Benson passes through waivers unclaimed Thursday 6/12, 8:48 PM CT
Cedric Benson passed through waivers without being claimed by a single team, according to a report on Pro Football Talk.

Our View: No big shock here, especially since whichever team claimed him would have had to have paid for the last two years of the contract. He is now an unrestricted free agent, for what it's worth.
Curry returns to practice fieldThursday 6/12, 8:45 PM CT
Ronald Curry, recovering from foot surgery, returned to practice on Thursday, according to NFL.com. "Regardless of who was here, I felt like I always been productive, whatever they ask me to do. And it's not going to change this year ...," Curry said. "You know, Javon [Walker], he's going to be the guy, and I'm just going to be out there making the plays when they go to me."

Our View: Curry will function as a solid veteran presence for young quarterback JaMarcus Russell, and though he lacks the speed he once possessed, he can be a quality option in the passing game when healthy.
Grant likely to miss training campThursday 6/12, 8:37 PM CT
Ryan Grant still hasn't given any indication that he will attend the Packers training camp, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Listen to the words of HC Mike McCarthy. "I don't anticipate it's going to change. I don't know what the timeframe is, but there's been nothing said to me that would indicate for his situation to change."

Our View: Grant wont accept the second year tender currently on the table, not after rushing for 956 yards and eight scores last season. He certainly deserves to be paid more, and it appears that he is serious about holding out until he gets it.
Engram might miss campThursday 6/12, 8:34 PM CT
Bobby Engram will still report to training camp, maybe, if you ask HC Mike Holmgren, according to NFL.com. "I've mentioned the fact that I thought he would be at training camp, and I still believe that. Now Bobby wouldn't be the first player who I've coached -- who I like -- who felt he needed to make a statement of some kind involving training camp."

Our View: Engram caught a career-high 94 passes last season and is looking for a substantial increase over his current $1.7 million contract. Stay tuned.
Branch could miss all of training campThursday 6/12, 8:32 PM CT
Deion Branch is progressing in his recovery from ACL surgery, but HC Mike Holmgren said that Branch may not be able to participate in most, if not all of training camp, according to NFL.com.

Our View: This isn't anything new, as it has been widely reported that Branch may not be ready for Week 1 and might start the year on the PUP list.
Winslow at camp, still looking for contractThursday 6/12, 8:29 PM CT
Kellen Winslow Jr wants a contract extension, and his agent Drew Rosenhaus said that things are going well, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I have had discussions with [GM] Phil Savage ... about Kellen's contract. Kellen has made it clear in the past what he would like to accomplish." Unfortunately, Savage doesn't share that optimism. "We don't have a lot of wiggle room right now ... I think we've let it be known kind of where we are."

Our View: This will likely drag on, but at least Winslow has been at practice and looking quite strong after off-season knee surgery.
Hardy in hot waterThursday 6/12, 7:12 PM CT
Rookie James Hardy is making a name for himself, but it's for being involved in police matters and not for his work on the field. Hardy, already dealing with an event in which he reportedly brandished a fire arm during an argument, has now been identified as one of three Bills players in the car during the alleged Marshawn Lynch hit and run accident, according to the Buffalo News.

Our View: Way to ingratiate yourself with your new employer big fella. Hardy better cooperate with authorities and tell them whatever it is that he knows regarding this incident as he is clearly heading down a path that the Bills, and the NFL, won't be pleased with.
Teammates, officials subpoenaed Thursday 6/12, 7:02 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, three Buffalo Bills and a high ranking team official have been subpoenaed to appear before the grand jury looking into the the hit and run allegations against Marshawn Lynch, according to the Associated Press. “Investigators believe these people have information regarding this case,” Buffalo Police Department spokesman Michael DeGeorge said.

Our View: There have been reports that the players involved are James Hardy, Steve Johnson and Christian Gaddis, while there are also rumors that up to three front-office personal will eventually be called to testify. Here's our advice to Mr. Lynch - you had better start cooperating or you could find yourself sharing time in the yard with Michael Vick sometime soon.
Johnson released Thursday 6/12, 3:58 PM CT
Tight end Teyo Johnson has been released by the Bills, according to BuffaloBills.com.

