Saito likely headed to DLSunday 7/13, 11:57 PM CT
The Los Angeles Times reports that closer Takashi Saito said Sunday he continued to feel the discomfort in his right elbow. Manager Joe Torre acknowledged that the Japanese import would spend time on the disabled list. "It hasn't really changed since yesterday," said Saito, who is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam today. Jonathan Broxton will be the Dodgers' closer in Saito's absence.

Our View: Matchups would dictate who pitches in the eighth innings of games the Dodgers are leading.
Moyer first after All Star breakSunday 7/13, 11:23 PM CT
According to the Phillies team website, Jamie Moyer will open the second half on the mound Friday night in Florida. Kyle Kendrick will follow on Saturday and Cole Hamels will round out the three games series against the Marlins.

Our View: The Phillies aren't sure who will pitch Tuesday and Wednesday against the Mets at Shea Stadium, though it's possible Adam Eaton will start the first game and Brett Myers will return on Wednesday.
Yost still undecided about rotationSunday 7/13, 10:59 PM CT
Brewers' Ned Yost has been trying to set his rotation for the second half, but he has yet to make any definitive decisions, this according to the team website. Yost has said the when the team acquired C.C. Sabathia that Seth McClung and Dave Bush would be the odd men out, which one will fill the final slot has yet to be determined. "I'm still thinking about it," Yost said. "I'm thinking seriously about matching up. You look at the numbers, and you want to put each of them [Bush and McClung] in a position where they can be successful." Ben Sheets , who will start Tuesday's All Star game will pitch either Saturday or Sunday.

Our View: Jeff Suppan, who is on the 15-day disabled list, threw a successful side session on Sunday. According to the report he felt great and will be activated to make his next outing.
Moehler replaces OswaltSunday 7/13, 10:46 PM CT
The Astros team website reports that right-hander Brian Moehler will receive the first start after the All Star break. "Obviously, we all want Roy starting that game, because he's the ace of the staff," Moehler said. "It's just unfortunate that he's injured right now." Moehler will be followed in the rotation by Wandy Rodriguez and Brandon Backe in a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs. After the series with the Cubs the rotation is a question mark. The fourth spot will likely go to Runelvys Hernandez, who would be called up from Triple-A Round Rock. Oswalt could be ready to start Tuesday, the fifth spot in the rotation after the break, but that won't be known until next weekend. "He won't do any throwing until after the break," manager Cecil Cooper said. "There's no need."

Our View: Cooper said that Moehler's season has been a success by every measurement. That's true to a degree, but after the fifth inning Moehler's peripherals are horrible making him a better option out of the bullpen.
Church plays catchSunday 7/13, 10:26 PM CT
Ryan Church (concussions) played catch before the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game against the Colorado Rockies and could be back soon after the All-Star break, manager Jerry Manuel told the AP.

Our View: At one point the team thought the season could be over for their right fielder. The way the Mets are clicking, adding Church to the 25-man roster will make the team that much better.
Redman rocked by MetsSunday 7/13, 10:21 PM CT
Mark Redman stay in the Rockies rotation is uncertain. The veteran left-hander was never in control of Sunday's 7-0 loss to the Mets. The big blow to Redman's start was a Carlos Beltran home run in the first inning that traveled an estimated 415 feet giving New York a 3-0 lead.

Our View: With Kip Wells and possibly Jason Hirsh expected to join the Roks rotation in the second half, Redman will be released or sent back to Triple-A.
Beltran hits three-run shotSunday 7/13, 10:12 PM CT
Carlos Beltran hit a three-run homer helping Mike Pelfrey and the New York Mets defeat the Colorado Rockies 7-0 Sunday night.

Our View: Beltran has been fabulous in July, and if he can continue his hot hitting and raise his .262 batting average he will again become one of the top-tiered fantasy options in the outfield.
Pelfrey helps Mets win ninth straightSunday 7/13, 9:54 PM CT
Mike Pelfrey was over-the-top good again leading the Mets to a 7-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday night. It was the Mets ninth win in a row leaving them just a half a game behind NL East leader Philadelphia.

