Ethier goes 5-for-5 against D-BacksFriday 9/5, 11:56 PM CT
Andre Ethier went 5-for-5 in a big game against the Diamondbacks on Friday night. He tallied his 20th home run to go with five RBI. It was a career-high for RBI in a game.

Our View: He is now 11-for-15 in four September games and has generally hit well since Manny Ramirez's arrival. He is worth a look in deep leagues and also holds some value in keeper leagues.
Putz picks up 11th saveFriday 9/5, 11:51 PM CT
J.J. Putz earned his 11th save of the season on Friday night. With Jason Giambi at the plate and representing the tieing run, he got the slugger to pop out to thrid base. Putz allowed half of the Yankees two hits on the night.

Our View: Putz was dominant last season but has been very average in 39 games this year. He has had various arm problems but it appears his job as closer remains safe as his primary competition, Brandon Morrow, appears to have successfully converted to a starter.
Morrow just misses no-hitterFriday 9/5, 11:45 PM CT
Brandon Morrow threw 7.2 innings of no-hit ball in his major debut as a starter. The converted reliever gave up an RBI double to Wilson Betemit with two outs in the eighth and was removed promptly afterwards. He did walk three while striking out eight.

Our View: The converted reliever entered the game with 10 saves and a 1.47 ERA this season. Remarkably, he managed to lower that mark to 1.42. He threw 106 pitches, which was probably more than the coaches would have liked him to throw. It will interesting to see how his arm recovers for his next start. Regardless, the 24-year-old right-hander is talented and worth taking a shot on.
Martinez reaches base four timesFriday 9/5, 11:21 PM CT
Victor Martinez finally got the nod behind the plate against the Royals. He had not caught since June because of elbow surgery. Martinez was sharp at the plate with two singles, driving in a run in the fifth inning. He finished 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.

Our View: This was by far his best performance since returning from the DL six games ago. It's still too early to tell how effective he will be going forward.
Jimenez picks up his 12th winFriday 9/5, 11:14 PM CT
Ubaldo Jimenez allowed three runs and five hits, struck out six, hit two batters and walked one in six-plus innings. It was just his second win in a month.

Our View: As usual he was a little wild. Regardless, hopefully this win puts to rest the poor performances he strung together in August.
Uribe homers twice against AngelsFriday 9/5, 11:09 PM CT
Juan Uribe hit a pair of two-run home runs off of Darren Oliver on Friday. The shots came in the second and third innings.

Our View: It was a memorable night in a forgettable season for Uribe. Prior to Friday he had just five home runs and was hitting just .237.
Giles has four hits including home runFriday 9/5, 11:05 PM CT
Brian Giles had four hits including an eighth-inning solo home run that tied the score 2-2 against the Brewers on Friday. It was just his 11th home run of the season.

Our View: The big night brings his average back over .300. Giles has had a rather mediocre year by his standards. His numbers would no doubt be more impressive if he played on just about any other team or in any other ballpark.
Sabathia allows one run in no-decisionFriday 9/5, 11:01 PM CT
CC Sabathia struck out nine in seven innings in a no-decision appearance against the Padres on Friday night. He gave up five hits and just one run. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a two-out RBI. Milwaukee won 3-2 in 11 innings.

Our View: Sabathia continues to dominate the NL as he has not yet lost in his new league after 12 games.
Hardy hits game-winnerFriday 9/5, 10:56 PM CT
J.J. Hardy had a walk-off RBI single in the 11th winning against the Padres on Friday night to end the Brewers' four-game losing streak. It was Hardy's fourth straight game with an RBI.

Our View: Hardy has upped his batting average to .289 after batting .242 as recently as mid-June. He is slugging just under .500.
Looper rebounds from rough outingFriday 9/5, 10:51 PM CT
Braden Looper threw 7.1 shutout innings against the Marlins on Friday but the save was blown in the ninth. He walked none, gave up four hits and struck out six.

Our View: This was great news for Looper who was coming off his worst outing of the season against Houston last week when he gave up 11 hits and eight runs in 4.1 innings.
Perez blows second straight saveFriday 9/5, 10:48 PM CT
Chris Perez blew his second consecutive save on Friday win he gave up a ninth inning home run to Mike Jacobs. It was the Cardinals league-leading 30th blown save of the season.

