Dizon to play at Ford FieldSaturday 4/26, 10:44 PM CT
The Detroit Lions selected Jordon Dizon with the 45th pick in the draft. The Big Twelve's Defensive Player of the Year in 2007 notched 160 tackles last season.

Our View: Dizon will be asked to contribute as a special teamer. The Lions have standout linebacker Ernie Sims in the middle of their defense. A pick that actually makes sense by Detroit. Like running backs, NFL organization can never have enough quality tacklers.
Forte running to Soldier FieldSaturday 4/26, 10:31 PM CT
The Chicago Bears selected Matt Forte with the 44th pick of the draft. Forte was named to the All-Conference USA's first team in 2007 and was a force in the Tulane offense.

Our View: Forte finish his senior season with 2,127 rushing yards ranking second in the nation. Throw in 22 touchdowns -- add him to a team that had fewer 100 yard rushing games than any team in the league last year -- and you have possibilities.
Porter adds speed to Saints rosterSaturday 4/26, 9:54 PM CT
The New Orleans Saints selected Tracy Porter with the 40th pick in the draft. Porter, an All-Big Ten defensive back in his junior and senior season, lacks size but he's a playmaker the Saints can put to work immediately.

Our View: The Saints needs are on the defensive side of the ball, and Porter will have a chance to contribute as a rookie. He is a big time speedster that will also help on special teams.
49ers get quick fix on the OLSaturday 4/26, 9:48 PM CT
The San Francisco 49ers selected Chilo Rachal with the 39th pick of the draft. The USC All-Pac Ten first-teamer in 2007 is a prototypical NFL guard and could make an immediate impact with San Francisco.

Our View: Rachal wasn't ranked as one of the top offensive lineman in the draft due to his lack of college experience. He also had some durability issues during his time in SoCal. His a low-risk high-reward fix in an area the 49ers need quick help at.
Carlson lands in perfect spotSaturday 4/26, 9:34 PM CT
The Seattle Seahawks selected John Carlson with the 38th selection of the draft on Saturday. One of the top tight end prospects in the college ranks fills a huge need for Mike Holmgren's offense.

Our View: Carlson has the size, athleticism, and blocking skills to be a starter as a rookie. He was not only a Notre Dame football player, but played for Fighting Irish basketball team. He is arguably the one tight end that is NFL ready and that is exactly what the Hawks need in coach Mike's final season. The departure of Marcus Pollard could make Carlson a late round fantasy backup in formats that require a starting tight end.
Pack pick big wideout NelsonSaturday 4/26, 9:21 PM CT
The Green Bay Packers selected Jordy Nelson as the 36th overall pick in the draft. An Associated Press All-America first-teamer, Nelson had a solid senior season recording 133.4 receiving yards per game and grabbing 11 touchdown receptions.

Our View: At 6-3 and with 4.5 speed, the big receiver is a solid addition to the Green Bay offense for first-year starter Aaron Rodgers.
Chiefs go defense with 3rd pickSaturday 4/26, 9:14 PM CT
The Kansas City Chiefs used their third pick in the draft, in the second round (35th overall), on Virginia Tech cornerback Brandon Flowers. The cover corner was an Associated Press All-ACC second-teamer in 2007.

Our View: Flowers is on the small side (5-9, 185) and doesn't have catch-up speed, but is known for his superior technique. Flowers fits the current Cover-2 scheme of the Chiefs, but at this point in the draft the organization could have gone several different directions and they didn't need to replace Ty Law this early on day one. He is expected to serve as Patrick Surtain's backup.
Skins get wideout in 2nd roundSaturday 4/26, 9:04 PM CT
The Redskins first pick of the 2008 NFL draft came in the second round and was spent on wide receiver Devin Thomas. An All-Big Ten second-teamer out of Michigan State, Thomas lead the conference in receiving yards (with 1,260).

Our View: The speedy wide out ran a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash at the combine, and is a stand out special team return man. The playmaker was a solid selection for a team in need of wide outs with upside.
Merling first pick of 2nd roundSaturday 4/26, 7:54 PM CT
The Miami Dolphins selected Clemson junior Phillip Merling with the first pick (32nd overall) of the second round. The ACC honorable mention at defensive end has the size, power, and quickness to have a significant role on the Miami defensive line in his rookie season.

