Lillibridge, Parr coming upSunday 8/31, 11:33 PM CT
Infielder Brent Lillibridge is one of five Braves who know they will be coming up on Monday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Catcher Corky Miller and pitchers Charlie Morton, Jeff Ridgway, and James Parr are the others.

Our View: Parr, 22, is the most interesting name. He is 13-7 with a 3.52 ERA and 125 strikeouts over 150.2 minor league innings. We don't suggest picking him up, but you should keep an eye on him if he gets a few starts.
Kent scheduled to Tuesday surgerySunday 8/31, 11:25 PM CT
Jeff Kent will undergo left knee surgery on Tuesday, and the severity of his injury (or injuries) won't be known until the operation, the Los Angeles Times reports. The veteran second baseman has a torn meniscus, but the worry is that he has more serious damage.

Our View: We should know by the end of Tuesday if Kent will have a shot to return this season or if his career may be over.
Lowe improves to 11-11Sunday 8/31, 11:14 PM CT
Derek Lowe tossed six shutout innings against the Diamondbacks on Sunday night and evened his record at 11-11. He allowed four hits, walked one, and struck out two.

Our View: Outside of one disastrous outing in St. Louis on August 6, Lowe has been pretty darn good since mid-May. Fantasy owners should continue to lean on him.
Ethier has solid nightSunday 8/31, 11:11 PM CT
Andre Ethier went 2-for-5 with a double, homer, two runs, and two RBI in Sunday's win over the Diamondbacks. He wrapped up August at .301-7-13-19 over 23 games.

Our View: Ethier has had an up-and-down season, posting good numbers in April, July and August but slumping in May and June. A strong finish in September will end up saying a lot about his 2009 value.
Webb roughed up againSunday 8/31, 11:07 PM CT
Brandon Webb was rocked by the Dodgers on Sunday night. He allowed eight hits and eight runs (six earned) over 3.1 innings. Webb hurt himself by walking five and giving up two homers.

Our View: That's back-to-back awful outings for the Cy Young contender. We're not ready to panic.
Casto, five others coming upSunday 8/31, 8:55 PM CT
Kory Casto is among the players who will come up when the Nationals expand their roster on Monday, the Washington Post notes. Shortstop Alberto Gonzalez, outfielder Roger Bernadina, and pitchers Mike Hinkley, Shairon Martis, and Levale Speigner will also move up.

Our View: The Nationals have one of the least exciting call-up lists in the league. There's no fantasy value here, and we can only hope that the 21-year-old Martis gets a chance to start a couple games late in the year.
Anderson to be activatedSunday 8/31, 8:29 PM CT
Marlon Anderson will be activated from the DL on Monday, the New York Daily News confirms. He has been out since August 1 due to a strained left hamstring.

Our View: Anderson is a solid, veteran bench player for a contending team. He is not, however, a good fantasy addition.
Young to start MondaySunday 8/31, 7:40 PM CT
Chris Young will come off the disabled list and start for the Padres on Monday, MLB.com reports. He has been out since August 10 due to a strained right forearm.

Our View: No matter what happens in September, this will go down as a disappointing season for Young. Of course, taking a line drive off the face shouldn't be held against him too much. If he looks decent in the final month, Young should still have good value heading into 2009.
Reyes, Rincon coming upSunday 8/31, 7:37 PM CT
The Mets will add relievers Al Reyes and Ricardo Rincon when the roster expand on Monday, the New York Post reports.

Our View: Nothing like young, fresh blood, huh? Reyes and Rincon are both 38, and this news tells you how worried the Mets are about their bullpen.
Hoffpauir coming back upSunday 8/31, 7:35 PM CT
The Cubs will add first baseman Micah Hoffpauir, catcher Koyie Hill, pitcher Michael Wuertz, and third baseman Casey McGehee to the roster on Monday, MLB.com confirms.