Our View: Perez appeared to be the answer when he started closing games in August but this might be cause for some concern. Unfortunately, the Cardinals don't have too many pitchers that they can turn to, although Chris Carpenter will be pitching out of the bullpen for the remainder of the season.
Buerhle wins his 12thFriday 9/5, 10:44 PM CT
Mark Buehrle reeled off six shutout innings against the Angels on Friday night. He struck out seven while earning his 12th win of the season.

Our View: This win was big for Buerhle as he had been tagged for too many hits and runs in several of his last starts. With Carlos Quentin going down because of a broken wrist, the White Sox will need their pitching to be more effective down the stretch.
Crisp drives in threeFriday 9/5, 10:40 PM CT
Coco Crisp went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for Boston while hitting out of the nine-hole. He is hitting .323 in the spot in the batting order.

Our View: Crisp is 21-for-46 his last 13 games and continues to start more often than not. His value continues to inch up.
Lowell returns with a blastFriday 9/5, 10:34 PM CT
Mike Lowell came off the disabled list to go 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs, helping Boston beat the Texas Rangers 8-1 on Friday night. He had been suffering from a strained oblique muscle. He homered in his first at-bat since Aug. 12. The third baseman added a two-run single in the fourth and an RBI double in the ninth.

Our View: Lowell, like so many other Red Sox players, seems to get hot at the right times and look for him to havea good September. If he was dropped in your league because of his injury, hurry up and grab him.
Beckett shines in his returnFriday 9/5, 10:32 PM CT
Josh Beckett struck out seven over five scoreless innings in his first start in nearly three weeks. It was his 12th win of the season.

Our View: He struck out four of the first eight batters he faced. The right-hander was on a limited pitch count, throwing 49 of his 80 pitches for strikes without walking a batter and allowing four singles. He looks like he should return to the big-game ace form that he has come to be known for.
Morneau = clutchFriday 9/5, 10:29 PM CT
Justin Morneau connected for his second grand slam of the season on Friday night off of Armando Galarraga to blow open a 2-1 game with the Tigers.

Our View: Clutch. Morneau is hitting an uncanny .438 with the bases loaded this season (16 at bats) with 25 RBI. With RISP (149 at bats) he is hitting nearly .380.
Galarraga struggles with control in lossFriday 9/5, 10:23 PM CT
Armando Galarraga yielded six runs in six innings to the Twins on Friday. He only gave up three hits while walking a season-high six batters and striking out four.

Our View: Galarraga's ERA remains an impressive 3.39. He has been the best pitcher on a weak Detroit staff this season.
Liriano wins fifth straight decisionFriday 9/5, 10:17 PM CT
Francisco Liriano had a season-high nine strikeouts in seven innings while improving to 5-0 since returning to the Twins lineup last month. He did give up two homers, though, both to Marcus Thames before leaving in the eighth with no outs.

Our View: In his seven starts since being called back up, Liriano has surrendered only eight runs. It appears he is back to form and may be becoming one of the most dominant fantasy players in the game for a long time.
Thames homers twice off LirianoFriday 9/5, 10:14 PM CT
Marcus Thames hit his 23rd and 24th home runs of the season on Friday against the Twins. Both shots came off of Francisco Liriano and were the only two runs the Tigers scored all night.

Our View: Thames has 24 home runs in 277 at bats. He is your typical all-or-nothing hitter. He has just 64 hits on the season to go with a .287 OBP and 84 strikeouts.
Jurrjens ends winless streakFriday 9/5, 10:11 PM CT
Jair Jurrjens picked up his first win since August 9th on Friday night against the Nationals. It took him 98 pitches to get through five innings, after which he was pulled. He gave up six hits and one run while walking three and striking out six.

Our View: This should help him snap out of his funk. He was 1-3 with a 5.73 ERA in August. Jurrjens is a better pitcher than that and he should return to form in September.
Johnson enjoying a strong SeptemberFriday 9/5, 10:07 PM CT
Kelly Johnson continued his hot September with three more hits on Friday night. He recorded two runs and two RBI. In five September games, he is hitting .571 with six runs and eight RBI.