Our View: Merling is a solid choice by Miami. The defensive end was expected to go in the first round, so for now let's call the pick a steal.
Phillips final pick in first-roundSaturday 4/26, 7:46 PM CT
The New York Giants selected Kenny Phillips with the 31st pick of the draft. After being named to the All-ACC first team as a junior, Phillips decided to skip his senior season at Miami.

Our View: Arguably the top safety prospect in the draft, Phillips is quick, fast, he has size and is a versatile athlete. Not only was Phillips excited about joining a team in need of secondary help, the Giants were glad he was available. He will have an immediate impact in New York.
Keller goes 30th overallSaturday 4/26, 6:36 PM CT
The New York Jets second selection in the first round was Dustin Keller, the 30th overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. Keller was a second-team All-Big Ten selection in 2007.

Our View: Keller had a terrific senior season and then an over-the-top workout at the Indy Combine. The tight end began his college career as a wideout with Purdue but the weight room turned him into a tight end. Keller will add another dimension to the Jets offense and could start in his rookie year.
Balmer goes to 49ers; 29th overallSaturday 4/26, 6:14 PM CT
The 49ers made Kentwan Balmer the 29th overall pick in the first round on Saturday. The All-ACC second-teamer moved between end and tackle during his time at North Carolina, but in his senior season settled in at tackle.

Our View: His huge frame and the ability to collapse the pocket made him San Francisco's top pick. His versatility was what interested the 49ers the most, and that is likely how he will be used in the defensive line rotation as a rookie. Balmer gives Mike Nolan's defense an explosive playmaker, something the 49ers lacked in 2007.
Jackson to Seattle as 28th overallSaturday 4/26, 5:49 PM CT
Seattle used their first round pick to select Lawrence Jackson as the 28th overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. The USC team captain was named to the All-Pac-Ten first team in 2007.

Our View: The versatile lineman played mostly end during his college career but has the ability to move inside if necessary. He finished his career with 30.5 sacks. Hawks head coach Mike Holmgren and his defensive staff put a huge emphasis on rushing the passer, and Jackson brings this to the table right out of the gate.
Cason joins Bolts as 27th overallSaturday 4/26, 5:41 PM CT
The Chargers selected Antoine Cason with the 27th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Cason earned All-Pac Ten first team honors as both a cornerback and as a returner.

Our View: Cason is considered a shut-down corner with good size. A rare combination at the highest level. However, some don't buy the shut-down label due to his lack of catch-up speed. The Chargers didn't hint that they were going defense in the first round. The AFC West champs were expected to go offensive lineman with their first pick.
Brown to Texans as 26th overallSaturday 4/26, 5:32 PM CT
The Texans selected All-ACC selection Duane Brown with the 26th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Brown started his college career as a tight end, but he was moved to offensive tackle in his second season.

Our View: The big body has the physical tools to become a starter in the NFL, but his work ethic has been questioned. Most first-round selections are expected to be NFL ready, but this isn't the scouting take on Brown. That said the Texans addressed a need, and believe he has the most long-term upside among the remaining offensive lineman on the board.
Jenkins joins Boyz as 25th overallSaturday 4/26, 5:23 PM CT
The Cowboys selected Mike Jenkins with their second pick of the first round. The cornerback was the 25th overall selection. The first-team All-Big East selection is considered an accomplished defensive back that is NFL ready.

Our View: Arguably the most accomplished and complete corner in the draft, Jenkins will have an immediate impact in the secondary for the Cowboys.
South Carolina tailback goes 24thSaturday 4/26, 5:12 PM CT
The Titans used their first round selection on running back Chris Johnson, the 24th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Tennessee loves their first round tailbacks. The Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Year, Johnson is reportedly the fastest player in the draft.

Our View: His 4.24 time in the 40-yard dash is the fastest NFL combine time ever. While at East Carolina he was an all-purpose player and valued teammate. He joins a talented backfield in Tennessee that includes starter LenDale White.
Mendenhall to backup ParkerSaturday 4/26, 5:04 PM CT
The Steelers went running back in the first round of the 2008 draft by selecting Rashard Mendenhall as the 23rd overall selection. The Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year was dominant in his junior season with Illinois.

