NEWSBREAKERS MLB
Rodney easing back velocitySunday 8/10, 9:45 PM CT
Tigers reliever Fernando Rodney has been easing back his velocity in an attempt to gain better control of his pitches, according to MLive.com. "To just go out there and rev back and throw it at 98 and not be close to the strike zone, that's counterproductive," said Detroit manager Jim Leyland.

Our View: Rodney's biggest problem has been his control, but in his last 4.1 innings, he has walked just one batter, an obvious improvement. His fantasy value is much higher if he can stay as the closer and keep from putting men on base via bases on balls.
Thames could be outSunday 8/10, 9:42 PM CT
Marcus Thames could be out for a while with a sore shoulder, according to MLive.com. "This could be a dangerous one, as far as time, because this time of year I can't have guys sitting around," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

Our View: That sounds an awful lot like, "He's headed for the DL." Nothing is official, of course, but keep an eye on his status for now.
Colon throws wellSunday 8/10, 8:08 PM CT
Bartolo Colon threw well in his rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket, going three innings and allowing no runs while throwing 27 of his 34 pitches for strikes, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Colon was awful in his first rehab start, so this was a marked improvement. He should be able to give fantasy owners, at least in AL-only leagues, a boost to their squad.
Rolen hits DLSunday 8/10, 7:45 PM CT
Third baseman Scott Rolen was placed on the 15-day disabled list with continued soreness in his left shoulder, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Think the Blue Jays might want Troy Glaus back? Rolen's shoulder has been a problem for four seasons now, as he has undergone surgery on it three times since 2005. He'll clearly never be the same player he once was, and isn't someone who needs to be on fantasy rosters.
Baldelli sees first actionSunday 8/10, 6:17 PM CT
Rocco Baldelli played in a game for the first time this season, and went 1-for-4 while batting cleanup in the Rays 11-3 win over the Mariners.

Our View: Baldelli was taken out of the game for a defensive replacement, and it is unknown how much regular playing time he'll get, but he has loads of talent and placing him on your fantasy roster if you need a spark could pay significant dividends.
Suzuki extends hitting streakSunday 8/10, 6:14 PM CT
Ichiro Suzuki now has a 16 game hitting streak with his 2-for-5 performance in Seattle's loss to Tampa Bay. He also stole his 36th base of the season in the contest.

Our View: Suzuki is the only decent thing going for the Mariners. He isn't having quite the year fantasy owners were expecting, but he has been good enough to be an asset, especially with his stolen base total.
Jackson wins againSunday 8/10, 6:12 PM CT
After getting the win today over Seattle, Edwin Jackson now has a victory in each of his last four starts. Jackson went seven innings and allowed just one earned run.

Our View: Jackson has seen his ERA drop to 4.07 now, and he is a very good option in AL-only leagues, and even those in mixed leagues wouldn't be crazy for giving him an opportunity.
Rodriguez has solid gameSunday 8/10, 6:08 PM CT
Alex Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, but it wasn't enough as the Yankees lost to the Angels 4-3.

Our View: Rodriguez was undergoing a brutal month, hitting .161 in August before today's performance put his average above .200. Still, it is A-Rod, and he will continue to crush pitchers in a short while.
Figgins his game winnerSunday 8/10, 6:05 PM CT
Chone Figgins singled off Mariano Rivera in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game for the Angels, 4-3 over the Yankees. He was 2-for-5 overall on the day.

Our View: Figgins is having a difficult August, but maybe he'll be sparked by today's heroics. He still provides fantasy owners with plenty of stolen bases and a solid OBP.
Rodriguez strikes out sideSunday 8/10, 6:02 PM CT
Francisco Rodriguez did not pick up a save, but he did get his second win of the year, as he struck out he side in the ninth to help lead L.A. to a win over N.Y.

Our View: Rodriguez may win the Cy Young Award for the superb season he is having, and he now has 54 K's in under 50 innings.
Anderson extends hitting streakSunday 8/10, 6:00 PM CT
Angels outfielder Garret Anderson extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a 1-for-4 performance in the Angels victory over the Yankees on Sunday.

Our View: Anderson is still a solid contributor, hitting .290 with 65 RBI and a modest 12 home runs. He also has six stolen bases, a bonus sure to please fantasy players.
Aviles fails in six at-batsSunday 8/10, 5:44 PM CT
Royals shortstop Mike Aviles had a very rough day, and despite his team getting a win over Minnesota, he went 0-for-6.

