Stewart inks six-year extension Friday 6/27, 11:30 PM CT
David Stewart has inked a six-year extension with the Titans worth $38.9 million, according to MusicCityMiracles.com.

Our View: Stewart is a strong and physical right tackle and combines with Michael Roos to give the Titans one of the best tandems in the NFL at the position.
Henry gets one charge dropped Friday 6/27, 8:41 PM CT
Chris Henry had one of the two charges against him dismissed on Friday, according to ESPN.com. The former member of the Bengals had been accused of punching a man in the face and breaking his car window with a beer bottle, and had been charged with assault and criminal damaging. Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Richard Bernat dropped the criminal damaging charge today. Henry testified that he swung at his accuser in self-defense.

Our View: Henry is on indefinite suspension from the NFL pending the outcome of this trial, which is expected to continue early next week when the jury is expected to begin deliberating the remaining assault charge.
Washihgton's contract details are inFriday 6/27, 5:31 PM CT
Chauncey Washington's contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars calls for him to make salaries of $295,000 this season, then raises to $360,000 in 2009, $440,000 in 2010 and $550,000 in 2011, according to ESPN.com. He received a signing bonus of $60,000.

Our View: Washington will be no better than the third back on the depth chart, barring injuries to Fred Taylor or Maurice Jones-Drew.
Edwards fully recoveredFriday 6/27, 5:00 PM CT
Ray Edwards has recovered from a lower back injury he suffered during a previous minicamp, reports the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "He looks like a million bucks,” the paper quoted Vikings head coach Brad Childress as saying.

Our View: The 23-year-old defensive end put together a nice season in 2007, playing in 12 games and registering five sacks while forcing four fumbles. He could play a much bigger role this season with Kenechi Udeze battling leukemia and Erasmus James now a Redskin.
Davenport releasedFriday 6/27, 4:17 PM CT
Najeh Davenport was released from the Pittsburgh Steelers today, according to Profootballtalk.com. It was reported earlier in the day that Pittsburgh was trying to trade the 29-year-old back.

Our View: Running backs are always needed around the league, so Davenport is likely to find work somewhere, and his value in fantasy football will be easier to gauge at that time.
Spicer gets extendedFriday 6/27, 3:02 PM CT
Paul Spicer got a two-year, $8 million extension by the Jacksonville Jaguars, reports NFL.com. He will be 33-years old in August.

Our View: Spicer had 7.5 sacks last year, and 18 in the last three years. Jacksonville drafted defensive ends Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves in the first two rounds, and they will undoubtedly see some playing time.
Record deal for Jackson?Friday 6/27, 2:55 PM CT
Steven Jackson may end up getting a record deal for the running back position, reports Pro Football Weekly. The 24-year-old back is on his third agent in five years, and would like a new contract sooner rather than later.

Our View: Jackson is arguably one of the three to five best running backs in all of football. He has obvious power and surprising speed, as evidenced by his three runs of 50 yards or more. He should be a hot commodity in fantasy football as he works with new Rams offensive coordinator Al Suanders, who has gotten big years in the past out of players like Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson and Clinton Portis.
Moats may be out in PhillyFriday 6/27, 2:46 PM CT
Ryan Moats may not be long for Philadelphia's roster, reports Pro Football Weekly. The former third round draft pick is currently fifth on the team's depth chart.

Our View: Moats has played all of 15 games in his three seasons in the NFL. He had a nice rookie season, averaging 5.1 yards per carry while scoring three touchdowns, but he struggled in 2006, and did not play last season due to a broken ankle.
Rice the next MJD?Friday 6/27, 2:36 PM CT
The Baltimore Ravens have been pleased with the work of running back Ray Rice, and will try to use him in the same way Jacksonville uses Maurice Jones-Drew, reports Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: If Rice can accomplish even half of what Jones-Drew did his rookie season, he'll be a valuable contributor to fantasy football teams, even with the presence of Willis McGahee.
Brady not participating in offseason workoutsFriday 6/27, 2:29 PM CT
Tom Brady has not been participating in many offseason workouts, according to Pro Football Weekly. The web site reports that he simply wanted a break after the long season, and he has been partaking in activities with girlfriend Gisele Bundchen in Europe and other locales.

Our View: Of all people, Brady can probably be excused for missing a few workouts. Especially to cavort around the world with a Victoria's Secret model. His absences aren't significant to the upcoming fantasy season, as he remains the top QB on the board.
Gholston will be eased into playing timeFriday 6/27, 2:23 PM CT
Vernon Gholston is probably not going to start, as the New York Jets plan to transition him slowly onto the field, according to Pro Football Weekly. The web site reports he will be used initially only in pass rushing situations.

Our View: Even if he only plays on passing downs, Gholston can still make some noise. He likely won't pile up the tackles, but his most important job is to get to the quarterback anyway. Double digit sacks are probably an unrealistic goal, but he will still register his share.
Steelers looking to deal DavenportFriday 6/27, 2:16 PM CT
The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to trade Najeh Davenport, reports profootballtalk.com. He ran for 499 yards and five touchdowns in 2007.

Our View: The 29-year-old Davenport will likely have some trade value, and he remains a solid player in a backup role. His fantasy value will depend on which team he winds up with.
Lynch pleads guilty, apologizesFriday 6/27, 2:13 PM CT
Marshawn Lynch plead guilty to failure to exercise due care and apologized to the victim of his recent hit-and-run accident, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: Roger Goodell will may have something to say about this, and that is worth looking out for in the upcoming fantasy football season. It probably won't be enough to warrant a long suspension, but it does raise the value of backup running back Fred Jackson a bit.
Jones' roster spot appears safeFriday 6/27, 1:41 PM CT
Brandon Jones seems to be safe from any team discipline, e.g. release, stemming from his arrest for a possession of a handgun at the Nashville International Airport earlier in the month, this according to Rototimes sources.

