NEWSBREAKERS NFL
Winslow seeking new contractSunday 5/18, 7:31 PM CT
Kellen Winslow Jr wants a raise and he wants it now, according to a report on Cleveland.com. Winslow has three years left at about $12 million dollars on his current deal, one that pales in comparison to the 6-year, $42 million deal that Dallas Clark recently signed.

Our View: How about this. If you want more money, don't sign a contract that you feel is undervalued. Life in the NFL is different in that a player can be cut at any point, but really, would you want to give Winslow a new contract, even if his production warranted it given his propensity to be injured?
Morgan limited early onSunday 5/18, 7:27 PM CT
Dan Morgan (Achilles) will be limited in practice and likely won't be allowed to play at full speed until training camp, according to the Times-Picayune. Jonathan Vilma (knee) has also been slowed by injury.

Our View: Morgan and Vilma add depth to the Saints LB corps that could use it, and both are expected to be back and ready to go once the games count with Morgan battling Scott Shanle for playing time.
Freeney on slow road to recoverySunday 5/18, 7:19 PM CT
Dwight Freeney missed minicamp and will likely miss the start of training camp as well because of the foot surgery he had last season, according to ESPN.com. "It's something where you wake up in the morning, you feel it, but once you get going it sort of works itself out. It's a process, it's one of those things where you have to understand every week is new and just because it hurts on Tuesday doesn't mean it will hurt on Thursday."

Our View: Freeney has been running three times a week to get himself back in shape, but he appears to still have a fair bit of work to do before he will be able to return to the field.
Sanders could miss start of campSunday 5/18, 7:16 PM CT
Bob Sanders skipped the team's mandatory minicamp and will likely also miss the start of training camp as well due to his surgically repaired shoulder, according to ESPN.com. "I've got to be completely healthy, and I want to make sure that when I do come back, I'll be 100 percent."

Our View: Sanders should be ready to go once the games count as there is a long time for him to work himself back into shape. He may not be on the field right now, but he has started to lift weights which is a good sign.
Colts looking to Saturday for helpSunday 5/18, 11:00 AM CT
The Indianapolis Colts have contacted the agent for offensive center Jeff Saturday with hopes of renegotiating his current contract, a move that may be able to help the team in terms of salary cap dollars, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Our View: The team, according to the Star, has "made it clear" that they have no intentions of losing their Pro Bowl center, but his age (33) and the addition of not one but two strong prospects at the position made via this year's NFL Draft (Steve Justice and Mike Pollak) has given the team a need to address the current situation in what could prove to be one of many moves made over recent seasons to earn dollars over the cap in exchange for promises in the future. Saturday is the kind of guy that will consider such a move to help the team, thus a resulting contract with different-but-positive changes could be coming. We will update if/when news becomes available.
Dunn looking to show and proveSunday 5/18, 9:48 AM CT
Tampa Bay veteran rusher Warrick Dunn may not be the young man he once was when he first donned the Bucs jersey, but he has every intent to fight for the starting job as he returns in 2008, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View: Dunn spoke with reporters following optional workouts at the Bucs' new training facilities yesterday and waxed poetic on his intentions to contribute in 2008. "I would never consider myself a third-down back. It's not my mentality. I don't play the game that way," said Dunn. "I don't think Coach Jon Gruden brought me here just to play on third down. He believes in me, and I just have to go out and prove it." If Dunn is anywhere close to the form he has displayed in recent seasons, he will be on the field. Look at the current depth chart and you can see the common theme running throughout: Veteran commodities. Dunn fits the mold, has done it for Gruden in the past, and could be on the verge of yet another surprising campaign.
Raiders remain a messSunday 5/18, 9:43 AM CT
Reports out of Oakland indicate coach Lane Kiffin is more than cognizant of potential troubles ahead in terms of his position with the team and that his surrounding coaching staff is more of an indication that owner Al Davis may be seeking change than he wants to admit, according to the Contra Costa Times.

Our View: None of the parties involved have refuted the report that Davis put a letter of resignation in front of Kiffin and told him to sign, and with that drama swirling, Davis has (a) nixed the agreement to send defensive coordinator Rob Ryan packing (a deal Kiffin has asked to have done last season and Davis reportedly agreed to until the '07 was completed, at which time Davis said he had changed his mind), and (b) hired James Lofton to be the team's wide receivers coach, a man Kiffin had not asked for and a man that was interviewed for Kiffin's job when the position was given to the former USC assistant. Unnamed sources within the organization indicate the players are fully aware of the situation and fears of potential problems as a result of those events remain in the minds of all as training camp looms.
Dolphins looking at OC McKinneySunday 5/18, 8:24 AM CT
The Miami Dolphins are reportedly giving heavy consideration to signing free-agent offensive center Steve McKinney , according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: McKinney was released by the Texans in late March, having enter the fold in Houston as an unrestricted free agent in 2002 (the first year of business for the Texans). He had originally stated he believed the Texans would re-sign him despite his growing age (32) and concerns about his reconstructed knees. However, it now appears Bill Parcells is not going to let him and will add him to a unit in need of veteran leadership in Miami. If/when this becomes official, we will update with all pertinent news.
Manning worried about Harrison's healthSunday 5/18, 8:17 AM CT
Peyton Manning met with reporters yesterday and had comments on more than a few of the Colts' issues this off-season, but brought particular focus to the health concerns (as opposed to legal) for receiver Marvin Harrison , according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Despite the recent flurry of gunfire and a pending investigation about an incident at his bar and grill in Philadelphia, the face of the NFL choose to share his worries about Harrison just getting healthy. "I didn't have a whole lot of reaction to it [the shooting] because I hadn't talked to anybody personally about it," said Manning, then turning his attention to the ailing knees of the future Hall of Fame target. "I don't think there's any question he can still do it. Obviously, that's our hope - that he'll be 100 percent healthy to be able to play against Chicago in the season opener. That is what we expect. Marvin has told us he will be 100 percent and ready to go." In other words, even if the legal troubles prove without merit, the obvious pains of last season without Harrison linger and fantasy owners should be worried about the on-the-field progress as well as the off.