Our View: Not a good day for Aviles, but he was hitting .455 in the month of August, so a cool down was coming one way or another. He is still an excellent resource for a fantasy team in the middle infield.
Young goes hitlessSunday 8/10, 5:42 PM CT
One night after homering and getting two hits, Delmon Young went 0-for-5 in the Twins loss to Minnesota.

Our View: Young has 12 stolen bases and a decent batting average, but his lack of power and poor plate discipline make him an iffy fantasy outfielder. If he could just get to 15-20 homers per year, his value would up exponentially.
Meche walks sevenSunday 8/10, 5:39 PM CT
Gil Meche did not figure in the decision, but he threw 6.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits and an absurd seven walks in the Royals 5-4 win over Minnesota.

Our View: Meche is somewhat inconsistent, and though he has decent overall numbers, he is best left to AL-only leagues.
Hulett recalledSunday 8/10, 4:54 PM CT
Tug Hulett was called up by Seattle from Triple-A to take the place of Willie Bloomquist, who was put on the DL, according to TSN.com.

Our View: Hulett is 1-for-3 this season, and is of no consequence in fantasy baseball.
Bloomquist hits DLSunday 8/10, 4:48 PM CT
Willie Bloomquist was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring, according to The Sports Network.

Our View: Bloomquist has 14 stolen bases, but with no home runs and just nine RBI, it would be tough to give him a roster spot in anything but deep AL-only leagues.
Quentin homers againSunday 8/10, 4:35 PM CT
Carlos Quentin hit his 32nd home run of the season, a two-run shot, and the White Sox took down Boston.

Our View: Quentin was always a good prospect, but Arizona soured on him, and shipped him to Chicago, who is now reaping the rewards right alongside fantasy owners.
Ortiz K's twiceSunday 8/10, 4:32 PM CT
David Ortiz went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in the Red Sox loss to Chicago.

Our View: Tough August for Ortiz. He had a nice day on Saturday, but Sunday's performance means the lefty slugger is hitting just .154 for the month. Stick with him, though. He's too good not to bounce back soon.
Floyd wins 12thSunday 8/10, 4:30 PM CT
Gavin Floyd won his 12th game of the season, though it was not one of his better efforts. In 5.1 innings against Boston, Floyd surrendered five earned runs on seven hits.

Our View: Floyd has been a solid performer for fantasy owners this season, with a nice win total, ERA and WHIP.
Buchholz hammeredSunday 8/10, 4:28 PM CT
Once again, Clay Buchholz got hammered, lasting only three innings in the Red Sox 6-5 loss to the White Sox. The right-hander allowed five runs on seven hits, including three home runs.

Our View: Buchholz picked up his eighth loss, and since May 7, he has given up less than four earned runs in a start just one time. He has no place in fantasy leagues.
Montanez gets three hitsSunday 8/10, 4:11 PM CT
Luis Montanez went 3-for-4 with an RBI in Baltimore's 15-7 loss to the Rangers.

Our View: Montanez is hitting .500 this season, albeit in just 10 at-bats. Still, he was a top-five pick in the 2002 MLB draft, he was destroying Double-A pitching, and now he's off to a good start in Baltimore. If you need a sleeper who could provide your fantasy team with some offense, take a look at Montanez.
Hamilton hits 28thSunday 8/10, 4:08 PM CT
MVP candidate Josh Hamilton went 3-for-6 and hit his 28th home run in Texas' victory over Baltimore. He now has 111 RBI on the season.

Our View: His fantastic season continues. He's easily one of the top players in fantasy baseball.
Sherrill gives up threeSunday 8/10, 4:06 PM CT
George Sherrill was not pitching in a save situation, but he still allowed three runs in his one inning of work.

Our View: Sherrill does have 31 saves, but his recent performances have been poor. In July his ERA was 6.75. So far in August it's 11.25.
Harrison pitches poorly, still winsSunday 8/10, 4:03 PM CT
Texas hurler Matt Harrison gave up six earned runs in five innings, but still came away with his fourth win as Texas beat Baltimore 15-7.

Our View: His 4-2 record is very deceiving. He has an ERA over 7.00 and a WHIP near 2.00. Not a guy who should be on fantasy teams.
Choo generates three doubles Sunday 8/10, 3:55 PM CT
Shin-Soo Choo went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Jays. All three of his hits were doubles.