Our View: Johnson was working near the bottom of the Bills' depth chart at tight end, and had little chance to make an impact this season.
Dorsey left practice on cart Thursday 6/12, 3:53 PM CT
DeDe Dorsey was taken off the field this morning on a cart, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: He left the stadium on crutches, and the team is yet to update his condition. Dorsey was competing for the third spot on the Bengals depth chart at running back behind Rudi Johnson and Kenny Watson.
Brown returns to 11-on-11 drills Thursday 6/12, 3:28 PM CT
Ronnie Brown has returned to 11-on-11 drills in practice for the first time in the off-season as he recovers from a torn ACL, according to the Sun Sentinel. Brown said, "It is a big step. It felt pretty good. The previous week I felt pretty good but I've been limited a little bit, just doing some individual drills and some other things. For the last few days I've been able to participate and it feels pretty good to be back out on the field." He reportedly looked sharp during the practice.

Our View: He also noted that his knee is doing really well, and he is looking forward to training camp. He thinks he will be back to 100% by September.
Peko inks extension Thursday 6/12, 3:22 PM CT
Domata Peko has inked a five-year extension with the Bengals worth $29.3 million, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Peko is a solid presence at defensive tackle, and registered 52 tackles (36 solo) in 2006, with 1.5 sacks and one fumble recovery. Peko was worth the investment to remain in Cincinnati, and he still has room to improve.
Johnson has a sore backThursday 6/12, 2:36 PM CT
Wide receiver Chad Johnson refused to practice at minicamp today after telling the Cincinnati Bengals' medical staff he had a sore back, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Let the distractions begin. Johnson's agent Drew Rosenhaus offered a different opinion, stating that Johnson had a sore ankle that might need scoped. Why do we get the feeling that this entire situation won't end well?
Jackson stands out in OTAsThursday 6/12, 2:27 PM CT
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wrapped up the “voluntary’’ portion of their off-season workout program Thursday, and one of the players who really stood out was rookie receiver Dexter Jackson, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View: Jackson, who was drafted in the second round primarily as a return man, is already proving to be a pretty good receiving threat, and he did nothing to dispel that thinking Thursday. During 11-on-11 drills, Jackson beat double coverage and got behind veteran safety Eugene Wilson on a go route before hauling in a 40-yard pass from Jeff Garcia that would have gone for a touchdown. And while this is a good start, we will withhold judgement until the rookie dons the pads in training camp.
Ogden officially retiresThursday 6/12, 2:11 PM CT
Left tackle Jonathan Ogden officially announced his retirement Thursday, according to ESPN, ending a stellar career with the Baltimore Ravens in which the left offensive tackle garnered 11 Pro Bowl invitations and a Super Bowl ring,

Our View: Teammates believe Ogden might have considered returning for another season were it not for that troublesome big toe. Jared Gaither, a second-year player out of Maryland, is currently the front-runner to replace Ogden on the left side. He may not be as talented as Ogden; however, at 6-9, 350 pounds, he has the size to fill those rather big footsteps.
Lemon a work in progressThursday 6/12, 2:03 PM CT
Media perception is that quarterback Cleo Lemon had a bad spring and even his head coach admitted that he had struggled. But Lemon scored a victory with his coordinator, Dirk Koetter, who praised his progress in a new system with new terminology and against a defense that blitzed on nearly every down of team drills, according to Jaguars.com.

Our View: The Jaguars have high expectations in 2008, and it’s imperative that Lemon continues to progress in the event of an injury to starter David Garrard. By all accounts, Lemon finished the recent organized team activities with his best week of practice this spring.
Peterson appears re-energizedThursday 6/12, 1:59 PM CT
Linebacker Mike Peterson hasn’t missed an offseason practice, and appears to re-energized for the 2008 season. Peterson has had an outstanding spring and is likely headed for another big season, according to Jaguars.com.