Our View: Get 'em while he's hot. Johnson is a good hitter but has had a very average year. In May, he hit .355 but has not hit over .250 in any other month. With a healthy Chipper Jones and Brian McCann behind him, he should finish out the year on a strong note.
Votto connects for his 18th home runFriday 9/5, 9:50 PM CT
Joey Votto hit his 18th home run of the season on Friday night. He added a double, two runs and three RBI to his line by the end of the 10-2 whupping of the Cubs.

Our View: Votto is the real deal. After Adam Dunn was traded, he took over the cleanup spot in the order and has hit .333 while there. Throw in his small ballpark and the fact that he will be hitting between Brandon Phillips nad Jay Bruce for years, and it becomes clear that Votto holds substantial keeper league value.
Harden should make next startFriday 9/5, 9:46 PM CT
Rich Harden threw Friday without experiencing any problems according to the AP. He missed his last start with discomfort in his arm.

Our View: It appears Harden will be available to go on Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals. He has a 1.50 ERA in 54 innings with the Cubs this season.
Arroyo picks up another win.Friday 9/5, 9:42 PM CT
Bronson Arroyo threw an impressive 6.1 innings against the Cubs on Friday night. He allowed just one run on four hits while striking out six.

Our View: Arroyo has been a different pitcher since the All-Star break. He has gone 7-3 with a 3.30 ERA in the timespan. He had a 2.61 ERA in August.
Bruce hits first grand slamFriday 9/5, 9:30 PM CT
Jay Bruce hit his first career grand slam on Friday night off of Jon Lieber. He was 2-for-3 with four RBI and a walk in the Reds 10-2 victory over the Cubs. He also had two errors giving him nine on the season.

Our View: Bruce had a miserable August in which he hit just .227 but has rebounded thus far in September. He is hitting .400 in the young month.
Huff misses game Friday 9/5, 9:25 PM CT
Aubrey Huff missed Friday night's game against Oakland due to the birth of his daughter. He should return to the lineup on Saturday.

Our View: Huff is the reigning AL Player of the Week. He has been a pleasant surprise for fantasy owners in 2008 as he is hitting .313 with 30 homers and 98 RBI.
Lilly lit up in CincyFriday 9/5, 9:22 PM CT
Ted Lilly lasted just two innings on Friday night against the Reds. He was tagged for five runs on four hits and three walks.

Our View: It was Lilly's shortest outing of the year and could not have come at a worse time for a Cubs' pitching staff that is dealing with an ailing Carlos Zambrano and Rich Harden.
Bass makes his Orioles debutFriday 9/5, 9:18 PM CT
After being acquired earlier in the day, Brian Bass pitched 1.2 innings for the Orioles on Friday. He surrendered two runs on two hits and two walks.

Our View: There's nothing special about Bass. He's your typical middle reliever on a below average ball team who holds no fantasy value.
Davis connects for a grand slamFriday 9/5, 9:15 PM CT
After three Baltimore pitchers combined to issue six walks and hit a batter, the fourth pitcher of the inning, Randor Bierd, yielded Rajai Davis' first career grand slam. He had entered earlier in the eighth as a pinch runner for Jack Cust.

Our View: It was Davis' third home run in 173 at-bats this season. Like most of Oakland's offense, Davis does not provide much fantasy value aside from his 25 stolen bases.
Francoeur leaves game after being hitFriday 9/5, 9:12 PM CT
Jeff Francoeur left Friday night's game after being hit by a pitch on his hand.

Our View: We will update the once-fantasy-relevant Francouer's status as more is known. In fairness, he has recorded 63 RBI and 59 runs this season...despite hitting .231.
Reyes leaves game with a sore elbowFriday 9/5, 9:08 PM CT
Anthony Reyes left tonight's game after three innings with a sore right elbow according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Reyes, working with a 2-0 lead, seemed to be cruising, but didn't come out for the fourth inning on a cool night at Kauffman Stadium.

Our View: Its unclear if he will miss his next start. He had been doing excellent with his new team prior to this injury.
Longoria could return soonFriday 9/5, 9:03 PM CT
The AP reports that Evan Longoria will take 20 to 40 swings on Saturday. Longoria has been out since Aug. 11 with a fractured wrist and the Rays want him to take two or three days of regular batting practice before activating him off the DL.