Our View: That was the second time in his last three games he recorded three hits. He is worth consideration in AL-only leagues while he is hot.
Wells goes hitless Sunday 8/10, 3:50 PM CT
Vernon Wells went 0-for-4 in his first game back from the DL following his recovery from a left hamstring strain, in Sunday's 4-0 loss to Cleveland.

Our View: He missed 26 games while on the shelf, and may need some time to shake off the rust and find his swing.
Lee hurls another gem Sunday 8/10, 3:46 PM CT
Cliff Lee hurled another gem in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Blue Jays, as he notched eight scoreless innings, with eight hits allowed, to go along with no walks and one strikeout.

Our View: Lee improves to an American League-leading 16 wins, and lowered his ERA to 2.45.
Jacobs blasts 25th homer Sunday 8/10, 3:30 PM CT
Mike Jacobs went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 8-2 victory over the Mets. His other hit was a double and he scored three runs in the game (drew one walk).

Our View: Jacobs has now homered in back-to-back games, and has 25 for the season.
Kennedy sent down Sunday 8/10, 3:21 PM CT
Ian Kennedy has been sent down to Triple-A Scranton, according to the AP. Billy Traber has been recalled from Scranton as the corresponding move.

Our View: Kennedy has proven he is not ready to make an impact with the Yankees, as he went 0-4 over nine starts, with a 8.17 ERA and 1.92 WHIP. He punched his ticket to Scranton by surrendering five earned runs on nine hits over a mere two innings in his last start Friday against the Angels.
Traber recalled Sunday 8/10, 3:16 PM CT
Billy Traber has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton, according to the AP. Ian Kennedy was sent down to Scranton as the adjoining move.

Our View: Traber has been brought in to help aid an overworked Yankees' bullpen. He allowed eight earned runs over 12 innings with a 1.58 WHIP this season, and does not merit fantasy attention.
Ellis registers lone RBI for Oakland Sunday 8/10, 3:11 PM CT
Mark Ellis went 1-for-4 and registered Oakland's lone RBI in Sunday's 6-1 loss to Detroit. His hit was a single.

Our View: He collected two RBI in the three-game set against Detroit, but only hit .153 (2-for-13). He is only worth holding in deeper AL-only leagues.
Ordonez leads Tigers to win Sunday 8/10, 3:02 PM CT
Magglio Ordonez led the Tigers in Sunday's 6-1 win over Oakland, as he went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Both of his hits were singles.

Our View: He extended his hitting streak to nine games, with three multi-hit efforts over the span.
Robertson in control Sunday 8/10, 2:57 PM CT
Nate Robertson was in control in Sunday's 6-1 win over Comerica Park, as he only issued one earned run on five hits over 7.2 innings, with one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View: He nailed down his first win since June 21, snapping an eight-start skid.
Price set for Triple-A debut Sunday 8/10, 2:36 PM CT
David Price has been promoted to Triple-A Durham and is set to make his debut Wednesday against Norfolk, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View: Price likely will be called up to the majors at some point this season, with the only question being whether the Rays will use him as a starter or in relief. The former top pick is worth acquiring off the waiver wire if you have a spot for him. He was 7-0 with a 1.89 ERA at Double-A Montgomery prior to his promotion to Durham.
Baldelli activated Sunday 8/10, 2:31 PM CT
Rocco Baldelli has been activated from the 60-day DL, according to the Tampa Tribune. Carl Crawford has been placed on the 15-day DL as the corresponding move.

Our View: He started Sunday's game in right field, with Eric Hinske roaming left. Baldelli should see plenty of action while Crawford is out, and is worth a look in AL-only leagues if you could use help, namely in the power department.
Crawford placed on DL Sunday 8/10, 2:27 PM CT
Carl Crawford has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a right middle finger tendon subluxation, according to the Tampa Tribune. Rocco Baldelli was activated from the 60-day DL as the adjoining move.

Our View: He is optimistic he will return when first eligible, but if he has ligament damage, his fantasy season would likely be over. He will be examined further by team doctors Monday.
Greinke drops appeal Sunday 8/10, 2:21 PM CT
Zack Greinke has decided to drop his appeal of a five-game suspension, which he began serving Sunday, according to the AP. Greinke was given the suspension for hitting Nick Swisher of Chicago with a pitch in the seventh inning on August 3. Greinke said, "They said more than likely I wouldn’t beat it, so there’s kind of no point to go through with it and that more than likely it would be a waste of time. Even if you’re not guilty, the evidence is too strong against you to have a chance."