Our View: No surprises here. Hoffpauir hit .362-25-100 over 71 games for Triple-A Iowa this year, and we'd be excited if he wasn't blocked by Derrek Lee.
Antonelli, LeBlanc coming upSunday 8/31, 7:29 PM CT
The Padres will call up second baseman Matt Antonelli and pitcher Wade LeBlanc on Monday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports,

Our View: Antonelli and LeBlanc were the Padres No. 2 and 4 prospects heading into 2008. Neither player has performed very well at Triple-A, although both Antonelli (.290) and LeBlanc (3.55 ERA) showed better stuff this August. Fantasy owners shouldn't get too excited.
Iguchi, Tomko to be releasedSunday 8/31, 7:25 PM CT
The Padres will release second baseman Tadahito Iguchi and pitcher Brett Tomko on Monday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Our View: Neither Iguchi nor Tomko should be on fantasy teams at this point. The Padres will be better served by using youngsters.
Lieber to be activated on MondaySunday 8/31, 6:57 PM CT
Jon Lieber will come off the DL when the major league rosters expand on Monday, the AP reports. He has been out since July 10 due to a strained right foot.

Our View: Lieber will likely return to the bullpen, where he has had a successful year. He won't have any fantasy value in that role, though.
Rodriguez provides the offenseSunday 8/31, 6:07 PM CT
Luis Rodriguez went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI in the Padres 2-1 win over the Rockies on Sunday. The infielder is 16-for-40 (.400) over his last nine games.

Our View: Don't be fooled by Rodriguez's recent success. He shouldn't be an everyday starter in the majors or counted on by fantasy teams.
Peavy strikes out 13Sunday 8/31, 6:01 PM CT
Jake Peavy struck out 13 batters over eight shutout innings against the Rockies on Sunday. It was his highest single-game strikeout total of the year. Peavy held the Rockies to five hits and walked two. Unfortunately, he took a no-decision.

Our View: Peavy went 1-3 over six starts in August despite a 2.77 ERA. Nice support, huh? He remains a fantasy ace despite the efforts of his teammates.
Gamel leads list of call-upsSunday 8/31, 5:09 PM CT
Third baseman Mat Gamel will move up to the big leagues on Monday. The Brewers will also bring up shortstop Alcides Escobar, catcher Angel Salome, first baseman Brad Nelson, pitchers Mitch Stetter, Tim Dillard and Mark DiFelice, infielder Joe Dillon, outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr., and catcher Vinny Rottino, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.

Our View: Gamel is the most interesting name on this list, which includes some other nice prospects. Bill Hall and Craig Counsell don't exactly scare opposing pitchers with their work at third base, and Gamel pounded the ball at Double-A this year. We're not sure how much time the Brewers will give him, but we're hoping Mat gets a shot to play regularly.
Soto closes big AugustSunday 8/31, 4:40 PM CT
Geovany Soto went 3-for-4 with a run against the Phillies on Sunday. He hit .355 with three homers, 21 RBI, and 17 runs in 24 games this August.

Our View: Soto's bat slowed down in June and July, and it was nice to see him have a big August. It is his first full year in the majors, and it looks like he'll be a top-five fantasy catcher for many seasons to come.
Werth powers Phils over CubsSunday 8/31, 4:37 PM CT
Jayson Werth went 2-for-4 with a double, homer, and three RBI in Sunday's 5-3 win over the Cubs. The outfielder wrapped up August with a line of .313-6-15-16 over 29 games.

Our View: Werth is having a career year at the plate, which is due in large part to him staying generally healthy for the first time. He has the tools to be a decent fantasy player if he could ever log 150 games. We're not sure that will ever happen, though.
Wilson injures fingerSunday 8/31, 4:32 PM CT
Jack Wilson left Sunday's game against the Brewers in the ninth inning due to a contusion of his right index finger, the Ticker reports. Luis Rivas took his place.

Our View: Ah, those tricky finger contusions. Wilson has had a rough year, especially on the injury front. It will be interesting to see if the Pirates give more time to a youngster like Brian Bixler this September.
Eckstein traded to ArizonaSunday 8/31, 4:29 PM CT
The Diamondbacks acquired shortstop David Eckstein from the Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon, the AP reports. The AL club received minor league right-hander Chad Beck in return.