Our View: Peterson has missed 17 games due to various injuries over the past two seasons, but he’s in a contract year and has a goal of making the Pro Bowl. Making it through the offseason without missing a practice due to any nagging injuries is a good start in that direction. Stay tuned.
Williamson continues to make impactThursday 6/12, 1:50 PM CT
Wide receiver Troy Williamson is thought to be no worse than fourth on the Jacksonville depth chart following an ultra-impressive performance this spring, especially during the final two weeks, according to Jaguars.com.

Our View: Offensive Coordinator Dirk Koetter loves the speed and big-play potential Williamson has shown during the offseason program. Heading into training camp, Williamson has a major head start on winning a roster spot and possibly a lot more. Currently the Jaguars depth chart at wideout is as follows: Jerry Porter, Reggie Williams, Dennis Northcutt, Troy Williamson and Mike Walker.
Walker impressive during past weekThursday 6/12, 1:44 PM CT
The Jacksonville Jaguars brought an end to their spring practice season on Thursday with a short but spirited final session, and it was wide receiver Mike Walker who stole the show, again, according to Jaguars.com. Walker, who is battling back from knee surgery and a season on the injured reserve list, made a leaping, twisting catch along the sideline in a team passing drill. The catch caused a cheer from his teammates.

Our View: Walker only started practicing last week. In the span of six practices, it’s believed he has put himself in no worse than the number five spot among the wide receivers. He finished organized team activities with several nice grabs on Thursday.
Williams to report to training campThursday 6/12, 1:38 PM CT
Detroit Lions wide receiver Roy Williams does not want to be part of the group of NFL receivers who are making threats and demands because of unhappiness with their contracts, and vows to report to training camp on time, according to the Detroit News. "Don't put me in that mix," Williams said Thursday. "I'm a different type of guy. I don't want to be the guy who has a problem. I do what I'm told. I've always cooperated with the Lions, done my part trying to help this team win. I'll continue to do that."

Our View: Williams has been the subject of several offseason trade rumors, and the 2008 season is the last year on his current contract. He will make a total of $5.8 million in base salary and bonuses. In the day and age of diva receivers, it’s nice to hear that Williams will honor his contract and report to work.
Bly practicing at full speedThursday 6/12, 1:26 PM CT
Denver Broncos cornerback Bly said he "tweaked" his right hamstring a couple of weeks ago, and only this week has been feeling good enough to go full speed, according to the Denver Post. "It's still not 100 percent, but still, it is good enough for me to break and react without having any pain," Bly said. "I can open up and run, and I don't think I'm endangering myself at all right now by practicing. Actually, I think I'm strengthening it and helping it."

Our View: Bly intercepted five passes on the opposite side of Champ Bailey last season, and appears to be progessing nicely from the hamstring injury.
Romo focused on improving his gameThursday 6/12, 1:19 PM CT
Because of his success – two Pro Bowl trips, team records for yards and touchdown passes in a season – it's easy to forget that quarterback Tony Romo has made only 26 career starts. With such a short body of work, there is room for Romo to grow, and he has approached the off-season looking for ways to improve, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has worked with Romo on his posture, which not only allows him to have better vision but also keeps him in position to throw more quickly. And even improvisation is practiced, with Romo performing drills that have him throwing on the move to the left and right, changing his arm angle to simulate throwing around, over or under a defender.
Burleson impressive in mini-campThursday 6/12, 12:29 PM CT
Wide receiver Nate Burleson has arguably been the best player in the Seattle Seahawks’ June mini-camp - focused, intent and consistently productive, according to the Tacoma News Tribune. Offensive coordinator Gil Haskell said he has seen signs of Burleson’s maturity and skills coalescing, like the deep touchdown pass he hauled in during practice Wednesday, beating Kelly Jennings by several steps.

Our View: With Deion Branch hindered by a knee injury and Bobby Engram holding out, Burleson is receiving extra repetitions as the No. 1 receiver in mini-camps. Burleson currently carries a late 10th round ADP, making him a potential value pick in 2008 fantasy drafts.
Marshall continues to progressThursday 6/12, 12:09 PM CT
Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall ran routes with teammates to open camp Wednesday morning and caught a few passes with his right hand, according to the Denver Post. This is news because Marshall hasn’t used that hand (at least not during the practices that have been open to the media) since he underwent surgery to repair severe lacerations in his right forearm during March.

