Players placed on the bereavement list can't pass through waivers. According to Foxsports.com Fuentes isn't eligible to come off the list until Friday and that will be too late for Fuentes to be traded and eligible for a team's post-season roster.

Our View: The Rockies were asking for a large bounty for Fuentes before the trade deadline and now will hold onto their closer.
Castillo returns Wednesday 8/27, 3:14 PM CT
Luis Castillo is back in the Mets' starting lineup for tonight's game against the Phillies. Castillo will bat second and play at his customary second base.

Figueroa activatedWednesday 8/27, 2:51 PM CT
Reliever Nelson Figueroa has been recalled and will be activated by the Mets before the team's game against the Phillies, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: Figueroa will be activated because the Mets need bullpen help in the worst way, coming off Aaron Heilman's 60-pitch effort on Tuesday. He was previously designated for assignment by the team and has little fantasy value.
Pelfrey will carry the loadWednesday 8/27, 2:47 PM CT
Mike Pelfrey has already thrown 10.1 more innings then he did all of last year but the Mets say they are not going to be able to lighten the load. With fellow starter John Maine on the DL the Mets expect Pelfrey to start at least six more games before the post-season.

Our View: Pelfery has been spectacular in his last two starts going the full nine innings in both and only giving up four runs over the 18-innings.

Duke loses 13th.Wednesday 8/27, 2:03 PM CT

No. 2 overall pick says noWednesday 8/27, 1:47 PM CT
Just when you thought the drama with the No. 2 overall pick of the Pirates, Pedro Alvarez, was over, think again. According to Pirates.com, Alvarez has informed the Pirates that he will not sign the deal they agreed on that would pay him a $6 million signing bonus. The Pirates have now placed Alvarez on the restricted list.

Our View: Alvarez's agent is super-agent Scott Boras, and this is another reason many teams don't like working with Boras clients.
Lincecum rolling.Wednesday 8/27, 1:24 PM CT
If Tim Lincecum wants to continue his push to the NL Cy Young Award he will need to continue his recent success. In his last two starts Lincecum has pitched 15.2 innings, struck out 15 and has lowered his league leading ERA to 2.48.

Our View: Lincecum leads the NL in strikeouts with 200 and ERA with 2.48.

Tonight will be Adam Wainwright's second start since coming off the DL with a sprained middle finger. In his first start Wainwright went six innings, struck out four, gave up one run and got the win against the Braves. If the Cardinals want to stay in the chase for the NL Wild Card they need Wainwright in top form.

Our View: Wainwright is a must start in every fantasy league. He has gone at least five innings in every start this season and has lowered his ERA th 3.04.
Baek struggles in PETCOWednesday 8/27, 1:06 PM CT
Cha Seung Baek takes the mound this afternoon for the Padres in the the finale of a three-game tilt against the first place Diamondbacks. Baek, is an aberration of sorts when compared to the rest of the San Diego starting five. Baek has struggled in spacious PETCO with an 0-8 record and 5.97 ERA.

Our View: Baek is 4-0 with a 3.72 ERA on the road.
Maddux looking to improve.Wednesday 8/27, 1:01 PM CT
In his first start as a Dodger, Greg Maddux didn't have the results he or the Dodgers were hoping for. He took the loss against the Phillies only going 5.2 innings. Tonight Maddux will square off against the Nationals in his second start for the Dodgers.

Our View: Even though Maddux's ERA has climbed above 4.00 it might be worth starting him against the last place Nats.
Johnson has had success against Pads.Wednesday 8/27, 12:45 PM CT
Randy Johnson faces the Padres today, who he has had recent success against. As a team the Padres are only hitting .162 against him in 148 at-bats.

Our View: Johnson should be in every fantasy leagues' lineup. He has lowered his ERA in each of his last seven starts.
Marquis squares up against BucsWednesday 8/27, 12:35 PM CT
The Cubs own a 13-4 record this year against the Pirates and send Jason Marquis to the mound in quest of a three game sweep. Marquis (8-7, 4.76 ERA) is 4-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 11 career games in Pittsburgh.