Our View: Eckstein is primarily a shortstop, but he has appeared six times at second base this year and will need to get more comfortable with that position. The D'Backs are without Orlando Hudson, and Eckstein could become part of a committee at second. He's not someone that NL fantasy owners should be crazy about.
Wellemeyer sharp in lossSunday 8/31, 4:20 PM CT
Todd Wellemeyer took a tough loss on Sunday. He held the Astros to four hits and one run over seven innings, and his teammates were unable to score. Wellemeyer sunk to 11-6. He went 3-2 with a 2.58 ERA over six starts in August.

Our View: Wellemeyer continues to have a solid season and is a decent back-end option for fantasy owners in mixed leagues. Dave Duncan has worked wonders here.
Sabathia blanks the PiratesSunday 8/31, 4:13 PM CT
CC Sabathia tossed a one-hit shutout against the Pirates on Sunday. He walked three and struck out 11. Sabathia is 9-0 since coming over from the Indians and has tossed six complete games in his 11 NL starts.

Our View: Can a guy spend only three months in the NL and still win the Cy Young? Sabathia clearly loves the Senior Circuit. His fantasy value is soaring right now, and it will remain high if he sticks in the NL next year.
Guzman continues to rollSunday 8/31, 3:55 PM CT
Cristian Guzman collected two hits in five at-bats in the Nationals 8-4 win over the Braves. He also scored a run and drove one in.

Our View: Guzman has bee hot in August, hitting .338 on the month, and will continue to give fantasy owners a good shot of batting average.
Johnson hitlessSunday 8/31, 3:53 PM CT
Kelly Johnson continued his funk in the Braves 8-4 loss to the Nationals by going 0-for-4 with a strikeout.

Our View: Johnson is now hitting .231 since July 1, and fantasy owners would be better served by trying to find someone else at this point.
Balester allows four runsSunday 8/31, 3:50 PM CT
Washington Nationals pitcher Collin Balester went seven innings for his squad, giving up four earned runs and striking out five, but getting a no-decision in the team's 8-4 win over Atlanta.

Our View: Balester is an average pitcher who won't offer fantasy owners much, unless they are in deep NL-only leagues.
Jurrjens gets no decisionSunday 8/31, 3:48 PM CT
Jair Jurrjens threw an average game for the Braves, allowing three runs in six innings to Washington, though he did strike out seven in the Braves 8-4 loss.

Our View: Jurrjens has had a good season for Atlanta, but has struggled mightily in August. However, it is possible that this performance will be a steppingstone to success the rest of the way. Or at least that's what fantasy owners hope.
Gonzalez goes 3-for-4Sunday 8/31, 3:31 PM CT
Marlins outfielder Luis Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI, but it was not enough as the Marlins lost to the Mets, 6-2.

Our View: Gonzalez cannot help fantasy owners much anymore, as he has hit just seven home runs and knocked home 42 runners on the year.
Wright gets three hitsSunday 8/31, 3:29 PM CT
David Wright helped lead the Mets to a 6-2 win over Florida by going 3-for-5 with a home run.

Our View: Wright's MVP caliber season continues, and he had now hit home runs in each of his last two games.
Olsen bombedSunday 8/31, 3:27 PM CT
Marlins pitcher Scott Olsen has had better games than the one he threw on Sunday in his team's 6-2 loss to New York. Olsen went 6.1 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits, including three home runs.

Our View: Olsen gave up at least four runs in four different starts in August, and is not throwing well enough right now that fantasy owners should trust him. Olsen has a 5.81 ERA since July 4.
Martinez throws wellSunday 8/31, 3:23 PM CT
Pedro Martinez picked up his fifth win of the year by going six innings and surrendering two earned runs on seven hits while striking out four in the Mets 6-2 win over the Marlins.

Our View: Martinez offered fantasy owners a 3.85 ERA in August, with 33 strikeouts in 42.1 innings.
Rodriguez leaves gameSunday 8/31, 3:17 PM CT
Houston hurler Wandy Rodriguez had to leave the game against the Cardinals in the sixth inning after he apparently injured his back, according to The Sports Network.