Our View: While some believe he is the most talented receiver, physically, he's not shown the ability to stay healthy. Currently, Justin Gage and Justin McCareins are the favorites to start in the new spread offense.
Wyche thinks Losman should be movedFriday 6/27, 11:51 AM CT
Former Cincinnati Bengals head coach and Bills quarterbacks coach Sam Wyche thinks J.P. Losman is too talented to sit, and should be moved to a team willing to play him, according to buffalobills.com. "Those teams are out there and the best thing that his agent can do for him is try to find that team and get him there,” Wyche said.

Our View: Losman's talent has never been questioned, but he has not shown the ability to put it all together quite yet. He had a pretty good 2006 season, completing over 62% of his passes and throwing 19 touchdowns to 14 interceptions. With the shoddy quarterback situations around the league, you would think some team would be interested in giving him a chance to compete for a starting spot.
Carpenter needs to make impressionFriday 6/27, 11:33 AM CT
Bobby Carpenter is getting a shot to backup Zach Thomas as the Cowboys, but this may be his last chance to make an impact in Dallas, reports the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: It's hard to fathom that the former first round pick could fall from grace so quickly, but that appears to be the case. Carpenter has not been productive in his two seasons with the team, amassing just 37 total tackles in 29 games.
Barnes favorite to start at fullbackFriday 6/27, 11:29 AM CT
Darian Barnes has emerged as the favorite to start at fullback, according to buffalobills.com. "He is a physical, more of a straight-line, thumper fullback which is more in line with what we're looking for," said Bills running backs coach Eric Studesville.

Our View: Barnes' value will be as a lead blocker for Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson. The report states that he has the ability to catch the ball, but purely as a dump-off option, so he should not be considered a useful fantasy prospect.
Jackson works with startersFriday 6/27, 11:22 AM CT
Wide receiver Chad Jackson did not catch a single pass last season, and in fact only played in two games. However, he has worked extensively with the starting unit in spring practices, reports ESPN.com.

Our View: Though he may have just taken over as Wes Welker rested, it still bodes well for the 23-year-old former Florida Gator. Jackson did score three touchdowns among his 13 receptions his rookie season, and he figures to get more playing time because of the departure of Donte Stallworth. Consider him a fantasy sleeper.
Jones showing signs of lifeFriday 6/27, 11:16 AM CT
Thomas Jones has been "reinvigorated" by the Jets additions to the offensive line, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: Fantasy owners surely hope so. Jones disappointed many by rushing for just one touchdown last season. He averaged only 3.6 yards per carry, but that figures to go up as he gets to run behind new guard Alan Faneca.
McCown early favorite at QBFriday 6/27, 11:08 AM CT
Josh McCown has emerged as the very early favorite to start at quarterback for Miami, according to ESPN.com. He is competing with John Beck and rookie Chad Henne at the position.

Our View: Considering how terrible Beck was, and the fact that Chad Henne is a rookie (and we all know how rookie quarterbacks usually fare), it would not be a surprise to see McCown win the job. But he would not be a viable fantasy option, based both on the Dolphins offensive personnel and McCown's previous play.
Bennett struggling earlyFriday 6/27, 11:03 AM CT
Martellus Bennett is having a difficult time early in his transition to the NFL, according to Dallas Morning News reporter Jean Jacques-Taylor.

Our View: Bennett has a lot of talent, and it would greatly help the Cowboys if he could become a key piece of certain packages, allowing Jason Witten to play even more of a receiver role considering Dallas' depth problems at that position.
Brady best player in NFL, says PriscoFriday 6/27, 10:15 AM CT
Tom Brady has been named the best player in the NFL, according to Sportsline.com writer Pete Prisco, in his annual list of the top 50 players in the league.

Our View: This is no real surprise for the guy who threw 50 touchdown passes last season. He is easily the top quarterback for the upcoming fantasy football season.
Warner contract talks moving slowlyFriday 6/27, 10:05 AM CT
Kurt Warner is looking for a new contract, but talks have not progressed quickly, according to the East Valley Tribune. Warner is looking to sign for two more seasons.

Our View: Warner is going to be the backup to Matt Leinart heading into training camp, but he was effective in 2007, throwing for 27 touchdowns. He is just one Leinart injury away from being the Cardinals starter.
Scheffler says injured foot OKFriday 6/27, 8:41 AM CT
The Denver Post is reporting that Broncos' tight end Tony Scheffler was walking around in flip-flops Thursday during an promotional appearance and said his foot was nearly healed. "It feels pretty good," Scheffler said. "It's back to normal, and I am doing everything with the rest of the team, looking forward to getting this behind me."

Our View: It was a good sign for the Broncos tight end, who was wearing a protective boot last month. Scheffler, who reinjured his left foot May 19, said he is fully recovered and is ready to hit the field for training camp on July 25.
Lawyer calls Marshall a liarFriday 6/27, 8:29 AM CT
ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that the attorney of Brandon Marshall's ex-girlfriend says the Broncos wide receiver is lying when he claims that his March arrest was part of a “shakedown” attempt. “His story that he has been a victim is as pathetic as the story that he slipped on a McDonald’s bag and injured his arm,” said David McGill, a lawyer for Marshall’s ex-girlfriend Rasheedah Watley. “Hopefully, he will be as eager to tell his story in a court of law, under oath, as he has been in the media.”

Our View: Marshall was arrested on March 6 because, an Atlanta Police Department report says, Watley told police Marshall “threw her on the bed, grasped her head with his hand and began to slap her.” Marshall says the only physical altercation was when Watley’s sisters attacked him. Is it just us, or is there more off-field NFL player news this summer than in past summers?
