The Blue Jays optioned Scott Richmond to Triple-A Syracuse Friday. GM J.P. Ricciardi said Richmond will probably be back up when rosters expand. "We haven't made our minds up on September call-ups yet but he did a good job, a real good job," Ricciardi said. "He came out of nowhere and put himself on the map. He kept us in three games. Going forward, he's definitely in our plans - that's great."

B.J. Upton was pulled from Friday's game in the sixth inning for failing to hustle while attempting to beat out a double play.

Mariano Rivera picked up his fifth loss of the year Friday, allowing a run to cross on a wild pitch in the Yanks' 5-4 defeat to Kansas City. Mo allowed two hits but struck out two in his inning.

Our View: We'll cut Mo some slack. His ERA on the year ballooned to 1.70 with this outing.
Meche solid but bullpen blows his winFriday 8/15, 11:16 PM CT
Gil Meche's terrific effort was spoiled Friday by the Royals' bullpen. Meche allowed only one run on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings but lost his win when Ron Mahay gave up two runs in the seventh. The Royals went on to win the game

Our View: Meche has been terrific after a horrible April.

Carlos Silva had another stinker Friday, allowing nine runs on nine hits and a walk over 3 1/3 innings.

Our View: Silva has won one start since April and now has a 6.36 ERA on the year. How's that $48 million investment working out for you, Seattle?
Liriano wins againFriday 8/15, 10:46 PM CT
Francisco Liriano was in fine form Friday, shutting out the Mariners on two hits and two walks while striking out five over seven innings.

Our View: Liriano has won all three of his starts since returning from the minors, but he hasn't exactly faced offensive juggernauts in Cleveland, Kansas City and Seattle.

Cliff Lee added another chapter to his storybook 2008 season Friday, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts over all nine innings. It was Lee's third complete game of the season, and he now has an improbable record of 17-2.

Our View: Those that thought they could "sell high" on Lee at the All-Star break are likely regretting the decision, as he's still been dynamite.
MRI reveals sprain for Sweeney Friday 8/15, 8:44 PM CT
An MRI on Ryan Sweeney's right thumb revealed only a sprain, according to MLB.com. However, manager Bob Geren still isn't sure if Sweeney will be available to return when eligible on August 28. "His thumb is just sprained, and there is no significant damage," Geren said. "When his mobility comes back and he's able to play, he'll play. It is great news. Obviously, he is still very sore. When the 15 days are up, we'll see where he's at."

Our View: Sweeney has slumped recently, but overall he's had a pretty good rookie year. Hopefully he'll be back before the end of the month, but he'll definitely be back sometime in September.

Recovering from a torn tendon in his right thumb, Casilla said he experienced no pain during the drills. He also hit off a tee. While he said he felt fine hitting right-handed, the switch hitter said he had some pain while batting left-handed.

Our View: Casilla said he might take live batting practice on Monday and could begin a rehab assignment next week if all goes well. It was originally thought that Casilla would be out for the season, so he's obviously made a miraculous recovery.
Buchholz pushed backFriday 8/15, 8:14 PM CT
With Friday's rainout, Clay Buchholz will have his start pushed back to next Wednesday, according to the Boston Herald. Buchholz was supposed to start on Sunday.

Our View: Buchholz's original turn in the rotation was actually tonight, but he was pushed back for Paul Byrd. Buchholz's rotation spot will be in serious jeopardy when Tim Wakefield and/or Bartolo Colon return.
Colon exits rehab outing earlyFriday 8/15, 8:05 PM CT
Bartolo Colon was supposed to work four innings, or 55-60 pitches, for Triple-A Pawtucket Friday, but he lasted just one inning before exiting, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: It's not known why Bartolo exited, but the best bet would be because of his back, which is why he's on the DL. We'll update you on his status when more is known.
Joba plays catch for first time since injuryFriday 8/15, 6:59 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain threw 25 times from 65 feet Friday, the first time he's played catch since he exited an Aug. 4 start with rotator cuff tendinitis, according to MLB.com. "It was very good," Chamberlain said. "I got loose at the end. After eight days, when you get out there and throw, you're still kind of leery. But everything went well." Joba is scheduled to play catch again on Saturday and hopes to throw off a mound as early next week.