Our View: Marshall wasn’t gripping the ball tightly with his right hand as he caught the long passes, but he was using the injured arm to cradle the ball - something he wasn’t doing last week when he was spotted catching a pass with only his left hand. From the sound of this report, Marshall is progressing nicely towards participation in training camp.
Leinart displaying improvementThursday 6/12, 12:01 PM CT
Head coach Ken Whisenhunt was asked if there is a plan to resurrect the dual-quarterback scheme from last year. And while he didn’t totally rule it out, he did comment that quarterback Matt Leinart is much more comfortable in the two-minute drill, no huddle and goal line packages this offseason, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Whisenhunt has consistently stated that Leinart will be his starter this season, but after last years rotating quarterback scenario there is always room for some doubt. We consider Leinart a fantasy backup this year, but he certainly possesses upside potential considering the quality targets in the Cardinals receiver corps.
Rivers progressing nicelyThursday 6/12, 11:46 AM CT
In his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, quarterback Philip Rivers has progressed to the point where he is leading the first team in almost every rep during offseason workouts, including in 11-on-11 drills against the defense, according to the Sporting News.

Our View: Every once in awhile, Billy Volek fills in with the starters while Rivers stands off to the side and watches or stretches his surgically repaired right knee. Rivers is expected to be almost 100 percent by the start of training camp.
Crumpler drops 15 poundsThursday 6/12, 11:37 AM CT
Tight end Alge Crumpler has made a smooth transition from the Falcons to the Titans this offseason. His weight is down roughly 10-15 pounds and he's shown no ill effects from a knee injury that slowed him last season and limited his production, according to the Sporting News.

Our View: Crumpler and quarterback Vince Young have already developed good chemistry this offseason, watching film and working on the field together. Given the absence of proven playmakers in the receiver corps, it’s not out of the question for Crumpler to emerge as the Titan’s No. 1 receiving threat in 2008.
Bradley expected to start in the middleThursday 6/12, 11:04 AM CT
The Philadelphia Eagles didn’t decide that Stewart Bradley would be their starting middle linebacker based entirely on his performance in the final three games of last season. It was based more on the continuous improvement he displayed in grasping the defensive scheme during practice, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View: We will keep an eye on Bradley’s progress during training camp. He’s already a solid sleeper prospect, but if we hear for certain that he will be a three-down linebacker, then Bradley will really begin to pique our interest.
Umenyiora not happy with contract Thursday 6/12, 10:53 AM CT
Osi Umenyiora would love to see his six-year, $41 million contract extension redone. However, the defensive end says he is not going to create any controversy this summer, according to the New York Daily News. Umenyiora is going to practice while talking to the New York Giants brass about a new deal. "I will be in camp," Umenyiora said. "I'm not going to hold out. My situation is a little different."

Our View: Umenyiora will be expected to prove his worth this season now that Michael Strahan has retired. Umenyiora will likely face the constant double-teams Strahan often received. Regardless, we expect him to be a top 5 player at his position in IDP leagues this year.
Colts release StanleyThursday 6/12, 10:40 AM CT
The Indianapolis Colts have released veteran punter Chad Stanley, according to the Indianapolis Star. He had signed a one-year, $730,000 contract earlier in the offseason to compete with incumbent Hunter Smith.

Our View: With Stanley out of the mix, Smith’s training camp competition likely will come from Adam Crossett, a rookie free agent out of Missouri.
Rams ink OG SchueningThursday 6/12, 10:36 AM CT
The St. Louis Rams signed fifth-round draft choice Roy Schuening to an undisclosed contract, according to ESPN.

Our View: Schuening will compete in training camp for a reserve role on the Rams offensive line.
Robertson sidelined by sore kneeThursday 6/12, 10:29 AM CT
Defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson sat out practice Wednesday with a sore left knee. He said he would not practice again until the Denver Broncos training camp opens July 25, according to the Denver Post. "I'm just trying to take it easy the rest of camp," Robertson said.

