NEWSBREAKERS NASCAR
Smith top Richmond rookieSaturday 5/3, 11:30 PM CT
Regan Smith won Rookie of the Race honors for the fifth time this season with his 21st-place finish in the Crown Royal Dan Lowry 400.

Our View: Sam Hornish Jr. was not far behind with a 23rd-place finish. Meanwhile Michael McDowell and Patrick Carpentier both experienced crash damage and finished in the 40s.
Hamlin dominates RichmondSaturday 5/3, 10:44 PM CT
Denny Hamlin had the dominant car, leading 381 laps of the Crown Royal Dan Lowry 400 until a slow leak in his right front tire ruined his night.

Our View: He ultimately had the tire go completely down, and when he stopped on the track, NASCAR penalized him for intentionally bringing out the caution. He finished four laps off the pace in 24th.
Busch finishes second at RichmondSaturday 5/3, 10:38 PM CT
With two laps to go in the Crown Royal Dan Lowry 400, Kyle Busch appeared to get loose and when he tried to catch his car, the turned Dale Earnhardt Jr. into the wall.

Our View: Junior fans will find it hard to accept—and Busch probably could have given the No. 88 a little more room—but it was 'just one of those racing things.' Busch might be the hardest charger on the track at the moment.
Bowyer wins a wild one at RichmondSaturday 5/3, 10:33 PM CT
Clint Bowyer was in the right place to take the lead on lap 398 of the Crown Royal Dan Lowry 400, when the leaders Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kyle Busch got together, sending the No. 88 into the wall.

Our View: Busch held on to stay in second, and then Bowyer had to overcome a green-white-checkered finish.
J Gordon to the backSaturday 5/3, 6:10 PM CT
Jeff Gordon will have to go to the back of the field to start the Crown Royal Dan Lowry 400 after changing his ignition.

Our View: He didn't have far to go, but this is still another blow to his hopes of climbing into the top 12 in points.
Big Brown wins Kentucky DerbySaturday 5/3, 5:55 PM CT
Big Brown won the Kentucky Derby, and there is another Big Brown competitor on the track Saturday night. David Reutimann wants to sweep the weekend.

Our View: Is this a good omen for David Reutimann? Only time will tell.
Gilliland sponsor extendsSaturday 5/3, 4:23 PM CT
David Gilliland and the No. 38 team will have FreeCreditReport.com on the car for a few more races in 2008. The number of extra races was not released.

Our View: Both Yates teams have run better than expected at the start of the year given their sponsorship problems and Gilliland enters Richmond with three consecutive top-15s.
Labonte to stay putSaturday 5/3, 3:49 PM CT
It looks like Bobby Labonte will stay put at Petty Enterprises, according to ESPN citing unnamed sources. The contract is supposedly signed, but the team is waiting on a sponsorship announcement to accompany it.

Our View: Until it's announced officially, one has to wonder how solid this is, but it's encouraging to have Labonte around for a few more years.
Keselowski to interview for No. 70Saturday 5/3, 3:22 PM CT
Could Brad Keselowski make the jump to the Cup series this year? He is rumored to be part of the two-day test at Lowe's on Monday / Tuesday.

Our View: Keselowski drives for JR/Hendrick Motorsports, and since Gene Haas gets his engines from that organization, this could be a pretty good fit.