Our View: Mendehnall offers the Steelers insurance for Willie Parker who has been overused to a degree in Pittsburgh. The choice isn't that surprising but the Steelers were expected to go offensive line first and foremost on day one.
Talib scores Cover-2 roleSaturday 4/26, 4:33 PM CT
With the 20th overall selection in the 2008 draft the Buccaneers selected Orange Bowl MVP Aqib Talib. Talib possesses all the tools NFL teams look for in a defensive back; size, athleticism, and catch up speed.

Our View: Talib had 13 total interceptions in his three years with the Jayhawks, and showed enough skill and talent that Kansas also occasionally used him as on the offensive side of the ball. Monte Kiffin loves Talib's skills, and the 6-1 corner will step right into an important role in the Tampa-2 scheme.
Otah goes 18th overallSaturday 4/26, 4:22 PM CT
The Carolina Panthers selected with the 19th overall selection. Jeff Otah was honored as an All-Big East first-teamer in his senior season.

Our View: As a junior college transfer, Otah played only two seasons at Pitt but was very promising and productive during that time. Otah has the ideal build NFL teams look for in an offensive lineman. Last season the Panthers tried a zone blocking scheme with their O-line and it had mixed results. Otah isn't as NFL-ready as some of the other top tackles, but offers long-term upside for a team that would rather run the ball.
Flacco goes 18th overallSaturday 4/26, 4:15 PM CT
The Ravens drafted Joe Flacco with the 18th pick overall. A two-time All-Colonial conference first-teamer, Flacco is a small-school quarterback with big-time NFL potential.

Our View: After dominating the competition in his senior season Flacco did much the same to the competition at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. He far and away has the best combination of size and arm strength of any QB in the draft, and he certainly makes the QB competition in Baltimore that much more interesting. The rookie will battle with Troy Smith and Kyle Boller for playing time.
OT Cherilus lands in MotownSaturday 4/26, 4:10 PM CT
The Detroit Lions selected Boston College offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus with the 17th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: Cherilus projects as a right tackle at the professional level, and definitely fills a position of need in the Motor City. Look at the bright side, at least general manager Matt Millen didn’t select a wide receiver.
Cards land Rodgers-CromartieSaturday 4/26, 4:06 PM CT
The Arizona Cardinals selected cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie with the 16th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: With Antrel Rolle moving to safety the Cardinals had a need at corner, and Rodgers-Cromartie has more upside than any player at his position in this draft.
Chiefs move up for OG AlbertSaturday 4/26, 3:56 PM CT
The Kansas City Chiefs selected Virginia offensive guard Branden Albert with the 15th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: The Chiefs moved up in a trade with the Detroit Lions to fortify their offensive line. The organization is rebuilding, and doing it the right way from the inside out with their first two picks in the draft.
RB Stewart selected by PanthersSaturday 4/26, 3:51 PM CT
The Carolina Panthers selected Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart with the 14th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: The Panthers want to feature a power running game in 2008, and Stewart provides them with a big punishing back, who can help move the chains. Stewart is dealing with a toe injury, but this pick isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement for DeAngelo Williams. If Stewart is healthy, we expect the Panthers to use a committee approach this season.
Ravens and Jags trade updateSaturday 4/26, 3:42 PM CT
The Baltimore Ravens traded the No. 8 overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft to the Jacksonville Jaguars for the 26th overall pick, two third round sections (71st and 89th overall) and fourth round pick (123rd overall).