Our View: Pelfrey tossed eight scoreless innings allowing six hits, walking none and striking out five.
Sanchez and Lincecum moneySunday 7/13, 9:15 PM CT
When Jonathan Sanchez and Tim Lincecum start for the Giants the team is 25 - 12. The rest of the rotation is 14 - 40.

Our View: Skipper Bruce Bochy plans to shuffle the rotation after the All-Star break with Matt Cain pitching Friday, Sanchez on Saturday and then Lincecum, the All Star, on Sunday. Barry Zito will pitch Monday and Kevin Correia on Tuesday.
Wolf suffers ninth lossSunday 7/13, 7:13 PM CT
Randy Wolf allowed six runs on six hits, walked three and struck out only one over five innings in Sunday's loss to the Braves.

Our View: Wolf, who is typically a terrific spot start at home in PETCO Park, didn't fool any of the Braves hitters on Sunday afternoon evident by his lack of strike outs.
Campillo earns win No. 4Sunday 7/13, 7:09 PM CT
Jorge Campillo went six strong helping the Braves head into the All Star break on a positive note. Campillo, who allowed two runs on five hits, exited the game after throwing only 84 pitches after fouling a pitch off his foot in his third at-bat.

Our View: The Mexican League refuge evened his record at 4-4, kept his ERA at 3.06 and continued what should be considered a stellar rookie season.
Hudson records career firstSunday 7/13, 7:04 PM CT
Tim Hudson made a relief appearance in the eighth inning of Sunday's 12-3 win over the Padres. The one inning of relief was the first of his nine-year career.

Our View: Hudson pitched a perfect eighth inning after making 301 straight career starts.
McCann extends on-base streakSunday 7/13, 7:02 PM CT
Brian McCann hit his 18th home run of the season and drove in three runs to help the Atlanta Braves beat the San Diego Padres 12-3 on Sunday afternoon. McCann leads all catchers with 18 home runs and 27 doubles. He has 53 RBI and is hitting .302.

Our View: McCann extended his on-base streak to eight straight. His 3-for-3 performance on Sunday included a plate appearance resulting in a walk and another where he was was hit by a pitch.
Nomar leads Dodgers to winSunday 7/13, 6:58 PM CT
Nomar Garciaparra went 2-for-3 with two RBI helping the Dodgers return to the win column with a 9-1 victory over the Florida Marlins on Sunday afternoon.

Our View: Garciappara, who hit leadoff for the first time in six years on Saturday, batted out of the cleanup spot on Sunday.
Miller registers only five outs in lossSunday 7/13, 6:55 PM CT
Andrew Miller recorded only five outs and lost his fourth straight decision on Sunday afternoon. The young left-hander allowed seven runs on five hits and issued a season-high five walks. It was the second-shortest outing in his 33 career starts.

Our View: Miller continues to be extremely inconsistent, but according to skipper Freddie Garcia the big southpaw will remain in the rotation.
Kemp records three-hit gameSunday 7/13, 6:47 PM CT
Matt Kemp went 3-for-4 with a walk in his return to the leadoff after hitting seventh in the lineup on Saturday.

Our View: Nomar Garciaparra hit at the top of the order on Saturday. Kemp has the speed and the OBP to leadoff, and his lack of power numbers this season (nine home runs coming into Sunday's game) has led the coaches to put him in the leadoff spot in place of the injured Juan Pierre.
Billingsley strikes out 13 in winSunday 7/13, 6:43 PM CT
Chad Billingsley struck out a career-high 13 over seven innings helping the Dodgers to a 9-1 win over the Marlins on Sunday afternoon. The Dodgers right-hander allowed one run on five hits and didn't walk a batter.

Our View: Billingsley retired 15 of 16 batters at one point, 10 via strike (six consecutive) in his ninth win of the season.
Street blows fourth saveSunday 7/13, 6:36 PM CT
Huston Street blew his fourth save in 21 chances and the Los Angeles Angels won their 57th game in a 4-3 victory over the A's on Sunday afternoon.

Our View: A combination of seeing-eye ground balls saw Street allow two runs on three hits earning the right-hander his third loss of the season.
Kotchman goes deep Sunday 7/13, 6:20 PM CT
Casey Kotchman hit a home run helping the Los Angeles Angels in their ninth inning comeback 4-3 win over the Oakland A's on Sunday afternoon.

