant this year while posting a 2.34 ERA and 10.75 K/9 ratio in the AL. Now in the NL, he could see 10 or more wins in the second half, but that will be if he can remain healthy. His ERA could actually increase now that he's pitching in Wrigley.
Myrow back with the PadresTuesday 7/8, 5:24 PM CT
The Padres will recall Brian Myrow in hopes of igniting their putrid offense, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Myrow has a .324 batting average and 10 home runs and 53 RBIs in 87 games at Triple-A Portland. He will be given some at-bats but does not figure to have much of a fantasy impact.
Baker to miss a few startsTuesday 7/8, 4:59 PM CT
Jeff Baker underwent an MRI on Tuesday on his wrist.

Our View: X-Rays were negative but he is believed to sit out a few starts since Laynce Nix was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs. A trip to the DL is unlikely.
Pujols crushes in PhillyTuesday 7/8, 4:27 PM CT
In 50 games at Citizen's Bank Ballpark, Albert Pujols has hit .380, reached base at a .421 clip and slugged an even 1.000. He has a home run in every 5 ½ at-bats there, for a total of nine.

Our View: As usual, Pujols appears to be a pretty reliable play this week.
Tavarez joins the Braves bullpenTuesday 7/8, 4:23 PM CT
Julian Tavarez joined his third team of the season on Tuesday when he was signed by the Atlanta Braves.

Our View: Tavarez could see immediate action in Atlanta's banged up bullpen. He's struggled all season, posting a 7.20 ERA over a 20 inning span.
Dukes placed on the DLTuesday 7/8, 4:20 PM CT
Elijah Dukes was officially placed on the 15-day disabled list with a knee injury.

Our View: Dukes injured his knee on Saturday when he crashed into the left field wall while trying to catch a foul ball. He could be out of action for up to six weeks.
Church placed on the DLTuesday 7/8, 4:16 PM CT
According to Ed Coleman, during his appearance on WFAN, the Mets have placed OF Ryan Church on the 15-day disabled list due to consistent migraines.

Our View: Church was performing well since his return and was not expected to land on the DL. You just never know with concussions, though. Marlon Anderson and Fernando Tatis will be in line for playing time in the short term, but Moises Alou could be back shortly after the break.
Treanor on the DLTuesday 7/8, 4:14 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Matt Treanor has officially been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained lower abdomen.

Our View: John Baker, not Mike Rabelos, was brought up from Triple-A to get his first taste of major league action. Combined, the Marlins' catchers have 59 major league at-bats.
Romero battling groin injury Tuesday 7/8, 3:39 PM CT
J.C. Romero continues to battle his sore groin, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. Romero originally tweaked the muscle during an appearance in Atlanta on June 7, and the ailment continues to nag him, but not to a point where it has kept him from taking the mound. He said, "It's there, you know, but it's nothing where I can't really do my job. It's not going to keep me from pitching. But let's say I'm looking forward to four days off at the All-Star break. I'll tell you that much."

Our View: In his first 34 appearances of the season, he had allowed just four earned runs, but has surrendered five in his last eight appearances. He is not pitching well right now, but Charlie Manuel believes he is going to be alright, and doesn't seem to be headed to the DL.
Ozuna designated for assignment Tuesday 7/8, 1:51 PM CT
Pablo Ozuna has been designated for assignment by the Sox, according to the Sports Network. The team activated Paul Konerko from the DL, and Ozuna was viewed as expendable to make room on the roster.

Our View: Ozuna has provided a solid bat off the bench for Chicago, but did not play enough to hold any fantasy value.
Velez called up Tuesday 7/8, 12:52 PM CT
As expected, Eugenio Velez has been recalled from Triple-A Fresno, according to the Miami Herald. The team optioned Brian Horwitz as an adjoining move.

Our View: Velez made the team out of spring training, but struggled on defense (made three errors), baserunning (was caught stealing five times), and hitting, as he only batted .207 over 121 at-bats. He will hold little to no fantasy value during his stint with the team.
Reyes to begin program Tuesday Tuesday 7/8, 12:17 PM CT
Al Reyes, who is recovering from right shoulder tendinitis, will begin a throwing program Tuesday with Single-A Vero Beach, according to the Tampa Tribune. Reyes will pitch Tuesday and Thursday before making back-to-back appearances on the weekend.

Our View: If all goes favorably without a setback, he should be set to rejoin the team July 17, which is the final day of the All-Star break and a scheduled workout day for the Rays.
Alou update Tuesday 7/8, 11:22 AM CT
Moises Alou is expected to make one or two minor-league rehab assignments this week but most likely won't rejoin the Mets before the All-Star break, according to the NY Post.

Our View: He has been out since June 13 due to his strained left calf.
Church not headed for DL? Tuesday 7/8, 11:19 AM CT
The Mets still expect Ryan Church to return to the Mets' lineup this month, despite sending him home yesterday for further neurological tests by a second team doctor, according to the NY Post. GM Omar Minaya said Church isn't likely to go on the DL again because both the outfielder and the team feel Church's current dizziness is related to migraine headaches and not his two concussions this season.