Our View: After the Atlanta Falcons chose quarterback Matt Ryan in the three hole, Baltimore decided to move down and accumulate additional picks.
Chitown fortifies O-line with WilliamsSaturday 4/26, 3:40 PM CT
The Chicago Bears selected Vanderbilt offensive tackle Chris Williams with the 13th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: The Bears have plenty of holes to fill, with none more important than the offensive line. Williams could start at left tackle from day one, which would allow John Tait to move to his more natural position at right tackle.
Denver upgrades O-line with CladySaturday 4/26, 3:31 PM CT
The Denver Broncos selected Boise State offensive tackle Ryan Clady with the 12th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: With the offseason retirement of Matt Lepsis, the Broncos don’t have an experienced left tackle on the roster, making Clady a solid choice for an organization known for leaning on the running game.
Bills choose CB McKelvin 11th overallSaturday 4/26, 3:26 PM CT
The Buffalo Bills selected Troy cornerback Leodis McKelvin with the 11th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: Many thought Buffalo would go wide receiver with this pick, but instead chose McKelvin, who can help out at corner and in the return game. He has blazing speed, but there are some questions about his ball skills.
Patriots select LB Mayo at 10th overallSaturday 4/26, 3:20 PM CT
The New England Patriots selected Tennessee linebacker Jerod Mayo with the 10th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: Mayo can play inside and out, and fills a position of need given the advanced age of Tedy Bruschi.
LB Rivers lands in Cincy at 1.09Saturday 4/26, 3:11 PM CT
The Cincinnati Bengals selected USC linebacker Keith Rivers with the ninth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: Cincinnati really wanted another Trojan, Sedrick Ellis, but settled for Rivers after the Saints moved in front of them in the trade with New England. The Bengals linebacker corps was decimated by injuries last year, and Rivers possesses the athleticism to be a three down backer in Cincinnati.
Jags move up to select DE HarveySaturday 4/26, 3:07 PM CT
The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Florida defensive end Derrick Harvey with the eighth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: Jacksonville moved up from 26th overall in a trade with Baltimore to select Harvey, who posted 27 tackles for loss and 18 sacks in the past two seasons at Florida. Harvey will battle veterans Brent Hawkins and Paul Spicer for the right to start on the other side of Reggie Hayward.
Saints jump to seventh to take EllisSaturday 4/26, 2:58 PM CT
The New Orleans Saints selected USC defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis with the seventh overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: The New Orleans Saints obtained the pick in a trade with the New England Patriots. During the offseason the organization has addressed their secondary and linebacker corps, and Ellis will provide an upgrade on the interior defensive line for a defense that ranked 26th in the NFL last season.
Jets select Gholston from the six holeSaturday 4/26, 2:52 PM CT
The New York Jets selected Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston with the sixth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: Gholston possesses freakish measurables, but some pundits feel he disappears too often on tape. Regardless, he will likely start at outside linebacker on the other side of Calvin Pace in the Jets 3-4 scheme.
Dorsey goes fifth overall to KCSaturday 4/26, 2:45 PM CT
The Kansas City Chiefs selected LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey with the fifth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: The Chiefs were gashed for 130.6 yards per game last year, finishing 28th in the league against the run. Dorsey posted 10 sacks and 23 tackles for loss during his career at LSU and possesses an A+ character, along with the burst and explosion to be a disruptive force at the professional level. We look for the Chiefs to address the offensive line with the 17th overall pick that they received from the Vikings in the Jared Allen trade.
Oaktown selects Darren McFaddenSaturday 4/26, 2:34 PM CT
The Oakland Raiders selected Arkansas running back Darren McFadden with the fourth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: McFadden carries well-documented off-the-field issues, but he’s considered to be the most talented player in the draft. McFadden has blazing 4.33 speed, and should be immediately utilized as part of a timeshare with Justin Fargas, as long as the Raiders can get him into training camp on time.
Ryan goes third overall to ATLSaturday 4/26, 2:26 PM CT
The Atlanta Falcons selected Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan with the third overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: Ryan possesses off-the-chart intangibles, an excellent arm and was considered by most pundits to be the only franchise type quarterback in the draft. The Falcons are hopeful that Ryan can become the face of the franchise, while providing stability to a premium position.
St. Louis selects DE Chris LongSaturday 4/26, 2:17 PM CT
The St. Louis Rams selected Virginia defensive end Chris Long with the second overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View: St. Louis ranked 21st in the league in sacks last season, and Long, who has the best motor in the draft, should immediately push James Hall for playing time on the other side of Leonard Little in the Rams 4-3 scheme.
Jenkins going to Tampa, if availableSaturday 4/26, 1:59 PM CT
Buccaneers' officials have reportedly told South Florida cornerback Mike Jenkins that he will be drafted by the team if he is available at their 20th slot in the draft, according to The Tampa Tribune.

Our View: The Buccaneers have praised Eugene Wilson during his transition from safety to cornerback, but the selection of Jenkins would hurt Wilson's fantasy stock for 2008.
McKelvin could go to Jets at pick six?Saturday 4/26, 1:51 PM CT
Newsday suggests that the Jets may select Troy cornerback Leodis McKelvin with the sixth pick in the draft. Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston would be hard to pass up if available, but the Jets reportedly have McKelvin rated higher on their board.