Our View: Kotchman's home run was his ninth of the season.
Bailey strong in lossSunday 7/13, 5:15 PM CT
Homer Bailey, called up to replace the injured Aaron Harang, allowed two runs on five hits, walked none and struck out four over 5.2 innings of work on Sunday afternoon

Our View: The mistake Bailey made was to opposing pitcher C.C. Sabathia, an 0-2 pitch in the third that cleared the wall. Bailey left with a runner at first and 2-1 lead in the sixth, but the bullpen let him down.
Super C.C. homers in complete gameSunday 7/13, 5:11 PM CT
CC Sabathia will soon earn the nickname Super C.C. in Milwaukee, especially if he can help the team make the playoffs for the first time in decades. The lefty hit a home run and pitched a complete game helping the Brewers avoid being swept by the Reds on Sunday afternoon.

Our View: Sabathia homered off Reds' starter Homer Bailey in the third, his third career home run and scattered eight hits and giving up two earned runs for his second straight NL victory.
Berkman steals 15thSunday 7/13, 4:50 PM CT
Lance Berkman and his teammates went into the All Star break on a high note Sunday. The first baseman went 1-for-3, but in a battle of two last place teams, the Astros ended up the victors with a 5-0 win in Washington.

Our View: The offensive prowess of Berkman has been highlighted in the first half of the season, but maybe his most impressive number is the 15th base he stole on Sunday.
Wigginton goes deep in Astros winSunday 7/13, 4:43 PM CT
Ty Wigginton went 2-for-3 with one RBI helping the Houston Astros defeat the Washington Nationals 5-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Our View: One of Wigginton's hits was a solo shot to left field in the second inning, his eighth home run of the season.
Perez suffers seventh lossSunday 7/13, 4:41 PM CT
Odalis Perez once again pitched well enough to win, but received no run support as the Nationals fell 5-0 to Brandon Backe and the Houston Astros on Sunday afternoon.

Our View: Perez allowed three runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out six in his seventh loss of the season. The lefty has a 3.71 ERA with three wins.
Backe pitches and hitsSunday 7/13, 4:38 PM CT
Brandon Backe pitched seven scoreless innings on Sunday afternoon and helped himself with a pair of hits as the Houston Astros scored a 5-0 victory over the Washington Nationals.

Our View: Backe raised his season batting average to .345 and lowered his ERA to 4.76.
Miles continues to hitSunday 7/13, 3:56 PM CT
Aaron Miles continues to hit, and he went 3-for-5 with five RBI against the Pirates today. Miles collected a triple and home run on the day.

Our View: If Miles can do anything, it's slap the ball around. His average is now .317, and though he will not provide power or many RBI (despite today's efforts), NL-only owners could do worse if they need a boost in average.
Osoria gets roughed upSunday 7/13, 3:53 PM CT
Franquelis Osoria was hit hard, surrendering four runs in one-third of an inning, raising his ERA to 6.58 on the year.

Our View: This was only his second game after coming back from the disabled list, so it's possible he had some rust on him. He holds no fantasy value due to the fact that he does not accumulate many holds.
Glaus destroys PiratesSunday 7/13, 3:50 PM CT
The Pittsburgh Pirates will have nightmares about Troy Glaus, as he continues to crush them. He went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run today, and is now hitting an absurd .510 against Pittsburgh for the season.

Our View: Glaus started to head up as the All-Star break came around, and he is a good source of power and RBI for your fantasy squad. His average will fluctuate, but it is worth it if you need home runs and RBI.
Hamels strikes out eightSunday 7/13, 3:45 PM CT
Cole Hamels struck out eight Diamondbacks, and threw seven innings but did not factor into the decision in the Phillies 6-3 win over Arizona. He allowed 11 hits and walked only one.

Our View: Hamels is one of the best in the game, and though he is just three games over .500 on the season, he has pitched better than that record would indicate.
Reynolds can't find offenseSunday 7/13, 3:43 PM CT
Mark Reynolds 0-for-4 with three strikeouts for the Diamondbacks today, and his average for the month of July is now under .200.