Our View: Greinke’s next scheduled start is Saturday against the Yankees and will give him six days between starts, instead of his normal four.
Mathis scratched Sunday 8/10, 2:13 PM CT
Jeff Mathis was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to irritation in his right eye, according to the OC Register.

Our View: Mike Napoli took his spot in the lineup at catcher. Mathis is considered day-to-day.
Carrasco to start Sunday 8/10, 2:08 PM CT
D.J. Carrasco is expected to take Jose Contreras' next start in the rotation, which will be Thursday against the Royals, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: The newly recalled Lance Broadway will work as a reliever. Carrasco is worth targeting, as he holds a 2.57 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 21 innings with Chicago this season, with 18 strikeouts.
Wells designated for assignment Sunday 8/10, 12:59 PM CT
Kip Wells has been designated for assignment, according to the AP.

Our View: Wells struggled this season, with a 5.27 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over 27.1 innings, and held little fantasy value prior to his designation.
Bradley won't start until Tuesday Sunday 8/10, 12:41 PM CT
Milton Bradley won't start again for the Rangers until Tuesday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: He has been sitting out with a strained left quad, but ran without a problem before Saturday's game. Going by his history of injuries, he will be a risky fantasy option for the new fantasy week.
Wakefield headed to DL Sunday 8/10, 12:36 PM CT
Tim Wakefield is headed to the DL due to shoulder tightness, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Wakefield was scheduled to next pitch on Tuesday night against the Rangers. Instead, the Red Sox will call up a pitcher from the minors to pitch that night, and Wakefield will be placed on the DL. He isn't expected to miss more than two starts.
Rolen sits out Sunday Sunday 8/10, 12:32 PM CT
Scott Rolen was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to his sore left shoulder, according to the AP.

Our View: He was replaced at third base by Marco Scutaro. Rolen is not hurting that much, but doesn't have a lot of mobility. The team is trying to get it stretched out so he can have more. He should be avoided in standard mixed leagues until he proves he can be effective again.
Logan optioned Sunday 8/10, 12:27 PM CT
Boone Logan has been optioned to Triple-A Charlotte, according to the Chicago Tribune. The Sox recalled Chris Getz from Charlotte as the adjoining move.

Our View: Logan failed to impress the Sox this season, as he held a 5.36 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over 40.1 innings over relief, with three losses.
Getz recalled Sunday 8/10, 12:23 PM CT
Chris Getz has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte, according to the Chicago Tribune. Pitcher Boone Logan has been optioned to Charlotte as the corresponding move.

Our View: Getz is good defensively and could work as an infielder and outfielder, but won't like get enough at-bats for him to merit fantasy consideration.
Broadway recalled Sunday 8/10, 12:20 PM CT
Lance Broadway has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte, according to the Chicago Tribune. The team placed Jose Contreras on the 15-day DL after rupturing his left Achilles.

Our View: He will start out as a reliever, and it remains to be seen if he will be a candidate to replace Contreras in the rotation, who will miss the remainder of the 2008 campaign. Broadway could be worth a look in AL-only leagues if you need some help.
Contreras placed on DL Sunday 8/10, 12:15 PM CT
Jose Contreras has been officially placed on the 15-day DL, after suffering a season-ending ruptured left Achilles, according to the Chicago Tribune. Lance Broadway has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte as the corresponding move.

Our View: The 37-year-old hurler's career in Chicago could be over. He has one year left on his contract.
Mench optioned Sunday 8/10, 11:22 AM CT
Kevin Mench has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, according to TSN. The Jays activated Vernon Wells from the DL, and felt the barely used Mench was expendable to make room on the roster.

Our View: Mench failed to hit any home runs over 86 at-bats this season, and maintained a poor .233 batting average. He held no fantasy value prior to his demotion.
Wells returns Sunday 8/10, 11:20 AM CT
Vernon Wells returned to the Jays' lineup Sunday as a DH, according to TSN. The team optioned Kevin Mench to Triple-A Syracuse as the corresponding move. Wells was on the DL with a left hamstring strain, and missed 26 games.

Our View: Wells should be safe to return to fantasy lineups for the new fantasy week, and doesn't believe he will have many limitations in his first games back.
Ross designated for assignment Sunday 8/10, 11:05 AM CT
David Ross has been designated for assignment, according to the AP. The Reds recalled catcher Ryan Hanigan from Triple-A Louisville as the adjoining move.

