Matsui only sign of lifeThursday 8/21, 10:11 PM CT
New York's only run production Thursday night was off the bat of Hideki Matsui. His three-run homer in the seventh inning was all the Yankees could muster against Roy Halladay and the Blue Jays losing 14-3.

Our View: Matsui, who returned Tuesday after missing 49 games due to a sore left knee, homered for the first time since June 12 at Oakland.

Sidney Ponson gave up eight hits and seven earned runs in only two innings of work in Thursday's 14-3 loss to the Blue Jays.

Roy Halladay notched his 15th win of the season, as the Blue Jays handed New York its worst loss of the season, 14-3 on Thursday night.

All-star SP Justin Duchscherer has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to Wednesday, because of a pain in the same hip on which he had surgery last summer, according to the AP.

Our View: Duchscherer's MRI revealed no structural damage, so a September return is still in the picture. We'll keep you updated.
Gallagher lands on the DLThursday 8/21, 9:29 PM CT
Oakland has placed SP Sean Gallagher on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 20, with right shoulder fatigue, according to the AP.

Our View: “Hopefully,” is all A's manager Bob Geren would say when asked if Gallagher will pitch again this season. This doesn't sound to convincing. We'll keep you updated on the situation.
Sosa suspendedThursday 8/21, 8:36 PM CT
Jorge Sosa has tested positive for amphetamines and has been suspended for 50 games, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Sosa had been playing for Seattle's Triple-A club. His 50-game suspension will carry over into next season.

Chamberlain scheduled for mound workThursday 8/21, 7:30 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain played catch from 60 feet Thursday and is scheduled to throw off a mound on Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: "It's just different being on a mound rather than just playing catch," Chamberlain said. Chamberlain is hoping to come off the disabled list early next month.
No structural damage for DuchschererThursday 8/21, 4:15 PM CT
The MRI Justin Duchscherer had Wednesday revealed inflammation in his surgically repaired right hip, but no indications of any structural damage, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: This is great news for Duchscherer owners because he could end up avoiding the DL altogether. He is scheduled to get a cortisone shot on Friday, and then rest four or five days before he begins throwing.
Crawford hopes for quick return Thursday 8/21, 3:33 PM CT
Carl Crawford is hoping for a quick return after undergoing surgery last week on his right middle knuckle, according to the Tampa Tribune. The star outfielder said, "I'm going to try my best to get back as soon as possible. I don't know how the rehab is going to go, I don't know how it's going to heal, but I'm definitely hoping for the best and I'm going to do what I can to get back on the field."

Our View: He is scheduled to begin therapy by the end of the week. He wants to return, but there is doubt he will be able to do so. Tampa Bay currently holds a 4.5 game lead ahead of Boston in the AL East.

Zack Greinke allowed five runs (one earned) on six hits over five innings in Thursday's 10-3 loss to the Indians at Progressive Field, with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View: Greinke falls to 9-9, and is 2-4 over his last seven starts. He still has a decent 3.86 ERA and would have more wins if not for poor run support in Kansas City.
Sizemore generates seven RBI Thursday 8/21, 3:08 PM CT
Grady Sizemore went 4-for-5 with seven RBI in Thursday's 10-3 win over the Royals. He hit a triple, a three-run homer, and two singles, and also added a stolen base.

Our View: Sizemore reaches a new season-high with 29 homers, and is on the verge of joining the 30/30 club for the first time in his career (he has 31 stolen bases).

Cliff Lee allowed two earned runs on six hits over seven innings in Thursday's 10-3 win over the Royals at Progressive Field, with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Pavano to start Saturday Thursday 8/21, 2:39 PM CT
Carl Pavano, who is trying to bounce back from right elbow surgery, has been chosen for Saturday's start against Baltimore, according to the AP. Thomas O'Connell (his agent) said, "Obviously, he’s very excited to be back in the big leagues and to pitch for the club. His plan and his focus was to make it back this year and, obviously, he worked extremely hard to put himself in this position."

Our View: Pavano is worth taking a flier on in deeper AL-only leagues. He will be a risky option, but could also prove to be a pleasant surprise.

Toronto has acquired infielder Jose Bautista from Pittsburgh for a player to be named, according to the AP.

Our View: The 27-year-old hit .242 over 314 at-bats with the Pirates this season, with 12 homers and 44 RBI. Scott Rolen has been hindered by his shoulder injury and Bautista was added for depth.

Beckett slated for side-session Thursday 8/21, 1:33 PM CT
Josh Beckett is slated to throw a side session Friday, which is expected to give the Red Sox a better idea as to when he can return to the rotation, according to the Boston Herald. Beckett remains scheduled to pitch on Tuesday in New York, though there are hurdles to clear between now and then. Manager Terry Francona said, "The one thing we haven’t done is we haven’t let him throw. If he’s not ready, we won’t pitch him. We’ll just back him up again and I told him that." Beckett added, "There’s no real change. I probably won’t know anything until I throw."

Our View: While Francona indicated that some of the numbness or “tingling” in Beckett’s right hand has subsided, both Francona and Beckett acknowledged the biggest test will come when Beckett attempts to throw. The Sox have ruled out any major problems, saying the ailment was not related to circulatory issues or an aneurysm. One possible source of the problem is the ulnar nerve, the same nerve that runs through the funny bone and can cause a tingling sensation when aggravated.
Burres candidate for Tuesday Thursday 8/21, 1:09 PM CT
Brian Burres is a top candidate to start Tuesday against the White Sox, according to the Baltimore Sun. The team will need a starter, since Dennis Sarfate was demoted to the bullpen.