Our View: Reynolds is a very streaky hitter, and though he has good power numbers, his average being under .250 hurts those who have him on their fantasy squad.
Burrell homers in victorySunday 7/13, 3:41 PM CT
Pat Burrell hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning which led to the Phillies beating the Diamondbacks 6-3. It was home run number 23 on the year for him.

Our View: Burrell also has 57 RBI and is hitting .275 with an OBP over .400, so he continues to please fantasy players.
Webb throws wellSunday 7/13, 3:38 PM CT
Brandon Webb threw well in the Diamondbacks 6-3 loss to the Phillies on Sunday. Webb pitched seven innings and struck out six while allowing two runs on seven hits.

Our View: Despite some recent less-than-perfect outings, Webb had a very good first half and is a fantasy stalwart as a pitcher.
Jenkins leaves gameSunday 7/13, 3:35 PM CT
Geoff Jenkins left today's game against Arizona in the eighth inning due to a left elbow contusion, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Our View: No word yet on how serious the injury is. We will keep you updated.
Eckstein plays DHSunday 7/13, 3:14 PM CT
David Eckstein was the designated hitter for the Toronto Blue Jays in their 4-1 victory over the Yankees. He went 1-for-4 with one strikeout in the game, and is hitting .269 on the year.

Our View: The diminutive shortstop isn't the most likely candidate to play DH, and he has struggled lately, with a .207 average in his last nine games. He holds little fantasy value.
Hairston leaves game with injurySunday 7/13, 3:11 PM CT
Jerry Hairston Jr. left today's game with an injured right hamstring and was carried off the field, according to The Sports Network.

Our View: Being carried off the field does not sound good. There has been no word on his status, but this is a blow to fantasy owners who were enjoying his out-of-nowhere season.
Street to Tampa?Sunday 7/13, 2:26 PM CT
Huston Street has been a name coming up recently in talks that he will head to the Tampa Rays, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.com.

Our View: Street could take over for Troy Percival as closer if this move happens, diminishing Percival's standing in fantasy leagues. Street would remain valuable and may even gain value because he could get more save opportunities on one of the best teams in baseball.
Vizquel to retire?Sunday 7/13, 2:01 PM CT
It is possible that Omar Vizquel may retire during the All-Star break because of the miserable season he is having offensively, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

Our View: Vizquel is hitting just .150 in 147 at-bats with no home runs and just nine RBI this season. Only three of his 22 hits have been for extra bases, and all have been doubles. Needless to say, nobody anywhere should have him on their fantasy squad.
LaRoche out todaySunday 7/13, 1:55 PM CT
Adam LaRoche did not start today's game against St. Louis due to a right thumb contusion, but he is available to pinch-hit, according to Pirates.com.

Our View: LaRoche is hitting well lately, so this comes at a bad time. In his last 10 games, he is 13-for-34, an average of .382, and has three home runs during that time. NL-only fantasy owners should take note.
Oswalt will not be ready after breakSunday 7/13, 1:48 PM CT
Roy Oswalt will miss his turn in the rotation on Friday due to his strained left hip abductor, and will be replaced by Brian Moehler, according to Astros.com.

Our View: Oswalt may yet go on the DL, and this just adds what already has been a frustrating season for those who have Oswalt on their fantasy team. His fate will be decided when the team returns from the break on Friday.
Ramirez out of lineupSunday 7/13, 1:35 PM CT
Hanley Ramirez is not in today's lineup for the Marlins game against the Dodgers after he injured his right (throwing) shoulder in yesterday's game, according to the Palm Beach Post. It is unknown whether or not Ramirez will still play in the All-Star Game.

Our View: Alfredo Amezaga took over for Ramirez in yesterday's game, and he may get the start today. Fantasy owners can only hope this injury is not serious.
Volquez will not start All-Star GameSunday 7/13, 1:16 PM CT
Edinson Volquez will not be the National League starter for the All-Star Game, according to MLB.com. Volquez threw 114 pitches in Saturday's game.