Our View: Robertson also sat out part of the team's passing camp in May. He has suffered through knee injuries during his first five years in the NFL with the New York Jets and had offseason surgery on his wrist.
Peters looking for megadealThursday 6/12, 10:22 AM CT
Left tackle Jason Peters skipped the Buffalo Bills’ mandatory minicamp practice Wednesday because he wants a new contract, and it’s obvious the Bills will have to make the left tackle the highest-paid player in team history to satisfy his demands, according to the Buffalo News.

Our View: Bottom line… left tackle is a premium position in the NFL, and the Buffalo front office is likely going to have to open up the checkbook. Peters still has three years remaining on a contract that has a maximum value of $4 million a year, and is reportedly seeking a deal that will pay him in the neighborhood of $10 million per season.
Flacco impressive in mini-campThursday 6/12, 10:14 AM CT
Rookie first-round quarterback Joe Flacco had some impressive throws in the Baltimore Ravens’ recent mini-camp, most notably a tight spiral to receiver Demetrius Williams for a touchdown in heavy traffic during a red-zone drill, according to the Carroll County Times. Flacco’s arm strength surpassed his accuracy, but he seems to be gradually getting the hang of the offense.

Our View: Flacco will be competing in training camp with Kyle Boller and Troy Smith for the starter's role. Currently, Smith appears to have a leg up on the other two, but the Ravens would love to see Flacco seize the starting job, after investing a first-round pick on him in the 2008 NFL draft.
Johnson late for practice Thursday 6/12, 10:04 AM CT
The first 45 minutes of Cincinnati Bengals' minicamp today saw Chad Johnson do virtually nothing in practice. After arriving for a team meeting at 8 a.m. this morning, Johnson arrived 12 minutes late for the 9:45 a.m. practice. When Johnson did arrive, he wasn't interested in running position drills or interacting with many teammates, according to ESPN.

Our View: Friend and fellow receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh was the only player or coach to talk to Johnson during the early portions of practice. Johnson was whispering to Houshmandzadeh quiet enough that reporters and cameras nearby couldn't pick up the conversation. Johnson didn't run routes with quarterback Carson Palmer or other signal callers during passing drills. First impressions by his body language is Johnson is not happy to be in Cincinnati, but is doing what he can to avoid any fines or penalties.
Jurevicius has had three offseason surgeriesThursday 6/12, 10:00 AM CT
For the first time, Cleveland Browns’ receiver Joe Jurevicius disclosed that he had three surgeries in the off-season - one to clean up an old knee injury and two to treat a staph infection, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Jurevicius, 33 and embarking on his 11th NFL season, has been rehabbing the knee inside the team's facility and never considered retiring as a result of the recent knee complications.

Our View: Offseason surgery always raises red flags, and three surgeries is a definite eye opener. Coupled with the addition of Donte' Stallworth, we expect Jurevicius to provide minimal fantasy impact in 2008.
Utecht a sleeper in Cincy?Thursday 6/12, 9:50 AM CT
Signing tight end Ben Utecht away from Indianapolis Colts is one of the most positive moves of the Cincinnati Bengals' offseason, according to the Dayton Daily News. He gives quarterback Carson Palmer another potent weapon in the passing game, brings a veteran leader into the locker room and saved the club from spending a draft pick on a tight end.