Our View: Marquis was serviceable in his last start against the Nats, working five scoreless innings before finding a rough spot in the sixth frame, but he was working on eight days rest and look rusty in his effort. Today he's back on regular rest and should find success against the soft Pirates batting order.
Uggla atruggling in RBI departmentWednesday 8/27, 12:17 PM CT
Dan Uggla drove in a a runner on Tuesday that was not himself for the first time since August 10, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. He is hitting just .190 since the All-Star break.

Our View: For whatever reason, it seems as if Uggla's wretched performance at the All-Star Game had a carryover effect. He has just five RBI in August and just one home run. His slugging percentage on the month is only .286. Hopefully, for the sake of fantasy owners, he can break out of his slump and get back to hitting.
Chavez gets recalledWednesday 8/27, 11:56 AM CT
Reliever Jesse Chavez has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and will join the Pirates Wednesday, according to Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View: Chavez had a 2-6 record and 3.80 ERA and should have little impact in fantasy leagues.
Berkman hammers FoggWednesday 8/27, 11:49 AM CT
Though dealing with an achy hamstring, Lance Berkman has remained in the Astros starting lineup, and facing the Reds Josh Fogg on Wednesday could make it feel that much better. Berkman hammers Fogg to the tune of a .429 batting average (15-for-35), with six home runs and six doubles.

Our View: Only three of Berkman's hits have not gone for extra bases against Fogg, leading to a completely absurd slugging percentage of 1.171 and OPS of 1.705 in his career against the righty. Needless to say, Berkman needs to be in starting lineups on all fantasy formats, even if owners sat him due to the hamstring.
Santana has good matchupWednesday 8/27, 11:05 AM CT
Most of the teams Johan Santana has faced do not claim much success off the lefty, and players on the Phillies roster fit that bill. Against the Cy Young winner, Phillies players are hitting a combined .210 in 105 at-bats, with two home runs, two walks and 28 strikeouts.

Our View: The Mets need Santana to continue dominating Phillies hitters after imploding on Tuesday, losing in extra innings after holding a 7-0 lead.
Giles does not hit Johnson wellWednesday 8/27, 10:58 AM CT
Even though Brian Giles is hot, collecting hits in six of his last nine at-bats, that trend could end on Wednesday when he and his Padres teammates face Arizona lefty Randy Johnson. In 32 career at-bats, Giles has just three hits (.094) off the Big Unit, and has struck out 13 times.

Our View: Ugh. It's hard for fantasy owners to sit a guy with a seven-game hitting streak, but if there was ever a time to do it, this might be it. Giles does not show his usual patience at the plate against Johnson either, having drawn just two walks off of him.
Soriano crushes DukeWednesday 8/27, 10:50 AM CT
Alfonso Soriano has a great match-up in Wednesday's game against the Pirates, as he goes up against lefty Zach Duke. In his career, Soriano has obliterated Duke to the tune of a .571 average (12-for-21) with two home runs.

Our View: It would be a good idea to go ahead and double check to make sure Soriano is in your fantasy team's lineup.
Maybin slowed by spiderWednesday 8/27, 9:33 AM CT
Marlins prospect Cameron Maybin has not played for the team's Double-A affiliate for five days due to being bitten by a spider on his face, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View: No word on how long Maybin will remain out, or what kind of spider it was. Hopefully this will not interfere with a potential September call up.
Jones plays game 2,000Wednesday 8/27, 9:02 AM CT
Braves third baseman Chipper Jones played in the 2,000th game of his career on Tuesday, according to ESPN.com. He has played each game of his career for one manager, Bobby Cox, and is the only player ever to do so.