Our View: Volquez certainly deserved to be considered for the honor considering the season he is having. He may still throw an inning in the game, however.
Tracy playing everydaySunday 7/13, 12:55 PM CT
Due to the injury to outfielder Eric Byrnes, Chad Tracy is playing everyday. Tracy was 3-for-5 with three RBI on Saturday to raise his average to .303.

Our View: He's also been batting cleanup which means he'll have plenty of RBI chances in the second half.
Marmol replaces Wood as All-StarSunday 7/13, 12:24 PM CT
Carlos Marmol will replace teammate Kerry Wood on the National League All-Star team, according to MLB.com. Marmol's selection was due to him having the next highest vote total on the Player Ballot.

Our View: Marmol has struggled recently, but at the time of the vote, he was dominating. However, he still holds fantasy value because of his strikeout rate and low WHIP.
Escobar will get MRI on shoulderSunday 7/13, 11:35 AM CT
Yunel Escobar will receive an MRI on his injured left shoulder and does not know if he will be ready to play after the All-Star break, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View: Escobar has fantasy value in NL-only leagues and deep mixed leagues, so this injury is obviously a concern. We will keep you updated when the results of the MRI are known.
Ross hitting streak at 16Sunday 7/13, 11:23 AM CT
Cody Ross changed his approach at the plate to concentrate less on power, and he now has a 16-game hitting streak, and has hit in 21 of his past 22 games, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View: Ross' performance should be registering with fantasy owners. His power has decreased somewhat as his approach changed, but his average has skyrocketed. This isn't likely to last, but it wouldn't hurt to grab him off the waiver wire if he is available.
Taveras still not 100%Sunday 7/13, 11:01 AM CT
Willy Taveras was held out of Saturday's game, as his left quadriceps is still not completely healed, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: For a player whose game is built on speed, Taveras can't afford to have an injury to his legs. He does not hold much fantasy value unless his legs are 100%, because he won't add anything else to your team.
Martinez says he's okaySunday 7/13, 10:32 AM CT
Pedro Martinez insisted he was fine after being pulled from the game last night, according to the New York Daily News. "It’s not anything uncommon. It’s scar tissue and stuff like that. The doctor already checked me. My shoulder is perfectly fine," Martinez said.

Our View: This is good news for Martinez and any fantasy owners who have him on their roster in hopes he can return to being even a shadow of what he once was. If you do have him on your squad, keep him on the bench for the time being.
Garciaparra hits leadoffSunday 7/13, 10:23 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra hit leadoff for the Dodgers yesterday, something he had not done in six years, according to the Los Angeles Times. "We'll sacrifice the speed to get someone who'll give us quality at-bats," Joe Torre said.

Our View: Garciaparra is hitting just .228 on the year with an on-base percentage of only .313, not something that would necessarily be considered "quality." He is hitting just .158 in his last seven games, and should not be on fantasy rosters at the moment.
Phillies trying to acquire FuentesSunday 7/13, 9:47 AM CT
Brian Fuentes is on the Phillies radar, and they are trying to acquire him, according to Philly.com. The Rockies asked for either righthander Carlos Carrasco or catcher Lou Marson, both of whom are in Double-A, but the Phillies declined.

Our View: Fuentes going to the Phillies would mean he would not be a closer, as Brad Lidge has that gig locked up. That would mean his fantasy value takes a hit, unless you play in leagues that use holds as a statistic.
Suppan will be back soonSunday 7/13, 9:36 AM CT
Jeff Suppan is progressing nicely and will be back in the rotation when he is eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list on July 22, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View: Suppan is scheduled to face the Cardinals on that day, and he is expected to make that start. For the season, Suppan does not have numbers strong enough to be considered a viable option on fantasy teams.
Nunez set to returnSunday 7/13, 8:53 AM CT
Reliever Leo Nunez will return to the Royals after the All-Star break, according to the Kansas City Star. He had been rehabbing a strained right lat.

Our View: Nunez is a good middle reliever , but he only holds value in fantasy leagues that utilize holds. He has seven of them on the season.
Gorzelanny throws well in Triple-ASunday 7/13, 8:33 AM CT
Tom Gorzelanny made a start for Triple-A Indianapolis and threw well, giving up one run and four hits in three innings, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "Obviously, we need arms, but we're looking at his future," Pirates manager John Russell said.