Our View: Manager Joe Maddon has said that he will not be rushed back, but the Rays cannot allow the Red Sox to make up any more ground. Don't be surprised if Longoria is in the lineup after this weekend.
Sonnanstine takes the lossFriday 9/5, 9:00 PM CT
Andy Sonnanstine lost for the first time in seven starts, allowing four runs and five hits in six innings against the Blue Jays on Friday.

Our View: Sonnanstine had been enjoying a nice run but ran into a red hot Roy Halladay on Friday.
Pelfrey suffers loss despite pitching wellFriday 9/5, 8:56 PM CT
Mike Pelfrey allowed just four hits over seven innings against the Phillies on Friday but left with a loss. Phillies third baseman Greg Dobbs connected for a two-out, two-run homer off of him in the seventh - the only earned runs Pelfrey allowed.

Our View: Despite the loss, Pelfrey did not pitch bad. He continues to have an excellent second half and September was his best month of 2007.
Myers shuts out MetsFriday 9/5, 8:51 PM CT
Brett Myers improved to 6-1 since the All-Star break with an excellent performance in New York on Friday. He lasted eight innings and shutout the Mets' usually productive lineup. He struck out 10 while allowing just three hits.

Our View: Myers has clealy found his stride since the break. He has not allowed a run in three of his past four starts, yielding only two runs in his last 31 innings. Expect a solid September from him.
Halladay wins his 18thFriday 9/5, 8:46 PM CT
Roy Halladay picked up his 18th win of the season on Friday against the Rays. He threw seven innings, struck out seven and surrendered one earned run. He had been 1-3 with a 4.82 ERA in four starts against the Rays this season. Halladay, who is 10-3 in his past 13 starts, has never lost to the same team four times in one season.

Our View: Yet another excellent performance from Halladay who will be in the Cy Young conversation at the end of the season. He lowered his ERA to 2.64.
Rios homers twice in winFriday 9/5, 8:44 PM CT
Alex Rios was 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI on Friday night against the Rays.

Our View: Rios is having an excellent week and is beginning to flash his power again. In his past four games, he has 10 hits, three homers and a triple.
Moseley leaves earlyFriday 9/5, 8:22 PM CT
In his first start since being recalled from the minors, Dustin Moseley was knocked out of the game in the second inning by the White Sox. He retired just four of the 12 batters he faced, allowing four runs on six hits including a two-run home run by Juan Uribe.

Our View: Don't expect him to stick around for another start. He was filling Jared Weaver's spot in the rotation as Weaver cut his fingers in his last appearance. Weaver should be back in time to make his next start.
Ozuna joins DodgersFriday 9/5, 8:18 PM CT
Pablo Ozuna joined the Dodgers 40-man roster on Friday.

Our View: Ozuna is not a fantasy factor. In 82 ABs this season he is hitting .256.
Westbrook underwent successful surgeryFriday 9/5, 8:03 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Jake Westbrook had successful arthroscopic surgery on his right hip in Nashville, Tenn., on Friday. He is still recovering from Tommy John surgery that he underwent earlier in the summer.

Our View: You won't be hearing much from Westbrook any time soon. He won't pitch again until midseason of 2009 at the earliest.
Pineiro moves to the penFriday 9/5, 8:00 PM CT
Joel Pineiro will will move to the bullpen, as the Cardinals shift to a four-man rotation over the next week according to MLB.com. Pineiro, who last started on Monday in Arizona, will not start again until Sept. 12, the opener of the Cards' series against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Our View: That will make one start in 26 days for Pineiro, who was bumped to the 'pen when the Cards went to a four-man rotation in the second half of August. A run of off-days in the second half has allowed for some creativity with the starting five.
Duchscherer shut down for the seasonFriday 9/5, 7:57 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer has been shut down for the season according to MLB.com. Duchscherer has been on the disabled list with a strained right hip since Aug. 19 -- the same hip the 30-year-old had surgery on last July. "He's not," Geren said matter-of-factly when asked when Duchscherer would throw again. "He's shut down. He's going to go to see [Dr. Byrd, who] did his surgery last year, to get reevaluated."