Our View: Results of an MRI yesterday on Church's brain and neck were negative, and the Mets are listing him as day to day.
Smoltz transferred to 60-day DL Tuesday 7/8, 11:11 AM CT
John Smoltz has been transferred to the 60-day DL, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View: Smoltz is out for the season after undergoing shoulder surgery, and the transfer frees up a spot on the 40-man roster.
Myers solid in Triple-A outing Tuesday 7/8, 10:49 AM CT
Brett Myers was solid in his Triple-A outing on Monday, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. He allowed two earned runs over 7.1 innings with six strikeouts, and said, "I really felt good out there tonight. My location was a lot better than my last outing. I thought I threw the ball well and I threw 65 to 70 percent fastballs."

Our View: He plans to return to the Phillies after the All-Star break. He isn't worth waiting for as a fantasy hurler however, as he is 3-9 with a 5.84 ERA and 1.56 WHIP.
Moehler battling pink eye Tuesday 7/8, 10:12 AM CT
Brian Moehler was dealing with a case of pink eye on Monday, according to the Houston Chronicle. Moehler said, "I woke up with it Sunday, and my wife knew right away it was pink eye. My kids get it a lot. Everybody just has to wash their hands a lot."

Our View: It should not keep him out of action long, and he should not be in jeopardy of missing his next start.
Bourn sat out another game Tuesday 7/8, 10:07 AM CT
Michael Bourn did not start on Monday for the third time in four games, according to the Houston Chronicle. Darin Erstad took his place and manager Cecil Cooper said, "We'll go with the veteran Erstad, and we don't lose anything defensively. This guy is a Gold Glover, and he's ready to go every day."

Our View: Bourn is in a 0-for-19 slump, but Cooper noted that the change to Erstad isn't for the long term.
Giles missed another game Tuesday 7/8, 9:22 AM CT
Brian Giles missed his second-straight start on Monday due to his hamstring ailment, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View: The ailment has slowed him down for more than two weeks, and last played a full game Wednesday. He only has one extra base hit, a double, over his last eight games.
Carpenter throws sim. game Tuesday 7/8, 8:54 AM CT
Chris Carpenter threw a short simulated game Monday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. It was his second competitive appearance in such conditions since elbow tenderness slowed his return from surgery. Carpenter threw around 60 pitches at the Cardinals' training complex in Jupiter, Florida, and GM John Mozeliak stated that "his intensity was way up."

Our View: Carpenter will increase his pitch count toward 80 or 90 as he draws closer to a rehab assignment, which could be by the end of this month. He remains weeks away from a return to the Cardinals.
Wainwright update Tuesday 7/8, 8:50 AM CT
Adam Wainwright's ruptured ligament in his right middle finger has healed well enough to begin a throwing program this week, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Wainwright will start a light throwing program on Wednesday and could move on to more aggressive workouts when the team returns from the All-Star break.

Our View: When the team returns from the All-Star break for a workout a week from Wednesday, Wainwright hopes to begin long-tossing. This is an injury he could come back from, but still feel for up to a year.
Wilson not expected to be dealt Tuesday 7/8, 8:19 AM CT
There has been speculation swirling that several teams were interested in acquiring Jack Wilson, but the Pirates stated that they expect to keep the shortstop beyond the trade deadline, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: The Pirates realized exactly how valuable he was to the team, and how vulnerable they are at shortstop without him, as they gravely struggled at the position while he was on the DL. The team is considering retaining him for two more seasons.
Sanchez was benched again Tuesday 7/8, 8:11 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez rode the pine for the third time in five games on Monday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Luis Rivas took his place in the lineup.

Our View: Sanchez is only batting .186 since June 1, and should be placed on your bench as well until he proves to be effective again.
Pearce optioned Tuesday 7/8, 8:07 AM CT
Outfielder Steve Pearce has been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He was sent down to make room for Ian Snell, who returned from the DL to start tonight.

Our View: Pearce held no fantasy value, as he went 1-for-3 over a brief stint with the team.
Snell has simple plan Tuesday 7/8, 7:58 AM CT
Ian Snell, who will be making his first start tonight since June 22, has a simple plan, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He said, "Just let her rip. I feel great. A hundred percent. Better than I have all year. And I'm going to throw the ball like I know I can. The velocity's there. The break is there. I can't wait to get out there. My injury kept my velocity down, and it made me change my arm angles all the time. But not now. I'm ready to go."

Our View: Manager John Russell will be monitoring Snell closely once he reaches 70-80 pitches, but there is no set limit if he looks solid. Snell allowed 11 earned runs over his last two starts, and should not be considered for your lineup in his first game back.
Treanor could be headed for DL? Tuesday 7/8, 7:49 AM CT
Matt Treanor could be headed for the DL, according to FishStripes.com. He aggravated a nagging lower abdominal strain on Monday night, and he will undergo an MRI on Tuesday to determine the severity of the ailment. If the team is forced to shelve him, Mike Rabelo and John Baker at Triple-A Albuquerque would be top candidates to replace him.

Our View: Treanor is only hitting .240 for the season, but has been in a nice groove as of late, with three hits, one homer, and four RBI over his last three games.
Velez expected to be recalled Tuesday 7/8, 7:38 AM CT
Eugenio Velez is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Fresno today to replace the demoted Brian Horwitz, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: He made the team out of spring training, but struggled on defense (made three errors), baserunning (was caught stealing five times), and hitting, as he only batted .207 over 121 at-bats. He will hold little to no fantasy value in his next stint with the club.
Street earns 17th saveTuesday 7/8, 12:08 AM CT
Huston Street had to work for it, but the right-hander earned his 17th save of the season in a 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.

Our View: Houston continues to work on his large ERA which has now dropped to 3.79 in 35 appearances.