Our View: Rodriguez had been excellent in the game, shutting the Cardinals down until he was forced to leave.
Eckstein contributes two hitsSunday 8/31, 3:10 PM CT
Even amid rumors that he would be traded today, Blue Jays shortstop David Eckstein batted second and went 2-for-4 with one run scored in the Blue Jays 6-2 win over New York.

Our View: Eckstein could be headed to his former stomping grounds in Anaheim, but a number of other teams have also expressed interest. He must be traded by the end of the day or he would not be eligible for the postseason.
Sandoval collects two hitsSunday 8/31, 2:53 PM CT
The Giants lost to the Reds 9-3, but it was not the fault of catcher Pablo Sandoval, who went 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Our View: Sandoval now has a batting average of .393, and rapped a hit in all but two games since he has been called up. In fact, Sandoval has had multiple hits in eight of the 15 games he has played in. If that doesn't make for a great fantasy player at catcher, then what does?
Votto on base five timesSunday 8/31, 2:49 PM CT
Joey Votto had a big day in the Reds win over San Francisco, reaching base five times as he went 4-for-4 with a walk and four RBI.

Our View: Votto ended August hitting .382, but with just two home runs. He's been a solid player all year for fantasy owners, but no doubt they would like to see a few more home runs from him. He has just three since June 21.
Cain has poor outingSunday 8/31, 2:46 PM CT
Matt Cain did not pitch well for San Francisco, going only five innings and walking five while surrendering five earned runs in the Giants 9-3 loss to the Reds.

Our View: Cain had thrown fairly well in August, and his ERA is still a respectable 3.69, but his lack of wins and relative wildness are beginning to hurt. He walked at least four batters in every August outing except one.
Arroyo sharp againSunday 8/31, 2:43 PM CT
Bronson Arroyo threw another quality game for Cincinnati, as they downed the Giants, 9-3. Arroyo went seven innings and allowed two earned runs while striking out five.

Our View: Arroyo had a great August, compiling four wins and an ERA of 2.63. He should be able to help fantasy owners in September, even if he does fall off a little bit.
Phelps gets startSunday 8/31, 2:14 PM CT
Right-handed hitter Josh Phelps got the start for the Cardinals in left field, replacing lefty Rick Ankiel, who is nursing a sore abdomen, according to StLCardinals.com.

Our View: Phelps bashed 31 home runs in the minor leagues, but he won't see enough regular playing time to contribute to fantasy squads.
McPherson could be recalledSunday 8/31, 1:17 PM CT
Dallas McPherson could be one of the players Florida calls up on Monday when rosters expand, according to FloridaMarlins.com.

Our View: McPherson has hit 42 home runs in the minor leagues, more than anybody else, and could provide some pop off the bench for the Marlins.
Miller to come off DLSunday 8/31, 1:15 PM CT
Marlins lefty Andrew Miller will be activated from the disabled list on Monday, according to FloridaMarlins.com.

Our View: Miller has been a bit disappointing this season, carrying an ERA of 5.63 and a record of 5-9. However, he is averaging more than seven strikeouts per nine innings, and figures to only get better. Eventually, he'll be a pitcher fantasy owners will want on their squad.
Reyes will be recalledSunday 8/31, 12:40 PM CT
Argenis Reyes will be one of a number of minor league players the Mets will call up on Monday, according to New York Newsday. Also being recalled are catcher Gustavo Molina, infielder Ramon Martinez, and pitchers Al Reyes, Ricardo Rincon, Carlos Muniz and Bobby Parnell.

Our View: Reyes did okay in his previous stint with the Mets, hitting .258 with one home run. He is not worthy of fantasy consideration at this point, however.
Niese will startSunday 8/31, 12:38 PM CT
Pitcher Jon Niese will make the start for the Mets on Tuesday, according to New York Newsday.

Our View: Niese is 21-years-old, and has been pitching at Triple-A, where he was 11-8 with a 3.13 ERA and 144 strikeouts in 164 innings. He is certainly someone to consider in NL-only leagues.
Zambrano scratched from startSunday 8/31, 12:05 PM CT
Cubs hurler Carlos Zambrano was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday to rest what has been described as a tired arm, according to the AP.