Our View: Duchscherer had been enjoying an All-Star season prior to the injury. He had a 2.54 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in 2008. Hopefully he will not require another surgery.
Byrd injured in the firstFriday 9/5, 7:51 PM CT
The Boston Globe reports that Marlon Byrd was apparently hurt in the first inning of Friday night's game while diving for Dustin Pedroia's eventual double. Brandon Boggs replaced him in the lineup.

Our View: Its unclear how severe the injury is at this time but we will update as more information becomes available. Byrd had been hot recently and was named the August player of the month for the Rangers.
Gordon takes groundersFriday 9/5, 7:46 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Alex Gordon participated in infield drills on Friday as he continues to recover from a torn hip flexor. He has been out since August 23. "The MRI update from yesterday shows there is healing going on," manager Trey Hillman said. "To what degree, it's tough to tell, but there is healing, and he was froggy to get out and do something. So we just had controlled ground balls. No hitting yet, though."

Our View: When and if he'll return this season is uncertain. 2008 has been disappointing for Gordon and the Royals.
Morton may be doneFriday 9/5, 7:41 PM CT
Charlie Morton may be done for the season. MLB.com reports that the right-hander has been shut down for at least 10 days after complaining of back discomfort.

Our View: The rookie hurler claims he does not know what caused the persistent back discomfort that he's felt for nearly two months but one theory is simply being a part of the Braves' rotation. In 15 starts, he has accumulated a 6.32 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP.
Murphy may be throughFriday 9/5, 7:37 PM CT
David Murphy, sidelined with a sprained ligament in his knee, may be in danger of being shut down for the remainder of the season. Although he has participated in batting practice, doctors have not cleared him to do any running.

Our View: Murphy was a pleasant surprise in the fantasy world this season, but it appears the end may be near. Earlier in the day Ian Kinsler opted for season-ending surgery. Murphy is not in need of surgery, only rest.
Zambrano encouraged by MRIFriday 9/5, 7:13 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Carlos Zambrano said Friday he was encouraged by the MRI results that showed he has tendinitis in his shoulder, The Cubs pitcher wanted to also correct reports saying he had missed his scheduled MRI exam. "Thank God it was nothing serious," Zambrano said of the test results.

Our View: It's possible he could start next weekend against Houston but don't count on the Cubs rushing back their ace so close to playoff time. Still, this is good news for Cubs fans. Fantasy owners should still get a few more solid outings from him and we will monitor the rehab closely.
Martinez will start SaturdayFriday 9/5, 6:38 PM CT
The New York Post reports that Pedro Martinez told reporters today that he feels healthy and will start as scheduled Saturday against the Phillies. Martinez had been excused from the final three games of the road trip this week so he could work out at Shea Stadium with personal trainer Chris Correnti, in part because he had trouble getting loose in his start last weekend in Miami.

Our View: Martinez had a 3.85 ERA in August with 33 strikeouts in 42.1 innings. He should be a reliable play the rest of the way.
Youkilis dealing with personal matterFriday 9/5, 6:25 PM CT
The Boston Herald reports that Kevin Youkilis' back is ok, but that he will miss Friday's game due to a personal matter. All indications are that he will rejoin the club tomorrow.

Our View: This is good news for Youkilis owners. Hopefully he will be ready to start again tomorrow night.
Hill has surgeryFriday 9/5, 6:19 PM CT
Shawn Hill had bone spurs removed from his elbow on Friday according to the Washington Post. It was thought that he might need a second Tommy John surgery so this is good news for Hill fans.

Our View: Hill will be ready for spring training in 2009 but won't likely be an effective fantasy player. This season he was 1-5 with a 5.83 ERA.
Gray joins the A'sFriday 9/5, 6:15 PM CT
The AP reports that the Oakland Athletics recalled right-hander Jeff Gray from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday to provide help to an overworked bullpen.

Our View: Gray has served as a closer in the minors but will be used in middle relief with the A's. His numbers are not exceptional and they don't figure to get any better in the pros.
Casey returns from DLFriday 9/5, 5:30 PM CT
Sean Casey was activated from the 15-day DL on Friday according to the Providence Journal. However, despite first baseman Kevin Youkilis' unavailability, Casey is not starting. He will be available to pinch hit. He was on the disabled list due to a bad neck.

