NEWSBREAKERS NASCAR
Stewart winless at DarlingtonWednesday 5/7, 6:18 PM CT
Darlington Raceway is one of only four active tracks on which Tony Stewart has not yet won—despite making 15 attempts. His best finish of fourth was recorded in 2001 and 2002.

Our View: The other three tracks on which Stewart is winless are Talladega SuperSpeedway (0 for 19), Auto Club Speedway (0 for 14) and Las Vegas Motor Speedway (0 for 10).
Waltrip regains coolWednesday 5/7, 6:14 PM CT
Michael Waltrip lost his temper for a split second at Richmond following his on-track contact with Casey Mears. He says he's regained his composure, however.

Our View: Racing is made up of split second decisions and after getting wrecked a driver can see red. NASCAR black flagged Waltrip for aggressive driving, but don't look for any lasting effects from the incident.
Eight men in: DarlingtonWednesday 5/7, 6:07 PM CT
In the event qualification is rained out at Darlington, the eight drivers from those outside the top 35 who would make the show are Bill Elliott, Dave Blaney, Johnny Sauter, J.J. Yeley, Sterling Marlin, A.J. Allmendinger, Kyle Petty and Joe Nemechek.

Our View: That would leave Patrick Carpentier and John Andretti as the odd men out.
Update: Sauter replaces SchraderWednesday 5/7, 6:03 PM CT
The entry list for the Dodge Challenger 500 has been updated and Johnny Sauter will apparently replace Ken Schrader in the No. 70 Gene Haas Chevrolet.

Our View: This team may be leaning toward a longer term assignment for Sauter. He was replaced by Jeremy Mayfield at the end of 2007, and perhaps the separation was good for both driver and team. Sometimes you don't know what you had until it's gone.
Allmendinger notably fast at Lowe'sWednesday 5/7, 5:29 PM CT
He didn't win any of the practice sessions at Lowe's, but A.J. Allmendinger was notably fast with the third best time in Tuesday afternoon's session. His top speed was 184.571 mph.

Our View: This sophomore driver continues to become a better value in fantasy games as he gains experience and confidence. Watch him closely in the coming weeks and he will be a dark horse candidate eventually.
McMurray tops Tuesday's testWednesday 5/7, 5:25 PM CT
Jamie McMurray posted the fastest time on Tuesday, with a speed of 185.720 mph.

Our View: That was slower than Elliott Sadler's top speed of 186.245 mph set on Monday. This track is one of the most sensitive on the circuit to weather conditions, and the two-day test gave drivers a chance to practice adjustability.
Vickers fastest in Lowe's test 5Wednesday 5/7, 5:22 PM CT
Brian Vickers got his chance to sit atop the practice sheet in Tuesday's afternoon session. His top speed during the heat of the day was 181.830 mph.

Our View: That was about two miles per hour faster than Kyle Busch's top time from Monday afternoon. Slowly but surely, the teams are starting to figure out the new tire and car combination on this fast track.
Earnhardt fastest in Lowe's test 4Wednesday 5/7, 5:18 PM CT
Dale Earnhardt, Jr was once again fastest in the morning, pacing the fourth practice session on Tuesday morning. His top speed of 182.593 mph bettered Jeff Burton's 182.439.

Our View: As on Monday, only a handful of cars and drivers tested. Johnny Sauter replaced Brad Keselowski in this session to give the team a baseline.