Our View: After spending most of his time as a blocker in Indy, Utecht will be able to realize his full potential in Cincinnati. The team waived the troubled Chris Henry during the offseason, and incumbent Reggie Kelly is more of a blocker than receiver, so Utecht has a chance to make an impact in the Bengals’ explosive passing offense.
Bell making impact in St. LouisThursday 6/12, 9:41 AM CT
Free-agent pickup Jacob Bell has been a steady performer at left guard during the St. Louis Rams’ offseason program, and should help strengthen an offensive line that is rebounding from a raft of injures last season, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: This is great news for an offensive line that was decimated by injuries last season. If the offensive line can stay healthy in 2008, the Rams offense could bounce back and regain some explosiveness under new offensive coordinator Al Saunders, who is installing some aggressive new wrinkles.
Little regaining old formThursday 6/12, 9:37 AM CT
Leonard Little, the St. Louis Rams left defensive end, has made a strong recovery from toe surgery and is flashing signs of his old form, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Little, 33, who is getting up there in age and coming off an injury plagued season where he posted only one sack, could be a value selection in IDP drafts this year. Keep in mind, between 2001-06, Little posted 68.5 sacks, with never less than seven sacks during any single season.
Houshmandzadeh reports to mini-campThursday 6/12, 9:27 AM CT
Wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh reported for the Cincinnati Bengals mandatory mini-camp this morning, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Houshmandzadeh is seeking a new contract, and there were some questions as to whether he would show up for this camp. This is a good faith move by Houshmandzadeh, and it could speed up negotiations on a new deal.
Owens frustrated about extra testingThursday 6/12, 8:58 AM CT
Dallas wide receiver Terrell Owens just isn't very happy that what he insists was a simple miscommunication landed him in the NFL's "reasonable cause" testing program after he missed a random test, according to ESPN. "Especially with everything with the steroids and performance-enhancing drugs, for me to be put out there in that light, I think it's just a negative connotation for me," Owens said. "It's all because of a missed call that negative perception is out there."

Our View: Though Owens has never tested dirty during his 12-year career, he’s now subject to being tested up to 24 times a year due to the miscommunication.
Sims meeting with BaltimoreThursday 6/12, 8:50 AM CT
Offensive lineman Barry Sims, a nine-year starter who was released by the Oakland Raiders will work out for the Baltimore Ravens today, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: If signed, Sims would be a candidate to replace the recently retired Jonathan Ogden, though Jared Gaither is the frontrunner for the left tackle role.
Police to question Lynch todayThursday 6/12, 8:44 AM CT
Buffalo Police Officer Allan A. Kasprzak will go to the stadium in Orchard Park this afternoon and try to question three or more Buffalo players about Marshawn Lynch’s alleged hit-and-run accident, according to the Buffalo News.

Our View: Police say they have received no cooperation from Lynch and little cooperation from his teammates in their probe of the accident that injured a 27-year-old Ontario woman who was struck while crossing the street at West Chippewa Street and Delaware Avenue on May 31.
Ocho Cinco reports to mandatory mini-campThursday 6/12, 8:36 AM CT
The Cincinnati Bengals confirmed Thursday morning that Chad Johnson is at Paul Brown Stadium as the team prepares for the first practice of their mandatory minicamp, according to Bengals.com. No word if he plans to practice when the Bengals work this morning and afternoon in a camp that ends with a Saturday morning workout after two more on Friday.

Our View: It will be interesting to see if Johnson participates in practice, but for now he has taken the first step towards playing for Cincinnati in 2008.
Jones expected to attend camp Thursday 6/12, 8:01 AM CT
Levi Jones is expected to attend the Bengals' mandatory minicamps, according to the Bengals.com.

Our View: Jones hasn't been at any of the voluntary practices, but is expected for camp. It remains to be seen if he is still looking for a new deal, and if he is only going to attend to avoid fines. Jones is a vital member of the Bengals' offensive line, as he set a club record for allowing the fewest sacks in a season in 2007.
Lynch update Thursday 6/12, 7:38 AM CT
Marshawn Lynch wouldn't likely serve any jail time if found guilty in the hit-and-run incident involving his car, according to ESPN Insider.

Our View: Lynch would be a first-time offender, and the league could suspend him for a game or two, but he wouldn't lose an entire season, or wouldn't fall under the Player Conduct Code for the incident.
Losman attends but does not practiceThursday 6/12, 7:29 AM CT
J.P. Losman attended the opening day of Bills' minicamp, but he did not practice, according to ESPN Insider.

Our View: Losman lost the starting gig at quarterback to Trent Edwards, and Losman wants to leave Buffalo, especially since he is in the final year of his contract with the team. He is attending camp just to avoid fines. Losman will serve as Edwards' backup if he isn't traded.
Seau expected to re-sign with Pats Thursday 6/12, 7:01 AM CT
Junior Seau is expected to re-sign with the Patriots before the start of training camp, according to ESPN Insider.

Our View: Seau will provide depth to the Patriots' linebacking corps, but is no longer a favorable IDP performer.
