Garnett rolls Boston forward with Game 5 winWednesday 5/28, 10:58 PM CT
The Celtics found a dominating lead hard to protect in the 4th quarter, but Boston closed the valve on the surge to win 106-102. Celtics forward Kevin Garnett, as usual, led the way with a team-high 33 points, shooting 11-of-17 from the field, 1-of-1 from the three, and 10-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Our View: The Big Ticket came up with seven total rebounds, two assists, and a steal along the way, shooting the ball from all over the floor. However, this may have been the best group effort this team has produced in this series. Now they return to Detroit for Game 6 with dreams of moving to the Finals.
Allen finds his shot for Game 5Wednesday 5/28, 10:54 PM CT
The Celtics found a dominating lead hard to protect in the 4th quarter, letting Detroit make a late charge. However, Boston closed with free-throws to win 106-102. Celtics guard Ray Allen was on top of his game, shooting 9-of-15 from the field, 5-of-6 from the three-point line, and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line to score 29 points.

Our View: The other numbers fail to impress, but this is what Allen brings: Shooting. Now the Celtics are up 3-2 in the series and look to close in Detroit in Game 6.
Billups, Hamilton lead charge, but Pistons fall shortWednesday 5/28, 10:50 PM CT
The Celtics held a dominating lead through most of the game, but Detroit guards Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton brought the Pistons back to make it interesting. However, Boston closed with free-throws to win 106-102. Billups shot 7-of-17 from the field, 3-of-7 from three-point range, and a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line to score 26 points, adding four rebounds, six assists, and two steals to the stat line. Hamilton joined the effort with 25 points of his own, going 8-of-14 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free throw to finish just one rebound shy of Billups (4) and match his assist number (6).

Our View: These two, along with Rasheed Wallace, gave Boston the scare, but the series is now at 3-2 in favor of the Celts.
Allen inactive for CelticsWednesday 5/28, 8:51 PM CT
Celtics guard Tony Allen has been listed as inactive for tonight's Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals after suffering an Achilles tendon injury during pregame warmups, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Allen is a backup, having made little contributing during the playoffs. The team describes the injury as a mild strain.
Noah receives deferred sentence on pot chargeWednesday 5/28, 6:37 PM CT
Chicago center Joakim Noah has accepted a deferred prosecution agreement concerning his recent marijuana possession arrest, resulting in six months' probation and a $200 fine, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Noah was arrested earlier this week in Florida for drinking in public and officers found marijuana in his possession upon the resulting search. As a first-time offender, Noah was eligible for the deferred sentence. If he can avoid legal issues for the next six months, the charge will be dropped.
Scott gets contract extension with HornetsWednesday 5/28, 6:31 PM CT
The New Orleans Hornets have come to terms on a contract extension with coach Byron Scott, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: Terms of the contract were not revealed, though the Network reports the New Orleans Times-Picayune has a source claiming this is a two-year agreement worth approximately $6 million per season. Scott was named this season's NBA Coach of the Year and led the Hornets to a record of 56-26, the best season the franchise has experienced during their 20 seasons in the NBA.
Sund hired as new GMWednesday 5/28, 3:42 PM CT
Rick Sund will become the new general manager of the Hawks after the two sides reached an agreement on Wednesday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The 56-year-old Sund has worked for the Bucks, Mavericks, Sonics and Pistons over the past 34 years.

Our View: The Hawks had an opening after Billy Knight stepped down in early May. Sund wasn't their first option and isn't a sexy pick, but he's an NBA veteran. His first job will be to decide what do with head coach Mike Woodson, whose contract expires on June 30.
Popovich signs extensionWednesday 5/28, 12:54 PM CT
Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich confirmed with the San Antonio Express-News that he has signed a contract extension through the 2011-12 season.

Our View: The Spurs are seen to be an aging dynasty, but this extension should take Pop through the rest of the Tim Duncan era. The big fella will be 36 by the time this extension runs out.
Hinrich could be tradedWednesday 5/28, 12:51 PM CT
The Chicago Bulls may be trying to move Kirk Hinrich this summer, and it may be possible despite a contract that still includes four years and $37.5 million. "There is a need for good point guards and I think a lot of people think Hinrich just needs a change of scenery," one GM informs ESPN.com. "I think the Bulls won't have a hard time moving him."

Our View: It wasn't too long ago that Captain Kirk seemed like a long-term fixture for the Bulls. We agree with the GM that Hinrich would benefit from a move, and the 27-year-old point guard could have a bounce back fantasy campaign if he ends up in a good scenario. Oh, and a Hinrich trade would obviously open up time for that Derrick Rose kid.
Calderon not going anywhereWednesday 5/28, 12:47 PM CT
The Raptors are prepared to match any offer that restricted free agent Jose Calderon receives this summer, ESPN.com reports. Meanwhile, the club may be open to dealing fellow point guard T.J. Ford.

Our View: This news shouldn't surprise anyone, as Calderon out-played Ford in 2007-08. If Ford is moved, Calderon will be free to turn into a solid fantasy guard.
Yao progressing nicelyWednesday 5/28, 11:47 AM CT
Yao Ming informs the Shanghai Daily that he remains on pace to play a couple exhibition games before the Olympic opener on August 10. The center is rehabbing a stress fracture in his left foot. He underwent surgery in March and began running last week. Yao hopes to scrimmage in a couple weeks.

Our View: Our primary concern remains the 2008-09 fantasy season, but it will be good to see Yao in action before next preseason. The center is a star, but injuries will subdue his fantasy value heading into the next NBA campaign.
Noah nets two traffic citationsWednesday 5/28, 10:57 AM CT
Joakim Noah had a more interesting weekend than previously indicated. Along with alcohol and marijuana violations, the big man was issued two traffic citations - one for driving with a suspended license and one for not wearing a seat belt, ESPN.com reports.

Our View: Stay hot, Joakim. At this point, we don't know that any of these issues will cause Noah to miss time in the upcoming 2008-09 season. The Bulls don't currently have a coach to scold the youngster.