Our View: Ross failed to find his power stroke with only three homers over 134 at-bats, and failed to keep his job with a mere .231 batting average.
Jones slated for pen session Sunday 8/10, 10:02 AM CT
Todd Jones, who is recovering from right shoulder inflammation, is slated to throw a bullpen session Monday, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: Barring a setback, he could be activated from the DL as early as Friday. As for his role upon his return, Jim Leyland will play it by ear and see what he looks like.
Neshek not expected back Sunday 8/10, 9:10 AM CT
Pat Neshek, who has been out of action since early May due to an acute partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, is not expected to return to the Twins this season, but is still not going to be counted out, according to the Star-Tribune. Neshek has started a throwing program in Florida. He's throwing from 60 feet but will soon move to 75 feet, then 90. He might throw off a mound by the end of the month. Manager Ron Gardenhire said, "If everything goes great and he feels nothing sure he can come back and be here in September or something. The problem is when you get to September, there is nowhere to pitch during a rehab stint. No place to go."

Our View: Neshek was solid as a setup man for the Twins this season, and would help their push to claim the AL Central division title, but fantasy owners should not be counting on him to return.
Cuddyer vows to return Sunday 8/10, 9:02 AM CT
Michael Cuddyer sustained a broken left foot while playing in a Triple-A game, but he vows to return to the Twins this season, according to the Star-Tribune. He said, "I'm expecting to be back. Even at the six-week point, that leaves about two weeks to contribute in some capacity. If it's four weeks, well, there's four weeks to contribute."

Our View: You have to admire his dedication, but fantasy owners in standard mixed leagues should not hold onto him for just a few weeks of action if he does in fact return this season.
Colon set for second rehab outing Sunday 8/10, 8:46 AM CT
Bartolo Colon, who is recovering from back stiffness, is scheduled to throw his second rehab outing today for Pawtucket, according to the Boston Globe. Hopefully he will have a solid outing, as he didn't get out of the first inning in his first appearance.

Our View: If he can find his form soon and return to Boston, he could provide fantasy depth down the stretch.
Lowrie is fine Sunday 8/10, 8:41 AM CT
Jed Lowrie is fine after being hit on the left foot in Friday's game, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Lowrie started at shortstop against the White Sox Saturday, and went 1-for-5 at the plate, and extended his hitting streak to eight games. He has proven to be a solid pickup in AL-only leagues.
Varitek dropped to ninth Sunday 8/10, 8:36 AM CT
Jason Varitek was dropped to ninth in the batting order against Chicago Saturday, according to the Boston Globe. Manager Terry Francona noted that the move had nothing to do with the veteran catcher's slumping over the last two months.

Our View: Varitek is batting just .170 (31-for-182) with two home runs over his last 56 games, but is currently on a four-game hitting streak, and went 1-for-4 with a run scored from the ninth spot in Saturday's win.
Gallagher battling shoulder ailment Sunday 8/10, 7:06 AM CT
Sean Gallagher's turn in the rotation has been skipped as he is battling mild shoulder inflammation, according to the SF Chronicle. He said, "For a couple of weeks, I just tried to pitch through it and kept my mouth shut. That wasn't smart. I was going 100 percent and all of a sudden I stopped, that's a lot of torque. I felt a little something, not like a pop or a strain, but like a muscle rolled over."

Our View: He is aiming to start Thursday against the Rays.
Ichiro posts numbers, but Seattle fallsSunday 8/10, 1:52 AM CT
As is often the case, outfielder Ichiro Suzuki represented the efforts of the Seattle offense this evening, taking the Tampa Bay Rays to 11 innings before falling 8-7. Ichiro went 4-for-6 on the night with his fifth homer of the season, good for three RBIs and one run scored.

Our View: Ichiro is the face of consistency, and while his numbers have slipped a bit this season, he is more than capable of producing such valuable rewards, both for fantasy owners and the Mariners.
Crawford leads TB towards 11-inning winSunday 8/10, 1:46 AM CT
To the shock and surprise of no one, the Rays found production from outfielder Carl Crawford in tonight's 8-7, 11-inning win at Seattle, going 2-for-4 at the dish with two walks and his 12th double of the season, totaling two RBIs and one run scored on the night.

Our View: Crawford has been a bit underwhelming this season, though hopes of a rise towards and in the playoffs loom. Tonight shows it's in the tank and could be on the way.
