Army to sponsor Stewart-HaasTuesday 10/7, 3:41 PM CT
According to reports at NASCAR.com, Stewart-Haas Racing will announce on Thursday they have reached an agreement with the US Army to sponsor the No. 39 car driven by Ryan Newman.

Our View: Haas CNC Racing has struggled all season to keep their cars sponsored and now they are fully engaged for the 2009 season. Office Depot and Old Spice will share the duties on Tony Stewart's car.
Crew chief blames at CarpentierMonday 10/6, 9:10 PM CT
Mike Shiplett, crew chief on the No. 10 Gillett-Evernham Motorsports Dodge, lashed out at Patrick Carpentier following that team's failure to qualify, according to reports on the driver's Web site. Moreover, his tirade was done in a semi-public pace in the back of an open hauler.

Our View: This underscores how this team is fraying at the edges and it cannot bode well for their immediate results.
Hamlin released from hospitalMonday 10/6, 3:03 PM CT
Denny Hamlin was kept in a Birmingham hospital overnight for observation after making hard contact with the wall in the Amp Energy 500 at Talladega SuperSpeedway, according to NASCAR.com.

Our View: Hamlin was leading when a tire blew and his 39th-place finish sent him to 12th in the standings. Hamlin's Chase bid is all but over.
Allmendinger in No. 00 at Lowe'sMonday 10/6, 2:43 PM CT
A.J. Allmendinger will pilot Michael Waltrip Racing's No. 00 at Lowe's for the Bank of America 500. He will be required to qualify on time since this car is outside the top 35 in owner points.

Our View: Meanwhile, the driver who will be taking over the No. 84 will attempt to qualify a third Red Bull car that is also outside the top 35. This is a chance for Allmendinger to make a statement.
Amp Energy 500 fourth worst for ChasersSunday 10/5, 6:57 PM CT
Five of the 12 Chase contenders finished outside the top 25, with Jeff Gordon the worst of the group with a 38th-place finish. On average, the 12 Chasers finished 19.8, which made this the fourth worst race in the history of the Chase format.

Our View: Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Burton were the big winners this week as they have now swept the top 10.
Stewart wins Amp Energy 500Sunday 10/5, 5:33 PM CT
Tony Stewart crossed the finish line second, but he was awarded the victory of the Amp Energy 500 since Regan Smith passed him below the yellow line—which is considered out of bounds on the restrictor-plate superspeedways.

Our View: NASCAR did not credit Smith's assertion that he was pushed below the yellow line; Had he stayed above that mark, however, he would have spun Stewart. After Greg Biffle crossed the finish line fourth at Kansas Speedway last year, this is the second time in two years the driver who got to the checkers first failed to win.
Johnson also dropping to the backSunday 10/5, 12:08 PM CT
Jimmie Johnson will also drop to the back of the pack to start the Amp Energy 500 after the crew was forced to inspect the car on Sunday morning.

Our View: It wasn't reported what—if anything—was changed, but this is an impound race and the teams are not allowed to work on the car at all.
Earnhardt, Ragan to the backSunday 10/5, 11:13 AM CT
Dale Earnhardt, Jr and David Ragan will drop to the back of the pack before the Amp Energy 500 since they changed engines.

Our View: That won't make a bit of difference. A driver can come to the front in a hurry on this track.
Carpentier, Hornish go homeSaturday 10/4, 1:44 PM CT
Patrick Carpentier and Sam Hornish Jr. posted the two slowest times among the "go-or-go-home" drivers, and they will be heading home early from the Amp Energy 500.

Our View: That is not much of a surprise as the Dodges have been incredibly slow in qualification on the plate tracks.
Kvapil wins Talladega poleSaturday 10/4, 1:42 PM CT
Doug Yates proved he can turn out as many horses as his famous father Robert. Travis Kvapil won the pole for the Amp Energy 500 with a speed of 187.364 mph.

Our View: Qualification doesn't make a lot of difference on this track, but horsepower is always welcome and Kvapil has set himself up as one of the favorites.
