NEWSBREAKERS NASCAR
Raines goes home from Auto ClubFriday 8/29, 7:06 PM CT
Tony Raines was the odd man out in qualification with a speed of 174.376 mph and he is the only driver heading home.

Our View: This is a blow to Stewart-Haas Racing for next year since either Tony Stewart or Ryan Newman will find themselves outside the top 35 at Daytona.
Allmendinger on outside pole at ACFriday 8/29, 7:04 PM CT
A.J. Allmendinger was quick in practice and he gave Jimmie Johnson a little grey hair. He posted the second fastest time at 179.659 mph and rolls off from the outside of the front row.

Our View: Red Bull Racing has been coming on strong in recent weeks and Allmendinger is still looking for the top 35 in owner points.
Johnson on Auto Club poleFriday 8/29, 7:02 PM CT
Jimmie Johnson posted a fast lap in qualification and will lead the field to green on Sunday. His top speed was 180.397 mph.

Our View: Johnson was one of our favorites at the beginning of the week and he's living up to that prediction.
N'Wide: Logano wins Auto Club P1Friday 8/29, 5:31 PM CT
Joey Logano jumped to the top of the speed charts late in the race with a speed of 175.400 mph and ended the afternoon with the fastest lap.

Our View: Just in case anyone believes the kid is not for real, he keeps confirming his strength.
Keselowski says "no" to PenskeFriday 8/29, 5:23 PM CT
In an interview with SPEED TV during Nationwide practice, Brad Keselowski revealed that he said no to an offer to drive one of Roger Penske's cars next year.

Our View: That speaks volumes about how far Penske's program has slipped. With the departure of Ryan Newman next year, the No. 12 could become a poor fantasy value.
N'Wide: Bowyer spins in Auto Club P1Friday 8/29, 4:10 PM CT
Clint Bowyer posted the fastest lap (173.461 mph) early in the first Nationwide Series practice for the Camping World RV Service 300 on his first lap and then spun out on lap two.

Our View: The track is extremely slick and these conditions are nothing like the drivers will face in Saturday's race. The best news, however, is that Bowyer did not hit anything.
Red Bull Racing notably fastFriday 8/29, 3:37 PM CT
"Go-or-go-home" driver A.J. Allmendinger was the third fastest driver on track in practice one with a speed of 178.059 mph; his teammate Brian Vickers was fifth best at 177.773.

Our View: Is a new super-team emerging? Probably not, but these two guys have become strong dark horses on a weekly basis.
Edwards fastest in Auto Club P1Friday 8/29, 3:34 PM CT
Carl Edwards posted the fastest single lap in the first practice session at Auto Club Speedway with a speed of 178.913 mph.

Our View: Edwards' time was set when the track was at its coolest, however, and he points to Jimmie Johnson as being notably fast.
Schrader in No. 96 at Auto ClubWednesday 8/27, 11:55 PM CT
NASCAR.com is reporting that Ken Schrader will race the No. 96 this week instead of Brad Coleman as Hall of Fame Racing relies on experience for the Pepsi 500.

Our View: Coleman is still on the entry list, but look for a change in the coming days. Schrader started seventh and finished 21st last week at Bristol.
Logano's 2008 Cup schedule revealedWednesday 8/27, 9:49 PM CT
Joey Logano's seven-race schedule has been revealed and he will make his debut at Richmond in a Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) Toyota, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: In addition, he will race for JGR at Atlanta and then five of his seven races will be for Hall of Fame Racing at New Hampshire, Kansas, Lowe's, Martinsville and Texas. In these races, he will be fantasy gold.