Our View: If Youkilis' injury (back) is serious, Casey would be the likely choice to start at first base. He is hitting .345 in 59 games this season. Mark Kotsay has started at the position recently.
Drew to take batting practiceFriday 9/5, 5:19 PM CT
J.D. Drew will take batting practice and shag flyballs on Friday. He has not played since August 17th due to a herniated disc. The Providence Journal reports that he hopes to be back in three to four days.

Our View: Not so fast. Drew has been known to drag out his recovery time and there's no reason to expect him back so soon. However, we expect his standard production once he does return to the lineup. It's unlikely he would ever play at anything less than 100%.
Beckett will start Friday nightFriday 9/5, 4:57 PM CT
The AP reports that Josh Beckett has been activated from the DL and will start Friday's game at Texas. He is only expected to throw 60-75 pitches. He has been sidelined since August 17 with right shoulder inflammation.

Our View: 2008 has been very average for the Boston ace, however we all know he tends to pitch better the bigger the games. With the Red Sox breathing down Tampa Bay's collective neck, expect Becket to start lowering his 4.34 ERA soon.
Mathis' season is overFriday 9/5, 4:51 PM CT
Doug Mathis will undergo right shoulder surgery to have his bursa sac removed according to the Star-Telegram. He should begin throwing again in two months.

Our View: Mathis had made four starts for the big league club, but was very ineffective. He ends his season with a 6.85 ERA nad a 2.28 WHIP.
Youkilis not in the lineupFriday 9/5, 4:40 PM CT
Kevin Youkilis is not in the Red Sox lineup on Friday for the third straight game. He has a sore back but is not expected to land the disabled list.

Our View: Mark Kotsay is starting in his place. Youk has been a fantasy force this season hitting .315 with 94 RBI.
Kotsay starting at firstFriday 9/5, 4:35 PM CT
Mark Kotsay is starting at first base for the injured Kevin Youkilis (back) against the Rangers on Friday. He is also hitting clean up. He has played first just one other time this season.

Our View: Kotsay certainly does not have the pop to hit fourth, but he has done well thus far in six appearances for the Red Sox. He is hitting .333 since moving to Boston.
Lowell is backFriday 9/5, 4:32 PM CT
Mike Lowell is making his first appearance since August 12th on Friday against the Rangers. He had been out with a strained oblique.

Our View: If Lowell was dropped in your league because of his injury, he is a good pickup for September. He is penciled in to hit sixth for the Sox which should give him plenty of RBI opportunities.
Durham to start FridayFriday 9/5, 4:16 PM CT
Ray Durham is in the starting lineup on Friday night against the Padres. It's his first start since spraining his shoulder on August 26th.

Our View: Durham should see plenty of starts against right-handers for the remainder of the month. He is hitting .301 off of them this season.
Niese to start TuesdayFriday 9/5, 4:04 PM CT
Jonathon Niese will make his second career start on Tuesday against the Nationals according to MetsBlog.com. He lasted just three innings last Tuesday and surrendered five runs.

Our View: Niese has major league potential and he has a fairly light hitting opponent coming up. Still, it's too much to expect him to have any fantasy impact this season.
Iguchi agrees to deal with Phillies Friday 9/5, 3:14 PM CT
Tadahito Iguchi, who was recently released by the Padres, has reportedly agreed to a deal with the Phillies, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View: He is expected to join his new club prior to Saturday's game against the Mets. He should not be considered for fantasy rosters, and will be ineligible for the postseason should the Phillies win the NL East or clinch the wildcard.
Wise activated Friday 9/5, 2:50 PM CT
Dewayne Wise has been activated from the DL, according to the AP. The 30-year-old hurler had been sidelined since August 21 with a strained left adductor.

Our View: Wise fared well with a .288 average (and two homers) over 66 at-bats with the Sox this season and should see action with Carlos Quentin potentially lost for the rest of the season due to a broken wrist. Wise also notced six stolen bases, and is worth a look in deeper AL-only leagues.
Branyan not expected back? Friday 9/5, 2:45 PM CT
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel believes that the signing of Mike Lamb could be an indication that Russell Branyan isn't expected back due to his right oblique strain.