Our View: The Yankees have discussed the possibility of bringing back Chamberlain as a reliever to reduce the stress on his shoulder. We'll let you know how his rehab progresses.

Our View: The Rockies' opening day second baseman, Nix hit .125 in 56 at-bats for Colorado. He was unlikely to return to the majors this year before the injury, and obviously the chances of a return are even more of a longshot now.

Troy Percival is expected to miss 2-4 weeks because of the knee injury that has landed him on the DL, according to the St. Petersburg Times. VP Andrew Friedman said regarding Percival's knee that there is "cartilage involvement" that is "not a tear." Andrew Brackman is ready to start throwing batting practice, according to the AP. The Yankees' 2007 first-round draft pick, is coming back from Tommy John surgery. He also had an appendectomy on June 10.

Washburn upset he isn't a TwinFriday 8/15, 5:34 PM CT
Jarrod Washburn is upset that the Mariners weren't able to work out a deal with the Twins, according to the Seattle Times. The lefty has a home in Minnesota and would move from a cellar dweller to a contending team. "If the rumors are accurate, it's too bad,'' he said. "It would have been ideal. It would have been perfect. It would have gotten me to a place that's contending and it's in my own damn backyard.'' One rumor had the Twins offering up Boof Bonser in return. "If that was the case, how much more do you think you're going to get? A young guy with a great arm who's cheap.''

Our View: Washburn really hasn't had a very good year, but teams are still beating down the door to acquire him. The M's aren't going to get more than a guy like Bonser given Washburn's salary, so it appears Jarrod will remain in the Pacific Northwest.
Mendoza sent downFriday 8/15, 5:27 PM CT
The Rangers optioned Luis Mendoza to Triple-A Oklahoma City Friday.

Our View: No surprise here. Mendoza posted an 8.13 ERA in 14 games (11 starts).
Millwood activated, will startFriday 8/15, 5:25 PM CT
Kevin Millwood was activated from the DL Friday and will start tonight against the Rays. He had been out with a strained right groin.

Our View: Erick Aybar will be the man at short now, with Sean Rodriguez backing up.
Jones activated from the DLFriday 8/15, 5:10 PM CT
As expected, the Tigers activated Todd Jones from the DL Friday. He had been out with inflammation in his pitching shoulder.

Our View: It's not clear what role Jones will have, but we're betting it will be of the setup variety. Fernando Rodney and Kyle Farnsworth will probably get most of the save chances.
Gardner recalled from Triple-AFriday 8/15, 5:00 PM CT
As expected, the Yankees recalled Brett Gardner from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Friday to take Melky Cabrera's spot on the roster.

Blalock could begin rehab Tuesday or WednesdayFriday 8/15, 4:58 PM CT
Hank Blalock will take tomorrow off from workouts in the infield and then resume with two straight days of throwing, according to the Dallas Morning News. As expected, the Yankees optioned Melky Cabrera to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Friday. He is batting just .242-8-36 on the year.

Our View: Melky got off to a great start this year but has been useless for the most part since. Brett Gardner replaces Cabrera on the roster.
Bartlett back in lineup FridayFriday 8/15, 4:43 PM CT
Jason Bartlett is back in the lineup Friday for the first time since August 3. He has been out with a bone bruise on his finger.

Our View: If steals are your bag, then stick Jason back in your lineup right away. That's the only thing he offers fantasy owners.
O's sign draft pick MatuszFriday 8/15, 4:40 PM CT
The Orioles signed first-round draft pick Brian Matusz to a contract with a $3.2 million signing bonus, according to MLB.com. Matusz, who went to college at San Diego, was the first pitcher taken in the June draft.