Our View: Zambrano has seen diminished velocity and poor results recently, so Sean Marshall got the start instead. No word on exactly how long Big Z will be sidelined.
Jones battling elbow tendinitisSunday 8/31, 12:00 PM CT
Chipper Jones has another malady to add to the list he's been battling this season: right elbow tendinitis, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View: The number of injuries Jones has played through has made his great season all the more remarkable.
Escobar did not play Sunday 8/31, 11:58 AM CT
Yunel Escobar did not play on Saturday after hitting into three double plays, as he was simply given a night off to rest, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View: Escobar has been a decent player this season, but his fantasy impact has been minimal outside of NL-only leagues.
Gerut still recoveringSunday 8/31, 11:45 AM CT
It will be at least two or three more days before Padres outfielder Jody Gerut can play, as he is still recovering from a sprained finger, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View: Gerut has been a real find for San Diego and fantasy owners, surprising everyone to the tune of a batting average near .300 to go with 14 home runs.
Castillo recalledSunday 8/31, 11:13 AM CT
Wilkin Castillo, who was sent to the Reds from Arizona in the Adam Dunn trade, has been called up in order to take the roster spot of pitcher Ramon Ramirez, who was demoted, according to Reds.com.

Our View: Castillo can be used in multiple positions all over field, including catcher, but he was hitting only .248 in Triple-A and is not someone to consider for fantasy leagues.
Gwynn to be called upSunday 8/31, 10:58 AM CT
Tony Gwynn will be called up along with several others when rosters expand September 1, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Also being recalled are relievers Mitch Stetter, Tim Dillard, Mark DiFelice, catcher Vinny Rottino, along with infielders Joe Dillon, Mat Gamel and Brad Nelson.

Our View: Gwynn hit .200 in just 35 at-bats with the big club this season. He and the others called up offer no fantasy value.
DeWitt will be second basemanSunday 8/31, 10:41 AM CT
Blake DeWitt will be the second baseman for the Dodgers in the absence of Jeff Kent, who has been playing with torn cartilage in his knee, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Our View: DeWitt had a very good beginning of the season before leveling off. Should he resume his previous level, he could be of real help to fantasy owners, but as it is should only be used in NL-only formats.
Kent's career could be overSunday 8/31, 10:39 AM CT
Jeff Kent has been playing with torn cartilage in his left knee, and there is speculation that results from his MRI could reveal much more damage, possibly ending his career, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Our View: If his career is over, it's been a highly productive one, especially for fantasy owners, as they could count on his production at second base year after year.
Taveras does not want to goSunday 8/31, 10:34 AM CT
Colorado outfielder Willy Taveras is not interested in going to another team, even though he was claimed off waivers recently, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: Taveras would add speed to any team he goes to, but he would likely go to a contender who needs that speed off the bench, so his fantasy value would take a hit.
Helton takes batting practiceSunday 8/31, 10:30 AM CT
Rockies first baseman Todd Helton took batting practice on the field as he attempts to return to the team after suffering from a bad back, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: Helton's days as a fantasy stalwart have long since passed, and it remains doubtful that he will come back this season as he has suffered multiple setbacks.
Burrell strugglingSunday 8/31, 10:04 AM CT
Phillies outfielder Pat Burrell is really struggling, and with an 0-for-4 performance on Saturday, is just 3-for-29 with one RBI in his past six contests, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View: Burrell's average stands at .258, but he does have 30 home runs, 76 RBI and an OBP of .376, so fantasy owners should be able to withstand a small slump.
Beltran pummels OlsenSunday 8/31, 9:38 AM CT
Facing off against Marlins lefty Scott Olsen is usually a good thing for Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran, who belts Olsen to the tune of a .458 average (11-for-24), with two home runs, three doubles, eight RBI, five walks and a slugging percentage of .833.

Our View: Beltran has hit .305 with five home runs in August, so fantasy owners would love to see him cap the month off with a big day.
Ramirez struggles against PedroSunday 8/31, 9:34 AM CT
Hanley Ramirez faces off against the Mets and hurler Pedro Martinez on Sunday, which is not necessarily a great thing for Ramirez. Against Pedro, the young shortstop is just 2-for-12 (.167) with three strikeouts.