Our View: Burres was 7-7 with Baltimore this season, with a weak 5.64 ERA and 1.64 WHIP. He should not be considered if handed Tuesday's start against the AL Central-leading White Sox.
Liz to be recalled Thursday 8/21, 1:05 PM CT
Radhames Liz will be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk in time for Friday's start against the Yankees, according to the Baltimore Sun. The team optioned Garrett Olson to Norfolk as the adjoining move.

Our View: Liz went 2-2 with a solid 2.67 ERA over four starts since being demoted. With Baltimore, he went 4-3 over 10 starts, with a poor 7.47 ERA and 1.79 WHIP. He is only worth consideration in deeper AL-only leagues.
Gathright activated from DL Thursday 8/21, 11:50 AM CT
Joey Gathright has been activated from the 15-day DL following his bout with a bruised right shoulder, according to the AP. Mitch Maier has been placed on the 15-day DL as the corresponding move.

Maier placed on DL Thursday 8/21, 11:47 AM CT
Mitch Maier has been placed on the 15-day DL after suffering multiple facial fractures when he was hit by a pitch against Cleveland, according to the AP. In an adjoining move, the Royals activated Joey Gathright from the 15-day DL and recalled him from his injury rehab assignment at Triple-A Omaha.

Our View: This is disappointing for the Royals, as Maier was hitting well with a .339 average over 56 at-bats.

Kason Gabbard is continuing his rehab from season-ending elbow surgery, and believes he will be ready for the start of the 2009 campaign, according to the Star-Telegram.

Our View: Gabbard struggled this season due to injuries, but posted a solid 6-1 record in 2007, with a 1.34 WHIP. He could bounce back favorably next season if healthy.
Bradley back in action Thursday 8/21, 11:21 AM CT
Milton Bradley returned to the Rangers' lineup Wednesday after leaving Tuesday's game with soreness in his left knee, according to the Star-Telegram.

Our View: He continues to battle a quad injury and has also been forced out of the lineup over the past week with a sinus issue and back stiffness. He went 2-for-3 with a homer Wednesday against Detroit. He will remain an injury risk the rest of the way, but should remain active in lineups.
Blalock expected back Friday Thursday 8/21, 11:16 AM CT
Hank Blalock is on pace to return to the Rangers' lineup Friday after playing in the third game of a rehab assignment for Double-A Frisco on Wednesday, according to the Star-Telegram.

Our View: As previously stated, Blalock is expected to work at first base with Chris Davis moving to third. Blalock had two hits in each of the first two games of his rehab stint, and is worth fantasy consideration in deeper leagues when he returns.
Murphy jogging Thursday 8/21, 11:11 AM CT
David Murphy did some jogging Wednesday for the first time since spraining his knee, according to the Star-Telegram. He reported no pain after his session and said, "I’m getting to the point where I’m getting closer to experimenting with sprinting. The good thing is that the things I’ve done so far I’ve had no problem with."

Our View: He could return to the Rangers in early September. He is a candidate for the AL Rookie of the Year award with a .275 average, 15 homers, 74 RBI, 64 runs scored, and seven stolen bases.
Silva could return by end of month? Thursday 8/21, 9:43 AM CT
Carlos Silva, who is recovering from right elbow tendinitis, is tentatively slated to return to the Mariners' rotation August 31, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Drew misses third straight Thursday 8/21, 9:16 AM CT
J.D. Drew missed his third straight game Wednesday due to lower back stiffness, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: He is feeling better, but manager Terry Francona opted to keep him out Wednesday since he hadn't particpated in baseball activities for a few days. The plan is for him to take batting practice and then target him to return Friday against Toronto.
Red Sox sign Ross Thursday 8/21, 9:07 AM CT
The Red Sox have signed David Ross to a minor league deal, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: He will report to Triple-A Pawtucket, and eventually get called up to work as the No. 3 catcher behind Jason Varitek and Kevin Cash. The Sox would need to promote Ross by August 31 to make him eligible for their post-season roster. He will provide solid insurance at the position, but his fantasy value shall remain minimal.
Tolbert will return in SeptemberThursday 8/21, 7:59 AM CT
Matt Tolbert, who has been out since May due to a torn ligament in his left thumb, will definitely be called up when rosters expand in September, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View: He will provide depth for the Twins' stretch run at the AL Central division title, but won't likely get enough at-bats to make him fantasy worthy.
Cuddyer sheds walking boot Thursday 8/21, 7:54 AM CT
Michael Cuddyer is out of his walking boot, according to the Star Tribune. He is recovering from a broken left foot.

Our View: He has a shot to return to Minnesota in mid-September, but his impact may not be solid enough to merit keeping him on fantasy rosters (in mixed leagues) until then.
Punto back to shortstop Thursday 8/21, 7:51 AM CT
Nick Punto is expected to get most of the starts at shortstop now with Alexi Casilla back at second base, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View: Either way, he remains a middle infielder. Adam Everett is expected to get some starts at shortstop as well.
Bass sent down Thursday 8/21, 7:47 AM CT
Brian Bass has been sent down to Triple-A Rochester, according to the Star Tribune. The team activated Alexi Casilla from the DL as the adjoining move.

Our View: Bass failed to impress as a reliever this season, as he held a 4.87 ERA and 1.55 WHIP over 68.1 innings, with 32 strikeouts.
Casilla activated Thursday 8/21, 7:43 AM CT
Alexi Casilla has been activated from the 15-day DL following his recovery from a torn ligament in his right thumb, according to the Star Tribune. He went 4-for-7 in two games during his rehab stint with Single-A Beloit. To make room on the roster, Minnesota sent Brian Bass to Triple-A Rochester.

Our View: Casilla should be ready to pencil into fantasy lineups for the next fantasy week.