Our View: Nothing like waiting until the last minute. The contract was completed roughly eight hours before the deadline. The lefty be immediately placed on the 40-man roster and should be a fast riser.
Sexson released Friday 8/15, 3:55 PM CT
As expected, Richie Sexson has been released by the Yankees, according to the AP. The club recalled outfielder Brett Gardner from Triple-A Scranton as the corresponding move.

Our View: Sexson was brought to the Yankees to improve their production against left-handed pitching, but he failed to make an impact and was too easy of an out. He only mustered 12 homers over 280 at-bats this season as well.
Ellsbury in Friday's lineup Friday 8/15, 3:42 PM CT
Jacoby Ellsbury is penciled into Friday's starting lineup in center field, according to the Providence Journal. He was out of the starting lineup for three straight games due to a bruise near his tailbone.

Our View: Morales has been hitting very well at Salt Lake, with a .330 average, 12 homers, and 52 RBI over 64 games. He would be worth a look in deeper AL-only leagues, but isn't likely to get many at-bats with Mark Teixeira at first base.

Our View: Izturis originally sprained his thumb on a diving play at Yankee Stadium on August 1. He sat out six games then returned to play twice on the homestand, but he re-injured the thumb when he dove for a ball in the ninth inning against Seattle on Wednesday. Izturis did not make the trip to Cleveland with the team and was scheduled to be examined by hand and wrist specialist Dr. Steven Shin on Friday. Erick Aybar should fill in at shortstop while Izturis is out.
Salas recalled Friday 8/15, 2:57 PM CT
Juan Salas has been recalled from Triple-A to fill the roster spot for Troy Percival, who has been placed on the 15-day DL due to his sprained right knee, this according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View: The 30-year-old will work out of the bullpen and is only worth consideration in deeper AL-only leagues that use middle men.
Percival placed on DL Friday 8/15, 2:54 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Troy Percival has landed on the 15-day DL due to his sprained right knee, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Juan Salas has been recalled from Triple-A as the corresponding move.

Our View: Grant Balfour is believed to be a top candidate for the closer's role while he is out, with Dan Wheeler also in the competition. There is no indication yet as to how long Percival will be out.
Sexson to be waived Friday 8/15, 2:30 PM CT
Richie Sexson will be waived by the Yankees today, according to the NY Post. Cody Ransom is expected to be called up from Triple-A to fill Sexson's spot on the roster.

Our View: Sexson was added to the Yankees to improve their offense against left-handed pitching, but the drastic holes in his swing made him too easy of an out. He only has 12 homers over 280 at-bats as well.
Cabrera to be demotedFriday 8/15, 2:26 PM CT
The NY Post indicates that the Yankees will demote Melky Cabrera to Triple-A Scranton. Brett Gardner will be recalled from Triple-A as the corresponding move.

Our View: Cabrera went from starting in center field to being demoted to the minors. He had potential to break out this season, but it didn't happen for him, as he only hit .242 with eight homers and 36 RBI over 117 games.
Buck in a slump Friday 8/15, 1:57 PM CT
John Buck is in a slump as he is hitless in his last 29 at-bats, according to the KC Star.

Our View: His average has dropped to .223 and he should be left on the bench as a fantasy catcher until he gets back on track.
Maier to serve as backup catcher Friday 8/15, 1:53 PM CT
Mitch Maier will work as an emergency catcher while Miguel Olivo serves his four-game suspension, according to the KC Star. He said, "I guess if they need me in an emergency, I’ll catch. I hope it doesn’t happen. But if need be, I’ll go back there and do what I can do."

Our View: Maier was drafted as a catcher in 2003 but hasn’t played the position since his first professional season. The team opted to go with him as the backup behind John Buck rather than find a replacement outside the current roster.
Tigers unable to land Ibanez Friday 8/15, 1:17 PM CT
The Tigers were unable to reach a deal for Seattle outfielder Raul Ibanez, according to MLive.com. Ibanez, placed on waivers by the Mariners last week, was claimed by multiple teams. The Tigers won the right to exclusively negotiate with the Mariners by having the worst record of teams making a claim.