Our View: Gorzelanny was terrible this season after showing so much promise last year. He walked more people than he struck out, and should not have been on anybody's fantasy squad.
Lincecum may not throw in All-Star GameSunday 7/13, 8:20 AM CT
Tim Lincecum may not throw in the All-Star Game, according to the Contra Costa Times. The righty had diminished velocity in his last start and a large pitch count in today's game against Chicago would mean he would be unavailable to throw an inning for the National League All-Stars.

Our View: Lincecum has been fabulous this season, with a 2.66 ERA while striking out an average of more than one batter per inning. The Giants, and fantasy owners for that matter, don't want to see Lincecum pushed, so San Francisco would be doing the right thing if they chose not to let him throw.
Garcia will make startSunday 7/13, 7:46 AM CT
Pitcher Jaime Garcia will start next Sunday when the Cardinals play San Diego, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Garcia is here, so we should see what he can do. It's a good spot to see how he handles himself," St. Louis pitching coach Dave Duncan said.

Our View: Garcia is the top pitching prospect in the Cardinals organization. He has made one appearance in relief, throwing two scoreless innings. Keep an eye out to see how he does in San Diego before adding him to your fantasy team.
Izzy will get save chancesSunday 7/13, 7:37 AM CT
Jason Isringhausen will start to get some chances to close out games, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He's healthy, so now he has to go out there and show he's the best guy. That way he's earned it, and it's not like somebody gave it to him," said manager Tony LaRussa.

Our View: Unfortunately for Isringhausen, he got that chance last night and blew it, giving up three earned runs in one-third of an inning in the Cardinals 12-11 loss to the Pirates. Don't insert him back in your fantasy lineup quite yet.
Ramirez says he'll playSunday 7/13, 6:28 AM CT
The Marlins won the Saturday night battle in Los Angeles without their All-Star Hanley Ramirez . The shortstop left after his second-inning at-bat with right shoulder soreness. Ramirez told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel he felt it [shoulder pain] trying to throw out Nomar Garciaparra on a slow grounder in the first inning, but could have played through it if necessary. Ramirez instead exited and iced the shoulder for the remainder of the game. He expects to play in Sunday afternoon finale, but the coaches didn't comment on his availability.

Our View: Alfredo Amezaga filled in and hit a tie-breaking Texas Leaguer in the seventh inning.
Nolasco keeps rolling for FloridaSunday 7/13, 12:40 AM CT
Florida RHP Ricky Nolasco may not have gotten the win but his arm was more than worthy, pitching six innings to allow two runs (both earned) on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Our View: Nolasco carried three consecutive wins before the no decision, with five wins over his last seven starts, going 9-1 since May 9th.
Ethier leads Dodgers in lossSunday 7/13, 12:38 AM CT
The Dodgers fought through a rough night against the Marlins, falling 5-3 in 11 innings. Outfielder Andre Ethier was their bat of choice on offense, going 2-for-5 with his 11th homer on the season, recording one RBI and one run scored on the night.

Our View: Ethier is doing well at the plate, hitting .364 through July coming into tonight. He now has four homers and nine RBIs for the same span.
Cantu keeps it hotSunday 7/13, 12:37 AM CT
The Marlins and Dodgers battled late into the night to get a winner (Florida, 5-3), but it was the work of infielder Jorge Cantu that kept the Marlins on track. Cantu went 2-for-5, hitting his 18th homer of the season to total one RBI and two runs scored, also adding his third stolen base of the season.

Our View: Cantu is on fire right now, hitting .368 through July coming into tonight and adding his fourth homer of the month, as well as his seventh RBI.
Morton gets win #2Sunday 7/13, 12:03 AM CT
Atlanta RHP Charlie Morton found another win to put on his rookie resume this evening, helping the Braves to a 4-1 win over the Padres. Morton pitched 5 1/3 innings, surrendering just one run on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: Morton now sits at 2-2 on the season with an ERA of 5.93, this clearly standing as his best outing to date. We'll see how the Braves bring him along, but tonight we got a good glimpse of his potential.