Our View: The Jets have a greater need at right cornerback, than they do at defensive end.
Saints want to trade up for DorseySaturday 4/26, 1:11 PM CT
The Saints would like to trade up to select LSU DT Glenn Dorsey, according to FOX Sports. They have talked to the Raiders and Chiefs, among others, about moving up. Atlanta was interested in Dorsey at pick three, but they have some injury concerns about him.

Our View: After cornerback, defensive tackle is the biggest area of need for New Orleans, and only Dorsey and Sedrick Ellis of USC have first round talent.
Ravens trying to trade up for Ryan? Saturday 4/26, 1:01 PM CT
The Ravens are believed to be trying to trade up to land Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, according to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network. The Falcons are speculated to take Ryan with the third pick, which is why Baltimore needs to trade up to two.

Our View: Quarterback is the biggest area of need for Baltimore, following the retirement of Steve McNair and the fact that Kyle Boller is ineffective.
Alexander on Broncos' radar? Saturday 4/26, 12:52 PM CT
Shaun Alexander is on the Broncos' radar, according to Draft Headquarters.

Our View: Alexander's best days are behind him, but he would still garner fantasy buzz if he went to Denver, as their running backs are always hot targets among the fantasy community. Travis Henry has a poor track record with durability and isn't seen as an every-down back for Denver as well.
Harvey on Lions' radar Saturday 4/26, 12:45 PM CT
Several sources state that the Lions are targeting Florida defensive end Derrick Harvey, if he is still available at pick 15, according to ProFootballTalk. If he is off the board, the Lions are believed to take Tennessee linebacker Jerod Mayo.

Our View: The Lions have plenty of offense, and will address their defensive front-seven in the first round.
Ryan headed to Atlanta? Saturday 4/26, 12:33 PM CT
Michael Smith of ESPN reports that the Falcons will select Boston College quarterback with the third overall pick in the draft.

Our View: He is the top offensive prospect on many draft boards, and would allow the Falcons to build a new identity at quarterback.
McFadden going to Oakland? Saturday 4/26, 12:29 PM CT
Michael Smith of ESPN reports that Arkansas RB Darren McFadden is going to the Raiders at number four.

Our View: It is rumored that DE Chris Long is going at two to St. Louis, and QB Matt Ryan is going at three to Atlanta, making McFadden the best available at four. He would add explosiveness to a Raiders' offense that lacked a pulse in 2007.
Long speculated to go to Rams at 2 Saturday 4/26, 12:21 PM CT
Virginia Defensive end Chris Long is speculated to go to the Rams with the second pick of the draft, according to ESPN. LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey will be the pick if they don't take Long.

Our View: Long will fill a need at defensive end, but either player will shore up their defensive line, and make an impact, likely right away.
Good chance Shockey will be dealt?Saturday 4/26, 8:51 AM CT
There is a good chance that Jeremy Shockey will be dealt today, according to FanNation. The Saints remain the top suitor, but the Falcons are also believed to be interested, among others.

Our View: The Giants were very pleased with the performance of tight end Kevin Boss last season, and he was a key contributor during their magical run to the title. Shockey has a poor track record with durability as well.
Roos re-signs with Titans Saturday 4/26, 8:16 AM CT
Michael Roos re-signed with the Titans, according to the Tennessean. It is a six-year, $43-million contract extension, and the deal makes him the third highest paid tackle in the NFL.

Our View: The team wants to insure quarterback Vince Young will be well protected in Mike Heimerdinger's offense, and re-signing Roos was a good investment. He is strong against the pass, and is still improving against the run.
Ayodele dealt to Dolphins Saturday 4/26, 8:09 AM CT
Akin Ayodele has been dealt to the Dolphins in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick, according to FOX Sports. Tight end Anthony Fasano was also packaged in the deal to Miami.

Our View: The recent addition of Zach Thomas to Dallas made Ayodele expendable. Ayodele made 141 tackles over two seasons in Dallas. His fantasy value remains low.
Fasano dealt to Dolphins Saturday 4/26, 8:04 AM CT
Anthony Fasano has been dealt to the Dolphins from the Cowboys in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick, according to FOX Sports. Linebacker Akin Ayodele was also including in the deal to Miami.

Our View: In two seasons with Dallas, Fasano caught 28 passes for 269 yards and one touchdown. David Martin, last year's starter at tight end in Miami, only caught 34 passes for 303 yards. Fasano is expected to be ready for training camp following his reconstructive shoulder surgery, and he will push Martin for playing time.