Our View: The Mariners wanted top prospects back in a trade and could not reach a deal with Detroit. AL Cenrtal rival Minnesota was also unsuccessful in their bid for Ibanez.
Giese placed on DL Friday 8/15, 1:13 PM CT
Dan Giese has been placed on the 15-day DL due to right rotator cuff tendinitis, according to the NY Post.

Our View: Darrell Rasner is a top candidate to cover Giese's next start scheduled for Tuesday against the Jays.
Joba may return to bullpen Friday 8/15, 1:10 PM CT
The NY Post indicates that Joba Chamberlain may be moved back to the bullpen when he returns from the DL following his recovery from rotator cuff tendinitis.

Our View: Moving him back to the pen would reduce the stress on the right shoulder. He is eligible to return from the DL Wednesday, but there is no confirmation that he will be ready at that time.
Richard recalled Friday 8/15, 1:04 PM CT
Clayton Richard has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte, according to the AP. Lance Broadway was optioned to Charlotte as the adjoining move.

Our View: Richard was 0-2 with a 10.38 ERA and 2.23 WHIP over three starts with the Sox in his previous stint this season, and does not merit fantasy consideration this time around.
Percival could land on DL Friday 8/15, 12:36 PM CT
Troy Percival could be headed back to the DL due to a sprained right knee, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View: He was seen on crutches with his right knee in a compression brace after suffering the injury Thursday. Percival will be re-evaluated Friday, and a DL stint is probable. Grant Balfour would be a top candidate to take over his closer's role.
Penn shut down Friday 8/15, 11:28 AM CT
Hayden Penn will be shut down for several weeks with Triple-A Norfolk due to his ailing right shoulder, according to the Baltimore Sun. Team physician Dr.John Wilckens found no structural damage, but the team decided it was best to shut him down with little left to play for this season.

Our View: He is a top pitching prospect, but will likely have to wait until next season to pitch for Baltimore.
Sherrill to remain in BaltimoreFriday 8/15, 11:23 AM CT
George Sherrill was claimed through waivers by at least one unnamed American League team and was pulled back by the Orioles, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: The Orioles have now lost revocable waivers on Sherrill, meaning he cannot be placed on waivers again without the risk of losing him with no compensation in return. So the lefty reliever will remain with Baltimore for the rest of the 2008 season.
Huff clears waivers Friday 8/15, 11:19 AM CT
Aubrey Huff has passed through revocable "trade" waivers and can be dealt until midnight August 31 and still be eligible for a contender's postseason roster, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: If the Orioles deal Huff, they likely would have to absorb some of his contract in order to receive a suitable collection of prospects in return. He has $10 million remaining on his contract, including $8 million in 2009. That is why he passed through waivers despite having a .300 average with 25 homers this season.
Downs may avoid DL Friday 8/15, 9:27 AM CT
Scott Downs' foot injury may not require a trip to the DL, according to The Star. The Jays will hold off on putting him on the DL in the hopes that he can recover within the next few days. Any recovery time will depend on Downs' ability to plant his right foot during his throwing motion. Downs accompanied the team to Boston last night but said, "I probably won't pitch there, I wouldn't think."

Our View: Downs has been pitching well this season, with a 1.40 ERA and 1.09 WHIP over 57.2 innings, with 51 strikeouts. He also has five saves to his credit. We will keep you posted on his status.

Jacoby Ellsbury was out of the starting lineup against the Rangers Thursday for the third straight game, according to the Boston Globe. Ellsbury is still ailing from a bruise near his tailbone after being hit by a pitch from John Danks in Monday's game against the White Sox.

Our View: He is doing much better, and could be fine for the next fantasy week.
Izturis likely headed to DL Friday 8/15, 8:40 AM CT
Maicer Izturis is likely headed to the DL due to his left thumb injury, according to the LA Times. Izturis sprained the thumb in an August 1 game at New York.

Our View: With infielder Sean Rodriguez already on the bench and able to back up shortstop Erick Aybar, the Angels are expected to promote first baseman Kendry Morales from triple-A Salt Lake to fill Izturis' roster spot.
