NEWSBREAKERS NBA
Sonics ink Westbrook Friday 7/4, 11:11 PM CT
The Sonics have inked first-round draft pick (fourth overall) Russell Westbrook to a multi-year deal, according to the AP. Exact terms were not disclosed.

Our View: Westbrook was named the Pac-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He should develop into a solid point guard for the Sonics.
Watson undergoes surgery Friday 7/4, 8:02 PM CT
Earl Watson underwent surgery to repair a fractured right thumb, according to the AP. He sustained the injury while playing in a pickup game.

Our View: He is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for the start of next season. Watson averaged career highs in scoring (10.7), assists (6.8), and rebounds (2.9) over 78 games with Seattle in 2007-08.
Cook injures shoulder Friday 7/4, 5:21 PM CT
Daequan Cook has separated his left, non-shooting, shoulder, according to the AP. He won’t be able to participate in the five-games-in-five-days summer league schedule starting Monday in Orlando.

Our View: He will be on the shelf for 2-4 weeks. This is disappointing to the Heat, as they hoped the second-year guard could use a strong summer showing as a springboard into next season.
Duhon signs with KnicksFriday 7/4, 3:48 PM CT
Chris Duhon has agreed to terms on a two-year, $6.5 million deal with the New York Knicks, according to the New York Post. He will challenge for the starting point guard job.

Our View: Management sold him on the fact that he could compete with Stephon Marbury to become the starter at the point. His fantasy value will be high if he can win that battle and play big minutes in Mike D'Antoni's offense.
George gaining lots of interestFriday 7/4, 1:20 PM CT
The Mavericks would like to re-sign Devean George, but there are a number of teams after him, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The paper reported that Phoenix, San Antonio, Minnesota, Cleveland and New Orleans are interested.

Our View: Regardless of where he winds up, it is doubtful he will see enough quality minutes to have value in fantasy basketball.
Lopez finds NBA physicalFriday 7/4, 10:43 AM CT
Brook Lopez is learning that the NBA is a physical league, and he is adjusting to it, according to the New York Post. "Really, the speed of the game, the physicality. You've got to keep the ball up, finish strong," he said.

Our View: With DeSagana Diop now out of the mix, it's possible Lopez will see extended minutes immediately with the Nets. He could be an early surprise in fantasy basketball should he transition quickly.
Love will play in summer leagueFriday 7/4, 10:27 AM CT
Kevin Love will play on the Timberwolves summer league team in Las Vegas, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Our View: This will be a good first chance for fantasy owners to see how Love is progressing. He has a great chance to be a starter for Minnesota next season.
Beasley fractures sternumFriday 7/4, 10:02 AM CT
Michael Beasley has a fractured sternum, according to his ESPN.com blog. "They found a very, very slight fracture of the sternum," he wrote.

Our View: He will be out 3-5 days in order to let it heal. This is not a serious injury and shouldn't affect his fantasy status at all.
Wade not interested in returning to pointFriday 7/4, 10:00 AM CT
Dwyane Wade is not interested in playing the point guard position, and hopes the Heat can acquire somebody to fill that role, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "Do I want to set up the offense every time? No, I don't want to do that," he said.

Our View: If someone else can help set Wade up for shots, it might help him to remain healthy, which would be a boon for the Heat and fantasy owners.
Barea returns to MavericksFriday 7/4, 9:16 AM CT
5-foot-11 Jose Barea will be back with the Dallas Mavericks, and is expected to sign a three-year deal worth around $4.8 million, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Our View: Barea was a good backup at point guard for the Mavs, but he does not register enough minutes to warrant time on a fantasy team.
Ellis interested in KnicksFriday 7/4, 8:31 AM CT
Free agent Monta Ellis is interested in joining the New York Knicks, according to New York Newsday. A restricted free agent, he is said to be seeking around $10 million per year.

Our View: Ellis would do great things in Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni's system. He's already a top fantasy player, but his 20.2 points per game would likely increase under D'Antoni.
Rivers recruits MaggetteFriday 7/4, 8:18 AM CT
Corey Maggette is seriously considering joining the Boston Celtics after their coach, Doc Rivers, made a personal pitch to him, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: This move would diminish Maggette's fantasy value somewhat. With Paul Pierce and Ray Allen in the mix, it is unlikely Maggette would see the 35 minutes a night he got in Los Angeles.
