NEWSBREAKERS NASCAR
Blaney wins dirt NASCAR nightThursday 7/24, 10:01 PM CT
Dave Blaney held off several NASCAR drivers in the M&M's NASCAR Night of Stars Modified race at Ken Schrader's I-55 Speedway in Pevely, Mo. on Wednesday night.

Our View: Brendan Gaughan and Tony Stewart battled for the runner-up position on this bull ring. It must have been nice to let off some steam before the pressures of Indy.
N'Wide: Toyota disappointed in NASCAR decisionThursday 7/24, 5:47 PM CT
Toyota Racing Development President Lee White expressed disappointment in NASCAR's mandate to alter the spacer on their engine, which is intended to reduce horsepower. Toyota—most notably JGR with Tony Stewart their lion's share—have dominated the second series all year.

Our View: White says the credit for running fast belongs to the teams—not the engines—but at least one of their cars proved to have a significant power advantage in last week's test.
Smith wins short track raceThursday 7/24, 4:24 PM CT
Kevin Harvick wasn't the only driver visiting his roots this past weekend. Regan Smith competed in and won a CarQuest Maritime Late Model sanctioned short track race at Riverside Speedway in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Our View: Smith bettered some of Canada's best short track races, but also his DEI teammate Aric Almirola, who finished seventh in the IWX 250.
Labonte to race PoconoThursday 7/24, 10:11 AM CT
Terry Labonte will sub for Patrick Carpentier at Pocono Raceway in August, allowing the rookie to concentrate on his efforts in the Nationwide race in his native Canada.

Our View: It seems that no one wants to allow Labonte to retire. Pocono is one of his better tracks, however, so he will be a welcome addition to the roster.
N'Wide: Toyota ordered to use fewer horsesWednesday 7/23, 10:19 AM CT
NASCAR has told Toyota teams to use less horsepower at O'Reilly Raceway Park this weekend after David Reutimann's car was found to have a three percent advantage over the other manufacturers in last week's test.

Our View: It's unclear how NASCAR expects them to do this, or how the sanctioning body will police the demand. Moreover, O'Reilly Raceway Park is not a track where horsepower comes into play nearly as much as the unrestricted, intermediate speedways, so look for Toyota dominance to continue.
Harvick wins short track raceTuesday 7/22, 5:06 PM CT
Kevin Harvick won the 35th annual TD Banknorth 250, defeating some of New England's best drivers at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford Maine.

Our View: Any victory builds confidence. Harvick is winless on the Cup circuit and this should help his poise entering Indy.
N'Wide: Bowyer not likely to run fulltime in 2009Tuesday 7/22, 4:11 PM CT
Clint Bowyer has told the media that he is not likely to run full time in the Nationwide series next year.

Our View: That puts a greater emphasis on winning the championship in 2008. so look for Bowyer and the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) team to continue to make a full court press.
Haas Racing trademarks No. 14Tuesday 7/22, 2:32 PM CT
Joe Custer, general manager of Haas-CNC Racing, has applied for a trademark for the No. 14—presumably as a precursor to an announcement that will be Tony Stewart's number next year.

Our View: The No. 14 was made famous by another open wheel / stock car legend, A J Foyt. This would be a fitting tribute.
Labonte back in No. 45 at IndyTuesday 7/22, 1:17 PM CT
Terry Labonte will be back behind the wheel for one more race at the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard as Kyle Petty waits one more week to rejoin the circuit.

Our View: This race is just too important to miss and Labonte's past champion's provisional will ensure that the No. 45 gets into the show.
Sorenson still working on contractTuesday 7/22, 12:33 PM CT
Reed Sorenson is still working on a contract extension with Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR), although he was not able to give a positive response in a press conference this week.

Our View: When asked by fellow driver David Reutimann about how it was going, Sorenson simply replied "Working on it," which is not exactly a glowing report.
