Marshall could face suspensionWednesday 6/25, 3:59 PM CT
ESPN speculates that troubled wide receiver Brandon Marshall will be suspended for at least a game or two if he is convicted at his drunken driving trial, which is set to take place in September.

Our View: Marshall has been arrested three times in the past 12 months, and his off-the-field exploits have garnered far more attention than anything he has done on the field this offseason.
Papa hired to replace GumbelWednesday 6/25, 3:50 PM CT
The NFL Network has decided to hire Bob Papa as its new play-by-play man, replacing Bryant Gumbel, according to Newsday.

Our View: Papa, the New York Giants' radio play-by-play man, received national attention during the team's Super Bowl XLII run. He is a veteran broadcaster who also calls boxing for HBO.
Johnson considering comeback?Wednesday 6/25, 3:41 PM CT
Keyshawn Johnson said he's still "seriously" considering a comeback but that never came up when he spoke to Bill Parcells last month, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View: Pure speculation, but Miami is reportedly looking to upgrade their wide receiver depth chart behind Ted Ginn and Ernest Wilford. Terry Glenn's name has been mentioned in passing as a possibility, and now Johnson could be throwing his name into the mix.
Snee contract detailsWednesday 6/25, 3:33 PM CT
A source with knowledge of the situation tells Pro Football Talk that New York Giants offensive guard Chris Snee’s new extension is for six years, and has a base value of $41.25 million in new money.

Our View: The deal includes $17 million in guaranteed money, with a $13.5 million signing bonus.
Denver impressed with Young’s work ethicWednesday 6/25, 3:06 PM CT
Selvin Young still has a ways to go to establish himself as the No. 1 running back. But the team is pleased with his offseason commitment to getting stronger and his determination to disprove the perception he's an injury-prone, change-of-pace runner, according to the Sporting News.

Our View: From 2003-07, five different players have led the Broncos in rushing, so keep a close eye on this situation heading into training camp. The running back depth chart has been extremely fluid in the past, which means caution is in order when considering any Denver runner for your fantasy team.
Durant running with first-teamWednesday 6/25, 2:51 PM CT
The Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff is high on linebacker Justin Durant, who has spent most of the offseason running with the starters, according to the Sporting News. With the return of middle linebacker Mike Peterson, the club has moved Daryl Smith to the strong side (his natural position) while sliding Durant over to the weak side.

Our View: With Clint Ingram nursing a nagging ankle injury, Durant has taken advantage of his absence, and appears to have the inside track on starting on the weak side. The move to the strong-side negatively impacts Smith's value in IDP leagues, while Durant becomes a sleeper prospect.
Crumpler meshing with YoungWednesday 6/25, 2:20 PM CT
Tight end Alge Crumpler, who knows the importance of a good relationship with a quarterback, thinks he has found something splendid working with Tennessee’s Vince Young, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Crumpler, who has scored 24 times during the past four seasons in Atlanta, is expected to provide Young with a quality red zone target in 2008.
Seahawks sign long snapper SchmittWednesday 6/25, 2:03 PM CT
The Seattle Seahawks have signed long snapper Tyler Schmitt to a four-year contract, according to the Seattle Times.

Our View: What can we say, it’s a slow news day.
Bills, Butler agree to extensionWednesday 6/25, 1:59 PM CT
The Buffalo Bills signed right guard Brad Butler to a contract extension, according to the Sporting News.

Our View: Terms of the extension were not immediately available, but Butler's new deal is expected to provide a significant raise over the $445,000 base salary he was scheduled to make this season.
Watson a versatile performerWednesday 6/25, 1:53 PM CT
Running back Kenny Watson is one of the league's most underrated and under-appreciated backs, but he's revered by his coaches and teammates for his talent, work ethic and versatility, according to the Sporting News. He's not a breakaway threat, but shows good quickness off the ball, is a tough inside runner, and has the speed and burst to get to the perimeter.

Our View: Watson is also a solid kickoff returner and is terrific in kick coverage because of his speed and toughness. He's expected to serve as Rudi Johnson's primary backup, though the oft-injured Chris Perry will push him in training camp.
Hobbs questionable for training campWednesday 6/25, 1:35 PM CT
Cornerback Ellis Hobbs has not yet committed to being ready for training camp because he continues to recover from a pair of offseason surgeries, according to the Sporting News. One repaired a labrum injury in his shoulder and the other was for a sports hernia.