Our View: Under no circumstance should you remove Ramirez from your fantasy lineup, but don't be shocked if he does not have a big day.
Villanueva angry with PujolsSunday 8/31, 8:30 AM CT
Brewers reliever Carlos Villanueva is upset with Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols, who did not appreciate it when Villanueva apparently made some gestures towards the Cardinals dugout and let Villanueva know it, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "I think sometimes he thinks he’s bigger than the game. He’s not. ... I used to have a lot of respect for Pujols. Now, I’ve lost some of that respect. I don’t know why he would say those things about me. They’re not true. I have respect for the game," Villanueva said.

Our View: This is hilarious coming from a guy with a career record of 14-13 and an ERA over 4.00, while Pujols is a future Hall of Fame player.
Hill set for surgerySunday 8/31, 8:21 AM CT
Nationals pitcher Shawn Hill will have arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow in a clean-up procedure, according to the Washington Times.

Our View: Obviously, he will not be back this season, but fantasy owners have ignored him anyway, as he sports a WHIP of 1.75 and ERA of nearly 6.00.
Dusty Baker defends Bruce BochySunday 8/31, 7:49 AM CT
Reds manager Dusty Baker defended Giants manager Bruce Bochy, wh0 has been criticized for allowing pitcher Tim Lincecum to throw 132 pitches in his last start, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "I know Bruce knows what he's doing. I know (pitching coach Dave) Righetti knows what he's doing. A lot of times it differs from day to day. One day 100 pitches may be too much and the next time 132 may be just enough," Baker said.

Our View: We'll go ahead and agree with the masses that there really is no reason for Lincecum to throw that many pitches at this point in the season. Many fantasy players are familiar with Baker's use of Mark Prior and Kerry Wood, often leaving them on the mound despite high pitch counts.
Kinney to returnSunday 8/31, 7:39 AM CT
Cardinals reliever Josh Kinney has not pitched in the big leagues since 2006 after having Tommy John surgery, but he will finally make his return to the big leagues on Tuesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Kinney was a big part of the Cardinals run to the World Series in 2006, and he will try to help the team's struggling bullpen with depth.
Ankiel remains injuredSunday 8/31, 7:36 AM CT
Rick Ankiel is still dealing with abdominal pain that will likely hamper him the remainder of the season, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "All I've got to do is get a hint that (playing him) is not in his best interest and I'll shut him down," manager Tony LaRussa said.

Our View: Be wary of what LaRussa said if Ankiel is a member of your fantasy team. Not only that, but he is in a deep funk, having gone five for his last 40.
Barmes generates three RBI in loss Sunday 8/31, 12:19 AM CT
Clint Barmes went 3-for-5 with three RBI in Saturday's 9-4 loss to the Padres. He recorded two singles and a triple.

Our View: Barmes has three hits in two straight games, and is batting .382 (13-for-34) over his last seven contests.
Gonzalez chips in RBI in win Sunday 8/31, 12:14 AM CT
Adrian Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 9-4 win over the Rockies. His hit was a single.

Our View: Gonzalez has registered 94 RBI and 81 runs scored for the season, but hasn't homered in 18 straight games.
Melhuse recalled Sunday 8/31, 12:07 AM CT
Adam Melhuse has been recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs, according to the AP. Catcher Yorvit Torrealba has been placed on the 15-day DL due to his knee injury as the adjoining move.

Our View: Chris Iannetta should see most of the action at catcher, and Melhuse is not worth targeting. He only hit .200 over 20 at-bats this season.
Torrealba placed on DL Sunday 8/31, 12:03 AM CT
Yorvit Torrealba has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a torn meniscus in his left knee, according to the AP. Catcher Adam Melhuse has been recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs as the corresponding move.

Our View: Torrealba may opt for season-ending surgery, and does not believe the injury is going to get better. Torrealba won't be missed much by Colorado as the club will be in good shape with Chris Iannetta at catcher. He won't be missed by fantasy owners either, with a .246 batting average and only six homers over 70 games.