Our View: It could also signal that Mat Gamel is not in the plans to see significant playing time at third base, with Craig Counsell and Lamb likely to see most of the action.
Quentin to undergo wrist surgery Friday 9/5, 2:35 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Carlos Quentin is going to undergo surgery on his broken wrist Monday and could miss the remainder of the season, according to the AP.

Our View: A screw will be inserted into the wrist, and he will be re-evaluated in two to three weeks. This is a critical blow to the AL Central contending Sox, as well as fantasy owners, as Quentin leads the AL with 36 homers.
Quentin's season in jeopardy?Friday 9/5, 1:11 PM CT
Carlos Quentin's season could be in jeopardy after the team received MRI results on his left forearm and wrist Friday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: It's not clear yet exactly what is wrong with Quentin, but obviously this would be a massive blow to the White Sox and fantasy owners alike. We'll keep you updated on his status.
Palmisano designated for assignment Friday 9/5, 1:02 PM CT
Lou Palmisano has been designated for assignment by the Brewers, according to the AP. The team acquired veteran infielder Mike Lamb off waivers from Minnesota as the corresponding move.

Our View: Palmisano held no fantasy value prior to his designation. He is not a power hitter and has not challenged a .300 average past the Single-A level.
Brewers acquire Lamb Friday 9/5, 12:57 PM CT
Mike Lamb has been acquired by the Brewers after clearing waivers with Minnesota, according to the AP. Catcher Lou Palmisano has been designated for assignment to make room on the roster.

Our View: He was added to the contending Brewers' bench for the stretch run, but the 32-year-old is not eligible to play in the postseason. He will see action at third base, but does not merit fantasy attention.
Guillen to miss trip to Minnesota Friday 9/5, 12:26 PM CT
Carlos Guillen will miss the trip to Minnesota this weekend while dealing with a pinched nerve, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View: He won't play this weekend, and will instead continue baseball activities in Detroit. It is also uncertain if he will be ready to return for the start of the new week on Monday.
Bass dealt to Baltimore Friday 9/5, 12:14 PM CT
Brian Bass has been dealt from the Twins to the Orioles in exchange for a player to be named later, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View: Bass spent most of the season with the Twins, but held a 4.87 ERA and 1.55 WHIP over 44 innings of relief, and was demoted to the minors in August. He didn't figure into Minnesota's plans for 2009, and Baltimore feels he will hold some value in their organization.
Belliard may be done for the season Friday 9/5, 11:09 AM CT
Ronnie Belliard may be done for the remainder of the season after sustaining a strained right groin in Thursday's game against Atlanta, according to the AP.

Our View: He will undergo an MRI today, but the team is not expecting him back this season.
Saito throws pen session Friday 9/5, 11:00 AM CT
Takashi Saito, who is recovering from a right elbow sprain, throw a 32-pitch bullpen session Thursday, according to the LA Times. He did not report any pain or discomfort following the session.

Our View: He is expected to return from the DL when eligible September 12, but it remains uncertain if he will reclaim his closer's role right away.
Penny throws bullpen session Friday 9/5, 10:56 AM CT
Brad Penny, who is recovering from right shoulder inflammation, threw a bullpen session Thursday and is optimistic he can return to the Dodgers this season as a reliever, according to the LA Times.

Our View: He has a shot to return, but may not be able to make a solid enough impact to merit keeping him on fantasy rosters as a reliever.
Cabrera recalled Friday 9/5, 10:51 AM CT
Melky Cabrera has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: He was recalled due to the injury concerns of outfielder Bobby Abreu (left wrist). Abreu's status for the Yankees' weekend series against Seattle remains in question. Cabrera could see some action, but does not merit fantasy consideration in anything but deeper AL-only leagues, as he struggled with New York this season.
Gregg plays catch Friday 9/5, 10:43 AM CT
Kevin Gregg, who is recovering from a sore left knee, played catch on Tuesday, according to the Palm Beach Post. Pitching coach Mark Wiley indicated that his session was a success.