Our View: Hobbs is experienced in the defensive scheme, so he can focus his attention on getting healthy for the 2008 season. He is expected to be the team’s No. 1 cornerback, replacing Asante Samuel who departed via free agency.
Chiefs ink RichardsonWednesday 6/25, 1:25 PM CT
The Kansas City Chiefs signed offensive tackle Barry Richardson to a three-year contract, according to the Sporting News. Terms of the deal were not released.

Our View: The Chiefs selected Richardson with the first of two sixth-round picks in this year's NFL draft. Richardson, a 6-6, 319-pound lineman, played in 49 games at Clemson, including 45 starts in four years. He earned first-team All-ACC honors the last two seasons.
Henry has visit from Repo ManWednesday 6/25, 1:13 PM CT
While former Cincinnati receiver Chris Henry was in court for jury selection in his assault trial, his sport utility vehicle was being repossessed from the courthouse parking lot, according to WLWT News 5. The SUV was hooked to a tow truck, but didn't get towed because the lot's owners ordered the tow truck off the lot.

Our View: Henry told News 5 that it's all a misunderstanding that's being worked out.
Johnson recovering quicklyWednesday 6/25, 1:02 PM CT
In a telephone interview with the NFL Network’s Rich Eisen, wide receiver Chad Johnson stated that he is walking around on one leg four days after surgery, and expects to have a big season in Cincinnati this year.

Our View: This once volatile situation has taken a dramatic turn over the past couple of weeks. Johnson is expected to be ready for training camp, and it appears his stance towards the organization has softened considerably.
Crosby working hard to improveWednesday 6/25, 12:37 PM CT
In an impressive display during last week's mini-camp practices, kicker Mason Crosby drilled several long-range field goals with plenty of distance to spare, according to Packers.com.

Our View: Crosby said his offseason work included running a lot of sprints, as well as hurdle drills and box jumping. He focused not just on strengthening his legs, but also his core, and improving his flexibility. He was the top kicker in fantasy football last year, and it's good to hear he is taking his professional career seriously.
Buffalo inks TE FineWednesday 6/25, 11:22 AM CT
The Buffalo Bills signed fourth-round draft choice Derek Fine to an undisclosed contract, according to the Buffalo News.

Our View: Fine was a three-year starter at Kansas and set the school record for his position with 98 catches for 1,009 yards and 10 touchdowns. He caught 46 passes as a senior.
Jackson working primarily as returnerWednesday 6/25, 10:59 AM CT
Rookie wide receiver Dexter Jackson participated mostly by returning kicks for Tampa Bay during a two-day mini-camp last week, according to Florida Today.

Our View: The 5-9, 182-pound Jackson, timed at 4.27 seconds in the 40-yard dash during the NFL combine, hopes to see playing time this season at wide receiver and kick returner for the Buccaneers. Joey Galloway is reportedly mentoring him, and the team hopes Jackson will eventually replace Galloway as the team’s deep threat down the road.
Browns, Bell negotiating contractWednesday 6/25, 10:48 AM CT
The Cleveland Browns have entered contract negotiations with representatives for Beau Bell, their rookie fourth-round linebacker from Nevada-Las Vegas, according to the Dayton Daily News. Discussions are only in the preliminary stages, but the team's top pick is expected to be signed before training camp opens next month.

Our View: The 6-foot-1, 250-pound Bell is very athletic with good speed and is extremely physical. Bell is a real range-rover, covering a lot of ground while in pursuit, and is a sure tackler. D’Qwell Jackson has one inside linebacker job nailed down, so Bell will compete with Andra Davis and Leon Williams for playing time in the Browns’ 3-4 scheme.
Barnes looking at expanded roleWednesday 6/25, 10:38 AM CT
Pass coverage is the next step for outside linebacker Antwan Barnes, who is expected to become a more integral contributor to a Baltimore Ravens’ defense, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: Barnes will assume a larger role on third-down packages, but the objective is to mold him into an every-down linebacker. He appeared in 14 of the team's 16 games last year, but he didn't begin to have an impact until the latter half of the season, when he totaled 10 tackles and two sacks in the final seven games. Barnes' ability to rush the quarterback off the edges helped persuade the team's management that it didn't have to select a pass rusher in the draft in April.
Lynch expected to plead guiltyWednesday 6/25, 10:31 AM CT
Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch is expected to plead guilty Friday to a traffic violation — which is not a criminal charge — for the hit-and-run accident involving his vehicle, according to the Buffalo News.