Our View: Jones has arguably had a Hall of Fame career, and has the highest all-time batting average of any switch-hitter. He once again has delighted fantasy owners this season, and currently has a .357 average.
Harang wants Cincinnati ballpark adjustedWednesday 8/27, 8:55 AM CT
Reds pitcher Aaron Harang would like it very much if Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati were made a little bigger, so that pitchers can have a better chance of success, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "All they need to do is take out the first two rows in right and make the wall as high as it is in left. That would make it fair," he said.

Our View: Harang has been battered this season to the tune of a 4-13 record, counting among the biggest disappointments in fantasy baseball. He has given up 26 home runs, and has an ERA of 5.35. A larger ballpark certainly wouldn't hurt things, but it's not the sole reason for Harang's struggles.
Eaton has been awful in minorsWednesday 8/27, 8:35 AM CT
Phillies pitcher Adam Eaton has not been good since being demoted to the minor leagues, with a combined 0-4 record and 7.41 ERA in Single-A and Double-A appearances, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Phillies do expect him to rejoin the squad on September 1, however.

Our View: Eaton has been an unmitigated disaster this season, disappointing the Phillies and fantasy owners alike. He has a 5.80 ERA with just four wins and eight losses.
Moyer will pitch in 2009Wednesday 8/27, 8:32 AM CT
45-year-old Jamie Moyer said he plans to pitch next season, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View: Moyer has pitched very well in 2008, compiling a record of 11-7, with a 3.81 ERA. He also has a WHIP of 1.35, and has a strike out rate of 5.71 batters per nine innings. There's no reason to think he couldn't be of use to fantasy owners again next year.
McLouth could move to leftWednesday 8/27, 8:16 AM CT
Nate McLouth could be moved from center field to left field in upcoming seasons, if Pirates prospect Andrew McCutchen makes it to the big league club, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: McLouth does not have a single error this season, but he does not have the best range, and McCutchen is supposedly a superior defensive player. This should not affect fantasy owners, though, as most leagues are not position-specific.
Spilborghs to be activatedWednesday 8/27, 7:59 AM CT
Ryan Spilborghs is coming along fine from his oblique strain and will be put on the team's roster by September 1, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: Spilborghs has had a solid season, but he is used in a backup role, limiting any fantasy value.
Fuentes put on waiversWednesday 8/27, 7:57 AM CT
Rockies closer Brian Fuentes and outfielder Willy Taveras were placed on waivers as the team tries to gauge the interest level in them, according to the Denver Post. Anyone who claims him can then try to work out a deal with Denver.

Our View: Teams have until August 31 to put players on their squads who will be part of their postseason rosters, so if it gets to September 1 and Fuentes is still a member of the Rockies, he will continue to accrue saves for fantasy teams the remainder of the year.
Lowry not likely to returnWednesday 8/27, 7:54 AM CT
Giants hurler Noah Lowry's chances of returning to the Giants this season are minimal, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Lowry had forearm surgery and has not pitched at all in 2008. He will continue his rehab and probably throw during instructional leagues in the fall before making his way to spring training in 2009.
Rasmus won't be called upWednesday 8/27, 7:43 AM CT
Cardinals outfield prospect Colby Rasmus will not be among the players called up when rosters expand in September, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He hasn't earned it," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said.

Our View: Rasmus suffered from a sprained knee in July, but he has not had a good year in Triple-A, so he won't be on the big league team. Fantasy owners will just have to wait until next year.
Carpenter not close to returningWednesday 8/27, 7:40 AM CT
Chris Carpenter is still throwing, but he is not yet close to returning, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. About his outfield throws, Carpenter said, "Nothing hurt, but it wasn't where it needed to be."

Our View: Those hoping to get Carp back for their final push in fantasy leagues may have to wait until mid-September.
Webb fails to reach 20-win plateauWednesday 8/27, 12:06 AM CT
Brandon Webb had a hiccup Tuesday, as he gave up six runs on nine hits and a walk over just 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Padres.

Our View: Webb failed to reach the 20-win plateau, but he's still the favorite for the NL Cy Young.
