Our View: This is great news for Duchscherer owners because he could end up avoiding the DL altogether. He is scheduled to get a cortisone shot on Friday, and then rest four or five days before he begins throwing.

Carlos Zambrano only issued one earned run on six hits over seven innings in Thursday's close 3-2 win over the Reds at Wrigley Field, with four walks and four strikeouts. The only run scored against him came on a Jay Bruce home run. Zambrano also hit his fourth home run of the season in the game.

Our View: Zambrano improves to 13-5, and bounced back nicely as he allowed 14 earned runs over his previous two starts (10.1 innings).

Carl Crawford is hoping for a quick return after undergoing surgery last week on his right middle knuckle, according to the Tampa Tribune. The star outfielder said, "I'm going to try my best to get back as soon as possible. I don't know how the rehab is going to go, I don't know how it's going to heal, but I'm definitely hoping for the best and I'm going to do what I can to get back on the field."

Our View: He is scheduled to begin therapy by the end of the week. He wants to return, but there is doubt he will be able to do so. Tampa Bay currently holds a 4.5 game lead ahead of Boston in the AL East.

Our View: Walrond failed to make a positive impact with the Phillies during his brief stint, as he allowed five earned runs, eight hits, and eight walks over 6.1 innings of relief.

Pedro Feliz has been activated from the DL following his bout with lower-back inflammation, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Les Walrond was demoted to Triple-A Lehigh as the adjoining move. Our View: Feliz could hold favorable fantasy value down the stretch in deeper NL-only leagues (assuming he can stay healthy), as he hit 12 homers and 46 RBI prior to landing on the DL.

Zack Greinke allowed five runs (one earned) on six hits over five innings in Thursday's 10-3 loss to the Indians at Progressive Field, with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View: Greinke falls to 9-9, and is 2-4 over his last seven starts. He still has a decent 3.86 ERA and would have more wins if not for poor run support in Kansas City.

Our View: Sizemore reaches a new season-high with 29 homers, and is on the verge of joining the 30/30 club for the first time in his career (he has 31 stolen bases).

Carl Pavano, who is trying to bounce back from right elbow surgery, has been chosen for Saturday's start against Baltimore, according to the AP. Our View: Pavano is worth taking a flier on in deeper AL-only leagues. He will be a risky option, but could also prove to be a pleasant surprise.

Toronto has acquired infielder Jose Bautista from Pittsburgh for a player to be named, according to the AP.

Our View: The 27-year-old hit .242 over 314 at-bats with the Pirates this season, with 12 homers and 44 RBI. Scott Rolen has been hindered by his shoulder injury and Bautista was added for depth.

Josh Beckett is slated to throw a side session Friday, which is expected to give the Red Sox a better idea as to when he can return to the rotation, according to the Boston Herald. Beckett remains scheduled to pitch on Tuesday in New York, though there are hurdles to clear between now and then. Manager Terry Francona said, "The one thing we haven’t done is we haven’t let him throw. If he’s not ready, we won’t pitch him. We’ll just back him up again and I told him that." Beckett added, "There’s no real change. I probably won’t know anything until I throw."

Our View: While Francona indicated that some of the numbness or “tingling” in Beckett’s right hand has subsided, both Francona and Beckett acknowledged the biggest test will come when Beckett attempts to throw. The Sox have ruled out any major problems, saying the ailment was not related to circulatory issues or an aneurysm. One possible source of the problem is the ulnar nerve, the same nerve that runs through the funny bone and can cause a tingling sensation when aggravated.
Burres candidate for Tuesday Thursday 8/21, 1:09 PM CT
Brian Burres is a top candidate to start Tuesday against the White Sox, according to the Baltimore Sun. The team will need a starter, since Dennis Sarfate was demoted to the bullpen.

Our View: Burres was 7-7 with Baltimore this season, with a weak 5.64 ERA and 1.64 WHIP. He should not be considered if handed Tuesday's start against the AL Central-leading White Sox.

Mitch Maier has been placed on the 15-day DL after suffering multiple facial fractures when he was hit by a pitch against Cleveland, according to the AP. In an adjoining move, the Royals activated Joey Gathright from the 15-day DL and recalled him from his injury rehab assignment at Triple-A Omaha.

Our View: This is disappointing for the Royals, as Maier was hitting well with a .339 average over 56 at-bats.

Kason Gabbard is continuing his rehab from season-ending elbow surgery, and believes he will be ready for the start of the 2009 campaign, according to the Star-Telegram.

Our View: Gabbard struggled this season due to injuries, but posted a solid 6-1 record in 2007, with a 1.34 WHIP. He could bounce back favorably next season if healthy.

Our View: He continues to battle a quad injury and has also been forced out of the lineup over the past week with a sinus issue and back stiffness. He went 2-for-3 with a homer Wednesday against Detroit. He will remain an injury risk the rest of the way, but should remain active in lineups.

Hank Blalock is on pace to return to the Rangers' lineup Friday after playing in the third game of a rehab assignment for Double-A Frisco on Wednesday, according to the Star-Telegram.

Our View: As previously stated, Blalock is expected to work at first base with Chris Davis moving to third. Blalock had two hits in each of the first two games of his rehab stint, and is worth fantasy consideration in deeper leagues when he returns.

David Murphy did some jogging Wednesday for the first time since spraining his knee, according to the Star-Telegram. He reported no pain after his session and said, "I’m getting to the point where I’m getting closer to experimenting with sprinting. Our View: He could return to the Rangers in early September. He is a candidate for the AL Rookie of the Year award with a .275 average, 15 homers, 74 RBI, 64 runs scored, and seven stolen bases.

Our View: He will report to Triple-A Pawtucket, and eventually get called up to work as the No. 3 catcher behind Jason Varitek and Kevin Cash. Alexi Casilla has been activated from the 15-day DL following his recovery from a torn ligament in his right thumb, according to the Star Tribune. He went 4-for-7 in two games during his rehab stint with Single-A Beloit. To make room on the roster, Minnesota sent Brian Bass to Triple-A Rochester.

Our View: Casilla should be ready to pencil into fantasy lineups for the next fantasy week.

J.R. House has been sent down to Triple-A Round Rock, according to the Houston Chronicle. He was moved to make room for Jose Castillo on the roster.

Our View: House has good power but did not get a chance to display it with only three at-bats during his stint with the Astros.

Greg Smith is approaching a new career-high for innings pitched, but is feeling good, according to the SF Chronicle. Pitching coach Kurt Young said, "I think the stuff we do in between starts has allowed him to get to this point, and his arm is feeling good. He's comfortable for this time of year."

Our View: Smith may be feeling good, but he is still winless in his last six starts, with an average of 3.3 walks per outing.

Luis Castillo continues his rehab assignment to heal his left hip flexor, and in a game on Wednesday, he went 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, according to Mets.com.

Our View: Castillo has lost a lot of his speed, which had been his best asset for fantasy owners. He remains a decent option in NL-only leagues, but not mixed league formats.