Our View: Authorities investigating the May 31 accident have discussed two possible traffic violations: failure to exercise due care to avoid striking a pedestrian or leaving the scene of a property-damage accident. Each of those violations carries a maximum penalty of $250 and 15 days in jail, but first-time offenders are all but assured of avoiding jail on such charges.
Rodgers-Cromartie impressive in OTAsWednesday 6/25, 10:23 AM CT
Although he’s considered far from being ready to assume one of the starting cornerback jobs ahead of either Rod Hood or Eric Green, the consensus among Arizona team insiders is that first-round draft pick Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie looked impressive in the team’s organized team activities, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: Rodgers-Cromartie is quick on his feet and reportedly has learned the scheme quickly. His development will be accelerated facing Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin everyday in training camp.
Hill is earning reps under MartzWednesday 6/25, 10:19 AM CT
The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that Jason Hill has been working at split end in Mike Martz's offense.

Our View: Hill caught only one pass as a rookie but has earned a lot of reps during OTAs. Any wide receiver in Mike Martz's offense is worth keeping an eye on.
Kaesviharn frontrunner for starting gigWednesday 6/25, 10:16 AM CT
With free safety Josh Bullocks out for organized team activities while on the mend from knee surgery, Kevin Kaesviharn has moved ahead in the race to become the team’s starting free safety, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: Kaesviharn started three games last season, his first with New Orleans, but team insiders say he looks like the more dependable option at this point and is penciled in as the starter next to SS Roman Harper. Bullocks is the incumbent at the position and has started 43 of the 46 games he has played in during his three seasons in the league, but his performance has been inconsistent, particularly in coverage.
Strahan comments on ShockeyWednesday 6/25, 10:10 AM CT
Thirty minutes into his new television gig with Fox, Michael Strahan told Newsday he thinks the New York Giants should dump unhappy tight end Jeremy Shockey. "He doesn't want to play here; that's obvious with everything that's going on," Strahan said, "I don't think you gain much by keeping a guy around. Regardless of how well he plays for you, there's always that tension, and that's one thing you can't have if you're expected to go back and repeat."

Our View: Those are the types of sound bites that Fox will be looking for from Strahan, who signed a four-year deal believed to be worth about $2.3 million a year after fielding offers from other networks.
Jackson likely to face heavy blitzingWednesday 6/25, 10:02 AM CT
The Minnesota Vikings are likely to see a lot of blitzing until quarterback Tarvaris Jackson proves he can make sound decisions in the face of pressure, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: It’s difficult to grade offseason practices for such a specific element, but team insiders say Jackson has proven to be more calm in the face of pressure in terms of decision making, getting rid of the ball more cleanly and effectively and standing in the pocket amid a heavy rush. The Vikings are expected to make the playoffs in 2008, so the pressure will be on Jackson to step up his game this year.
Jansen rehab updateWednesday 6/25, 9:48 AM CT
Right tackle Jon Jansen is expected to rejoin the starting lineup following a painful double injury that he incurred in the season opener last season against Miami, according to Pro Football Weekly. Jansen reportedly is in good shape following rehab of his broken right leg and dislocated right ankle.

Our View: Jansen still has a ways to go before he’s completely healthy, but his return will be welcome considering the team was decimated on the right side of the offensive line last year. Jansen and right guard Randy Thomas missed a combined 28 starts last season due to injuries.
Steinbach is the NFL's best guardWednesday 6/25, 9:31 AM CT
Newerascouting ranks Eric Steinbach as the NFL's best guard.

Our View: This would help explain the resurgence of the Cleveland Browns offense. Keep in mind, if he goes down, the rest of the skill-players could see their production dip, as well.
Teams inquiring about ShockeyWednesday 6/25, 9:31 AM CT
There are quiet rumors circulating that teams are still asking about tight end Jeremy Shockey's availability, and although Pro Football Weekly hears the team would like to get its star tight end healthy and into camp, the rift between player and team isn’t narrowing.