Our View: He will now progress to the mound, prior to determining when he can return as the Marlins' closer.
Maier participates before game Friday 9/5, 10:24 AM CT
Mitch Maier, who is recovering from facial fractures, participated in on-field activities prior to Thursday's game against Cleveland, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View: He has a good shot to return to the Royals' lineup as soon as next weekend. Maier is worth waiting for, as he holds a .339 average over 56 at-bats.
Dickerson making solid impact Friday 9/5, 10:04 AM CT
Chris Dickerson has been making a solid impact with the Reds since his August 12 promotion from Triple-A Louisville, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. He went 2-for-3 with a double Thursday, and has now hit safely in seven straight games. 16 of his 26 hits have went for extra bases as well, with eight doubles, two triples, and six homers.

Our View: Dickerson should remain active in lineups while he is hot, and is proving to be among the most valuable waiver wire pick-ups during the stretch run of the season.
Lamb clears waivers Friday 9/5, 8:51 AM CT
Mike Lamb has cleared waivers and has been unconditionally released by the Twins, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View: He can sign with another club, but the Twins are responsible for the remainder of his two-year deal, worth roughly $3.8 million.
Young back in lineup Friday 9/5, 8:48 AM CT
Delmon Young returned to the Twins' lineup Thursday after missing Wednesday due to a sore right ankle, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View: He will be able to continue playing, but will have to favor his ankle for a while. That decreases his fantasy value as he has actually been more productive in the speed department (14 steals) than the power department (only eight homers) this season.
Gomez's playing time decreasing Friday 9/5, 8:43 AM CT
Carlos Gomez's playing time has been decreasing as manager Ron Gardenhire wants to keep his best bats in the lineup during a tight AL Central race against the White Sox, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View: Gomez didn't start Thursday and only started one of the last four games. Denard Span started in center field in place of him. Gomez started Tuesday, but went 0-for-2 with a pair of strikeouts against AJ Burnett of Toronto, and is hitless in his last three games. He will continue to be phased out of the lineup until he gets back on track.

The swelling on Jack Wilson's bruised right index finger went down significantly Thursday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Wilson said, "It's a stupid injury because it could have been avoided. I've done it before but never this bad."

Our View: He was injured while fielding a grounder. Assuming the swelling doesn't get worse, Wilson can likely return to the Pirates' lineup tonight.
Sanchez rests sore arm Friday 9/5, 7:57 AM CT
Freddy Sanchez sat out of the starting lineup Thursday as a precaution after being hit by a pitch on the underside of his right forearm near the heel of his hand Wednesday night, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He said, "Usually, the day after is when it's the sorest."

Our View: He did make an appearance as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning, and should be ready to play tonight.
Andrews impressed with Ohlendorf Friday 9/5, 7:52 AM CT
Pitching coach Jeff Andrews was impressed with Ross Ohlendorf's performance in his first major league start Wednesday against Cincinnati, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Andrews said, "I thought he did really well. He used his strength, which is his fastball. He made them speed up their bats. He attacked inside on both sides of the plate. He used his breaking ball ahead on the count well. He knew where to go with the breaking ball. His changeup is very usable."

Our View: He allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings in a no decision against Cincinnati, and his next start is set for Tuesday in Houston. He is worth targeting in NL-only leagues if available.
Pence tied in outfield assists Friday 9/5, 7:35 AM CT
Hunter Pence could be a sleeper for a Gold Glove, as he is tied for the major league lead with 15 outfield assists and is yet to make an error, according to the Houston Chronicle. Pence said, "It’s something I like to focus on and take some pride in (playing good defense). The award would be an honor. I don’t go out there like I deserve a Gold Glove or this and that. I try to go out there and play the game the right way and help my team win."

Our View: Pence is also making a strong impact with his bat right now as well, as he is riding a six-game hitting streak, with five multi-hit efforts over the span.
Astros pleased with Newhan Friday 9/5, 7:30 AM CT
Manager Cecil Cooper and the Astros' staff have been pleased with infielder David Newhan, and the club is looking for ways to get him more at-bats, according to the Houston Chronicle. Newhan has started seven of the last nine games at second base, but Cooper is considering moving him to the outfield for the first time this year. Cooper stated, "He’s making plays and getting hits. He’s done a good job. A lot of it is getting the opportunity. He’s getting to play more. He’s making some eyes go open a little bit, and we’ll keep giving him a chance. He can run, he’s a good defender and can steal some bases."

Our View: Newman especially impressed the team when he stole home on Wednesday against the Cubs, and is worth picking up in larger NL-only leagues for depth.