Our View: Shockey is upset with what he perceives to be a lack of respect from the New York Giants in the form of misinformation about his situation. And there are some insiders who believe the rift has gone past the point where he can be of benefit from the team. That said, it’s likely that nothing will happen in terms of a trade before the Giants report to training camp.
Nalen should be ready for campWednesday 6/25, 9:19 AM CT
Despite undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery earlier this month to repair torn cartilage in his left knee, Denver center Tom Nalen should be ready for the start of training camp July 25, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: Nalen, entering his 15th NFL season, suffered a torn biceps in the fifth game of last season, ending his year prematurely. The injury setbacks are beginning to pile up for Nalen but team sources say he’s as tough as they come and should be able to rebound fairly quickly.
Freeney rehab ahead of scheduleWednesday 6/25, 9:13 AM CT
Per team insiders, defensive end Dwight Freeney is well on his way to be back in playing condition by the start of the regular season, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: Freeney has been nursing a Lisfranc (foot) injury throughout the offseason program, but team doctors have told him that he’s ahead of schedule with his return.
Dizon unlikely to face suspensionWednesday 6/25, 8:49 AM CT
Rookie linebacker Jordon Dizon was arrested before the NFL draft on suspicion of drunk driving, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and failure to provide insurance. But it's unlikely that Dizon would warrant a suspension from the NFL based on a violation of the personal-conduct code since the arrest occurred before being drafted, according to the Detroit Free-Press.

Our View: Citing a police report, the newspaper said Dizon's blood-alcohol level was .097, above the legal limit of .08. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is scheduled to appear in Boulder County Court on Aug. 18 and has a trial set for Oct. 21. Dizon is expected to compete with incumbent Paris Lenon for the starting middle linebacker job during training camp.
Pacman making a good impressionWednesday 6/25, 8:40 AM CT
It's been three weeks since cornerback Pacman Jones received the green light from the NFL to work out with the Dallas Cowboys. In that span, he's made it clear to his new team he doesn't take any plays off, according to the San Antonio Express-News. “I thought he was a competitor, but he is an extraordinary competitor,” coach Wade Phillips said. “He really likes to mix it up out there and be a make-every-play kind of guy.”

Our View: While skepticism abounds about whether Jones can avoid the behavior that led commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend him in April 2007, Jones has been quick to prove the layoff hasn't robbed him of his drive to be one of the league's top players. He's already logged some time with the first-team defense, sparking speculation he could supplant Anthony Henry at right cornerback.
Haynesworth optimistic about new contractWednesday 6/25, 8:27 AM CT
Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth remains optimistic that he and the Tennessee Titans will iron out a deal allowing him to join his teammates for the start of training camp on July 25. But he does not appear likely to sign his $7.25 million franchise tender any time soon, according to ESPN.

Our View: The sides have until July 15 to reach a long-term deal, otherwise they cannot negotiate until the end of the regular season. Haynesworth's agent, Chad Speck, has said he's proposed the Titans allow for some incentives in the one-year deal that could give his client an avenue by which he would not be tagged again in 2009, and the organization has been somewhat receptive to the idea.
McKinnie in limboWednesday 6/25, 8:21 AM CT
Offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie isn’t likely to get closure on his latest legal problems before the Vikings report to training camp on July 23 and his status with the NFL also remains in limbo, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. McKinnie had his criminal case continued again Friday during a hearing in Miami-Dade County Court and now is scheduled for a Sept. 24 court date at which he does not have to be present.

Our View: McKinnie is a repeat offender of the league’s personal-conduct policy, meaning the NFL could suspend him before the legal system plays itself out. If McKinnie does find himself suspended, look for Artis Hicks to replace him at left tackle.
Another arrest for MarshallWednesday 6/25, 8:06 AM CT
Wide receiver Brandon Marshall was arrested March 6 in Atlanta on a misdemeanor battery charge, his third arrest in 12 months and second involving a domestic dispute, according to the Denver Post. Marshall, who was in Atlanta training with Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler and tight end Tony Scheffler at the time, was booked into the Fulton County Jail on March 6. He was released on March 7 after appearing before a judge and posting a $1,000 cash bond.

Our View: Marshall could be suspended by the NFL under its Personal Conduct Policy because of multiple arrests and alleged incidents. He also was charged with driving under the influence in October 2007 and is set to go to trial in September on that charge. A previous domestic-violence charge, from an arrest in March 2007, has been dismissed.
